So glad you loved this. The scene where the black lady throws a burner to Ellen Sue causing her shake out her hand was Penny Marshall's nod to the Negro Leagues and the fact that the color barrier prevented a lot of potential talent from being displayed to the masses.
This wouldn't change until after the war, when Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, under horrible and dangerous conditions. He was a true hero, and his wife, Rachel, equally courageous. Branch Rickey, general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, had been wanting to break the color barrier for many years, and he and Robinson formed a formidable partnership.
THAT scene still brings a tear to my eye. You expressed perfectly but how many wonderfully talented women the Negro Leagues and definitely not given the same attention OR opportunities. MANY I'm sure we're even better than the women in this team BUT we never allowed to do an open try out to actually find out on an open playing field. It was so incredibly sad that during that time, even though collectively women didn't have the same rights as men. THAT we were still being geared to be pitted in our mentality against by our races. #NYGenXBIKERLady #Taino #Mohawk
SO much of his line work was improvised. My favorite that they could've easily just kept as a blooper was when the cow moos in the background and he says, "will you shut up?!". 😂
All of the older ladies (with the exception of the ones playing the older Kit and Dottie) were all actual former players of the AAGPBL. So all of those scenes where they're playing at Doubleday Field and at the National Baseball Hall of Fame museum were real former players. I love that Penny Marshall included them into the film.
Some of the older women who had lines in the film were actually actresses and not really AAGPBL players. But most of the women we see playing were indeed actual players!
Fun fact: the older ladies, who were playing baseball in the beginning and end of the movie… Those were the real life AAGPBL players. They really do still got it!!! Or… At least they did 30 years ago when this movie came out. RIP to the greatest generation. There are so many great touches to this movie. It’s definitely one of my absolute favorites! 💙💙💙
A classic. When my kids were growing up I used to tell them “There’s no crying in (insert whatever game they were losing)” 😂 I still say it but I don’t think anyone really knows why.
I relate to Marla! My sisters and I had a portrait done for our parents 25th anniversary. It was fine. The photography studio asked to use a copy in their advertisements, which my sisters agreed to (I was a minor). However, they didn’t tell anyone that they were gonna edit me out the portrait. We found out about it when we saw it on a billboard on the highway. When my parents demanded to know why, the photographer said, "that one has a face for radio." My dad slashed his tires and the cops were too "busy" to investigate.
Madonna's This Used to Be My Playground is one of the most touching, deep and beautiful ballads. She did a great job here. Her song, Tom Hanks and Geena Davis's acting works should have been nominated for the Oscar
Betty Spaghetti (who got the telegram about her husband dying in action) was played by Penny Marshall’s daughter, Tracy Reiner. The telegram scene gets me every time. 😢
Well, that’s actually really selfish to the rest of her teammates who she abandoned during the World Series just to show up and blow the game. I always thought it was legit and Kit really won.
@@83gemm If she hadn’t played, they wouldn’t have had the lead in the game (it was her hit that put them in front in the first place). So, whether she dropped the ball on purpose or not… the outcome would likely have remained the same. If she never came back, they wouldn’t have needed to bat in the bottom of the inning (they would have already won).
Dottie absolutely did not drop the ball on purpose. There is nothing about Dottie's character or behaviour up to that moment that would lead one to conclude that. It also makes for a TERRIBLE ending -- Kit is a phony and Dottie is a liar who betrayed ALL of her teammates. It's honestly ridiculous that people think for a second Dottie would be happy for Kit if she LET her win. Dottie is proud of Kit because she EARNED it. Kit won fair and square.
23:35 - Jackie Robinson didn't break the baseball color barrier until 1947. So, this would have been a few years before that. The woman playing that part, DeLisa Chinn-Tyler, was a softball player. According to Wikipeida: "Chinn-Tyler, then 31, was cast in the 1992 movie A League of Their Own, which was filmed primarily in Evansville, Indiana after she answered an open casting call advertised in the local paper. At the tryouts she was told there were no parts for Black women due to the fact that at the time the film was set the sport was not integrated, but director Penny Marshall was at the tryouts that day, saw Chinn-Tyler play, and decided to write her into the film."
15:09 “Garbo” is a reference to actress Greta Garbo, who began her career in her home country of Sweden in the silent film era and soon made her way to the United States, where she became a huge star. Many people considered her one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her popularity continued once films added sound (unlike that of many other silent film stars), and she enjoyed popularity in the 1930s. By the 1940s, when this film mostly takes place, she became more reclusive and appeared in fewer films, and her popularity began to wane, but she was still very much a celebrity with a household name. One of her films that I think you would like is the 1939 comedy NINOTCHKA, which was also one of her most popular movies.
Honestly I think this may be your absolute best reaction yet!! You laughed so hard and it was so much fun to see how much you enjoyed this movie and you understood the historical significance. Totally magnificent! Thank you!!

This is arguably one of the best 20 best movies ever made. This movie makes me tear up every time I watch it. Penny Marshal AKA Lavern definitely hit a home run with this movie. She also put her dad in it plus two actors from her old show "Lavern and Shirly" side note RIP Cindy Williams AKA Shirley. Great movie great reaction.
There was a reunion several years ago and the girl with the huge bruise was there. They asked if that was real or just makeup. She said it was very much real, and to that day she still has scars on her thigh from that.

Glad to know that you really enjoyed this, JL! It’s been a favorite of millions of people (including myself) since it came out in 1992. It’s a fictional story and all of the characters are fictional but it’s based in truth (the Rockford Peaches were a real team, winning 4 championships in their lifetime). “Walter Harvey,” played by Garry Marshall (director Penny Marshall’s older brother and a successful writer-director himself, both in television and movies), was in real life chewing gum magnate and Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley. The league lasted from 1943 to 1954, expanding in 1944 to 8 teams, and at one point encompassing 10 teams, all in the Midwest, before it began shrinking in the early Fifties, ultimately disbanding in 1954. The team did not play in the 1943 league championship, as depicted in the film. In real life, the Racine Belles faced the Kenosha Comets in 1943; the Peaches won their first title in 1945.
I enjoyed your enjoyment of this. The screenwriters were a couple of experienced sceenwriters, real pros, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. I forget about Oscars, but the movie was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress - the TRUE highest honor for movies (and it got there pretty quickly, 20 years after release).
The guy dancing wirh Madonna at the Suds Bucket was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. Kit (Lori Petty) has a Cult following as the title character in the movie Tank Girl.
I was 7 years old when this came out and my family and I always quoted it lol Madonna's song at the end "This Used To Be My Playground" is so beautiful.
I was 18 and watched this in the theatre 3 times and was absolutely in love with it. From a young woman's perspective, watching these women break conventions in a still very traditional and patriarchal time period...and capture the imaginations and admiration because they were great ballplayers....was so inspiring to my 18 year old self. Also, Dottie is the older sister everyone hopes for. Also, she is just so strikingly gorgeous. Also, Dottie repeatedly shows her iron clutch with a ball. She dropped it on purpose because family trumps everything. I LOVE how much you enjoyed this. The Prime series of the same name is quite enjoyable too. They have some strong black women in it and their struggles in trying to play ball & also in the general time period. 💛⚾️
There's no crying in baseball is something that I have been saying to my sister for years ever since I saw this movie and now I say it to my nieces when they start crying over stuff.. 🤣 My sister and I used to fight like that I am 8 years older but now we are the best of friends. This is my favorite movie.
I absolutely love this movie, and there’s so many great scenes but my favorite is probably Dottie meeting adult Stillwell. It’s so brief, but you get the impression that that obnoxious little boy grew up to be a good man who adored his mother. The actor did such a great job, and that little shot of him staring at the standee of his mom, and taking a photo with it and then turning back to look at her just kills me.
My grandma was a professional softball player and was inducted into her towns sports hall of fame. My mom always loved this movie because it reminded her of her mom. 🥲
This is one of my all time favorite movies. Rosie’s character, Doris, was not scouted by the same man, but she is “traditionally” more attractive than Marla. However, Doris, Kit, and Marla are not up to beauty standards of that era in general unlike May and Dottie. With today’s rules it wouldn’t have mattered that Dottie dropped the ball because Kit wouldn’t be allowed to rush her like that. She got tapped by the ball and that would’ve been it. Please react to “Frequency”, “Bicentennial Man”, “Powder”, “Michael,” “Phenomenon”, and “Meet Joe Black”.
Had to laugh when you referred to Tom Hanks' chatracter as a beast. Hanks' character was based on baseball Hall Of Famer Jimmie Foxx, who had the nickname of "The Beast"
Great reaction. Betty, the lady who became a widow, is the same person who asked Jimmy to sign the baseball card. The actress is the director Penny Marshall’s daughter.
1. Tom Hanks can play a disagreeable character after all. He's the GOAT. 2.Lori Petty/Kit could get it. 😍😋 3. Debra Winger was originally going to star in the film but backed out when Madonna was signed. 4. The death notice delivery guy was all levels of wrong.🥵 5. Luckiest kid in the world because I'm not there to kill him. 6. I suspect Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, so Kit could have her time to shine. 7. Thank you Penny Marshall
This reaction might have some of your best laughs of all time. When Marla is "singing" and the lady looking for her new red hat. I was laughing with you so hard.
Definitely in my top five favorite movies. Maybe it's because I'm the oldest sister, but I loved Kit. She tried so hard and she wanted it more than Dottie. Because in the end, Dottie did love baseball, but she loved her sister more. I feel her. And Tom Hanks was stellar in this; so funny, so animated! Nearly every single line in this movie was a gem; SUCH great writing!
Dude, I forgot how good this movie is. And your reaction is just the cherry on top of it. Great reaction that kept me laughing and engaged with it. Loved all of this! Thanks for sharing with us!

There are few other baseball movies that where a lot of fun, Major League 1 & 2, Rookie of the Year, The Rookie, Little Big League, the Sandlot (first one), The Scout and for love of the Game.
Great Reaction to this Awesome Classic....... I LUV how well this movie was made from Directer Penny Marshall, to Performances of the Actors/Actresses....... BTW..... Early in her Career Madonna was a head turner...... She even had a Pictorial in Playboy in 1985.......
You might like "forever young" with Mel Gibson. It's another great movie focusd around WW2 to present. And of course Gena dropped that ball on purpose.
This makes me think of my cousin. We lived together for a couple of years and we would always watch this movie when it was on cable. He passed away a few years ago because of covid. It brings happy tears thinking about us laughing at this movie.
I grew up in Rockford so, even though I was never a baseball fan, I always knew of the Peaches. I drove by their field, which was never taken down, many times. They are now building a hall of fame for the women at that spot and I believe renovating the field as well.
It was so heartwarming to see you enjoy this movie so much! I've loved this movie since I first saw it in the theatre. I liked how director Penny Marshall gave parts to her brother, Gary Marshall, a great director and comedic actor himself, and David Lander, her co-star from Laverne and Shirley (he was Squiggy). And by watching along with you I was reminded how great Jon Lovitz was in this film; I wish his character had remained in the film, but I guess that "pickle tickle" he gave the wife turned into a whole thing by itself. Thanks for another fantastic reaction! And belated congratulations on your one year anniversary! Hoping for many, many more to come!
The Murder Whistle does make a good point...how the hell did Rosie O'D get in the league, with her looks? For 30 years that one has sailed by me without a 2nd thought lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Be sure to give my favorite Field Of Dreams a watch at some point if you haven't seen that, (sorry, new to the channel, don't know). That song at the end here, This Used To Be My Playground, has NEVER failed to make me cry. Of course, I usually come primed, as I usually already have the tears rolling by the time we get to it anyway, so....
This is one of my favorite movies, dude! Now you gotta check out the League of their Own series on Prime that just came out last year. Its a great reboot.
Great movie. Perfect cast Perfect music score. "There's no crying in baseball!" Agree she dropped the ball on purpose. Family was more important to her than winning. Sweet and sentimental. It can bring a lump to your throat. Once again, a great review.
[Edited: Added info about the red hat scene] If you want to see prime early Madonna, you should definitely check out Desperately Seeking Susan with a very young Patricia Arquette. PS. I just remembered - Mae took the red hat her teammate was looking for in the "piss on your hat...that was uncalled for" scene. Recall it? Doris asked her where she got the dress and Mae said she"borrowed it." Apparently, she also"borrowed" that red hat, too. Mae was a trip

“Avoid the clap, Jimmy Dugan!” The clap is what they used to call the STD gonorrhea lol. And that IS good advice!!
The highest grossing baseball movie ever made.
“Do you think there’s men in America that haven’t seen your breasts?” I really want to think that was Rosie add libbing!
"Hey, Madonna somethin' nasty ain't she?" 😂 You're not the first or the last to say that about my Queen. 🤣
To paraphrase a different Tom Hanks movie: Nasty is as nasty does :)
Ya didn’t expect to cry did ya??! Love this movie, great reaction!
This going you cry and smile at the same time.
Omg your puppers! Fell in love instantly! ❤ Will be following! Please give doggo updates! ❤
3. Debra Winger was originally going to star in the film but backed out when Madonna was signed.
4. The death notice delivery guy was all levels of wrong.🥵
5. Luckiest kid in the world because I'm not there to kill him.
6. I suspect Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, so Kit could have her time to shine.
7. Thank you Penny Marshall
The kid in the car trying to hit on Dottie was hilarious.
@@gmunden1 I meant that little brat on the bus.
I cannot believe this. I literally just re-watched this movie last week hoping you'd react to it some day. Talk about kismet.
I've seen this movie 1,000 times at least. It STILL breaks me every single time. I can't even watch a reaction of it without weeping all over myself.
75 dollars a week is now 1,304.00 in today time. This is a great movie, it one of those you can watch over and over
Yes brother they were expected to keep playing
Tom Hanks, Jon Lovitz and Penny Marshall? 1988 "Big" movie.
This reaction might have some of your best laughs of all time.
When Marla is "singing" and the lady looking for her new red hat.
I was laughing with you so hard.
You need to watch Tom Hanks in 'Bachelor Party'. That's one of his classics.
Gut belly laughs, serious drama, great actors, direction from Penny Marshall..and old Salty...best reaction channel ever! 🤔✌️👍❤️
I never would have thought, out of all the movies, this would be the one that we get to hear so many audible laughs from JL. Soooo much funnn!
Geena Davis is a lovely, tall lady (and an Olympic archer to boot!)
How it should have ended: Old Dottie hugs old Kit and whispers in her ear: “I dropped the ball on purpose.”
Another movie i love from Geena Davis is The Long Kiss Goodnight, I recommend it for your list
Geena Davis and Samuel Jackson chemistry in this movie is next level
@raramonty5217 I forgot to include this movie on patreon when we were able to suggest for next poll 😅 took screenshot for next time 🤞🏾🫂
Dude, I forgot how good this movie is. And your reaction is just the cherry on top of it. Great reaction that kept me laughing and engaged with it. Loved all of this! Thanks for sharing with us!
I absolutely love Madonna in this movie she is such a badass. She really is stunning in this movie.
Have you seen how she looks now?😂
@@charlesdrake3125 Yeah people age.
@Aya A. I'm very aware that people age, that's not what I'm talking about. If you do a search, it will be very evident what I'm referring to.
@@charlesdrake3125 unfortunately yes I have she looks awful the plastic surgery and stuff she tried to do to stay young and relevant is so sad if she would have just let herself age naturally I think she'd be prettier.
@@charlesdrake3125 And? Why do you even care? It doesn't change her HUGE legacy.
I have never seen anyone get that pissed at the ending of the game 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀 I'm dead, man. You are too funny, 😊dude.
Geena Davis…. The very Best movie is THE LAST KISS GOODBYE. She plays a Bad Ass, also starring SAMUEL L. JACKSON, it’s an action movie. Another good one is THELMA and LOUSE I believe it was Brad Pitt first movie appearance 👍. You gotta watch those two GEENA DAVIS movies💙💙💙
You should watch "A Beautiful Mind".
It's kinda like The Usual Suspects when there's a huge plot twist near the end.
“ ohh these dirty Mf’s played this song “ 😂😂😂😂😂 you funny af bro
There are few other baseball movies that where a lot of fun, Major League 1 & 2, Rookie of the Year, The Rookie, Little Big League, the Sandlot (first one), The Scout and for love of the Game.
Great reaction. I KNEW you were gonna say that Dottie threw the game at the end lmao! You’re a great reactor and headed for the stratosphere!!
Love Tom Hanks drunk & hungover in this movie 😂
Great Reaction to this Awesome Classic.......
I LUV how well this movie was made from Directer Penny Marshall, to Performances of the Actors/Actresses.......
BTW..... Early in her Career Madonna was a head turner...... She even had a Pictorial in Playboy in 1985.......
There are only a few films with a scene that makes me cry reliably.
The condolences telegram scene is one of them.
I laughed when you said Dotty was being petty toward Kit, since Kit was played by Lori Petty.
🤣🤣🤣 i agree with the song at the end like nope not crying this time
The Murder Whistle dancing was priceless!
31:52 He said “avoid the clap, Jimmy Dugan” 🤣🤣
The Murder Whistle does make a good point...how the hell did Rosie O'D get in the league, with her looks? For 30 years that one has sailed by me without a 2nd thought lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣
A League Of Their Own was another of my all time favorites. But then, I am a baseball fan, so I always have a soft spot for the baseball films.
I’m glad I’m not the only grown man that gets a little emotional at this movie😂
