    I think sometimes players can try too hard to avoid not starting on wheat... For instance blue placing 4th... Instead of sacrificing a lot of production by taking the 8-10-3 and 6-3, and fighting what would seem to be a losing largest army battle with white based on white's superior first settlement, maybe go 8-4-10 and 6-5-12 and point your road towards the 4-11 wheat on the 3-1 port... You don't start with wheat, but you have everything else, and great production, and need just 2 roads to get to the 4-11, which will give you both wheat and the valuable port for all your production... It wouldn't take too long with your road production, and you just need to trade for 1 wheat with a player or the bank to get that first expansion settlement, and then you'll have wheat and a strong port and won't need to rely on anyone else... Maybe there's a small chance someone starts on the 4-11 like you suggested, but that wouldn't be the best play for them, and even if they did, that would almost for sure leave the 8-3 3-1 port open, and you could point your 8-4-10 road down to that just as insurance... One of the 4-11 or 8-3 will be open, and while the 4-11 is preferable, I still think you could play a strong road game even with no wheat, with all 4 other resources, a lot of production, and a 3-1 port... The 6-5-12 also blocks off the upper part of the island, and should give you a good road network, which red in this game actually ended up using to take longest road... Based on the first 3 settlements, longest road just seems more uncontested than largest army, and since the highest producing spots point you that way, it seems wrong to give up production just to take the wheat and go for army... Just my opinion... I know ore-wheat-sheep is the strongest overall setup in Catan, but I don't think you should go out of your way to secure it when someone else already seems to be completely going for it and has a better first settlement placement... Good game though and good win... Enjoy the content...

    26:30 I think you should mono sheep here tbh. You need to steal 12 sheep to win with this hand (settle, double city and take road). I think you probably fall just short of that but u should still be able to settle and double city I think. And if white has one or two sheep in their hand it's very nice to steal them. I guess there is an argument to hold the mono for a better position on white but there's a decent risk white wins on their next turn so I think u just have to mono now. And also white goes immediately before you so you're never going to get a great mono position on them anyway cos they use all their cards before your turn.

      Yeah, that was the one spot where it made sense to use the mono other than at the end FTW.
      The fact that White had position on me is definitely noteworthy, but there are a few situations where I could target them if I (for example) roll a specific number and they have something of value left in their hand (like Ore or Wheat).
      Either way, my mono play wasn't optimal but that wasn't the biggest mistake I made this game.
      😅

      Yup, that was the blunder I mention in the title.
      🤦‍♂️

    Yay new upload. I would take the offer from white at the beginning. The 8/10 is a great spot for you and they are gonna be trading you sheep or wheat for your bricks which will help you get there. Sheep port is good for white for sure but getting a 3:1 port is very valuable for you too. And blue will be buying devs to compete with white so you can help them out with that if white gets too scary

      My thinking was that White was going to take the 5/6/11 if I agree to this deal, so they'd have a ton of Sheep production and the port which is way too strong. The port, as I discuss a few times during the game, wasn't extremely important for me to begin with since my production was well balanced.
      So forcing White to go take a port and leaving the entire centre open for me (giving me a good shot at Longest Road) is probably a better situation for me than having the 8/10 as an expansion.
      😉

      @@TryNiceGames Yeah I can see arguments for both plays. The problem with not having a 3:1 port is you are way more likely to 7 out, especially if your wheat or ore is blocked. Maybe you could try to get two non-blocks from white as part of the trade to make it a bit better. Interesting situation for sure

    Ouch, but lucky none of your opponents had the win. I've done that, too: so focused on one thing that I miss the big picture. Except I don't have a bunch of viewers screaming at me that I screwed up. What really won the game for you was your income. You just destroyed them even though you were blocked most of the game. Good initial picks, and that early settlement letting you get sheep made you almost totally self-sufficient. I think you had 1 trade the whole game.

  • @olemartinfure9298
    @olemartinfure9298 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1) Why not 8/10/4 2nd pick and point right to 5/4/11. Massive production for 5/4/11 2nd settlement spot and more balanced road production since you are on 6 wood
    2) I think blues offer before 8th pick was pretty good. Why not try to discuss a bit more, and potentially make some deal? 10 ore + 5/11/8 sheep 2:1 port with no wheat isnt that strong tbh, and it strenghtens your position.
    3) 26:25 I see a potential win this turn. Why not trade to trade some sheep away and for a dirty mono? You need two wood + three wheat to win with settle + road + 2x city. If you manage to get a trade for the wood you have 3:1 port for porting the remaining 4 cards you need.
    4) 37:20 Settle 4/11 and build three roads and you win? You had the hand to do it, even without using the mono!

    • @DinoZoffEx
      @DinoZoffEx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taking the 8-10-4 as second pick means that you would rely on 6 as your only source of wood, which is super blockable. An early block on 6 would clog your hand with tons of non-tradeable brick, and it would make you fall too far behind.

    • @olemartinfure9298
      @olemartinfure9298 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DinoZoffEx we're talking about 3 wood here... not exactly a number that can unclog any hand

    • @TryNiceGames

      I talked a little bit about the benefits of having a road in our hand to start the game, but the point Dino is making is probably clearer when you think about it from a production points perspective. If I take the 4/8/10 I end up with 8 points of Brick & 5 of Lumber (with 3 numbers for Bricks and 1 for Lumber) vs. the 7pts & 5pts + having 2 numbers for each resource and coordinated 3s, which actually proved to be quite beneficial during this game.
      I also know that I'm expanding to the 8/4, so Sheep isn't going to be a long-term problem, and I'm also likely to get another 3 Hex Spot in the centre of the board regardless.
      That's my thinking about this...
