      Tyriel 85 This cage is actually too small to house any species of hamster.. the minimum cage size for hamsters is 80cm x 50cm x 40cm, and the minimum cage size for gerbils is similar to a 40 gallon breeders tank. It’s cruel to house any small animal in this cage, as it doesn’t allow a deep enough layer of bedding for burrowing, and it also doesn’t give the hamster enough room to express natural behaviours. If you’re in the UK, I would recommend ordering the alaska from zooplus for £31.99, or £29.99. It meets the minimum and will give your hamster a large enough space to play in.

    • @WrathfulTyriel
      @WrathfulTyriel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hazeldawnray584 for my Fancy mouse...he burrows just fine. I put bedding in the top compartment and that's his goto sleep spot. Yes I agree for a hamster or gerbil this would not be a good tank but I never stated what the tank was for. He is a undersized albino fancy mouse...so plenty of room for him to wander and such. Thanks for the reply and I hope it helps someone.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am sorry, I am not trying to judge but that cage is too small. I found a bin cage for 10 dollars that is 660 square inches. Great video and content and very relaxing music.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HI Olivia, click on the link to see it in a village. We did testing on bin cages also by providing connecting tunnels to them and the gerbils elected to spend almost all of their time in the smaller units so we no longer offer them the bin cages. I know they are a favorite for people as they are also very inexpensive. Thanks for your kindness :)

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ColeTheKillerCat :/ Thanks, I'll keep my videos up. I never suggest that a single small cage is enough for small pets. I'll leave those decisions to individual consumers as I really don't dictate practices to others. Your comment may aid in continuing the message that most single habitats are not enough as a stand-alone unit. Thanks for stopping in.

    I wouldnt say this cage is excellent for gerbils unless it is a part of a bigger cage (as in your case). On its own it is fpr sure too small for gerbils. Great video though :) regards

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks... I agree with you... this unit is part of a four cage system here... they use each habitat for special purposes and it would certainly be very confining to have just ONE habitat. Our gerbils are thriving and use this extreme habitat for exercise and fun... the "petting center" is filled with food that they brought in from another cage.

    • @alicjawax
      @alicjawax 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frederick Dunn That sounds great :) I also do have this cage but unfortunately only one from the set so cant join it with anything else so I only put them there for some play time :) I really meant only the 'excellent for gerbils' bit in your title, as it can be misunderstood by someone looking for reviews about this cage (and wating it for gerbils). Other than that it is quite a good cage for a hamster for example, or for gerbils as a part of a bigger cage :) best regards to you and for your gerbils :) I love those creatures :))

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** wow... our gerbils haven't dig through anything "yet" but they do a considerable amount of scratching... I agree that the bottoms could be deeper to allow them to feel they have achieved some level of darkness... but they have packed bedding into one of the petting zones which is on top and prefer to sleep there... it's all very interesting...

    • @OMGaComputer
      @OMGaComputer 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frederick Dunn i agree with above, gerbils could do with around a foot of deep bedding to dig tunnels. that's the kind of challenge that they love!

      First make sure that the wheel is not dragging on bedding and isn't rubbing on the cage wires, then lubricate the axle with olive oil :) Test it by spinning with your fingers until you figure out why it's getting friction...

      Here's a funny story.. My mom would always constantly say "NO! No hamsters or gerbils or any other small animal blah blah cause they smell so much!" Had to deal with that for 2 years. I finally got the idea one day to lure my mom to petsmart by telling her I need some filter pads for my 5 gal. tank, and she said ok. I was looking at the hamsters and told her "come here mom" She did come and started looking. She said "they look cute, especially the mice, but we can't have one." There was a info tab on carefresh bedding and how they absorb the smell then told her about it. She finally said "Finneee.. You can have one male mice." She finally gave in! I've been researching for around 3 days now, think i'm ready so im getting him today.

    This isn’t the only cage right? Animals like gerbils and hamsters and mice need large areas of unbroken floor space that this does not have, also the tubes are extremely dangerous for larger hamsters like Syrians.

      Yxrkie I would not recommend for a Syrian as the wheel is too small and can hurt their back and the tubes are so small that they can get stuck and hurt themselves or suffocate. I am not trying to hate or anything but I think most hamster owners don't like crittertrail because the cage itself and everything in the cage is too small. (Just my opinion)😊

    The SuperPet Critter Trial cage is NOT suitable for any gerbils, or hamsters. Gerbils will chew right through the cheap plastic material, and on top of that, gerbils need a tank or glass enclosure. Since gerbils spend most of their life burrowing in bedding, meaning you want to fill a tank up all the way up, I recommend 40-gallon breeder tanks with a cage topper. By using the cage topper, you can add a wooden wheel (since gerbils can chew threw VERY thick plastic including their wheels) and the food dish. As for hamsters this cage is obviously way too small, not even meeting the US bare minimum of floorspace, 450sq inches. Meaning this cage is absolute garbage (expensive garbage at that). For hamsters I recommend bin cages, and tanks. A 200qt bin from Home Depot only costs 30$ and its well over the bare minimum, coming in around 670sq inches. And all you have to do is diy some ventilation on the lid with zip ties and metal mesh. Which means a 200qt bin cage is basically the same size as a 50-gallon tank for over half the price. By getting a suitable cage you can actually provide your hamster or gerbil with its proper enrichment and basic necessities. Which the needs of gerbils and hamsters are very different as well. I recommend watching Victoria Raechel, or Munchies Place, both of which are great pet care channels on TH-cam. Please do your research (thorough research) over any animal before even thinking of adopting it.

    • @FrederickDunn

      Well, they didn't chew out, so maybe these aren't like yours :)

    • @ZoesPetitePets
      @ZoesPetitePets 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FrederickDunn true some gerbils might not chew out, however it’s likely that they will over time. All I’m saying is that the cage itself is too small for gerbils. Even the base is too shallow for an proper amount of bedding to make proper burrows. Besides this gerbils have been shown to be able to chew through PVC pipes, which is some of the thickest plastic out there. Not trying to offend anyone by my comment, but I’m simply trying to explain why I believe marketing or promoting Kaytee critter trails for any small animal is wrong. (Except maybe their newer super habitat blue cage which is a decent size and great for dwarf hamsters)

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kristin, thanks, I don't tell anyone what to get, but I do answer questions about what they look lke and how they go together. This cage is part of a village. We've done lots of testing with vilages and bins, connecting them with tubes. In this case there are Gerbils, we also did it with Robo-Hamsters and found them showing a distinct preference for smaller habitats when all is connected. Bins were ignored by the small hamsters and gerbils and 90% of nesting, sleeping, and eating (food storage) took place in the small pods of Habitrail units. So, if we're trusting the small mammals to show us what they prefer, it's clear that large bins are not chosen first. We use observation and small mammal biology as our guides. I get it, people have been told to use 400 sq inches minimum. That's actually been a stresser for small mammals that instinctively need to be near a small hiding place for their emotional health. Open spaces are where predators have the opportunity to nab them. I hope that makes sense? But test it yourself. Set up a large bin with lots of litter/bedding. Connect that to smaller Habitrail or Crittertrail environments and see where they end up. You may be surprised. I wish you all the best.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for sharing Kadie. We have done a lot ot testing and observations. This prticular cage is part of a village. We also connected several small cages to large bin cages that so many people keep them in. The gergils in this case, elected to use the smaller cages and only passed through the bins. We went with what they showed us that they prefer. You can do the tests and observations yourself and see what your pets show that they prefer. With the robo hamsters, we also have a habitrail village, we connected that to large bins and the robo hamsters demonstrated zero interest in the bins and elected to live, sleep and eat in the smaller Habitrail habitats. Completely repeatable. Try it yourself and learn what your pets choose. Thank you for the invitation to "learn some things about hamsters" we are in a constant state of learning, are you?
