    To me a beginner is just someone who hasn't used one yet.
    I used a Monoprice select mini III ever since it came out until about 3 months ago and it died unceremoniously. I am not actually awaiting the shipping of my K1C. Ever since the other printer died I have been researching and watching many videos on different machines and slicer settings and materials. This is going to be a huge step up for me.

    Having the printer can be the gateway to learning those things that the gatekeeper mindset issues as edicts to entry. Downloading things that others have posted leads to "I like this but wish it was different this way" or "nobody has this thing that I'd like to print the way I need it" then leads to learning modeling software to make the thing the way they want it. I feel like a lot of gatekeepy ridiculousness can become an accomplishment when you take a run at it from the opposite direction instead of getting speedbumped by some "expert" and abandoning an interest.

    Printed a 3d model in a library once, have held several 3d prints, but initially I didn't know what to do with it. Looked a bit gimmicky to me and I didn't see a lot of potential for my own use. Now I am getting curious as I am looking more into tinkering with Flipper Zero extensions (WiFi card etc.) and LoRa devices where the only cases for those things are 3D prints. None of it seems commercially available except from "creator stores" and most of them shipping from overseas, incurring import duties and high shipping costs.
    There are no small scale (conusmer level) shops in the vicinity that accept 3D printing jobs and the libraries stopped offering this service, so now I am looking at maybe getting into this myself...

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can't say it's safe, because nothing is truly safe. But on the scale of safe to dangerous, I would say the A1 mini is more towards the safe side. The K1 is probably more low risk simply because it has an enclosure that will keep little fingers away from the moving parts.

    I'm looking for a printer that does good details and overhangs without a problem. Which one can do that?
    I have a neptune 2s and have had a lot of frustration configuring and dealing with warping and stringing.
    I'm thinking of getting a Prusa Mk4 for reliability and details. I'm frustrated with how printers aren't compared on print quality.
    Speed doesn't matter to me if it looks like a stringy mess.

    So, I would consider myself a beginner. I have never owned a 3D printer, but I'm looking at getting one. I have played around a bit in blender and had like two small RC parts printed for me by someone else, based on downloaded models that I possibly made very slight adjustments to, but I know nothing about different filament types, bed heat or height, what size or temp the nozzle should be. I have never used slicing software and I don't know if it is universal or if there is one that works on all 3d printers. I also don't know if I should get a cover or something to regulate the ambient temperature and if things like humidity make a difference. I am also scared of things getting stuck to the bottom, so I have heard of a heated bed but I have no idea if that depends on filament or heat or whatever.
    TL:DR Someone who can put something together with screws, install software and download 3d models.

    You mentioned a preference for using the creality slicer vs. the bambu slicer, and I was hoping you could elaborate a little more about your findings in this regard (perhaps in a future video). I don't wish to be argumentative at all, but I personally had the opposite experience, preferring the bambu slicer over the creality one (I own both a k1 max and p1s+ams). in fact, I liked the bambu slicer so much that I ended up grabbing orca slicer (Which is pretty much just a more open port of bambu slicer) and have standardized on using it for all of my machines (k1 max, p1s+ams, voron v2, and soon a voron 0). I'm just curious about your thoughts on the matter. thanks!

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I prefer using the creality slicer *on the phone* only. On the computer they're both pretty comparable. But on the phone, CrealityCloud is an actual slicer that you can feed any STL to and it works, where as BambuHandy only works with project files uploaded by their users, and you don't get to rearrange or scale or do anything with the files. That's why I prefer CrealityCloud.

    Easy, A1 with AMS, just wait for it. Mini is great, but you'll outgrow it too fast. March is coming soon. Absolute beginner is someone who saw a 3D printer at a friends house and was fascinated. I've seen my wife go from newb to competent in a few weeks who was turned on to it by seeing me do it, and by the level of polish that the Bambu A1 offers. Somehow, she's now running her A1 and my A1 both in her craft room, leaving me with an empty space in my office.

    Able to level the bed manually
    Able to produce a test print to check performance and recognise what the people(s) is/are.
    Able to do 3D CAd design for own models
    Has a purpose for buying the thing in the first place.
    Has limited or no experience of different filaments and their properties
    Has a partner who sees no point in the "new toy" at all, (until they print something that repairs something at zero cost.)

      @bencejoful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Basically, a slicer is a computer program that takes a model (usually a STL file) and tells the printer how to print it one layer (or slice) at a time. There are a lot of settings in the slicer program you can tweak to make sure the model prints successfully, such as supports for parts of a model that need them, how thick the model's walls/floor/ceiling is, infill (how solid and sturdy the interior of a model is), etc. Bambu lab has their own slicer which is derived from Prusa slicer, another common one is called Cura.

      @3dpprofessor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry for the late reply, but lemme answer as much as I can:
      1. This video is a good place for it.
      2. This video offers 3 good options.
      3. PLA. Stick with PLA until you get used to it, then branch off into other stuff, but start with PLA>
      4. A whole fricking rainbow, and then some.
      5. I recommend starting with Tinkercad. It looks like a children's toy but it's robust enough for everyone.
      6. All that's handled by the printer, you don't really need to work with it.
      7. I have no idea what liquid soaking finishing you're seeing, but that's not common. Most prints, especially PLA, work as-is, no finishing necessary.
      8. Yes, only certain printers, like the BambuLabs A1 featured in this video, can do multiple colors in a single print. The vast majority can only do one color, and one color is enough for most people.
      9. You get what you pay for. The 3D printers you're likely to buy on AliExpress are likely cheaply made and will require a lot of effort on your part to get up and running. Chances are you'll use them for a while, maybe have some success, most likely experience some failures, and possibly conclude that 3D printing just isn't for you, whereas if you use one of the printers I suggest you'll likely have a lot more success and are therefore more likely to stick with it.
      I hope that helps.

      @pacificcoastminiatures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For 7) as the Prof didn't answer it fully: the prints you see being soaked in some kind of liquid are printed on resin 3D printers. These use a liquid resin and each layer of the print is exposed to UV light to solidify it. Prints need to be washed to remove any uncured resin and usually the washing liquid is IPA. And the prints then need to be cured for a few minutes under a UV light. The advantage of resin is that it produces more detailed parts, perfect for miniatures or in my case my model railroad.
      If you want to keep it simple, stick with the FDM (that use filament on spools) printers shown in this video where the melted filament cools by itself into layers - the printed parts don't need any washing or curing. They're ready to use after they come off the printer.

    To those that choose to "gateway" 3D printing for others I would suggest that the vast majority of road vehicle owners (a) were not born with the knowledge of how to Drive and (b) cannot service, maintain, repair or modify their vehicles themselves. So why demand that of someone a beginner to 3D printing. That said ...
    A great video today, I loved your logic and reasoning, also the selection of machines although I was surprised at the K1 featuring (until you explained your rationale, in which case YES). I've been at this malarkey for over 9 years and it is easy to forget those first steps (Slic3r anyone?). The whole thing appealed to my mechanical, electrical and electronics leanings. It was a techy Nirvana of new things to learn. Way beyond your own description of a Beginner today. I am thrilled at the new machines, fast, reliable, part of an ecosystem, enabling Creators while still satisfying the techy geeky folk. More to the hobby has got to be a good thing!

      It's a bit different. A car is expensive enough that it is worth taking it to the garage for repairs. But most 3D printers are so cheap that a repair by a specialist is often more expensive than buying a new one.
      It is also not expected that you already know everything when you start with the hobby, but you have to be willing to learn. Unfortunately, many people nowadays approach technology with the expectation that they don't have to learn anything and that everything works automatically. However, 3D printers are nowhere near that point.

      To 3D printers the same should apply as they move ever closer to becoming Appliances. Load up the media, send the file, remove the print. The bar to entry has been lowered with the new machines with ecosystems to work in the background.
      As with Car owners of the early 1900s the technically inclined are no longer going to own the domain of 3D Printing. The door is opening to the Creatives who will be consumers not technicians.
      3D printing becoming less of a Black Art. That is a good and welcome thing.

      For sure, when 3D printing started, it was defiantly in it's model T phase. Functional, but hardly easy to use. And still there were a lot of us that either had the skill and determination to wrestle it into working. But for 3D printing to really grow, it's got to get out of the shop (so to speak) and into an appliance. And it's not there yet, but these machines represent a quantum leap in that direction.

    Absolute beginner to me would be someone who doesn’t have a clue how any of it works. Doesn’t know how to create the digital files they want to build, doesn’t know how to set up the printer itself. Just has an idea in their head of what they want and knows creating it themselves is the only real chance they have of ever seeing it and having it.
    It’s me. I don’t know what I’m doing.

      The question is whether they will release a new printer for it or whether it will be an add-on for the existing printers. The current printers have no mechanism to cut the filament. Therefore, they will probably try to form a tip at the end of the filament similar to what other multi-color systems like the Prusa MMS, the 3D Chameleon or the Enraged Rabbit Feeder already do.

      About toybox needing to catch up in one way or another? It's possible I read that in a comment, but if I did it just lodged itself in my subconscious. But if you've used their printers, and then use any other modern printer, I think anyone would come to the same conclusion.

    I think not thinking about price misses the mark a bit, especially beginners don’t know how much they want to invest at the start of their printing journey. Most people would be pretty happy with an Elegoo Neptune 3/4 or similar.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel different.
      While I agree that the initial investment should be kept low to minimize the loss should they decide that this just isn't for them. But I think "most people", if they get a 3D printer that requires a lot of effort to get up and running, will more likely conclude that 3D printing just isn't for them and quit, so what's the point? What's the point of saving a few bucks if it means nearly everyone isn't going to go with it, where as if you spend a little more you're much more likely to stick with it and make the world a better place.
      I chose these 3D printers because they're the cheapest you can get that are also easy to setup and use. Any cheaper and you're throwing your money away. Yes, you're not throwing away a lot, but why throw away any if you don't need to.

      @@3dpprofessor Starting with such a great machine would be amazing ofc. I bought a Biqu B1 Ender clone first and had many issues, most of them cause I was lazy and clueless. Worked well after the rocky getting to know phase. Recently I bought an Elegoo Neptune 3 Max and it's been a big step up and many successful prints with no issues so far. It's not fast, but that isn't a problem for me. Everybody has different expectations and ideas and I think your video gives some good advice.

    To me, an absolute beginner is someone who has never used a 3D printer before. But that's where the similarities end for me.
    Some people who want to get into 3D just want to print models off the Internet. Then there are those who want to use the 3D printer to bring ideas to life. And then there are those who want to go deeper and learn how the printers work. Strangely enough, I never find anything for the last group in the recommendations for beginners. It's as if no one believes that they exist.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think, for me, the reason I don't cater my beginner recommendations to the tinkerers is because there already is a vast army of recommendations for them. From the beginning of 3D printing, that's who 3D printers were for. The RepRap Mendel wasn't necessarily a printer you'd use as a workhorse.
      However, that scene is still alive in the Voron line of 3D printers, and people are doing amazing things with them.

    Beginner? What's that? 😁A true beginner is someone who wants to build something but has no idea of what 3D entails. Yes, we can visualize in 3D but how to get there from nothing?
    I'm certainly a beginner. I just bought a printer (Flashforge 5M Pro) but haven't even turned it on yet. I do woodworking and use Sketchup to design woodworking, and even carpentry projects, so. I'm reasonably versed in 3D modeling. Indeed woodworking is why I decided to finally get into 3D printing. I'm getting PO'd with equipment manufacturers not agreeing on what 4" means. No two 4" dust ports are the same. Literally. I'm always having to jury-rig pieces to get from here to there. Once I thought of that angle, well tool hangers would be nice. I can easily enough buy this stuff but it's expensive and never quite what I want. I can do better.
    Enter 3D printing. Because I've been doing 3D modeling for ten years, or so, I'm ahead of the game. ...or maybe I'm just delusional. I know that Sketchup isn't ideal as a design system for 3D printers, but where to go next? I haven't a clue. TH-cam, here I come.

    We are not quit there.....Yet. it's like driving, there is a limited skill set involved to be able to get results.
    To go back to driving, a midsized American car CAN get you where you want to go, BUT, it is not going to be terribly fulfilling as your skills/expectations advance.
