      ex-Nikon user (D3, D750 and pro glass), happy with the A7 IV so far but man, there are some serious hiccups.. like picture Playback does not go from one card to the other, you have to go in menus and select which card to read from.. Also deleting photos always takes you back to next photo instead of respecting playback direction.. Also the WB menu options are terrible user interface, although the white balance itself works great.

    I'm a 73 year old, strictly an amateur/enthusiast currently shooting with the A7 IV. I love the camera, and yet my new A7R V is arriving in the next week. So, the R5 seems to be overkill for me, but here is how I rationalize. 3 reasons. I shoot primarily birds, grand children and landscape. I have a bad back and knees, so for my birding, lens size matters. I currently shoot with the Sony 70-350mm G. That only gives me 525mm and 14 mp in crop mode. The extra mp in the RVshould really improve my coping ability. 2nd, the improved AF. For birds and grand children, ( both very fast, erratic subjects)I really want those little eyes to sparkle so I'll take any improvement in AF that I can get. And finally, like I said, I'm 73 yers old and don't know how long I'll be able to do this, and, I can afford it, so I'm giving myself a treat. (besides my wife says I can. LOL)

      Hey if the wife says you can... then go for it!! I'm very excited to see how the AI Autofocus goes on the A7RV. Enjoy your new camera @j16m02 and thanks for commenting.

      you've got a couple years on me, im still a young 69, i haven't tried the 70-350 G, i opted for the 150-500 which is an amazing lens and very sharp, its not as heavy as the 200-600 1/2 lb heavier than the Tamron, but man the 70-350 at 1.38ibs goodness... i also use my canon 300mm fd 2.8 when i need more light but for sure use my Manfrotto monopod, and manual focus isn't that bad I'm getting quite good at it, now for my kids, i use the 50mm1.2 i got such a great deal on it i could not pass it up, it really upped my keeper rate on my 5-year-old ive also got the 851.8 sony but the 50mm kills it. have you tried the Clear Image Zoom??? can really pump out the crop for the longer reach, only downside its in jpeg, and 15 or 8 megipixels live long and prosper sir.....

      @@mysingingmonsterspmg I rented that Tamron 150-500, and you're right, it's pretty remarkable. I just can't get past the weight.That would be near ideal though. As for clear image zoom, I thought that was only for video. Am I mistaken?

    • @mysingingmonsterspmg
      @mysingingmonsterspmg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j16m02 The clear image zoom is for stills, and depending on which crop you have it on you can get an additional 2X6 zoom, and whats sweet you get the zoom in the magnifier as well so you can really fine tune your autofocus, or manual focus with focus peaking, to get the max you'll be in jpeg, and fine at 8 megapixel i believe. at that crop theres no blowing it up or it will pixilate. but the thing is if you need to get in close you can, its worth trying out and test for yourself to see if it will work for you, i do use it with my manual lenses i think like with my canon 500mm fd 4.5 L lens i can get like 1800mm

    This camera is fantastic. Photo and video is incredible quality and incredibly sharp. Autofocus in incredibly fast and incredibly sharp. Low light performance for video is phenomenal.
    Disclaimer: We only shoot 1080p video (weddings) but it looks great regardless and very sharp. The active stabilization setting is insane and gives you smooth movement even handheld which is game changing, throw on a gimble and its even crazier. It's funny you mention the service issue. My camera is in the repair center for the second time. I have multiple defect-issues, including random freezing and failure to recognize a lens, including the Sony G-Master. I have read that other owners received a whole new control board (chipset!) replacement for the A7-IV. That is NOT minor! I was hoping Sony would issue some sort of announcement, but it appears this is now being handled as a secret recall. You have to call and then ship it out for 2 to 3 weeks.
    My biggest issue is the lost days I spent trouble-shooting and tweaking settings. Early buyers had it WAY worse. They had to write to Sony multiple times and test out a wide variety of lenses and memory cards to prove that it was real. Sony appears to finally agree that it's the camera, not the users, and I got minimal pushback.
    But, I do love the features and design when it works. I hope this next fix is the last, so I can use it again!

    • @jemlang
      @jemlang  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear about the troubles you have had with the camera. It does seem like there have been a few people that have had issues. It does sometimes come with the territory of being an early adapter unfortunately. I went through the same thing with Apple products back in the day.
      Sony were great with the repair. Even though the issue was minor, they approved it as soon as they saw the video. Was a shame it took 2 months. But I'd still buy Sony and recommend them. And like you, I still love this camera!
      Hope you get the camera back soon and can start shooting with it again. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

    "Autofocus : the A7iv is so reliable" That is absolutely not my experience ! That may be true for non moving subjects, but I've been shooting or rather struggling with the A7iv for people running with the 70 200 GM2. While eye detect and tracking work great, only 30% of the shots are properly focused in wide area. The best results I got are in spot tracking at 6 FPS, about 70% of reasonably sharp pictures.
    We may agree though, I would say that the A7iv is reliable, the best shots are always misfocused.

As it is different to previous Sony bodies and other camera manufactures. @Nathancoolphoto has done a video about the hot shoe on Sony's with a hack for other bodies, but isn't needed on the A7IV. However he doesn't address the A7IV update in his video, this is something I found from using the A7III and A7IV, also other people in the commented about it on his video. What about IBIS without gimble and it's low resolution dim display?
    I have read that both IBIS and display are worst in this class compared to canon R6 II and Panasonic S5 II.
    I am also worried about overheating in the summer when hiking a little bit.
    I also read it's not very enjoyable to use with complicated menus and uncomfortable grip and knobs.
    Would you recommend a7 IV to someone who just wants to carry as little as possible (no gimble, no external monitors, no cage + lightweight f2.8 zoom lens without OIS) and does photography and video as a hobby?

    • @jemlang
      @jemlang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend the Sony A7IV for those things you are going to be using it for.
      Even though the IBIS and screen resolution aren’t ‘best in class’, They are still very good and very usable. It also has an active stabilisation option which will smooth out your footage even more with a slight crop if you need it.
      The comment about not being enjoyable is subjective. Personally I find the ergonomics, menu and dials to be well designed. The grip is quite comfortable even in my big hands.
      the camera has an option to operate in high temperatures. I’ve only had the high temp warning come up once. And that was when I had been using it in a hot room filming for over an hour at 4K. Even with the warning it still kept recording. (My Shinobi monitor had overheated and stopped working)
      Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@jemlang sounds like the disadvantages of a7 iv are minor. What would be the biggest advantages over Panasonic? Just 33mpix? I hear many people still love their Sony's but without having hands on experience it's hard to me to see the appeal compared to canon or Panasonic.

    • @jemlang
      @jemlang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marceln2 I very much agree that the disadvantages are minor. Reason why Sony is so popular is that they are way ahead of the market with their mirrorless tech. Canon were very late to the game. Panasonic were ok, but their auto focus was holding them back. Now they have moved over to phase-detection auto focus in the S5 II, this makes this camera a serious contender.
      If I was completely new to photography and wanted a full frame system, I'd be seriously comparing the A7IV and S5 II. The differences between the 2 are a lot closer now than previous models.
      Advantage of the S5 II over the A7IV is the open gate 6k video at 4:3 however this might not be a feature you would use. Apart from this, the A7IV still has more advantages like the 33mp sensor, more dynamic range, 5.5 stop ibis.
      The other benefit is there is lots of support online from creators for Sony because they have been ahead of the game so if there is a larger community. Not saying Panasonic doesn't have a community, just Sony has a larger community because they have more market share.

      There are so many things to consider when looking at new cameras and which one to invest in. Out of those 2 options you are looking at I would personally go for the A7IV because it is full frame. But I haven't looked much into the XH2S so I can't do a direct comparison.
      One thing to keep in mind is that there is no perfect camera. Work out what features are non-negotiables for you then go from there.

      Thanks for watching and commenting Aleem. From what you have described, I would go the A7IV over the A7C. The A7C does have some great features, but it is pretty much an A7III in a smaller body with the added Auto focus features. It doesn't do 10bit 4:2:2 which I think is a big upgrade. And if you are doing commercial work you will get more longevity from the A7IV.

    • @jemlang
      @jemlang  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are just shooting portraits you will be very happy with the image quality from the A7III. The main jumps in technology with cameras at the moment are in video capabilities. For photo the 3 things that the A7IV will be better with is 1: bump in resolution, 2: colours are improved slightly (but if you shoot in raw this won't be an issue) 3: Autofocus is improved. Hope this helps. If you need more info feel free to ask. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      Janis, I use the D750 alongside a Sony A7III and now an A7IV. @Jem has it right: for portraits (especially if you're shooting raw), you can be happy with the A7III (I do so love eye-autofocus!). But if you're out of the studio and moving around your portrait subjects (esp families with kids, or fashion models moving around), the improved autofocus of the A7IV over the A7III is well worth it, imho.

      Personally I would go full frame over APSC. But having said that, for what you are looking at I think the FX30 could be a winner. The quality that has been coming out from that camera is really impressive and there are some great lenses that are available. Plus any photos you take on it are still going to be good. Toughts on the a7iv vs r6 mark 2?
    Edit: Would appreciate your opinion :)

    • @jemlang
      @jemlang  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spec wise the Canon R6 mark II is behind the A7IV. Lower resolution at 24 megapixels compared to 33 in the A7IV, Video is 6k Sensor downsampled to 4k when the Sony is 7k, slightly less image stabilization, and a few other specs. I can't find if it does 10bit 4:2:2 video either. It does 4k 60 uncropped however as I mention in my video I haven't had an issue with that. But some people might.
      The Canon is more expensive and you're getting less of a camera compared to the A7IV. If you're a Canon shooter then it would make sense to buy. But if not OR you are buying your first camera, I would go the Sony A7IV over the R6 mark II.
