I have had my Yaris Cross for just over a year. It is nice to drive (better than you might imagine) and frugal on petrol. Cold weather affects the main battery, so restricts fuel consumption, but I have never had below 60 mpg and 70+ is not unusual, even in British summer. Road noise can be a bit intrusive, especially given the appalling state of Britain's roads, but the real bugbear with the car is the 12 volt battery that runs the tech that operates the doors, the alarm, the parking brake, etc and most significant, the ability to start the car. If you take extra long holidays or use the car infrequently, the battery will lose its charge and becomes immobile. You can't even push it because of the electronic parking brake. There is a jump start point in the fuse holder under the bonnet, but my recommendation, if you buy one of these cars (and I believe the same problem occurs with other hybrids and EVs) and use it infrequently, is to buy a solar charger. Amazon, for example, will sell you the AA Solar Charger, which plugs into the EOBD socket, under the dashboard above the brake pedal, for under £30.
I believe you can start your Yaris Cross Hybrid using Toyota mobile app. My bro in law uses the app to start his BYD ev cars while he is away on vacations.
You must not follow the news. Their SUVs and Trucks are a nightmare. They have had to stop production in multiple models to fix engine issues. I would go Mazda over Toyotas Right now.
@@jandolejsi8122 thats the problem with hybrids. I had a toyota aqua hybrid after 11yrs it broke down n the battery is expensive too but hey its still good if ur getting a new one

Man some cars don't have that but atrocious manual knob that you have to rotate to recline your seat This lever seems to be basic but when you don't have it you really miss it

EV mode button is for moving the vehicle short distances like in / out of a garage etc without starting the power unit, Leave the EV button only, stick it in D then just drive it & let the hybrid system do the work.
B isn’t more regenerative braking. It stops disconnecting the ICE when you release the throttle. So you can Brake on the ICE when going downhill, instead of constantly pushing the brakes. Has been for decades on Toyota hybrids.
I've had the hybrid mid-spec for almost 2 years now. Averages 4.1 l/100km on highways, 3.6 around town and less than 3 in the countryside. The boot capacity on mine (hybrid FW drive only is 390 liters). Very comfortable and impressive handling for its class. Cannot recommend it enough!
@@bartek.igielskiyou‘re right, but still the electric motor can lock out the pulleys, meaning it will be more responsive since it doesn‘g rely on centrifugal forces :)
@@mucmac3586 believe it or not, but the official inflation figures are not based entirely off of the price of a Toyota Yaris Cross. Maybe inflation includes other items too.
Blank switch in the boot: semi electric tow coupling? A Passat had the same system to open the fuel tank - I remember there was a button somewhwere between the front seats... By the way: It's a eCVT, not a CVT. The transmission ratio is fixed (planetary gear), different ratios are simulated by power distribution.
I have the 2024 Yaris Cross Excel fully loaded. I previously had a 2020 Yaris 1.0l petrol manual (Awesome car and wish I had not sold it). The Yaris Cross is fantastic for around town and fuel consumption around town and on A-roads is often in excess of 70mpg. On numerous occasions I have had 80mpg and even 90+mpg for journeys of 20 - 25 miles. Motorway driving is always 65mpg +. It is unbelievably cheap to run petrol wise. My Toyota dealer in Croydon is fantastic for servicing. A really slick experience all around. The Excel version has an auto parking feature and surround view. The auto parking is utterly amazing. It feels weird though letting go of the wheel. The Excel also has other safety features when pulling out or reversing out of a driveway that warns you of pedestrians and cars. It really works and is superb. The jury is out on the adaptive cruise control. For me even when setting on maximum distance I always feel it is too close to the car in front at higher speeds on the motorway so I rarely use this feature. Lane assist is good too. You can feel the wheel tugging if you stray without indicating. The visibility out of the back window is limited. I like a car with a lot more glass and thinner pillars personally but the safety features on the car compensate for this limited view (ie blind spot monitoring). This being my first (small) SUV, I personally would go back to the Yaris rather than the Yaris Cross. Slightly narrower and shorter and better suited to driving in Greater London. I also prefer the lower driving position. The boot is a decent size. We use for 2 Brompton bikes and then there is room for a suitcase as well. From a driving perspective it is as easy as it gets. Switch it on, put in drive and drive. The hold feature is brilliant and being a hybrid no changing gear all the time in traffic. It's a fantastic car but on occasions I yearn for my manual. I feel there is a little more connection when you have to use the gears manually. One bug bear is the single USB in the front. It would cost nothing to have multiple USB's. My experience of Toyota's in the last 4 years has been entirely positive. If I had to buy a car for my son who has passed his test, I would plumb for a standard Yaris with some of the extras like all round camera's and parking feature. If you have never had a Toyota or hybrid then give it a go. Just look around you when you are out driving. Every time you see a broken down car, make a note of the brand. Toyota's are everywhere. The car of choice for Uber drivers. They are literally driving all day. You'll hardly ever see a broken down Toyota if ever but you will see plenty of premium German cars waiting for a breakdown truck. I simply would not even look at another manufacturer next time I buy (Perhaps Honda).
as far as owning corolla hybrid, these cars are great for mixture of city driving and driving between towns, where hybrid battery is most active, but if you do lot of motorway driving, stay away from them, lot of noise and hybrid battery is obviously not working for higher speeds.
This is car I got in April 2024 First review I have seen for this year , all other reviews are 2 years old are more. You did leave out the safety features and the Hold brake feature is great at traffic lights, and the petrol range is over 700km with full tank.
true, but i've been helping my daughter move and buy some stuff recently and would have preferred one like this 🙂. They could offer a stuff one as an option.
Would be very interesting to see a Clio Vs Yaris or Capture Vs Yaris Cross comparative Especially regarding the hybrid system which are similar but still have a quite different philosophy
Like with all Toyotas they focus on reliability if the drive train and forget the about everything else as important including interior build quality 😂

DO NOT drive around in B mode in any Toyota Hybrid as Mat was doing in this video. It is only meant as a downhill engine assistance brake. It's not meant to be used for regen. Any complaints with this car come down to its class. You know this is going last a long time compared to a peugeot or vw.
my understanding was that B mode actually increases engine breaking and stops or reduces charging the batteries to prevent them overheating when going down hills or steep inclines
just got one the GR version, this car is great fun to drive, the performance is good enugh, the MPG is crazy, i never get less than 58mpg usually its over 65mpg and on long runs ive had 76mpg and im not a slow driver. id say just go ahead and buy it.
Using B mode in a Toyota will increase your fuel consumption, it is only for use to provide engine braking on a steep descent. It has no effect on regeneration.
Ive just swapped in my 10 year old Auris Hybrid for the YARIS Cross as I wanted slightly higher seating position. I loved the Auris but it did roar a bit when accelerating. I expected the newer Yaris to be quieter but it isnt. Also the roar comes from the back of the car rather than under the bonnet which is taking time to get used to. Its a similar sound to the rasberry noise you get when your exhaust blows. I use ECO mode, EV will only work up to 20 mph then the engine cuts in. Its a lovely ride. Feels like its driving itself, very smooth. Heavily tinted rear windows are dark to see through. Not sure if that was standard tint as I bought it 3 months old and had a previous owner. Its the ICON and delighted it has keyless entry. Reversing camera. Im adding parking sensors . Could see no advantage in paying 2/3k more for Design. Still undecided if I should have got the Corolla for better visability and more interior space.
I've got a load cover like that on my 2021 model Yaris Cross. You don't have to select EV mode as the car goes into electric drive whenever it can. Forget B mode, I've never used it.
For the same reason I'm glad I bought the new CHR. Incredibly driver friendly cars, economical and easy, but also fun to drive. And all of the above at competitive prices!
Was in Japan a few days ago, my parents rented one of these to go from Tokyo to fuji speedway, believe me these back seats are horrible when it comes to long distances and noise insulation doesn’t exsist….other than that it was pretty blumming good
I got adaptive cruise control in my much maligned 2018 Suzuki Swift Sport and it works really well. Also got automatic led lights and daytime lights and most but not all of the other safety measures. Cost here in the southern hemisphere was a bit under £15,000.
This car reminds me of a slice of white bread in an all you can eat breakfast buffet. So many options and yet you choose a slice of white bread. Nothing particularly wrong with it but also nothing exciting.
Seems weird that parcel shelf. Years ago you would get a proper spare wheel and now they do a spare saver wheel or even nothing at all. Then we had the proper parcel shelf and now we have a piece of cloth with a couple of clips to hold it together. Cheap and cheerful. 😂😂
It used to be my family car. Easy to drive, have a simple centre console, got good mileage, and well designed. What I don’t like about it is such as, rear seats are bit small and won’t be reclined to the fullest, though these are not big deals. Overall, it’s the most cost efficient car of all other similarly sized vehicles.
i ve driven the yaris cross multiple times (pre facelift), and yes you can drive it very economical, but sometimes you rather have the feeling it's a dacia than a toyota, the interior is extremely cheap made. you got almost 0 sound isolation. the doors feel cheap while opening and closing as well as the trunk, there is no electric sunroof available, the seats give 0 support. i could live with all of that apart from the really bad seats, but considering the price...i mean wtf...i really like SUVs, I don't need one i am not driving one but the price is just sick, you get a corolla sw, for moreless the same with a smoother engine, way better sound isolation, seats, interior quality, space and trunk space... I like the higher seating position but it's not worth the price. i would not recommend driving a toyota hybrid in b mode unless you really go downhill, cuz the regen stays the same, but the engine kicks in and supports to slow down which feels weird and is not very economical.
That visibility issue at 10:48 is the reason we removed this car from our potential list. Anyone know a similar one that doesn't have this problem (Kia Niro also has it!)
Test drove the Toyota Premier, top of the range, Yaris Cross against the Nissan Juke N Sport hybrid. The more powerful motor in the Premier was a huge improvement over the older115 BHP. Interior was poor compared to Juke which was more solid, better seats, much better digital dashboard, storage (surprisingly large glove box, centre armrest cubby) , infotainment (the around view camera was a fuzzy affair compared to the crisp screen on the Nissan) , ergonomics (the camera button and several others are hidden under the right hand side dash, I had to open the door in order to see them 😀) etc. Expected the Jukes 19 inch wheels (why Nissan?) to be awful and was pleasantly surprised by the better ride and body control. Toyota 10-15mpg better than the Nissan, as well as other positives like roof rails, powered tailgate, warranty, sun roof option, through load and centre cup holders etc. In the end the Juke just seemed like a larger more solid, planted on the road car that I would rather spend time in, showing the importance of long test drives. 👍
For the same price you get an Audi A3 Sedan and you have room for the rear passenger , lots of boot space, nice and quite ride amd quality! And it has good looks too!
I have this car since 2023 , I average 75 mpg for driving as I’m very careful on how I drive , it also tells you your driving score and I’m always in the 80s , better than an EV my range shows over 500 miles , takes me 3 mins to full up and off I go, acoustic glass . They 17inch wheels are awful on the road went to 16inch must better
I really like the Yaris Cross, my Mrs has one, wasn't keen on it when she bought it but it's grown on me now. Amazing on fuel too, her work commute she can get into the low 70s mpg and in winter it still gets high 60s mpg It's a very good A to B car and it's been 100% reliable too and you get a decent amount of tech as standard too
I was a passenger in an older version of this car and didn't have a great experience. While the newer model might have some improvements, in my case, the transition between electric mode and the engine was quite rough. Accelerating quickly from a standstill caused noticeable shaking, and the pickup for highway merging was underwhelming, even with the electric motor's assistance. Additionally, when driving on the motorway, the car felt like it wanted to roll around corners, especially in the back seats. It doesn’t seem well-suited for highway driving and requires a cautious and easy approach in the city. Having been in other Toyota hybrids before, I expected better from this one. Personally, I don't see the appeal of these crossovers and think the standard Yaris Hybrid would be a better option.
Last years model, manual with only petrol engine. Similar experience although it does ok job, nothing glamorous though. Cross is better for shitty roads, parking on curbs and gravel... basically a normal non-western Europe experience xD
@@Lemingtona-x5g Hey look, you don't have to get all defensive. I was just sharing my personal experience, and I know it might not be the same for everyone. Whether I was a passenger or the driver shouldn't really change the perspective I was giving. I totally get that for most people, these things might not be a big deal and that it's a perfectly good car-after all, they wouldn't sell so many if it wasn't! I was just saying that, in my opinion, it doesn't quite feel like a driver's car, and I expected a bit more since it's a Toyota. No hard feelings!
Base model has pretty much all the features average consumers would want in a car. Good price (for what cars cost today) and a maker that is known to be reliable
I got the 2021 Yaris Cross. Great car, no regrets buying it, but there is stuff i wish was different. As you have shown, the bottle/cup holder is horrendous. I wish we had a US style gear leaver on the stearing or a rotating knob, to free up space for better cupholders. I also wish the center rest was bigger and the arm rest in the drivers door was 7-8cm furter back with more padding. The center colum could be 5-8cm narrower for more leg space. For the tech, i found the engaging of the driving assists in my 2021 better than in the new 2024 refresh models. The line assist also is a 50/50 in my car and doesn't see the lines half the time. And lastly, it's loud for a hybrid. Especially uphill or when you have to floor it...
Interesting that they have put in a thicker windscreen. The 2024 face-lift Yaris has had issues with windscreens cracking at the top where the safety camera etc are. I wonder if it is an improved windscreen or that the Yaris Cross will suffer the same issue?
My Parents got a Yaris Cross in 2022 - it's Japanese spec (We're in New Zealand) so it has the cool individual displays for the gauges n stuff. They Love it.
Looks shockingly cheap. At least the French and Germans give you the sense that they've put some effort in even if underneath they're only made to last a 4-year PCP cycle!
@@arturasj4607 It's not cheap when you can get a Mazda CX30 for less, which has more equipment, a far more premium interior, drives better and isn't built like a Willys Jeep. This Yaris Cross looks like it was thrown together.

Does the solar charge the 12V battery automatically when you insert that solar cable into EOBD port?
I believe you can start your Yaris Cross Hybrid using Toyota mobile app. My bro in law uses the app to start his BYD ev cars while he is away on vacations.
Had mine for a year and agree with everything you've described. I bought a jump starter for the battery after it failed to start in the winter.
Toyota is making really great cars right now, most of others traditional manufacturers (VW, Stellantis....) are lost.
stellantis is fiat

That’s because of the tiny engine. RAV4 hybrid barely makes noise and is excellent economic as well
That’s not my experience with my Lexus 450h, very good on the motorway and better economy.
@GundogJake how does being a hybrid improve economy on the motorway

DO NOT drive around in B mode in any Toyota Hybrid as Mat was doing in this video. It is only meant as a downhill engine assistance brake. It's not meant to be used for regen. Any complaints with this car come down to its class. You know this is going last a long time compared to a peugeot or vw.
my understanding was that B mode actually increases engine breaking and stops or reduces charging the batteries to prevent them overheating when going down hills or steep inclines

Still undecided if I should have got the Corolla for better visability and more interior space.

i ve driven the yaris cross multiple times (pre facelift), and yes you can drive it very economical, but sometimes you rather have the feeling it's a dacia than a toyota, the interior is extremely cheap made. you got almost 0 sound isolation. the doors feel cheap while opening and closing as well as the trunk, there is no electric sunroof available, the seats give 0 support. i could live with all of that apart from the really bad seats, but considering the price...i mean wtf...i really like SUVs, I don't need one i am not driving one but the price is just sick, you get a corolla sw, for moreless the same with a smoother engine, way better sound isolation, seats, interior quality, space and trunk space... I like the higher seating position but it's not worth the price. i would not recommend driving a toyota hybrid in b mode unless you really go downhill, cuz the regen stays the same, but the engine kicks in and supports to slow down which feels weird and is not very economical.

It's a very good A to B car and it's been 100% reliable too and you get a decent amount of tech as standard too
I was a passenger in an older version of this car and didn't have a great experience.
