  • Kaytee dominates the market on small mammal cages. But today's cage is being reviewed in a negative light for Hamsters/Gerbils/Mice. Why is this cage bad you may ask? And what are the benefits of something like this or is there more negatives than positives?

I feel bad, my girlfriend and I just recently in the last 4 days got a Syrian hamster and we almost would have left him in nearly this same cage. Luckily for Curio his Critter trail was broken and it being broken made me research "best hamster cage" and I very quickly realize he needed a bigger cage. We returned this one and ended up getting him a 40 gallon breeder tank.
We are both adults with no kids and we fell for this too. We didn't realize they needed that much space because every cage I've ever seen for them until recently has been maybe 300 square inches at best. The colors looked nice and we thought "oh it comes with everything." We ended up buying his breeder tank for the exact same price as his critter trail. 50 dollars. we also bought a 200 liter bin before we found the breeder tank and it was only 12 dollars. These just don't make sense. You're so right this is just a gimmick and marketing besides being unsuitable for the hamster.

If people can’t even take some time to do some research on how to properly take care of a pet, then odds are they aren’t ready to take care of one.
If you want a pet that badly, then you shouldn’t have at problem doing some research first to make sure your pet will be a happy pet, not a miserable one.

I've learned so much from your videos. When I was really young (before anything but dial up was available to me) I spent a whole year reading and learning about hamsters to convince my mom to get one. I probably read a half dozen books and not one, not a single one talked about how horrible these small cages are for hamsters (most of them only cared about toys and diet or history, but a lot of them were ten years or more out of date even for the time) or how frequently these cages are the cause of hamsters distress and problems.
When I was little we had a crittertrail cage and I had so many problems, and I unfortunately was someone who completely unknowingly gave a hamster a bad life, and I vowed I would never get one again because of what had happened.
I own guinea pigs now (Four and three year olds I've had since young), with a lot more research and understanding of their needs than I ever could have had as a kid for hamsters. I've bettered myself as a small animal pet owner, realizing mistakes I made early on even with my guinea pigs and look to continue bettering myself to give my piggies the best life they can have.
Videos like these help a lot, I hope more people see these.
There really is an extreme lack of information out there on cages especially unless you specifically seek it out (though there is more now then when I was a child), and a lot of pet stores don't help people understand what they're getting into with an animal. Many even offer deals where if you buy an animal they include food, cage "everything you need" and frequently what they give you isn't enough or the correct environment for whatever animal you're purchasing.
So I'd like to offer a very sincere thank you for continuing to explain that these cages are bad and why, and hope people make more informed decisions and see videos like these before they purchase a small animal, so they don't make the mistakes I did when I was young, and more innocent hamsters no longer get hurt or pass away from people who are ignorant.

It baffles me that people think that just because hamsters are "inexpensive" pets that they don't deserve the best care, or don't deserve research to be done about how to care for them. People research tons about their dogs and cats, why shouldn't hamsters/gerbils/mice get the same attention? Just because they are small? Shameful.

technicality they are inexpensive pets. Cause factor in all the costs and cats and dogs are more expensive monthly. But what I learned is that people go for small animals more because of how 'hassle free' and how apartments don't qualify caged animals as pets so they can live with you always as more factors. There is also more misinformation about caged pets vs a non caged pet.

This happened to me, it was years ago (about 10 or so years ago) with more misinformation going around (and I'm not sure pettubers were a thing at the time). My Syrian hamster, Coco, was on top of a huge stand (along with Lexi (another Syrian) , not in the same cage but they were close to each other) that was 4 or 5 feet off the ground and she chewed through the plastic and we didn't know it. We only found her because she was in my younger sister's room and she scared my sister because Coco matched her floor and she freaked out and only saw her floor moving. (I should mention it wasn't this exact cage but it was a critter tail with tubes attached and looking back on it now it was SO horrible.) Thankfully she was ok!

Then we got a second dwarf hamster (neither of the two were robo) and when we got a second hamster we also bought one simple critter trail tube that is straight and we connected another critter trail cage to it the one that comes with a slide and spinning wheel on top of slide with hideout on the side, we also had gotten the flying saucer with it and a new water bottle with the metal ball for the first hamster and we noticed he started drinking more than before I guess it all has to do with the water bottle . and then we also got chew toys for them and at first they did fight but that’s because the white/brownish dwarf hamster was alone for 2 months stressed and then the black dwarf came in with the new cage connected so the white one was very jealous and not used to it and black one was scared but then a day later they became friends and they don’t fight anymore

When I was younger I had a cage very similar to this for not only a hamster, but a gerbil that was given to me after the hamster passed. Now that I’m older I can see how terrible this is. I can hardly see how my female Syrian (“Teddy bear”) OR my female gerbil even fit inside of there without me seeing the issue. Heck, I can hardly see how either of them didn’t ESCAPE! And I know I mishandled them, as I didn’t even know there was research to be done. My first small pets. I wish I could really take that back, and give them what they deserved.
Rest In Peace, my little girls. You are missed.
These videos have actually helped me a lot, even though I don’t own hamsters or gerbils anymore. I’m a proud parent of a pair of guinea pigs and a couple flying squirrels. Watching videos of yours helped to push me into doing more research, and in turn made my family notice how serious I am about the safety and housing of the critters that, of both pairs, we got by complete surprise (to myself)/ without prior thought or research.
Please, everyone, do research before you get a pet, our even after and make corrections if able. Make sure your pets, or whatever kind, are safe, healthy, and happy, because before you know it they may be gone. 💕

I got two Russian dwarf hamsters when I was younger for Christmas. I kept them in one small critter trail, and a week after I got them they almost killed each other. I quickly learned they should not be housed together and we had to get another cage. The cages broke multiple times and we probably spent over $80 on cages from buying these cheap small cages. I wish I had known to just buy 2 $20 bin cages and done some actual research and not listen to the pet stores. This year I have realized how much I want a hamster again. I have watched Victoria Racheal and your channel. I learned so much in just one day and I’ve been researching for almost 3 months now. The amount you can learn about them is incredible. My birthday is in one month and my parents said I can get one after weeks of asking, so I am very glad. Ahhh... this thing... alright I'm gonna fess up.... I had a dwarf in this.
I had rex just last year. He was 2 and a half when I got him, my friend was kind of... not taking very good care of him. Like when he'd chew the bars she'd put him *outside.* more on that in a moment but she'd also give him things like goldfish crackers and the cage was already kind of broken down... I offered to be his retirement home since she was dealing with even more issues and I am glad I ended up with him... but watching these videos have been a humbling experience.
Like I said, he came in this one. The ball was broken, the lookout latch was broken, the side connector pieces were broken and I only found out... after waking up at 6 am and trying to figure where he escaped and also trying to find him before the dog noticed... made me wonder how he hadnt escaped outside and just up and vanished when she'd put him outside, all night, for chewing the bars.... anyway ended up taping down the latches. And my god cleaning was an absolute bitch too, it would take longer to clean then my rabbit pen. Would take almost an hour trying to scrub those stupid tubes. Got a new one after 3 weeks of bullshit, and it was bigger but... it sounds like it still wasnt up to standard....
I fixed his diet... I kept him safe and... tried to keep him happy but it sounds like... that's about it... Rex was a white dwarf and I feel awful now seeing all this stuff I wish I had done so much more for him. I wish I had even thought of it, like at best it sounds like I was able to give minor improvements to his life but not much more... I havent had a hamster since, I very rarely seek out the pets I get... but I should've done better. I definitely think he was better off with me but I really should've done alot better.
Space is something I've definitely been taking more seriously the past few years when it comes to small animals, I can thank my gecko for that and I love the different things you can do and the setups are just so much nicer and like my rabbits before that, lots of space.. I just wish it even dawned on me for rex, to just give him a nice massive space, I've been in tears just about listening to the things you've said and I really feel awful and.. all I can say is at least if I end up having to take in another one, I'll know better... and I'll make sure I do it right..
That and I work at a petco now... people tend to ask me questions I will be sure to share some of the enclosure information as often as I can.

Admittedly I did have one if the Critter Trail cages for my rabbit. Realized pretty quickly that it was too small and bought a 6 panel child play yard off Craig’s list. I did end up using the cage as a hide however by covering it with a fleece blanket which she seemed to like.

Ant farms: Depends on the size of the colony. When a colony is just starting, a test tube is actually ideal. Slowly up grading as the colony grows lets the keeper keep an eye on the health of the colony, and treat issues, like parasitic mites, faster. They do ultimately end up in something like a 40 gallon tank, or bigger, but it can take a long time.

I don't understand when people see the cages are flimsy, see tubes that look impossible to even use, breaks too easily and can't put anything in it and they are still like "oh my hamster is fine, this is fine" because they think of them as an accessory or decoration for their home and not a living, breathing, wonderful thing with its own personality.
Love you Munchie and I too hope people see the flaws soon

Had one of these bad boys when I was growing up. It’s where I had my dwarf hamster, Nina. It lasted a day before some aspect of the cage broke. We made her a makeshift cage out of a tote bc we couldn’t afford to replace the cage. She seemed happier in it, so we never bothered to get her a new one. 12 years later, turns out the makeshift tote cage home was better for her. The universe was trying to tell me something. I remember how much I loved watching her burrow.

I’m probably getting a male mouse today, if not very soon, and watching your videos makes me proud I actually did my research. I have a 20 gallon long tank, which is 360 square inches of floor space. It’s in the darkest, coolest corner of my room and right above it is a sarong on the wall that gently flaps due to the wind going past so itll help get lots of airflow into the tank but not too much (wire cage would be too gusty from my understanding and risk temperature shock because the temperature here is around 80° but the wind is usually 55-65°). I have 2 hard hides and 1 hammock, a toilet paper roll kind dug into the bedding, multiple bridges/ladders, 3” of aspen shavings bedding (which I may increase if my mouse digs around a lot), an 8” wooden and cork rodent wheel, ceramic food bowl, metal drip water bottle, and various chew toys already scattered around. Not a single thing in my cage is plastic and I think that’s cool. I’m also ready with food pellets and a seed/fruit mix that have the right percentages of fat, protein, and fiber for mice and extra treats on hand.
I’ve never had a pet rodent before and I’m super excited. I hope this setup works really well for my mouse. I wish there were more first time rodent owners who put as much effort as I did into researching and gathering the right things for their animal before getting it, I’ve been complimented so much online as I’ve posted updates on my tank because a lot of people are genuinely surprised or happy that I’m actually getting acceptable stuff for my mouse. It wasn’t that hard to find info online and I’m literally setting up to take care of another creature, I don’t know why there are people out there who can’t even do the bare minimum. All of my items have come out to about $200 total and that’s,, barely anything compared to a dog or cat, and those don’t even need an $80 tank lol

I can't find "50 sq inch cages" online because they never seem to list the dimensions (at least not in the listings I saw) but two I could find online after I thought to tell you about them were the Raymond hamster cage (first result when I googled that exact phrase) and the 2 tier IRIS hamster cage (also the first result when I googled that exact phrase). They are SO unbelievably small even compared to critter trails and such. When I saw them (and other similar ones, some WORSE) I said "if there was a hamster hell, this is what it would be". 😢

I had a hamster years ago who had a plastic no bars princess cage and i admit it was roughly the same size as this cage but as a teenager living at home and working i ended up getting addicted to buying about $500 worth of tubes making him a wonderful playground. I also added a huge habitrail wheel cage i connected with tubes and he loved it and got rid of the horrible tiny wheel.
I agree with what i’ve learned from these videos.
But from what I experienced with my hamster he loved his cage, he never chewed the plastic he escaped afew times but never actually left the area around the cage. I did clean the tubes every week and took them appart snd reattached them in fun different ways. he would explored the new set up and then go to his food dish stock up snd go back up the tubes to his sleep area.
I never had an issue with broken tubes as I always kept them in good condition as an adult owner and neither did my hamster.
But yes i have learned alot, thank you for videos
