  • Kaytee dominates the market on small mammal cages. But today's cage is being reviewed as a travel carrier and why it's ONLY a travel carrier. So why is this cage bad as a main cage for housing your hamster, gerbil or mouse you may ask? Today you'll learn about the quality and functionality of this type of cage.

Basic rule of thumb: if the company says that it’s for a:
    Ferret
    Chinchilla
    Rabbit
    Then it is suitable for
    A small hamster
    Mouse
    Tiny tiny tiny rat

I have pet rats and every time I buy something from Amazon, I always have to buy ‘rabbit sized’ hammocks and toys because the last time I bought something that was ‘for a rat’, it ended up being too small for even a damn Syrian hamster.

When I was younger, my brothers had 2 dwarf hamster. We as a family where not informed on the proper care, and therefore we did not have a proper cage and kept them together. Sadly they both passed, one from unknown causes and the other hung herself while trying to escape.
Almost 2 years ago my brother, step-sister, and I got new hamsters. They both had Syrians, I got a Robo. We where still uninformed, and didn't really think about doing research. My brothers hamster was very agressive when we got her from the store and sadly passed away because she was sick. My step-sisters hamster went through 2 cages. Both where broken when we opened them. She also escaped a lot and. Broke off her teeth from chewing on the bars. I found her in the bottom of her cage, barely breathing, and she passed soon after.
My hamster has recently been move into a bin cage, soon after I found you, and I have seen a huge difference in her behavior. She doesn't panic as much, and she seems so much happier.

Ailyn Herrera my cousin has two hamsters and I’ve told her she should get bin cages like I have for my hamsters and she says she doesn’t have the space or that she’ll get a bin cage for her Syrian if I make her one but will just connect a second critter trail to her dwarfs cage because she doesn’t have space for another bin. It makes me mad that she’d be willing to give proper cage to one hamster and not the other.

    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 ปีที่แล้ว

@@derynsauer9973 Why does she want to connect a Syrian enclosure with a dwarf enclosure? The two different species don't mix well. Bur do her hamsters a favor, built the lids for both bins if she buys the bins, roll of steel mesh, and the zip ties...

I've never owned a hamster (I'm more of a rat gall), but it breaks my heart that some pet hamsters spend their entire life in this poor excuse for a cage. The five welfare needs include access to food and water, ability to be kept with or away from others, shelter, medical care and ability to perform natural behaviours. Animals kept in this have limited access to burrowing and exercise and would certainly spend most of their lifespan stressed and disorientated. Not to mention that the only opening is at the top, which means you have to catch the hamster from above. Hamsters are prey animals, so that must be pretty scary! I'm glad you rescue hamsters stuck in such habitats, as well as educate for better welfare

When I purchased my hamster from my pet smart they wouldn’t let me leave with my hamster without buying a cage there and I already bought a tank for my hamster and just got a latter carrier so I could leave and put my hamster in the tank

So they made you waste money? I am poor so I never buy more than what I need for my pets. A store is a store. You go there to buy what you want, not what they want. That's really sad actually and you should of spoke up. I would not liked to bossed around like that. I wouldn't be rude obviously, but I would be assertive and tell them that I already have what I need and I'm not going to spend unnecessary money.

I would recommend trying to find independent pet stores. The one I go to gets it’s animals from completely safe places and they are usually rescues as well. They also don’t force you to buy anything more than what you want to buy. It’s also a family run business and such so it’s much safer to get animals from there. It is good to buy from petco/petsmart/petsathome because you could rescue the animals from there, in a sense, but that is still giving money to them and it’s not something I’d recommend

Thanks to Munchie we upgraded our Russian Dwarf from a small Petsmart cage to the largest bin Home Depot sells. Over 865 sq. Inches. He has it all in there. A ton of substrate, a large sand bath, a running saucer (Above reccomend size for dwarf), multiple hide homes, paper based bedding over 6 inches deep, tubes in the substrate and around, a few bend bridges, alot of chew toys, Higgins food, along w the Rodent Blocks u recomend, Higgens dried healthy treats, and some dry Meal Worms.. He is in heaven. Thank u for teaching me everything we needed to make his home happy :) Gummy Bear thanks u too :) Best of luck and thanks for sharing Munchie 💛

I just want to say my friend used to have 2 dwarf hamsters in the same cage. ( a critter trail cage) One day one of the hamsters eaten the other one. They didn’t do there research and well this happened and for all the people that don’t do research before they buy a hamster you are risking your hamster life.

Oh god. We used to have white mice. My parents bought us 4 of them. (2 each.) They were all male, and it was a 20 gallon fish tank i believe. I'm pretty sure some of them killed each other because we dropped from 4 to 2 to 1. My parents even tried separating them with a chunk of drywall but they chewed through it.
It was well intended but poorly executed.

Ewa Kalisiak my cousin got a hamster (she thought it was a male but it wasn’t) and she brought it home in a carrier with another hamster because they were both males and a few weeks later her hamster had babies. of course she didn’t know how to properly care for the babies and one baby died and the mother died a few weeks later. the 3 other babies survived and one is now mine :) she was in a critter trail but now she is in a bin cage and I’ve been trying to tell my cousin that her cages are too small but she won’t listen :(

🤣🤣🤣 ‘Latch’ by Disclousure!!! literally started playing in my head as soon as you dropped Latch! 🤪 My God, I thought Sam’s voice was freakin unique. I was on edge waiting to hear is voice again in another song. 😬Geez that was like 2012,2013😱 Time flies... Back to the TOPIC I miss people actually demonstrating what the flimsy latches are like and how the wires don’t line up like the photo. So nice for people to not give up on pressing and educating Kaytee on their room for improvements and continuing education either.

I remember when they were called critter trail minis. I used it when I had to separate my robos because my 15 year old self listened to the pet store when they said my pair would be a cute and lovey. Pearl beat the tar out of Diamond every single night for a week so I only had $20 and got a mini to house Diamond until I could rehome her. Then I used it for Pearl when she turned 3 and started having trouble moving in her elder years. I remember thinking it was so cute. I always oiled my wheels with olive oil.

I use the large, OXO Good Grips GreenSaver Produce Keeper for travel. I remove the basket and fill the container with bedding. A grape or a thick slice of cucumber will provide any liquid and food they need for a short trip to the vet. I have the Kaytee CritterTrail One Level Habitat for RV travel. It is fairly easy to attach a 1" flat strap, with a little glue, to the produce keeper or the CritterTrail to make them easier to transport but I prefer to just carry them to reduce vibration and swing. I use my own accessories for the CritterTrail. You are so right about the Kaytee ones being junk.

I'm glad I watched this, I was looking at this for a travel cage for my mice, but seeing it in person, it's not gonna be big enough for even a car ride for my three girls. Honestly at this point I'm just gonna put a ten gallon in a box and strap it in

Munchie, please check out the Aleko 3 tier hamster cage! I just got it and it’s amazing!!! I got it from Walmart online for $99 with free shipping. (Although I’ve seen it various places from between $99 and $140.) It is ENORMOUS! Over 1,000 sq inches, 3 safe levels (they have a small platform under each so it’s not a large drop down from the top), it comes with 2 seesaws, 2 large hides, a large water bottle, and a large water dish! The top completely opens for easy access, the bottom compartment fully opens so bedding can be stacked high. It’s wooden, and so beautiful. I was going to go with the Prevue, but then I came across this one and I figured I would give it a shot. I’m SO glad I did! This changes up the game!!!! I feel like this is exactly what the hamster community was looking for. It’s getting mediocre reviews, and I don’t understand why. Perhaps because it’s a wooden cage? I feel like most of them are fake reviews from kids, which is so strange. Honestly, I feel like the hamsters are just as likely to chew through cheap plastic. I give my little hamster plenty of chew toys so I don’t have that issue. Please can you try to review this cage, as I don’t want them to pull it from the market.

The material reminds me of the material of the betta cups at pet stores. I use them for water changes, transport containers or holding containers sometimes, and I've had plenty crack and break on me. I'm surprised they don't break more often xD I wish I could do more for those poor bettas..

Hey Munchie! I’ve been watching for a while and I know a lot about hamsters already, I love watching your videos! I have been considering getting mice, rats, or gerbils. But not for a while since I’ll be going to college, but I was wondering if you would ever make beginner care videos for any of those animals? Not rushing you at all especially because of the virus, I was just curious. Also my condolences for your loss
