On Mercedes, if you hold down left (downshift) paddle shifter while cruising, it will automatically select the best gear for overtaking (passing). But keep in mind, it will go into manual mode and you will have to shift up if necessary! For example you are cruising at 1600RPM, there is a vehicle in front of you and you wait for the perfect moment to overtake, hold down left paddle shifter and gearbox will select gear around 3000-4000RPM (depends on engine Diesel or Petrol), of you are ready to go. From years of experience driving on snow and ice with Nisan GTR35 and MB GLS63, I've found it much safer to just using "slippery" mode than using manual mode. In fact, it may be dangerous downshifting in slippery conditions as the sudden deceleration may trigger a slide.
You do that on snowy, icy roads. It won't damage your box or engine. Unless you're running at 100mph and go straight to 2nd. Manual guys done it for ages in winter time

Great tips! Thanks. In non-AMG Mercedes you may not have the manual button but if you have Individual mode among the selectable driving modes you can program it to be Manual in that mode, effectively giving you a manual switch. Now I’m keen to try it out thanks to your tips.

Just as a side note: If you're taking your car to the track, or if you are driving hard in twisty roads, engine braking is NOT how you maintain control of your car properly. The brakes are there for a reason and driving hard is all about weight management and weight balance going into a corner. You will never see professional, or race drivers using engine braking. Hey David, thanks! I’d recommend getting one with 3m tape if your worried about them falling off. It should not budge. I spent an hour this weekend getting a 3m taped window mount off my windscreen, it was stuck so solid. Thought I’d never remove it that glue is so strong but kept going using dental flow and old credit cards 😅. I have heard the ones on www.dsg-paddles.com are good.
Maybe the same thing like the sport motorcycles when changing gears up without releasing the acceleration-TIP 8-it's a faster way to change gears but this will decrease the engine's life;recomanded to release the acceleration
@@_JEUDI the title states “8 tips for using paddle shifters” so my comment is absolutely valid. 43’s, 53’s etc are not proper AMG no matter what you think
Two things I must comment on, firstly what you refer to as semi-automatic is NOT really semi-automatic it is a manual override of the fully auto system. Secondly what you say about not lifting your foot when changing up is true but a lot of older auto drivers will still lift their foot because in the old days autos if you didn't lift your foot it was like getting a kick in the back. I taught my daughter how to do block changes in a manual but her instructor said it was bad for the engine. When I next saw him I told him he was talking utter rubbish as all professional drivers are taught to block change for a smoother drive and in defensive driving, it can be a great asset.
I have a question. If im in lets say 4th gear and for some reason i had to come to a full stop and didnt have time to down shift, is it okay to get to a full stop while still in 4th gear then downshift after i have already stopped? or should i downshift till the first gear before i eventually reach a full stop?
My tuned C450/C43 is faster manually shifting at 5,600 RPM due to hitting hire torque in the next gear (rather than the computer letting you go to redline where the boost falls off)….. so I have to drive with paddles to control my up shifts at the correct RPM
I can't find paddle shifter extensions for 2017 C63s coupe for less than $250. I see the knock aftermarket ones for the sedan for real cheap, like $50 or below but for some reason the ones for the coupe are all really expensive... Does the sedan actually use different paddle shifters than the coupe? Also, engine braking does cause wear on your trans and engine. I was a master automotive technician for 9 years and also an engine builder. An auto school we learned about engine braking and yes while it was common practice in the old days the way new engines and transmissions are built and the way they mate to each other is not the same as it used to be. Engine braking does cause faster wear on your transmission and it also causes your transmission oil to heat up and break down faster. I have taken apart many transmissions and motors and seen the direct result of engine braking. It's not catastrophic and when done properly it's okay every now and then but it will increase wear.
Hey mate sorry for the slow reply. Working through lots of comments this month. The Sedan should use the exact same paddle shifters as the coupe so it shouldn't be a problem. Beware the prices vary a lot on these because people mostly drop ship them straight from China, some for large profits. Generally all the same stuff re-packaged. If your still struggling to find a pair let us know and I can help :)
@@ABAUTOAMG thanks so much for the info bro, I really appreciate it. If you have any suggestions on where to purchase the shifter extensions from I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again
I have a 2009 sl63 but im scared to be using the paddle shifters all the time because i dont want to ruin the engine and the transmission, do u think i shouldnt worry about it and drive it as i like?
Don‘t worry! Just note that if you‘re in manual mode (after Pressing the Manual Button) the car won‘t change gears, no matter what. so make Sure to time your shifts right 👍🏻
If we are coming to a stop 🛑, can we not just stop instead of downshifting? Is there any prob if we do that? Or we should always downshift and slowly stop?
If you hold the upshift paddle then yes it will go back into automatic mode, but if you hold the downshift paddle then it will not go into automatic mode, it will actually skip as many gears as necessary to get into the lowest gear possible at your current speed. So say I'm in 8th gear going at 50mph, if I hold the downshift paddle then the car will drop to 5th gear and then eventually 3rd gear.
Thanks btp589 that's useful to know! I've only ever used up paddle to swap between modes so I wasn't aware the down paddle had this feature to jump to lowest gear! All good stuff! :)
@@ABAUTOAMG Yes, holding downshift paddle is awesome. Holding it for about 1 second will skip a bunch of gears to get you into the right powerband. Holding it down for even longer will downshift you all the way into the lowest gear possible, but it's sometimes too high and is out of the powerband, I think this is mainly if you want to slow down via engine braking.
@@BN99239 In my AMG e63s (and probably several other mercs), if you need a quick downshift (for say, roundabouts), you can hold in the downshift, and then slam the accellerator all the way in, ant the car will rapidly downshift to the lowes possible gear. But another neat trick (though I rearly use it) for those inclined to stay in automatic mode, is to rather quickly just tap the accelerator all the way to the bottom (and release quickly again), and that will also trigger a rapid downshift to the lowest gear possible, which will last for a few seconds. The latter is also practical for certain roundabouts, corners etc:)
Can you really only go into full manual if your model has that M button? Are you not able to do the same using the dynamic indiviudal and using manual?
@@ABAUTOAMG honestly at first I was in your shoes as well but after researching and talking to folks at AMR I went with them. They are pricey but I get peace of mind that I’ll have a performance bump with no hassle. I mean there are other tuners like Eurocharged and others which are willing to sell it cheap but honestly don’t bother because they mess up with safety parameters and such. Still working on my TH-cam channel so I know how much hard work goes into making content. I enjoy your editing and creativity that goes into making your videos🤙🏽
Thanks Darian, I love TH-cam and making videos. It's a lot of work but such a pleasure!
Thanks! Great and informative video. May I also ask if we can change from comfort mode to sports mode when stepping on the accelerator?
No problem! Thanks for watching. It should be fine to change drive mode ehile accelerating :)
@@ABAUTOAMG cool thanks!!
Yes, you can
Great video, good tips…subscribed :). !
Thanks Phil!
You can get full manual if you don't have the button. You can chose manual in individual drive mode.
Thanks Damian, great tip!

2nd Gear 5,500 Revs 🙌 💥
Love the channel new to your vids but very much enjoy 👍😊
Thanks! Welcome aboard! Lots of exciting content coming this year :)
I want to fit those red extenders to my c43. However, most reviewers say the sticky pad isn’t up to it. Where did you get yours? Thnx. Love your C43 vids.
Brilliant video.
Thanks Errol! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Maybe the same thing like the sport motorcycles when changing gears up without releasing the acceleration-TIP 8-it's a faster way to change gears but this will decrease the engine's life;recomanded to release the acceleration
Thanks man🙏🏼
Thanks it really helped me
You are very welcome :)
Correction - in a "proper" AMG like the 63S, pulling in both paddle shifters from a stop engages launch start
This is not what he was explaining but thanks for clarifying that you drive a proper amg mate
@@_JEUDI the title states “8 tips for using paddle shifters” so my comment is absolutely valid. 43’s, 53’s etc are not proper AMG no matter what you think
These tips are only for MB? Or will be useful on a VW CC instead? Are u from UK,dude?
Damn thank you I always thought downshift damage my engine
Bought one yesterday, c43 wagon😄
Nice one congrats! 🎉
I have a question. If im in lets say 4th gear and for some reason i had to come to a full stop and didnt have time to down shift, is it okay to get to a full stop while still in 4th gear then downshift after i have already stopped? or should i downshift till the first gear before i eventually reach a full stop?
Hey no problem! Most cars should jump to 1st gear for you once you stop if you forget. If not should be fine to downshift to 1st once stopped.
My tuned C450/C43 is faster manually shifting at 5,600 RPM due to hitting hire torque in the next gear (rather than the computer letting you go to redline where the boost falls off)….. so I have to drive with paddles to control my up shifts at the correct RPM
I suggest doing a dechrome on your car, and a grill update
Thanks! Dechrome + Panoramic grill would be nice :)
Excellent
Good video! Appreciated
Your welcome! Glad it was helpful :)
Maybe you should put on some old tires you dont use so you dont wear out these new ones and put the car in drift mode.
Any recommendations on where to get these paddle shifter extensions?
*If you have an 8 speed gearbox force into 8th gear with paddle shift up if doing above 50mph*
….and, I’ve started to use those paddles for engine braking….dose save wear on the brakes.!
I use this on occasion as well - useful for overtaking!
Why do you got a performanc steeringwheel when you dont got one
1st gear going fast still makes sense LOL
Can you really only go into full manual if your model has that M button? Are you not able to do the same using the dynamic indiviudal and using manual?
Where’d you get your paddle shifter extensions from?
Hey AB you got any links for paddle shift extenders? I keep getting sent the incorrect ones? By the way another great vid thanks for the tips!
Hey! I'm looking around at the moment and ordering some in the test to try and find the best ones for everyone. Hopefully will be reviewing some soon!
@@ABAUTOAMG Yeah it seems to be hard to get the correct ones for the c43 facelift for some reason
Just bought my 2nd pair of paddles which I will be returning. Wow so many cheap after market products which don't even work
I have big hands but interested in the extra surface areas going round around roundabouts.
The extenders are handy for that extra reach :)
Thanks for the tips! Maybe I will finally try to drive my g63 in manual
You are welcome! Enjoy your G63 👍
Still trying to work out how to control the revs before engaging first gear? Any help?
you should tune your car. it completely makes it a beast. I tried going back to stock file and hated it lol
What kinda tune did you go for? It's only warranty really that's holding me back :)
The thing I love about AMR is that they leave every safety parameters untouched when tuning our cars. I have been rocking it since 2018 on my 18 c43. I have been following u since you got your car and I like your content so when I see you enjoying your car that much I say to myself what you’d be like after getting the tune lol.
Also I forgot to mention, I got get my services done at the dealer. No issues. My friend has a cat delete and they dont say anything lol. its a ecu tune. I got the handheld one which I can revert back to whenever I want
I find that easing up on the acceleration, shifting gears, and then accelerate provides better performance in my 2021 CLA 250.
2nd gear full throttle go above 4000rpm then immediately break hard. You will give yourself one big big smile.
