    Subscription-based paywalls for features the car has standard are insanity and people should absolutely not put up with it. They're trying to see if they can get away with it.

    • @AlvinBrinson
      @AlvinBrinson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      They will get away with it because manufacturers are targeting a 3 year lease/trade cycle and that's what a lot of new car buyers expect now. 3 years gives the original buyer the feature for "free" and then the subscription will hit the used car buyer, providing revenue on the second purchase that would never have come to the manufacturer before.

      Its a trend that goes far beyond just cars. I think TV studios and channels are the worst. Selective programming where you're forced to get a subscription to watch their shows. You can quickly go bankrupt collecting subscription to every new network show you want to watch. I'll just wait 5 years for it to come out on Netflix, and keep the one.

      I live in Ohio. My 2009 Toyota Yaris, which I've owned since new, is also in superb condition. There's some minor surface rusting on mechanical components if you crouch down and look underneath the car. But the body of the car itself, including all painted area, have zero rust. Zero! Not even a trace of it in areas that you'd expect to see rust, like the bottoms of doors or on the rockers. Oh, I've only needed to take this car to the mechanic once ever, and it was for brake work. I can't see myself owning anything but Toyotas.

My 2013 VF Sv6 Sportswagon in dark Green Regal Peacock had remote start direct from key fob as a standard feature 9 years ago. It works from up to 100 metres away and transponder even works in concrete basements in shopping centres! Also other things standard like blind spot warning lights in mirrors self park and reverse traffic alert. To this day still have this car with 140k on the clock and still runs and drives like brand new car. Best thing no subscriptions or hack able internet connectivity! Will preserve this car as a piece of Australian Automotive history.

      It has a garbag/budget belt/chain design CVT though. Better drive it like a grandmother & change that transmission fluid every 30K if you expect it to last more than 100-120K miles. Also, some 100% GDI engine designs are designed to prevent carbon buildup even without port injection - Thus, it depends on specific brand/design. It's also worth nothing that the Toyota combo direct & port injection engines have some other issues associated with them, as TNGA (latest-gen) Corolla hatch/sedan owners are already discovering now. My personal (2020 model year) experience is that Toyota these days doesn't design/build them like they used to.

    Toyota says triple clicking the fob to remote start is just an unofficial hack you can use as a workaround or for troubleshooting if you have cellular service issues.
    Toyota says proper way to use remote start is through the app. The key fob still connects to the same internal module that gets disabled when the subscription is inactive. That’s why remote start stops working without a subscription regardless of using the app or the fob.

But the computer that handles remote start in the car, was programmed to always check if the owner is subscribed, regardless of whether the signal to start comes via the internet from the mobile app, or directly from the key fob. which toyota's playing off as an oversight.

    As a former Toyota sales consultant, I fully support lambasting them over poor choices on the subscription services. However I can offer some perspective on why they might be doing this - the standard tech in all Toyotas (TSS) now includes "safety connect" (Toyota OnStar) which became standard in most 2019+ models. They are starting to get a lot of data from their first buyers on those models on whether or not they renew after the trial period. By keeping a more "top of mind" feature like remote start locked behind a paywall they can bring more attention to the "background", potentially life-saving subscription service when people go to renew. If they really wanted to make customers for life though they'd just make safety connect and remote start from your phone standard and non subscription-based. Do it, Toyota! We dare you!
