We always heard Dirty Dancing was good, but we assumed it would be good in a cheesy way. We were wrong and we're so happy to finally do this movie reaction and commentary for it! Hope you enjoy!

Everyone is always talking about "No one puts Baby in a corner", but the quote we always use in our family is "I carried a watermelon".
I feel that the awkwardness of that line represents me really well.

Good one! In our house, it was "the catch of the county."
During the scene where Johnny and Baby are flirting in the practice room, in which the Neil comes in to tell Johnny that he wants to change the final dance of the season, Johnny is heard saying that he has been working with the staff kids on a new dance that mixes Cuban step, and then demonstrates the dance step you see in the final dance sequence in which they whole staff is dancing down the aisle, before being shot down and told to do the Pachanga instead of the Mambo. That is why they were all coordinated.

If I'm remembering correctly, that scene in the dance studio was improvised and they didn't know it was going to be put into the movie. They were just messing around but the director liked it.

This was a Jewish resort. It was located in the Catskill mountains, in upstate New York. This was at a time (the tail end of the time) when Jews often weren’t allowed in many resorts & hotels, so they made a bunch along the east coast. It was called the ‘Borscht Belt’ by the musicians & comedians that played the circuit. There was another similar system for African Americans, called the ‘Chiltlin Circuit.’

S P I haven’t seen the show yet, but from the trailers I’ve seen I could see the Borscht Belt totally being a thing on it. Lots of famous comedians & musicians from the 1st half of the 20th century got their start playing the Jewish circuit. At the time comedians & vaudevillian performers were very popular.
@@susanmaggiora4800 I checked the episode list after I commented, and one of them is literally called 'we're going to the catskills', so it looks like it's the same thing.
Due to the type of dancing, the choreographer had 3 professional “dance couples” and then a bunch of locals. They had a hard rule that none of the amateur couples were allowed to date each other until 6 weeks after shooting began, to avoid dealing with any drama. A week into rehearsals 2 guys were apparently like “so...how serious were you about that ‘no dating’ thing?” 😂

Fun fact: the “oh lover boy” scene was just the actors warming up before a take. They decided to put it in the movie.
Also, the laughing during the learning to dance montage wasn’t planned either. Grey was actually ticklish, and Swayze was actually frustrated.
FYI swazey's mother was a balet dance teacher,so he learned balet and ballroom dancing as a child.
Patrick Swayze had an uncanny ability as Johnny Castle to never make the audience feel like he’s taking advantage of Baby. It’s a tightrope performance and it’s a perfect. When he crooks his finger at her to dance, it never feels creepy or predatory. It’s exciting but still safe. We know he likes her but will never be inappropriate with her.

@@themoviebudz1988 you’re welcome. I would only add that while he does call her on her privilege he never makes any comments referring to her age. When she makes a move on him, and he’s into it, he respects her adultness to even make a move. Baby makes her intentions clear, and he treats her like an adult in a very adult situation. There’s no discussion of virginity, thank god.
Is Baby 18 in this film? I know Johnny’s a bit older but she’s technically an adult so I never get when people say their age gap is creepy.
@@sarahxo2317 It's mentioned early on in the film at that first dinner that she's starting college at Mount Holyoke in the fall, so I always assumed she was 18 since she'd already be a high school graduate. I think there's so much going on in the film, people tend to skim over that bit and because her dad treats her like a child, they wrongly assume she's still a minor. I could be wrong, but that's just my impression when I see those comments about Johnny being creepy.

Very much agreed. Its a shame that "Whatever 2 or more consenting adults do in the bedroom is noone elses buisness" is still a statement that needs to be made in 2021 to some people. And if you sleep with 1000 people thats still fine. You do you.
Trivia: $250 in 1963 is equivalent to $2,100 now. So Baby wasn't asking her dad for chump change. And he gave it to her, totally trusting that she really needed it (which she did).
Also, the dad (Jerry Orbach) is the voice of Lumiere the candlestick in Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast. He's the voice you hear singing "Be Our Guest."

Lisa didn’t say you’re pretty in your own way, she said you’re prettier your own way when she offered to do Baby’s hair and Baby said she’d just leave it the way it was. She was saying Baby is pretty the way she is and doesn’t need to change. I’ve always loved this scene, especially as an older sister.

I was hoping someone else pointed this out. Otherwise, I'd have done it.
It's a minuscule detail, but I love that Baby's example for a relationship is a man who loves and respects his wife, and loves his daughters and the family he has in a time where the jokes were all about husbands hating their wives (which we see earlier as well with the comic's joke about finding a woman exactly like his mother). It puts her already in a place where she can see and understand what a healthy relationship is and I think it actually helps with the development of her relationship with Johnny

So for the last dance scene, when the creepy grandson was bullying Johnny, Johnny was telling him about how he’d been working on something with the dance kids. And the creepy guy cut him off. So they actually had been practicing it. Haha seems less corny when you catch that little bit but i’ve seen this movie a thousand times. It’s fabulous.

Swayze was actually told he shouldn't have jumped off the stage during the last scene because of previous complications with his leg and knees but he did it anyway. Such a bad ass!

he injured himself pretty bad on the 2nd to last jump he did so the final one he did (the one they used) hurt him BAD.
The jump wasn’t even what he talked about in his autobiography, but he said the scene where they practiced balance for the lift on that log above the river was much worse for his knee, since balancing involves so many tiny movements and due to the many surgeries he had on that knee after completely smashing it up twice when he was young, it was just bone grinding on bone. He went to the hospital right after to have it drained. Which was something he actually did very often, also when shooting Point Break. He was so determined to not let an injury like that slow him down, his level of dedication he always had for everything he did was just insane.
As a 27yr old woman who has been dancing since she was 4 I can confirm when traumatic events happen, dancing either alone or with someone you love can be the most centering, and therapeutic thing you can do ♥️

@@themoviebudz1988 I’m pretty sure he’s still in school. That’s why the manager mentioned it. He was in an appropriate school so he is above Johnny in the hierarchy and considered suitable to converse with guests, and flirt with their daughters. There is a big class struggle in this movie.
Can I just say that the abortion scene is why Roe v. Wade is so important. Women shouldn’t almost die because of this.

It's not even a BABY at that stage. If you want to call it fetus, that's fine.
Also that woman doesn't just want to murder a FETUS because 'omg, that would be so much fun to do, lol', but because if ANYBODY even finds out she's pregnant she'll get FIRED and who knows if she'll even be able to get another job while pregnant and expecting and even after giving birth, for a few months afterwards, while she has her hands full of taking care of a newborn without ANYONE'S HELP!
WTF are her AND the baby going to eat, not even mentioning how is she going to afford to pay for her living situation, rent, bills and clothes and other necessities for her baby.
It's mind-boggling to me and a lot of women HOW can other men and women not understand the simple concept of refusing to carry a baby to term if you won't be able to afford to FEED him or CLOTHE him and in a lot of situation not being able to FEED and CLOTHE yourself, plus bills on top of that unless you're planting on giving birth and raising your baby in a makeshift shack in the woods that you built yourself and that has no electricity or running water or heating.
It also comes as no surprise that the kind of people that tend to make these arguments are either trolls or people that are, at the very least, well-to-do enough that in the eventually of 'accidentally' getting knocked up, all they have to do is relax, plan a baby shower and have others around them fuss over their comfort and well being. Without any monetary concerns since those don't exist in that world. One can just chillax and wait for their fetus to develop and evolve.
Wouldn't I want to live in that fairytale world some priviledged people do!
@@LB-uo7xy I feel for any woman that feels she has to make that decision. the babies DNA makeup is created at the point of conception. a human being with their own DNA makeup is being killed. most women don't even know they are pregnant until about 6 weeks in. a heart beat can be detected at around 4 weeks. so a heart beat is actively being stopped. I'm sorry to break it to you. it's a person. also, so if you're going to be poor you'd rather off be dead? what a sad way to think. look, I'm just looking at the science. but if you want to get into people not being ready to have kids, we can. my mom had me when she was 17. she was kicked out of her moms house because of it. she moved in with my abusive father. when I was born she jumped from friends house to friends house. I didn't have my own bed until I was 8 years old and even then it was a cot. I went to 6 different elementary schools. I joined the military when I turned 19. got married at 25 and had my first child when I was 28 and am currently pregnant with my second. my mom is your literal poster child and she did it. she was underage, came from poor mexican immigrant parents, had nowhere to live, had no job, had an abusive baby daddy that never in all my 18 years paid child support. she always says I saved her life. by the sound of it, she saved my life. but idk maybe she should have just killed me, I mean, we were poor.......

I agree, that its a big decision to make and that women shoulndt do it in rush or be pressured about it. I think your mom made the right decision and that you have your place in the world.
But I think, every women should be allowed to do this. Make a own decision. The biological process of pregnancy means, that there is a baby in our womb, which takes everything, what it needs, from u, the mother.Thats one of the reasons, why humans are so far developed, because we ensure the perfect upbringing possible.
But I think, women shouldnt be dictatored by the biology and be able to decide, if they want to share their body or not.
Moreover I think, its good, that a new life starts with a decision.

The scene where Jonny drags his finger down baby’s arm and she laughs is not scripted, she was just really ticklish and they had to do it several times so they just put several of the takes in the movie

Swayze was a dancer before this, one of the main reasons he didn't want to do this movie in the first place. I recommend watching (not neccesarily reacting to it, just something for yourselves) Netflix's Movies That Made Us episode for this. Definitely gave me more respect for this movie.

When you commented on the scene when they dance on the log and potentially getting injured, Jennifer Grey had a stunt double for this (and other scenes just incase) but PS just went ahead and did it and actually hurt himself. He had also wreaked his knee prior to this movie which is one of the reasons he wasn't particularly interested in doing a dance movie. It's an interesting watch. They also have behind the scenes of Die Hard, Home Alone, and some others.

well the whole baby and calling her francis in the middle of the movie is about how she was so naive kinda like the baby of the family in the beginning but she is maturing as a woman exeriencing her sexuality through her relationship and dancing and also as a character getting to know the world around her, and grows into the name

The woman who wrote it used her life experiences, and her nickname was Baby.
Part of the reason the dad is so mad is because back then, abortion hadn’t been legalized yet. So she had lied to him when she said the money wasn’t for anything illegal

The weather when they were filming in Georgia was scorching hot, that’s why they were half dressed most of the time during the practice scenes.

This movie is a fantasy of a young lady's summer relationship with a "bad boy" that her parents approve. The great thing about it is that it dared to tackle subjects like premarital sex and abortion in a compassionate way. On top of that it also tried to teach a lesson about prejudices a generational divides.
Now we need a Ghost reaction to appreciate the full Swayze experience ☺️

Honestly, I appreciate the organic commentary way more than if you two were just trying to make jokes for the sake of it. This channel is one of my absolute favourites because you're not afraid to speak your mind about problematic aspects of what you watch and you do it while still being funny and respectful. I don't think I've seen you lot trash a movie just because you could-- you always seem to find a little nugget of it to appreciate. And I appreciate that.
After that, a suggestion:
I always put off watching this film because I heard some people say that the only good thing was the final dance, but last year Leena Norms put out a video talking about why it is one of her favourites, why it is a radical movie that people don't make anything quite like anymore. I was sold and watched it the next day. If you're into video essays or just knowing movie trivia, I definitely recommend her video. Just look up 'dirty dancing leena' and it should be the first thing that pops up.

I really love their channel, not only they use more than one or two movies into their analysis, but also the period spans more decades, they do not limit themselves to Hollywood productions, and all in all I just think of them as friendly critics with whom I can sorta check my own ideas and thoughts about movies.

Quick comment about Patrick Swayze:
You were right in that he knew how to dance before this movie. His dream was never to become an actor, he wanted to become a professional ballet dancer and that was what he was studying for. However, during sports practice, he got a knee injury that prevented him from living out that dream. So he made a new dream: To become an actor. Actually, Patrick Swayze was a much better dancer than the character Johnny Castle so he always had to tone it down. (Trivia: He asked Ortega, the choreographer, if he could have just one moment that would challenge him. And that's where you get the triple spin off the stage at the final dance. Doing that scene over and over busted his knee injury again, which led to him having huge amounts of pain and going to the hospital to have his knee drain).
I think the dancing at the end was also proof for the Dad that he wasn’t just spending all that time trying to get in her pants, they were really bonding and learning how to dance together 😊 the proof was in the pudding so to speak 😊
Patricks mother owned a ballet studio growing up, he learned all sorts of dance. For this movie he almost didn’t take the role because he was trying to get away from dancing and do more serious acting 🤣

I think one reason why this movie is so well rounded with believable women's character arcs is because it was made by women. Written, produced, cast, - two women were in charge of every aspect of this movie and it shows. For a detailed look at the making of the movie Netflix has a show called the movies that made us and dirty dancing is one of the movies they talk about (along with ghostbusters and die hard) and it's seriously fascinating. Check it out if you have an hour to kill.
Seeing how well this holds up almost 40 years later is a testiment to women in film and it's too bad that studios still don't think women can make movies that will be enjoyed by all audiences.

22:20 the dad was upset because abortions were illegal at this time. He could lose his own medical license for stepping in that situation. It was made in the 80s but based in the 50s/60s
It's interesting that studio exec's takeaway from this was "ok, people love this because of the dancing, let's flood them with dancing movies", when it was always the combination of the fantastic characters, the solid story, and the dancing. Dancing movies are still shit if the story isn't solid.
Yes to this comment. It’s like the first Step Up was great because it had a good story and had character development but the rest of the series got worse cause it focused mostly on the dancing.

Can’t believe we got a movie in the 80’s that subtly addressed class struggle, women’s healthcare, performative activism, elitism in academia, and still manages to have some great dancing! My absolute favorite, and your guys’ commentary was hilarious. Thx!
You're right this movie is definitly a lot more serious than you'd expect. I watched it the first time expecting a light hearted rom-com😂 Still a classic though and I wouldn't mind to see you guys react to some more serious movies in the future

In an interview, Jennifer says that when her daughter saw one of her movies (can't remember if it was this or Bueller) she commented on how beautiful her mum looked back then.
When I was a kid, I was so obsessed with this movie (like I used to watch it at least once a day) so my mom threw the videotape away. I was so mad with her, but now I kinda get it. It was almost unhealthy how much I loved it 😂😂

The actor playing her father is Jerry Orbach, most well-known for decades of acting on Law and Order he reminded everyone that he started with YEARS on Broadway when he sang and performed the role of Lumiere in Disney's Animated Beauty and the Beast! Both actors playing the parents are Tony winners - Kelly Bishop won a Tony as part of the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line before going on to play Emily on Gilmore Girls :). So both are mega trained dancers themselves.

I love, that the characters in this movie are so human. Like Baby is allowed to act frustrated, insecure, stressed and overwhelmed. She gets antagonistic at Johhny during the lessons and he gets annoyed, but it's okay, because real people are like that, even when they are passionate about something, it doesn't mean you just bare through all the troubles without ever just wanting to never touch it again. Most movies today never show us this struggle. They show the sweat and the effort, but rarely the emotional journey, if they show anything at all and not have the character be perfect within minutes.
as someone who studied and graduated from the movie dirty Dancing, Patrick was a classically trained dancer did he's own stunts he also wrote and sang the song "she's like the wind" another funfact when he did the jump off the stage at the final dance he told directors "you have to get this shot i might not come back from this" he did that move when they yelled "Cutt" Patrick was carried out on a stretcher because he's knees gave out

I read a long time ago that they started off with real issues with each other but they had a big talk and worked it out which ended with both of them crying and putting aside their issues. I think Swayze talked about it in an interview.
From the first time I watched it, the monolog that Baby gives to her dad is something I've always taken with me. When people say to make the world better they 99% of the time mean to make them like us.
“I’m not gonna touch that” about her not finding a man like her dad
“You’re not rich enough to have that in your vocabulary” the words was country club
“Keep your pickle where it belongs”

This was kind of the first “grown up” movie that I was allowed to watch. I saw this movie with my mother and she tried to give me the “bird and bees” talk awkward 😂 still a good movie

They didn’t get along in the previous film they did together. No one knows what caused the bad blood, but they had a talk after both being cast, and were okay together after that. So there was some emotional history between them, but they did get along in this movie.

Just a point. When Johnny tells the dad that he is responsible for Penny, the dad automatically thinks he is responcible for Penny’s situation. He assumes like Baby did that he knocked her up, and he is a fraid that this guys is going to do the same to his own precious daughter. It’s an understandable kne jerk reaction because he doesnt know the full story. It’s pure protective pappa bear energy.

I love what you said about the female gaze. That's exactly what's so delicious about this movie. Not just the camera lingering on Mr Swayze's undeniable charms, but the overall unapologetic tenderness and sensuality flavouring the main characters' interactions is a thing we don't see in the movies very often (at least I don't seem to) which is a shame. Their connection feels real partly because of the intimacy of that camera work. Really enjoyed watching you both being surprised by the various layers of this film and your open hearted approach to what is essentially a love story.
I feel like when the dad said “your not the person I thought you were” he was realizing that she wasn’t a kid anymore which I think her nick name comes from because of how optimistic and innocent she is

The Outsiders is now on the list. Certain films DO NOT age well - Sixteen Candles, I'm looking at you. Daughter and I were HORRIFIED, and I remember loving that film in the 80s.

I hope you're not concerned about "being funny" at all - those types of reactions are awesome, but for movies that really deserve in-depth commentary/analysis like this, this was so refreshing to see! A lot of reactors just ask stupid questions (and I get that questions are fine, but they just don't pay attention to the movie and then ask questions that were answered already) because they are too focused on being funny. I love that you actually pay attention, talk about what's happening and why, and ya'll are WOKE!

Netflix has a fun show called the movies that made us. It features Dirty Dancing and the story of how it came into being is REALLY interesting. It was an unexpected success

My mom showed me this movie for the first time when I was three cause she knew I'd love the dancing (I didn't really understand all the deeper parts until later on though of course). We both adore Patrick Swayze and were so sad when he passed. Flash forward to October 2019 my mom was diagnosed with the same type and stage of cancer that he had, so watching now is a little bittersweet with all the memories we have of watching it together. But it will always be in my top three favorite movies.
I hear you, Shelby, it would be very bittersweet with the way things have gone. I hope that maybe watching this movie in the future will still bring you that old joy tho.

They had trouble finding sponsors because of the abortion storyline and wanted to cut it. But Eleanor Bergstein, the writer, refused to cut it.

This movie was made in the 80s, but it is set in the 60s. Abortion was illegal. That is why the Dad is mad at Baby. He gave her $250 and asked her if she was using it for something illegal. Baby lied and said No.
i absolutely adore this movie, i adore the believable chemistry between the two main characters and i love that this isn't just a cheesy romantic comedy. I remember my mum had me watch it several years ago and i can't remember paying much attention to it, i was a young teenager so i guess i convinced myself this was just another cringey Rom com but when not long before i left for university almost 3 years ago now, i decided to watch it again and i adored it. I was so happy to see someone react it as i didn't expect to find many.

The coordinated dancers makes sense if you guys listened when Neil was telling Johnny about dancing changes. Johnny said he has been working with the staff kids on this new dancing and Neil immediately shut him down but he still said it so it makes sense they were ready
Johnny mentioned to creepy face that he was working on a routine with the other dancers so that's how they had the moves down at the end.

I've never seen DD before and I'm 41, I had no intention of watching it either. So it's a credit to this channel that I watched this. Good stuff as always, y'all never fail on the humour and thoughtful commentary.
This was such a great reaction. I’m so glad that you guys gave this a fair shot because it’s actually a really well done film. Music, story and characters are top notch and I feel like people hear the title and are put off. But, it works in the context of the film.

The Dad is Jerry Orbach who we know fr. "Law & Order" (original) & the mom is Kelly bishop fr. "Gilmore Girls" ... Both started out and continue to do Broadway.. Jerry was in "The Fantastics" & "Chicago" AND Kelly Bishop was in the original production of "A Chorus Line"

Johnny said he and the staff were working on the final dance when Neil told him to do the Pachanga instead. So at the end of the movie, that was the dance the staff had already practiced. There was no memo sent out!

I love the novel of The Outsiders so much that I have never ever seen the movie.
Wow, I love this reaction. And one thing I really appreciate is that you guys included some of the deeper and emotional moments, not just the sexy or entertaining ones. I love the depiction of Baby's relationship with her father. She started off idolizing him, was able to see a more complex side of him, learned to be her own person outside of his approval, and also saw her father willing to admit he was wrong. A lot of teens don't get to see that side.
Leena Norms (another TH-camr) did a really great breakdown of why Dirty Dancing was actually a really important part of the culture including it's portrayal of abortion, which was done is a much more nuanced way. Really interesting learning about how studios had to or chose to change their portrayal to a more judgmental focus based on advertising.
And yes, Patrick (and his wife Lisa Niemi) were highly trained dancers before he went into acting.
Great job guys. This was my first reaction of yours but i'll definitely be checking out more.
