Baby's father asked who was "responsible" for Penny and Johnny (Swayze) said he was so of course Baby's father thought that Johnny was the one who got her pregnant and then sent her to a back alley abortion doctor so his disdain was quite justified until he learned the truth.
Yeah, I was a little surprised that he responded with such venom towards him when Patrick said he was ‘responsible’ for Penny. What else was he supposed to think?
@30:41 "Did she lie to him?" Yeah, he asked her flat out when asking for the money "it's not illegal is it?" and she said "No, Daddy!" Abortions were illegal when this movie took place. That's why Penny had to get one from some scammy butcher passing through town.
She tricked her Daddy into paying for an abortion. Clearly something that he'd be morally against and he could also have been criminally liable. He was still kind to Penny despite that.
I knew you were going to love this one! I love that you mentioned the relationship between Penny and Baby. It’s one of the many things I love about this movie. They became friends for life and there was zero jealousy/competition over a man. I feel like that and Baby calling out her dad’s hypocrisy are two things we rarely get to see in movies anymore.
@lizbuckley7913 I loved him for his love of animals & his commitment to helping them. Even when he was on Celebrity Jeopardy he played for animal welfare groups. God bless him.💙✨️🩵
My daddy made house calls until almost 2000. He also accepted vegetables, eggs, jam, and once a chicken and once a goat. He started practicing medicine after WWII and was a little country doctor. But yeah--they don't make them like that anymore.

Of all the times I have watched this movie, not once has it ever occurred to me what a real one that spot light guy is during the final dance. Jennifer Grey is the daughter of the legendary Broadway musical theatre actor Joel Grey. He played the Emcee in the original stage musical and then the movie version of Cabaret. At the end of Dirty Dancing Baby’s mom says “I think she gets it from me.” The mother is played by Kelly Bishop who starred in the long running Broadway musical “A Chorus Line” as the original Sheila Bryant. The musical is about dancers, who are hungry for work, at an audition.
I got to see Joel Grey on stage when I was much younger, probably in middle school. We have a local theater where I live, and most of our school got to go as a field trip. That was in the 80’s? Most people around me didn’t care, but I always thought it was a big deal!

Catkills resorts were, and still are popular for many middle and upper middle-class families, especially in the 1950's and 1960's. It was also an alternative for some groups who were not allowed in exclusive country club resorts due to racial and ethnic bias.
Yes Patrick Swayze was a trained dancer, he took lessons at first in his mom dance studio in Houston; his mom Patsy was the choreographer in the movie Urban Cowboy, were she had to teach John Travolta how to dance the two step and that movie was also filmed in their hometown, Houston, Texas.
