Don't do these things while driving with paddle shifters!! So many people are scared to use the paddle shifters because they don't know how, and they're afraid to mess up their car/transmission. I previously made a video teaching you how to drive an automatic car in manual mode. Now that I have my paddle shifters installed people ask how to use them so I figured it would be a great time to put out a POV driving tutorial/guide to help you learn how to use the paddle shifters on your car to have a bit more fun as I do in my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude. My paddles are the paddles from the SRT / Trackhawk which is why they are larger than the standard paddles that come on the Jeeps. Paired with the K&N Cold Air Intake sound and the aFe Power Catback exhaust, it makes for some fun especially when going under tunnels!

I really appreciated the video! I checked a couple other videos before I got to this one and finally understood how to see, feel, and hear what would happen and how the car would react. Funny though, when I first attempted doing paddle shifters before seeing this video it sounded terrible and didn't understand why I went to such high RPM's; though after watching this video I had a better understanding and I had to test my new car in front of my "car-buff" uncle in-law I actually shifted properly with not being embarrassed and he really liked my new Nissan Altima SR. Other videos only showed the number changes and rpms but you couldn't hear or see the speed while on the road changes. This video was great. BRAVO!
Really great for down hill trailer towing. Allows motor braking rather than continual foot braking. Really useful for real downhills like in Colorado.

I don't have paddle shifters, but a manual mode on my shifter, and for some reason, I'm always scared of going above 4000rpm bc I get anxious that my transmission will blow or something catastrophic. I know it won't, but the thought is still there and it stops me from having fun😂

Sport mode, in a lot of cars, also adds artificial engine noise. My 2020 330i does this and it can get annoying but you can turn it off in the settings.

Paddle shifters on my 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid and I’ve always been afraid to use them but babygirl struggles on hills
Also make sure to check your engine and trans code if you have a wet clutch you never have to worry because it lasts the life of the car

Had to use these in Colorado. Wasn't sure how they worked. In an Acura RDX, you use them in sport mode. Seems like the rpms were high in 1st or 2nd gear. I tried not to brake so much. It was a little stressful. Hope I didn't ruin the engine.
Super useful when going down a steep hill. To save your brakes from overheating you can downshift once or twice to engine brake.
Remember, brakes are cheaper than an engine

I haven’t! Nobody else drives my Jeep but me so my seat is always cranked as far back as it can go all the time 😂

With gas prices the way they are I'm not even trying to press mine. Usually when I use the paddle shifter I add the sport mode on it 😅

Hi, I’m driving a golf gti mk5 dsg. I’m wondering when driving in sports mode and coming to a stop, do I actually have to downshift automatically? I believe I down shifted to gear 1 too rapidly and my rpg surges and its somewhat jerks. Just doesn’t feel right.
as i am gaining high speed i press the positive paddle shifters two times intermittently between and then at still high speed i press the negative paddle shifter to gain a huge boost of power! Am i not supposed to do this?

I’ma stranger when it comes to using the paddle shifters. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee as well and I love hearing it scream coming down a open street. I’m just not accustomed to how to use them like that and it is a mental thing cuz I thought I fucked sum shit up

I don’t really get the point when there is no clutch. Except Maybe using the engine to Slow down a bit in the snow rather than the brakes. Are you supposed to let off the gas quickly when you paddle shift up a gear??
When you drop it wouldn’t you red line since your dropping a gear?
Not necessarily, as long as you only downshift at a reasonable rpm
When you shift do you take your foot off the gas then after you shift put your foot back on the gas or do you shift while on the gas

I managed to answer my own question about the, "tapping the gas pedal" feature. Turns out it's for downshifting. Once I reach a stable speed:
I lift my foot off the gas pedal to briefly and in a very shallow kind of way, tap my foot twice on the gas pedal. You only need to press the pedal down a tiny little bit and do not want to push it all the way down to the floor.
For example, I was in 6th gear and did this and the engine dropped down to 4th gear. The car slowed my vehicle down and in a moment or two went back to its normal shifting patterns.
I can see this being helpful if you want extra breaking assistance for a short time and I'm sure people can figure out their uses for it as well.

Getting a muffler/resonator delete on my car, wanted to use my paddle shifters, when coming to a complete stop like at a red light do I have to down shift ?
You don’t ever have to down shift, only time you down shift is make some sound boom down shift you get the rumble now accelerate a little bit and throw it back in drive , then boom repeat

It will go up/down twice if it will not cause damage doing so.
What percentage tints are on your rear and front windows?

You don’t need to, unless you are engine braking.

Yes, that’s how you can get into higher RPMs and harness some high end power

normally no I tried it on my last car (chevrolet cruze 2012) and it refused to downshift
I've heard there's a feature where a person double taps the gas pedal while accelerating and this forces the car to change to shift up to the next gear right away instead of doing so on its own timing. I've tried this a few times with no luck. I haven't even been and to confirm or deny it exists.

Might depend on the car but in my car you have to press the paddle while in sports mode to activate manual mode. So yes, you should be able to drive in sport mode without paddle shifters.
Only time i use paddles is when it is really slippery. 8 gears in My pegeout 2019 5008 GT it is so damn clicky for casual driving it just suck. But if you want to pretend to be a f1 driver it may be fun

I know I’m late but i have a 2009 Chevy Malibu and it doesn’t have the numbers to show what gear you are in. How do I know?
Edit: I did notice when I shift up the rpm’s stay at 4k and when I downshift it goes to 3 and stays at 3.
I also had a 2018 Buick Cascada Automatic and when I went into manual and was shifting my pistons blew and my dealership told me that if I kept using manual my car would’ve broken down. Any reason why?

Hit the brake and click the down shift multiple times until it’s on 1st to stop. That part you did not explain it at all
You should be braking to slow down and down shifting as the RPMs fall between 1400-2k

You will accelerate faster. I do downshifts while overtaking or when connection lane on a highway is short.

I use the paddle shifters primarily for fuel economy. I try to keep my rpms at or below 2000 rpms no matter what speed im at. Its a little game i play and i try to see if i can get my mpg close to 40 in my subaru crosstrek. Ive been able to get over 40 mpg for good stretches on the highway actually. This is the exact opposite thing to do if you’re going for that race car sound! LOL!

@@beeastman1235Your car will not let you cause damage. It is programmed to only let you shift to a gear if it is safe to do so. It may cause additional wear, but really no more than say aggressive acceleration would.

I was like that to its not hard. Like he said you wont blow up your transmission😂 it has safety features to prevent you from making a big mistake when shifting. Just down shift at 1500-2500rpm and upshift at 3000-4000 just to get use to it. Trust me its less complicated than it seems

@@benyaminhekmat5517 It will lower it by itself if u dont do it. So you’ll never be at a stop in 4th gear for example. Also u can use it anytime road or freeway. Obviously on the road you’ll have to be down shifting and up shifting way more

You shouldn’t put the RPMs too high by doing that - it is useful for going down mountains though!
On my 3rd WK2 at this point. No point in using the paddles for racing around in the Jeep. Press the shifter, wait...wait... oh there's the limiter.. oh...wait...there's the next gear. So it isn't useful for stoplight pulls because you will never get the next gear right. The faster the WK2 model, the more unlikely you can make the shift on time. In any model, i recommend traction control and whatever that eco mode does, turn them off is must, literally always. The larger motors 5.7 Hemi and up especially will break the tires loose and traction control will absolutely ruin your day.
Def useful to know how to use gears on hilly terrain, coming down from a high speed because Sub SRT jeep brakes really suck. I only downshift to 2nd gear unless completely stopped. Tip, when coming down from high speeds to a stop, downshift down to 2 and then click the shifter over to automatic mode from about 15-25mph or so to avoid that harsh 1st gear downshift.
I can't believe you did these mods to the V6. It isn't a bad engine, but it is a dog compared to any other variant. For me, i wouldn't take the risk of getting pulled over going slow in the noisy V6. To each their own though.
I love that at a glance in your rearview it is hard to tell which jeep is which and i promise you upgrading to at least the 5.7 (my 2nd wk2) there is nothing like dogging a V6 who is driving fast in what looks like the same truck. They don't know until they see that front end lifting behind them or hear that sweet hemi v8 exhaust note in front of them. Even the 5.7 will run into the limiter at 118 pretty quickly. I'm not sure my V6 ever hit the limiter.

Green tape on the upshift and red tape on the downshift, for gear changes in corners, if your shifters move with the wheel.
NOTE: With my Supercharged Jaguar, I once did a double downshift and blew fuel injectors and guess what - EXPENSIVE !!!

@@beeastman1235 - thank you for your irrelevancy. However, my post relates to ANY care where the paddle shifters move with the wheel - the Jag is just one example. Whereas other cars including the DB11, the shifters are static and do not have the same problem.

You don’t have to be in sport mode in all vehicles, you just need to have paddles enabled in other modes
