This looks absolutely amazing!! Well done William! I'm currently experimenting with Reality Capture myself, so that coupon was very welcome! Thank you 🙂
So basically, 3D scanning an environment, you used a similar method that Developers "Big Fish" 3D Scanning of Chernobyl for their game Chernobylite - Which runs on Unreal Engine 4 - Making the real scanned maps of the game feel like a AA+ title.. However, this church in Unreal Engine 5 looks phenomenally better, you'd think it's a Pre-Rendered cutscene, but it's all Real-Time!
Besides this being the coolest shit ever, Faucher has an insane talent for making sure every sentence said in a breakdown is helpful in some way. No dead air, no useless rambling.
William - cannot tell you how much I look forward to your tutorials. You are the perfect teacher - you’ve got the chops and you know how convey your knowledge in a friendly, straightforward manner that keeps viewers engaged while learning. Thank you.
computer rendering is improving day by day, these amazing artists are creating what seemed like dream few years ago. Imagine how this will take shape in no longer than 10 years! Absolutely stunning.
Not even 10 years. Right now, games are capable of this, but only the highest end gaming PC is capable of doing it this outstandingly well. Currently EPIC is using Fortnite to showcase these features, and the results (even for a more cartoon art style) are jaw-dropping on the latest consoles. I played the other day and was just marveling at the fine details you don't notice unless you stop and look. I stopped in a "cheese and meats shop," and the cut wheels of cheese up close were slightly low resolution, but still good enough to show every little crater and crack. The ray tracing used for reflections and shadows in the game were running in software, and they also do a great job mimicking what the brute force of hardware based solutions can do. Honestly console hardware just needs to catch up at this point as these techniques for more realistic art direction is fairly demanding
10 months ago I was so inspired by your Lofoten scene, that I made my own project with autumn overcast setting and an old house with wood carving. What a coincidence - stoked to see your take on a similar subject and setting. Amazing job and the best presentation as always! Keep inspiring us, William.
Looks like 100 man years of work but of course it's perfectly doable by everyone... Love it. Absolutely taken care of all details and a bunch of decade old techniques, simple but super effective.

just wanna say this dude Thank you for this video i was really dangling around regarding my work and this gave me a good spark just loved this video and yeah gonna try Reality Capture for my next project
ngl seeing this alone, can already tell how much time and effort were given alone in scanning; also im seeing this as a new gen to document and preserve.
This is beautiful! I'm impressed you didn't get much distortion in the scan around the top of the church despite not having the greatest coverage. Also your scene reminds me of the church in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Amazing work mate!
The church in Ethan Carter is based on the Vang Stave Church in southern Poland, which is actually a Norwegian church transferred to Poland in 1842. The game contains other regional references, the dam, hydro-power plant and the railway bridge are based on their counterparts in Pilchowice. Not sure how accurate but I remember hearing that the game was one of the pioneers in photo scanning real environments.
God bless this man. Finding good pictures of the Urnes knot work carvings on the side of the building (which should be easy, because literally, the global conception of what Viking carvings look like is called “Urnes style” named specifically after those very carvings on the side of that church) is almost impossible. Now we can see them clearly altogether! Incredible. Thank you, sir!!! 🙌
I am in awe of the results and your humility. I’ve been wanting to get into 3D work for so many years. You’ve actually made me feel like I can do it. My journey begins tomorrow. Thank you 🙏
Amazing, William would you be able to do a tutorial, in which you could explain method for managing multiple stills Shots with different camera and different settings? To do things efficiently?
I immediately recognised the church. I went on a road trip in 2020 with my girlfriend. We crossed Urnes by accident and went to visit the stave church because why not. It was such a special place for us. The boat to the little town, the walk up to the church. Really cool you made it with this much detail
This is amazing! I am curios if you consider to obtain the 3D model of the interior as well and then have it prepared to a VR environment allowing users to navigate and explore this wonderful church. I have worked on something similar with a wooden Church from Transylvania, but the quality that you obtained is just incredible.
@@WilliamFaucher Would be nice to see how a Stave Church looks on the interior. I agree that it would be a huge struggle to capture the interior. I am also curios how you photogrammetry the windows and if you post processed the resulting mesh of the windows, I see that the Church has a limited amount of windows and they are not zoomed in within the video.
Hot DAMN, sometimes I forgot I was even looking at a render and not real life. Truly, UE5 is a blessing of a tool, and when such capable hands pick it up, what can only be described as magic is created. Truly, amazing job!
All i can say is WOW... GREAT WORK. Future games are so exciting. We wont be watching movies, we will be characters in them. Things like Jurassic Park will be a literal place you can visit and explore in the virtual world. I thought this as i saw this and when you pair this tech with VR and Multiplayer..
