- How to use paddle shifters in a Toyota Camry is often a question many owners ask. Paddle shifters in a Toyota Camry can be used to bring some fun factor back into Toyota Camry.
I will be using a 2021 Toyota Camry for this easy paddle shifters tutorial. In the paddle shifters tutorial for the Toyota Camry, we will learn how to upshift and downshift using paddle shifters in your Toyota Camry.
Although Toyota Camry isn't a sports sedan, I am glad Toyota decided to offer the paddle shifters in the Camry as it makes this sedan a bit more engaging and fun to drive.

I have a 22 Corolla Hatchback and I’m afraid to use the paddle shifters because I don’t want to mess it up lol. I just got the car. This video gave me a little confidence to try it.
Haha don’t sweat it! It’s very easy to do and really fun! Most cars especially Toyota have enough safety measures in place that you really can’t mess it up
@@Red5oh I have a 2011 Toyota Camry Le it has the sequesntial shifting I have driven a manual before but I haven’t really done sequential shifting. I’m just wondering Will the car downshift it’s self like the newer cars or do I have to downshift? If u get what I mean
@@dragonhunter2264 i’m quite sure it does it for you
Same
amazing explanation way better than the other manual mode driving videos
Thank you! I really tried to break it down so it’s easier for someone new to pick it up
Thank you for this video. I pick up my XSE Camry Hybrid next week and found this very helpful!
Congrats on your new car! Paddle shifters will really make the car fun to drive
Very helpful. Glad to know the engine has a self-protective measure if you get too aggressive on the downshift.
Yeah your engine is protected so you can have fun without worrying about
Yes this is a great explanation on the paddle shifters. I didn’t know I could use them in “D”. So thank you for this ❤
You’re welcome! It really makes the car fun to drive
@@Red5ohwould you know the difference between using the paddle shifters on “D” vs “S”?
Thanks for this great video!
You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful!
Thank you! Super helpful. Please don't hold your phone and record though, get a body cam if you make another one of these. Just stay careful for yourself and everyone else around you
You’re welcome I’m happy the video was helpful! I have since gotten a GoPro with a head mount so I can driving videos safely
Thank you. Finally a nice explanation. I have my new 24 Camry and I wasn't sure how to use the shift paddles.
Thank you. Greetings from PR
I’m glad the video was helpful for you! Paddle shifters can really make your Camry fun to drive
Thanks bro just picked up my spider camry and found this really helpful
Thanks man.
Glad it was helpful! Camry can be really fun with paddle shifters
I just got a 2019 Corolla hatchback and I love it, Im gonna test this out and see if I can do it, Thanks for the instructional!
You're welcome! It will really make the corolla fun to drive
personally I just listen to the car but it’s really cool to learn about the correct RPMs for my car
Yeah that’s how I typically shift too by listening to the car. It’s good for beginners to know the rpm but once you get a hang of it it’s easy to just do it by hearing the engine
Coming from driving an actual manual car growing up, I have one question that no video I've watched seems to answer. If you are already moving, say at 40 or 50 MPH, is it OK to move the gear shifter handle from D to S? Or should you only move it to S when you are not actually moving yet?
Yes it’s completely safe to do so. I own a 2019 mustang gt and use paddles all the time. I easily go between S and D while driving. In the Camry it’s fine too
Good job bro
Thanks hope it was helpful
Dang, people really go 100+ where yall at? In tennessee if you go 80 in a 70 you bet you're gonna see blue lights coming out of a bush somewhere. They really want the money.
Lol it’s kmh not mph. So I was going about 60 mph really
texas 😏

Great video bro, thanks.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful
is it bad for the transmission to drive it this way?
Not at all!
I think i understand most of it but i have a question. if im in 6 or 7th gear going high speed and slowing down to a stop, would i just downshift all the way to 1? Or if i apply breaks it will autoshift down?
And if im in 4th or 5th and come to a stop while in 4th or 5th gear and fully stopped. Do I stay in that gear or downshift to 1 while stopped or will it auto downshift regardless when im applying brakes and stopped
For coming to a stop you can do either. You can manually downshift to first or let it auto downshift for you as you come to a stop, both are fine but doing it manually downshifting is more fun lol.
Same thing when you come to a stop it will have autofownshifted to 1st gear. You’ll always start in first gear from stop
Let say I am on sport mode, I shift few gears while driving. But then if I decides to no shift, does the car shift for me (still on sport mode)? Or does it just stuck on the gear I last shifted? Basically asking if the car overides it
The car will override it once it detects you’re not actively using the paddle shifters
Didn’t see him mention putting the gear shifter in the S or sport mode first
That would allow you to hold the gear instead of just using the paddles in D mode
I didn't realize the paddles extended out of sight, i totally thought you had to extend your fingers through the steering wheel and push the plus and minus parts away from you.
I was like wtf is this dumb shit!
Haha no that would be a bad design choice. The paddle shifters are really easy to use
How do I put it back to normal ??
It reverts back automatically or you can hold paddle shifters to cancel
Why does my 2017 toyota camery le only show S _+ on the gear shifter consol and yet no paddles are on the steering wheel?
Only SE Camry have paddle shifters. With your LE you can apply the same concept as this video and use the shifter +/-
So pretty much you upshift so you can slow down and stop ? And downshift when you wanna speed up ?
It’s the opposite actually. With downshift you can accelerate quicker yes but you’d have to go into higher gear to go faster
My Camry is a rental, which I’ll have for about 5 weeks. I normally drive a manual, a VW Golf Turbo Diesel. With these paddle shifters I assume I should choose gears based on which gear I would be in if it were a manual?
Yup since you know manual already that is what I would use as guideline in terms what gear you should be in
Do you press the gas while pressing up shift or down shift or you take your foot off the gas when pressing one of them??
You can leave your foot on the gas and it will still shift just fine for you. For downshifting letting go of gas pedal could result in slightly smoother shift but nothing significant
Hello, i hit my paddle shifter by mistake. How do i get it back to normal. Thanks.
It goes back by itself if your shifter is in D. Also once you turn off the car it will be back to normal
I accidentally pressed the gears on my Camry when I didn’t want to mess with them, it’s my daily driver what number do you recommend ?
It reverts back to auto shifting if you accidentally press the paddles. You can shift below 3k rpm as you are learning right now
I have one of these and cannot understand why Toyota put paddles on the car when the auto system does it so much better 😤
Lol some people want to feel they have a sporty car. I’m sure 99% of Camry owners don’t even use the paddles
@@Red5oh That’s probably true, I could think of other thanks they could have incorporated into the car instead of paddles 😤
Plus it can help in slick or icy situations- where the automatic transmission does just fine- but the manual control can help with more or less power as needed especially if you get stuck. I got the awd nightshade with the paddles for that reason since we get more ice than snow where I live
Question, when downshifting as you are coming to a stop, are you still applying gas and downshifting (not to go faster) or are you applying the breaks and downshifting as the RPMS drop
You would apply the brake or don’t press any paddle when downshifting. You could be pressing the gas it won’t harm anything but be a little rough and jerky
If you’re not using the pad shifters but accidentally hit it while driving, Does it go back to normal on its own or do you have to move it back up/down?
Yes it does revert back to automatic shifting after few seconds when it detects you are not using shifters.
Do you let go of the gas paddle when you downshift , man this kinda scary I dont want mess up my transmission
Nope you don’t have to let go of the gas paddle when you downshift. It just makes it smoother if you do but not required
Do you need to put the stick shift in a certain position to use the paddle shifters?
No you don’t have to. It works in normal mode too
Thanks
You’re welcome! Hopefully it was helpful
If i am in D mode and i accidentally shift the paddles will it automaticall adjust where it needs to go? I messed with mine on accident and i dont know what # i should be on
Yes it will automatically revert back to where it needs to be
can i stay on one gear the whole time? for example if i wanted to shift to 8, will it stay there automatically if i dont shift it at all or will the car shift itself? thanks!
It will but as you are slowing down it will automatically drop gears for you as it's not good for the car to be in 8th gear going very slow since you will be lugging the engine
What happens if I'm driving in D mode not using S mode, but suddenly I upshift or downshift? I'm afraid it will hurt my car😭
It won't hurt your car at all. You should be able to shift whenever whether you are in D or S mode
@@Red5oh ohh thank youuu!!
Hey, Red5oh, I just noticed when I switch from Auto to manu shift, no matter speed I had, the initial manu shift always be either D4 or D5. Have you notice that? and what your say about it.
It will revert back to whatever gear the computer thinks it's good for that speed. When I drove it I didnt notice any issue with mine.
@@Red5oh Thanks your feedback, For my case, no matter speed at 80 or 30 km/h, the shift seems always in M4.
Do i let go of the gas pedal when shifting? Just got one of these and never had a car like this before.
You can let go of gas paddle for a smoother shift when downshifting. For upshifting it does not matter
but can u only upshift in sport
No you can downshift as well
Whats sports mode 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 use for?
That’s indicating the gears
@@Red5oh oh great so for good acceleration which should we take?
My 2015 camry won't allow you to come close to the red line. It will automatically shift gear which is really dumb.
Yup Toyota has programmed it that so you don’t get too close redline and forget to upshift. I’m sure a tune can solve that
Why would you want to redline?
On the gear selector do I have to put it in the S mode? Also what does that do, Thanks!
You don’t have to put it in S mode. S allows for sporty shifting
@@Red5oh Thanks!
@@Red5ohWhat does sporty shifting mean?
I don't recommend going up high gears at low km/h
Yeah it’s pretty height but gears are stacked pretty close. In normal it would be in 8th by default. It would deny 8th gear if it would be lugging the engine
Staying in 5th gear on the highway does improve your gas mileage
I’d expect the 8th gear to give the best mpg on the highway as usually the highest gear is best for fuel economy
What is the purpose with an automatic?
It allows you to hold the gear longer and have a bit more fun with auto lol
Do you take your foot off the gas when shifting?
You don’t have to but I tend to do it results in a smoother downshift
Where is the rear mirror wiper?
No rear mirror wiper on Camrys
What happens if you use the paddle shifters while in driving mode on an xse ?
It will give you manual control but if you do not use the paddles for 5-6 seconds it would revert back to automatic shifting which is neat.
This question may sound dumb but i have a camry 2018 se so do all i need to do is put it on s and then use the paddle shifters or can i just use them with putting it on S?
You can use it in normal mode (D) too. You don’t have to switch to S
So what happens if i put it on sports mode (S) and what are the plus and minus for on the gear box for?
@@samuelgarcia2573 sport mode in general will allow for better throttle response. As far as paddles it will hold the gear longer
Thank you for the information have a great day!
I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but I have a 2018 Toyota Camry. When coming to a complete stop, like a stoplight, do I downshift to 1st gear or would I stay in second?
You can manually downshift to 1 st gear. Fortunately it will also auto downshift for you as you come to a stop if you don’t wanna to paddle to 1st
Can I down shift while hitting breaks??
Yes you can and it will actually be smoother than without brakes
Does it hurt the transmission if u always using manual mode
Nope it has no impact on your transmission as long as you’re not rev limiters constantly
Does this work with the 2018 Toyota Camry se
It should!
When you use S mode, does it disable protection? Like, is there a chance you could damage your car's transmission or engine while using it?
Nope the protection is still there so if you forget to shift it will shift for you before redline if you forget to do so
@@Red5oh is there a way to turn that off? For education reasons ofc.
@@v.rocky111 I’m sure if you tune the car you can have it removed but otherwise on a stock car you cannot
do you have to hit the brakes to shift up or down or can you do it while still hitting the gas?
You can upshift or downshift while hitting the gas. If you downshift while hitting the gas it may not be smooth but no issues really
@@Red5oh also do can you switch to sports mode while driving or do you have to be stopped?
@@fcbrownface3357 it can be done while driving!
240 on the dash??
on a camry?
It’s the special trd edition 😂
kilometers, not mph lol
Is it true that you are not supposed to downshift into first gear while still moving?
Nope you can downshift into 1st gear while moving as long as you’re speed allows for it. I personally just let the car downshift into 1 when I’m using paddles
Try shifting to first when your going under 10MPH, and shift up to second when accelerating at around 10 mph too
@Red5oh does this work with the 2013 models as well?
Yeah if it has paddle shifters it will follow the same pattern
It doesn't need to have paddle shifters. The 2018-2023 Camry still has slap shift and I'm guessing the 2013 Camry probably has slapshift.
It's called Sequential shifting for both cars and it's either slapshift or paddles or BOTH
Lol if you pull back on the shifter it goes from 8-4th
It would drop you to lowest gear possible
Very vague instructional video. He doesn't explain a lot of important aspects
What exactly do you think I missed? I tried to cover the basics and break it down enough so a beginner could follow. I intentionally didn’t make it too technical as a beginner won’t be able to understand and just complicate things further lol
Is it safe to down shift to slow down? What that hurt the tranny?
Yes it’s perfect safe to do so
@@Red5oh Cool. Sometimes I use my pedal shifter to help me slow down while breaking to a stop. I thought it will mess up my transmission if I make that to an habit.
respectfully bro why were you in 8th gear at 40 km/h....
Lol see my other response
Seems kinda... pointless to me?
To use paddle shifters in Camry? Well yes it's an economy car but paddle shifters do add fun to the car.
First!
Yes sir!
Omg im so confused
What part do you need help with?
@@Red5oh everything lol I know you mentioned the car has to be in drive but I also have this s should I put my car on that s? I guess I just need ro rewatch the video lol
@@uptownshorty143 you can put it on s to go into full manual mode or you can just use the paddles in normal driving mode
What’s up FES?!!
FES? Lol
