Guilford GP9s Blowing Smoke - 1080p - 6/25/11

  • A collection of the most action I've ever seen in one afternoon on Pan Am.
A few things you'll see in this video:
-Two GP9s helping three SD40 varients restart their train, with copious smoke.
-Two sections of MOAY, one sporting rental power and one with a pumpkin.
-A meet between two manifest freights on the bridge west of east deerfield yard.
-A wide variety of semi-uncommon cars (for new england anyway) including lots of gondolas of scrap, recyling, wire, ties, wheels, and water, plus a canadian cylindrical hopper and many coil cars.
-An empty Bow coal train with a standard cab dash-9.
    -A stationary Sperry inspection car.

I could be wrong, but it really looks and sounds like that leading GP9 is the only unit cut in. I would believe it too, I personally had a GP9RM drag 125 loaded tanks uphill in the yard by itself because the previous crew left the trailing unit isolated and forgot to mention it at trade off. They can pull some weight for sure! Awesome video.

    • @NorfKhazad

While it certainly wouldn't be out of character for Pan Am, I can definitely see exhaust coming from the stack of the rear GP9 a couple times. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the units are out of commission though. It's not uncommon for them to put 3 units on a train just to be sure one will still be working when it reaches its destination.

@@kevinporter6426 Hello! Thanks for your question! I am not sure where exactly the term comes from but it basically means that it is not turbo charged. Hey Siri....

@@kevinporter6426 Two-stroke diesels need some kind of forced aspiration to operate, as there is no exhaust or intake strokes to empty and then refill the cylinder with clean air. General Motors two-stroke diesel engines (Detroit, Winton/Cleveland, EMD) use a Roots blower (a lobed air pump) to force pressurized clean air through the cylinder and clear out the exhaust in an instant as the piston reaches bottom dead centre at the end of each power stroke. Turbocharged EMDs have a clutch on the turbo so that it will be kept spinning even when there is very little exhaust pressure coming from the engine (idling or low throttle), turbocharged Detroits have both roots blowers and standalone exhaust-driven turbos.

My friend was an engineer on B&M and I was glad to see this as I modeled some places even from Dole Jct. to Keene on the Ashuelot branch.
I assume these guys are hourly ppaid as they are so slow I had to checked youtube settings as I thought the video was running in 25% speed. My GOD, they must taking this freight to China on a slowboad to China. This was painful to watch and even the death groaning waas terrible. As friends in Newfoundland I have say: SOME SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew! I bet biden was involved in this in some way!!!

It was slow because half the locomotives were shut down and they were terminating in the yard.

These are supposed to be cleaner than steam engines and I think that this pollution is worse gas burning is worse than steam vapors crazy..
