@@Ropewatch Keethe isn't really a dark side..
It all ends in ash. I guess you could say that it reverts back to that gray formless world that it all started out as.
Here's a fuckin game theory for ya: there has already been at least one worldly cycle (age of ancients to age of fire to age of dark) before dark souls takes place. The age of ancients we know is the result of the world becoming ash, and the dragons we fight are the strongest of the previous cycle that survived to the end (since we already know especially strong people can become dragons)
the world of ash is also the deep sea that Aldrich envisioned
@@heliopyre our world...maybe
@@Edward-fh1xt Well King's Field had to have happened first thanks to the implication in the Old Moonlight spell and it included a beginning of the world itself in its backstory, which we don't have in Dark Souls (the Age of Ancients isn't the beginning of the world, since it's already formed).
@@aromardu Yeh! I'm surprised that someone else know that! I though for a time that literally everyone ignore that truth for convenience!
Gewn (with help of that backstabbing asshole Seath) only usurp power from old gods and basically framed them for all evil to justify his rule (most clear Demon Souls where god Sybal is revealed to be in fact The Old One
, though we fight with his third "dragon god of deep sea" servant, not him personally). Because of that Nameless King to atone his banishment attempt to solve the war and kill dragon god of earth and darkness Valad. It is when he learn that old eldritch abomination was in fact one who hold the Abyss in check and all leaks were result of imbeciles disturbing him, not his vile intend. It is why he decide to join dragons against his father to atone yet again.
Anyway, after world was swallowed by darkness some powerful lords usurp power of Valad brother, god of sky and fire and create fake sun to push away abyss (with dark souls being power of Valad). Problem is that dragon powers literally eat souls to power they magic so whole cycle is basically a bullshit. The thing is that true way is to end age of fire and elect new Dark Lord so it would pull back abyss yet again (what basically happen in DS3). Is only way to stop age of darkness. Future events of Demon Souls and Bloodborne are always related to someone trying usurp power of dragons again.

I appreciate you for making reference to DS2. Its lore is background info and details the struggle of trying to break the cycle with Giants and powerful souls, and the idea of the cycle as a whole. There are some people out there, such as Jake the Ashen Hollow, who absolutely refuse to acknowledge DS2 and its lore out of spite and not for some logical reason. That's why you're the best at what you do, you tell it how it is or how it can be interpreted with little to no personal bias going into it
You’re 100% right and I think DS2 haters simply refuse to acknowledge how the lore of the game assists us in understanding the canon of the curse. It’s a shame and at this point is such a joke. Their loss, Aldrich is one the best characters in the series and Vendrick was a predecessor to the Lothric princes.
I love that there's Tolkien's Elvish in these games.

Just as a heads up, another parallel with Norse mythology is present. Ragnarok, the end of the world, is about the CURRENT world ending for a new one to be born. The gods selfishly guarded against the inevitable end and rebirth, or the path of the world, and tried to prevent it.
dark souls had significant lost potential by not including the giant wolf trying to eat the sun tbh
Come to think of it doesn't Odin collect the greatest of Warriors to perpetually, battle, die and rise in Valhalla so that they can be used s fodder to try and hold off Ragnarok?
Baldur and his brother are bae though.
The Aesir all know their place in Ragnarok. Some of the tales, such as Balder's story seem to have pushed it back, but it is up to interpretation if it was intended to. No matter anyway cause he did die and only await the aftermath of Ragnarok.

Yep. It's all coming full circle now xD
There’s one particular thing I noticed that seem to be a recurring motif in dark souls 3
A kind of branches and tree like attributes that seem to show up in a lot of bosses and creatures in the game. I’m just curious is if there is some sort of explanation that I am missing.
You have the weird trees growing out of people in the first areas of the game after acquiring fast travel. You have the pontiff who after half his health goes down sprouts tree limb like wings, and there’s also those angel like creatures in both lothric castle and Dreg Heap (I am not referring to the angel knights) and I’m wondering if it has anything to do with some sort of residual of the chaos bed. It after all was a giant tree, I am also curious if there is some sort of connection between that fire and the one found at the profaned capital, which might make sense if there is since the pontiff have some sort of connection with it as well.
Some dude banged a tree woman and thats how Sulyvahn was made
@@XERX_740 Sulyvahn came from the Painted World. His mom was one of those tree chicks and he hides his wings from his buddy Aldrich because he was made fun of as a kid by the wolf puppies. They picked on him because his dad wasn't cool enough to join the millwood dudes. That's why he has self-esteem issues now and why he left the painted world. He wanted a fresh start, but he wasn't allowed to be in charge in Irithyll because he wasn't from there and they thought he was hiding something.
Sulyvahn realized they were going to find out about his tree wings so he called up his old friend Aldrich, whom he met at some point after leaving the painting, and said something like "Bruh, there's this weird god dude/chick hybrid that is like, super nutritional. You should totally eat him. I'll spike his drink, you do your slime thing, and I'll be in charge here." Aldrich was like, "Aight" because he's a bro, and that's how Gwyndolin got ate.
In the beginning, there were only stone giants and great archtrees. As the world ends, mankind seeks to deify what remains of dragons, and the roots of ancient trees spread like a cancer in the undying. The last demon prince hides in the ruins of the great hollow tree.

I highly doubt that the profaned flame is like chaos because the profaned flame is arguably way worse than the flame of chaos because whereas the chaos flame brought about the creation of izalith and an entire race of living beings and even made the existing beings more powerful the profaned flame did the opposite it corrupted anyone who contacted it, it destroyed the profaned capital and it indirectly destroyed yhorm and his legacy not to mention both flames looks quite different

To the western audience maybe jorgmander is THE world serpent, but in the east, it's not the case. The Eastern world serpent is adi shesha, or ananta shesha(infinite snake), an important figure in both Hinduism an Buddhism. In Hinduism He represents time, and encircles the world and is responsible for the the start of the next cycle. Way more fitting then jorg. And this wouldn't be the first Hinduism inspired lore, manus is derived from mānu(the proganitor of mankind in Hinduism). The Ralf Griffith translation of veda added the s to manu, hence making his name 'manus'. Also adi shesha has multiple heads, that makes you think weather framt and kaath are different beings or not, maybe they are one entity with a very different goal from what we understand
Honestly I dont THINK I've ever smiled while reading that that's fucking awesome I love how all myths HAVE diffrent gods bit same animals as gods
Would this make "the world's logic" equivalent to Vishnu in relation to Kaathe then? I wonder if perhaps the name was changed in the west in order to make it more clear it could actually be referring to Ananta, to those who might be acquainted.
I always find it strange that Kaathe's priority in the first game is to let the fire die on its own while a Dark Lord rules humanity, while in the third game his goal is to usurp the fire for the Dark Lord. He never seems to want someone to actually put the fire out. Or maybe he believes a Dark Lord using the flame would accelerate its death? Idk.
Huh. I never realized Anor Londo was named in Sindarin.
@WGIYV anor/anar (sindarin/quenya) means sun, and I think londo comes from lond, like Harlond port in western shire
@WGIYV Yeah. It makes sense now, knowing what I do about the language, I just never thought to make the connection.
Assuming the intended meaning is "land of the sun", I believe a more correct name would have been Anordor/Anodor, Anardor/Anador or even Andor or Anor
My question is why Dark Souls used Sindarin lol. I'm not against it at all, but it seems so random, especially for a Japanese studio.
@@joshuacreeger9171 Really? That made me grin from ear to ear. Just makes me happy.
THESE TRANSLATIONS REVEAL SO MUCH, THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING THIS AMAZING VIDEO SERIES ABOUT THIS AMAZING GAME
I always found a lot of interesting connections between Dark Souls and mythologies.
Let's take the "Der Ring des Nibelungen" from Wagner. In that opera cycle Wotan (Odin) disrupts the order of the world by taking to himself the reingold, forged into a ring, a force of nature that should belong in the Reno river. With that force he reinvigorate the fleeting age of the gods and even use it to give light to his holy city, Valhalla. The ancient diety Erda, a diety that doesn't meddle with the other gods, tell him to shun the ring, but he didn't listen. Some time later this bring to the end of the age of gods forever (Götterdämmerung) by the actions of Siegfried (half human) and Brünnhilde (daughter of Erda).
Also in the Shinto folklore, Susanoo-no-Mikoto is the god of storms (Nameless king), brother to the goddess of the Sun Amateratsu (Gwyneviere?) and Tsukuyomi god of the moon (Gwyndolin).
These cooperations are really nice to see. After discovering the others and coming then to this new video-collab is so rewarding as I can spot different elements of style coming from each you. It's amazing, keep it up!
"In the end, the world's logic doesn't go from light to dark, it simply burns out and ash inherites the world [...]"

@@desty4030 Everything about Hollow Knight is just great to me. Maybe watching someone playing it for a while would make a difference. Like Millbee.
Dark souls 2 tells us that Light and Dark are actually the same. Different perspectives of the same flame. In that sense the serpents are actually the same as well. Whether it is Gwyn on the helm or some human, nothing really changes. I think that is reflected in how the serpents represent the two edges of "whole" World Serpent.
Yes, basically..
Choices in 1 are the same, but Light and Dark aren't. First Sin disrupted nature and Undead Curse forces Flame to be rekindled over and over agein. Age of Fire doesn't just go away on it's own, you need to defeat the Curse to let the Dark come. Bearer of the Curse escaped the cycle thanks to the crowns, but the world at larg was still stuck in it.
Kathe is just the other end of frampt. They don't have butts it's just a different serpent on the end
@@zipzap872 I heard that theory and in fact consider it as quite cool.. or it was confirmed?
DS2 > DS1 don't @ me.
In a lot of ways, this interpretation of the lore reminds me of how Odin is portrayed in God Of War: Odin knows Ragnarok is coming, and by all rights, it should be unstoppable. He should accept it, not fight it. Yet Odin will perform any action, no matter how vicious, cruel, or heartless, to either prevent it or to have some measure of control over its outcome.
Spoiler below...
Even place a curse on the Valkyries so that all the Nine Realms, including Jotunheim, home of the giants, are flooded with the undead. He overturns the world's logic, and makes life a hell on Earth for all beings, in the hope of preventing or at least delaying the end of Asgard.
Isn’t jotunheim the home of the giants?
Doesn’t make your point less true tho
@@skyzgone2953 That's a problem with the English terminology calling most things "giants" both Muspelheim and Jotunheim are home to Jætter, which can be anything from below human size to mountain size.
I'd say there are more similarities to Norse mythology than God of War, f.ex. Odin doesn't fight ragnarok, Odin fighting is part of ragnarok, like how Gwyn fighting the vaining light became part of the cycle instead of stopping it and that it was Gwyn reigniting the flame that destroyed the world, just like how the world shattering nature of ragnarok comes from the war of the gods and not because ragnarok is the end of our world. Ragnarok is the fate of the rulers/kings/gods (quite literally in fact) which is also something that can be compared to the lore of Dark souls, in which the entire cycle is much more a matter of changing the upper echelon and average mortals suffering because of it, than it just being a naturally occuring planetary cycle or something, where everyone loses.
@@omega1231 Odin did try to stop Ragnarok in Norse mythology, it's just that the things he did, like binding Fenrir, seem to lead to it rather than stop it. It was inevitable and he would have to fight in it eventually but it is true that he tried to defy it.
@@MonkAndra Odin didn't defy ragnarok, ragnarok was the result of him defying the natural order (or atleast the natural order as Hel sees it) as it comes about because Odin retrieves Balder from Helheim, making Hel go on the war path. That's also why Odin has been gathering an army specifically for the purpose of fighting Hel ever since Balder ended up in Helheim after Høder shot him, and the rest is prophecy.
My point is that Ragnarok is just something that happens as a consequence of the gods duking it out, not something anyone is fighting against because they all know it's inevitable, it's their fate, quite literally.
That excellent Jormangundr pronunciation tho
Well, there's always different ways to pronounce and see things, however, the most important thing when communicating, whether verbally, with signs, telepathically or in any other way, is that We understand each other and that, often times is the main reason we communicate, self-expression. Just My current view but yeah.
My loins twitched when I heard.
I'm not going to lie, I have no idea if the pronunciation is accurate or not, its just really pleasant to listen to + vaati's already great voice.
Its excellent listening
But... the name is Jörmungandr. Not Jormangundr o.o
But yes, the pronunciation was very good.
@Jan Jappie not really lmfao. Things can be passed down into the realm of accessible knowledge buddy.
After playing the Remastered for the first time, I started seeing it as the primordial serpents were pretty much the wisest of all who guided those within power. However, Gywn being the first known to defy the natural logic of the world, Frampt remained loyal to the one who ruled all while Kaathe retained his realistic reasoning that even a god shouldn't defy the natural order.
Damn.. This story is amazing..
The concept of the "Logic of the World" that you reference reminds me a lot of the Stoic usage of the terms Logos, the animating reason and logic that makes up the laws of the universe.

However, if you take the time to find out more, you realize how much shit you didn't know and how deep the lore goes. This is the same for Hollow Knight.

And then you ascend to the merky dead soil of a world wrecked by missfortune, betrayel, and misery
A failed world of pirates corrupted by their own lust and greed
That'd be kinda neat :0

Underwater Souls would be terrifying...
Aldrich most likely visioned the same scene we witness in cutscene after Filianore sends us forward in time. Those ash dunes look like a sea at first glance.
So No mans wharf but no insta death? Im up.
Been subbed for about 2 years now and have to say, you are the main reason why im in love with the souls series. Every video is so captivating and the stories are so well told. Keep up the good work! Cant wait to see what Sekiro has in store!
Great video, imagining the world serpents as these big powerful entities that really try to understand the world instead of just manipulating it makes them fit way better into the grand sceme of things in my mind. I guess that's the weakness of souls lore, some things feel a bit incoherent until you find out enough about them. Thanks for your efforts!
I can think of some things to make some videos;
- ghru
- lothric
- sens fortress
- Aldrich and his deacons
- seath
Lothric is pretty vague for an entire video
So from what I have gathered: (Just a thing I thought I'd do)
It is the nature of the world to end in darkness as light needs energy and no source will last forever. Those born to light will fear the darkness as they do not understand it. They do not understand the darkness for the darkness is humanity; an undefinable thing.
Therefore the children of light (Gwyn and the gods) extended the light which was only good for them by burning themselves and only leaving humanity, the darkness, behind to itself work as kindling. In the end they burn the world's future away to ash.
As such Change will always happen for, that is progression in time, those who resist time will burn away their future through futile determination.
Dark Souls requires determination to finish the game and light the fire to perpetuate destruction or to let it fade and through sacrificing your future and stability making the world progress and grow.
(further simplification) We fear change but we are at heart it's engine.
It's 2019 and there's still more lore in this game to share...
Who knew a fictional video game series had more complicated lore than real life. Great video anyways. I’ve been playing the soulsborne series for years now, but still come back to it.

SPAM R1!!!
*ends the video talking about Thor and Jörmungandr* I would like to thank Loki
As always amazing video, can't wait for the Siegmeyer, Nito and Gwyn Prepare to Cry videos
Vaati, you're by far the best. Can't believe I'm still learning new things about this game after playing since DS initial release.
Something weirdly satisfying hearing you say "Jormungandr", gotta admit.
Probably because his pronunciation was absolutely perfect.
I feel like Gwyn is often misunderstood about his Age of Fire. People say he was selfish. Yet ¿what would be of the world, should it sucumb to the Dark? Sure, it would mean the end of all life as it is known. So as it was with the Age of Ancients. But can you truly judge a king for doing all in his power to protect and sustain his kingdom? The people and all those who live in it? In the end, it is just delaying the inevitable, but would you just step aside as you see the whole world go dark? If you are the king, god, founder of the Age of Light and Fire ¿would you just let it all be consumed? It was his personal responsability, and his last act of altruism was consuming himself in order to kindle the fire. Gwyn was the Age of Fire, and he did all in his position to protect it and ensure the world would not be engolfed in shade.
In such a world as of DS, we should ask ¿who were its inhabitants, its founders, and who were the intruders or underdogs? Man is born from the dark soul, inherently contrary to the souls of lords of the age of fire. They and their people built the world. They were gods in their own right. The dark nature of man himself was its demise. So ya, as I see it, Gwyn did nothing wrong. Of course, we as humans would probably benefit from an age of dark (¿probably?).
True but as humans to look at it through the eyes of the cursed humans in the dark souls series it would be like throwing all of our will away to beings who proclaim themselves a higher power than us. Mankind in dark souls were condemned and enslaved due to their natural born affinity to the abyss. Something the self proclaimed "Gods" of lordran more than anything feared. Gwyn was right to fear the dark soul but the world itself became shackled and scarred due to his failure of understanding the dark for what it truly was. This even now mirrors into our own world were it seems as though one side of the world wants to move forward and forge a new fate for its self and the other side wants to cling to the ways of the old and do what has been deemed as natural order through the past and history.
I like to think that, When gwyn joined the soul of cinder, It was the only time that he battled to not see the world go dark, Not for power, Not for that "humans are going to be powerful" bullshit, Only a man that don't wanna see the world go dark
Your point only holds if we ignore ds2 and ds3, which both showed him using and betraying his comrades in order to prolong his rule. Removing man from history after the fight with dragons, banishing an entire race of creatures to the end of the world and placing a dragon to guard over them. Intentionally creating the undead curse and convincing mankind to offer up their humanities to prolong his fire and weaken themselves to the point that no man could be strong enough to become the dark lord to oppose him.
The thing is that you are taking dark as the meaning of everything going in a terrible or malignous way. Dark in this game i think that just refers to the dark soul, thus meaning that the age of dark is simply meaning the age of the creatures which come from this dark soul. I am not saying that your theory is wrong, since on dark souls all is convoluted as Solaire states. Also you can se to further sustain my point prosperous human/dark kingdoms, Carim Catarina and Astora.
@@Mestrinox Thing is, the race relationship is hard to explain. I mean, what the fuck was Gwyn before finding the lord soul? Just a tall and strong man?
I bet Frampt and Kaathe are connected like Catdog
Maybe In the dark ending in ds3 there’s serpents on either side so they may be all snake snake
Having chills again, wonderful job Vaati
Vaatividya's voice soothes my nerves as I recover from surgery. A fan of the work.
This is so beautiful. Thank you Vaati and Loki
👁👄👁👍
Your emoji combination...is horrific D:
Cover thy face child, Doth thou seek thine rod?!
Hollow Knight music?!?! D8
I swear to god Vaati, if you've played Hollow Knight and think you can just slip by without making videos on it...!
I can imagine the dark souls in a summary parodies in this game!
"Hey ogrim, How is isma doing?"
"Still hot..."
So glad you’re still doing lore Vaati. Despite Dark Souls’ age, it still manages to draw so many people back into this world that you’ve expanded on, If only for 20 minutes.
:)
I so much missed your videos. And the voice and everything. Getting ready to enter DS1 for the second time. And also I have an agreement with my friend, that I'm gonna help him get started and familiarize him with the start into the DS world...Yes, I know that it should be a journey of solitude. Yet I just want to get him past the point "I die in five minutes" and "Broken controls". Wish me luck :)
VattiVida we absolutely need a lore video for hollow knight :)
You do lore videos so well and the hollow knight lore is pretty hard to piece together.
Before seeing this, I always felt that the Dark ending of Dark Souls 1 was the most logical ending, since the fading of the fire was meant to be part of the course of nature.
Now that I've watched this video, having learned that Kaathe might not have even meant to corrupt Oolacile and New Londo, but just wanted to learn about the world, I'm starting to think that the Dark ending could actually be the "good" ending, in a sense.
Of course, I use the term "good" pretty loosely. This is _Dark Souls_ we're talking about. But at least the Dark ending seems to have more going for it now.
"They are saught after for their knowledge and understanding of the universe."
Too bad they're HUGE liars.
"He found the Dark Soul." Roll credits.
It was always in me 🧐
@@flappynautintheocean8824 The real Dark Souls were the friends we made along the way.
Hollow Knight music really goes well. Yet again another great video
Man, these new lore videos are so good vaaty, seriously
Funny, I just posted a comment referencing you, ON A HOLLOW KNIGHT VIDEO, and then look at this. One of if not my favorite OST of all time btw.
nice to see a fellow player
the lore is amazing and is so deep i love it
Weird to have HK music over Dark Souls footage. It fit so beautifully. :D
Next:Ludwig Lore 👍
Even in this darkest night... i see... potential for a good lore video
How about a prepare to cry for ludwig??
I appreciate these videos vaati. Dont let anyone tell you that you're just milking the series
Just wanted to say your pronunciation of Jörmungandr was absolutely perfect. Instantly got a like from me.
I love your videos because they help me relate to my brother who loves Dark Souls because I don't understand anything about this game.
and this is really unrelated but i got super excited that I recognized the music you use as background.
Man, I wish Vaati would start doing lore videos on other "Souls-Like" titles, I would love for him to do a series on the new 2D platformer: Blasphemous
I totally agree
Give me that smooth, calming voice!
9:40 I want this in my desktop so badly :(
Using Hollow Knight's music in a Dark Souls video... Two of my favorite IPs in recent memory. Thank you.
Digging the Hollow Knight music :) I’m so glad you’ve found more and more content to squeeze out of this series, Vaati. I love your work and hope to see more in the future!
Primordial means the beginning of time. Time begun when the first flame began - which corrupted dragons, which made serpents. So, no, "Primordial Serpent" is still correct.
nope. tell me where it is stated that there was no time before the first flame. the 4 lord souls are Life, Death, Light, Dark. nothing about time. with primordial they mean that the serpents are there since the beginning.
@@pard2397 Because the passing of time is a form of disparity and disparity didn't exist before the First Flame.
@@blackfyre7900 There is not even a cycle of day and night. The day and night cycle is Age of Light and Age of Dark. Also the serpents are there to represent Ouroboros the neverending cycle of life, death, dark and light. They are there to make sure that ages can begin and end
@@pard2397 There is a day and night cycle. There is quite literally places in the game where it is night, such as the Darkroot Wood and Basin.
Also, show me some evidence that the Lord Souls besides the Dark Souls are specifically to do with light, life, and death. Pull up some evidence. I have a feeling you're the type of person to watch a Vaati video and take it as irrevocable fact.
@@blackfyre7900 if you want evidence watch the intro of dark souls. it´s stated a houndred times that the souls are light (Gwyn the lord of SUNLIGHT), dark (Dark Soul), death (Nito) and Life (witch of izalith).
Next. Nope no day and night cycle. always sunny in anor londo and always dark in new londo and dark root forest.
hmm.. wait a minute the sun in anor londo is fake and if you stop the illusion it´s suddenly dark. wow how could that be?
it´s gettin dark cause the flame is fading and it´s extra dark in places where the abyss is strong. Please look up Ouroborus and take a look again at dark souls. there is a neverending cycle hosted by serpents.
How elucidating. Just as the logic of the world dictated that the light would transition to Dark, my own growing understanding of the Dark Souls lore through your videos has transitioned my trust and loyalty from the Lord of Sunlight to the true order of the world and the Dark Souls of man who were damned by Gwyns usurpation of the world's order. Thank you once again for painting a clearer and clearer picture of the true meaning of the fragments of lore we have access to.
Why is there Hollow Knight music? And also can u make lore vids of Hollow Knight?
I've been replaying ds3 lately. I had an urge to relearn the lore of this series again. Anything regarding the abyss always facinates me. Especially kaathe, and his motivations.
Very good video vaati, even this long after it was uploaded.
The hollow knight music in the background just made me want a mossbag and vaati crossover
