  • When it comes to Oxbow, they provide great care for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and even Rats. But unfortunately we have issues with their care for Hamsters. Today i am reviewing their newly released Hamster cage that has been marketed towards both the big Syrian hamsters and the smallest of dwarf hamsters. You'll see it unboxed, put together while being provided critical information on what's appropriate and what isn't and why this cage is frowned upon in the Hamster Community. Today's featured hamster is none other than Star, our longest foster hamster at our Rescue.
    Why not consider fostering yourself? Get involved and see for yourself what it means to be a Foster Home.

    I work at a pet store and we get these in (not by my choice..) and for some really strange reason, they ship the item to us with the box sealed INSIDE OUT?! So I usually take it apart and flip the box the right way so customers can see it + we can now scan it. That's probably why it was the way it was with the tape and looking touched. Just an FYI :)

    I don't know if you'll ever read this comment, but if you do I just wanted to say THANK YOU from the deepest part of my heart.
    I got a male Dwarf campbell's hamster on march of this year. He's all white, his name is Sidney and he is the cutest thing ever, I love him with all my heart. Sadly here in latin america cages are even worse than the critter trails, when I went to the pet store they only had this horrible wired cages, and I mean, even the floor was wire, there was litteraly no room for even an inch of bedding. I got the biggest one (I never liked the wires, but I though it was the best because it was considerably bigger than the rest of cages). Of course I could see that the wire was horrible so I tried to look for something better. Lucky me, a month later I finally found something I tough was better, a cage very similar to a critter trail. I believed it was better because the floor seemed more confortable. My hamster only lasted a couple of weeks on that cage because while I was doing some research for his diet I found your channel. All of my fellow spanish pet youtubers told me that 200 square inches was a right size for a hamster. And I was really lucky to found your channel that gave me a whole new idea of how hamster care needs to be.
    I got a new cage (It's basically the same cage that Vanilla Ham Ham shows on her diy hamster cage video). And of course filling the cage was the other big problem because literally the only hamster accessory you can get here is a ceramic hide (of course it was not enough to make the cage crowded) so I made a lot of wood diy toys, hides and plataforms.
    Sadly here in latin america being a good pet owner is really hard (at least for hamsters) because in most cities you would never be able to get proper accessories or enclousures, not even on the internet, I already tried. And I really hope this changes, people in here already has good intentions for their pets, the only thing that we need is that more appropiate accessories arrive to us (cages, wheels, hides, bedding, toys, munchies, etc) because right now they're imposible to find, I needed to diy almost everything. I love my country but we urgently need to improve our pet care.
    I'm doing my best to improve my hamie's life as good as I can, diet, toys, sand baths and good care in general.
    I really love him and I wanted to thank you a lot for doing this job, if it wasn't for you I could never know that I was doing wrong. You changed my beloved hamster's life. Now I always speak to my friends and tell them how to take good care of a hamster, so more people can be well informed.
    It was a long comment, but I wanted to share my story and tell you how thankfull I'm (if you ever read this) (Sorry if there was some mistakes, my english is not perfect).
    Hugs and love

    A kid in my class got a hamster this weekend. Judging by the way he described the hamster's actions, it gave me an idea of the cage and the hamster, which sounded stressed.
    I wanted to cry. It makes me so bad that people still keep purchasing the hamsters and not doing their research. I'll make my own handbooks and put them in PetSmart racks and on cages and stuff. I'll see if I can try to inform this kid. Although almost every kid in my grade is ignorant. It really bothers me.

    I got my first hamster last week. She's a 10 month old winter white called Mitsuha. She lived in a 260 sq in cage in her previous home, with barely any bedding, (which might've actually been a good thing in this case, since it was really dusty pine shavings) and only a wheel and a hide. On top of that, all of her things were sticky?? Now she has a 835 sq in natural setup with lots of bedding and things to explore, and my brother even made her a multi chamber hide as a surprise 🤗

Got the ferplast ‘rabbit’ cage on Amazon. £100 but worth it. 99x51.5x36 so about 760 sq inches. Also got my 20cm wheel on amazon. Was cheaper and actually suitable compared to the overpriced 12cm wheels I saw in store. UK pet stores are unfortunately just as guilty.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve informed about big cages ect and they still end up picking the critter carrier. If bigger companies like Ox actually listened and made proper cages, maybe more people will listen.

    You should do a series where you review good cages so some people know what some of the good cages look like

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is very few and far between cages that're good and most are outside of the US so imported fees are applied heavily. The lixit Haven cage and kaytee supertrail are expensive cages that i don't personally want to use due to their size as i don't like using them for Syrians. All of my rescues are in 600+ sq inches if they're adult syrians. I did make an unboxing and cleaning video of the prevue 528 cage so that's the only one i have for now as well as i don't have any use for a ikea detolf as i am using a rack system for my rescue (encase you're confused i am referring to my rescue i run). So if you're looking for appropriate enclosures, there are two videos i usually send people to. Victoria Raechel and Vanilla Ham Ham as they have dedicated good cage videos. I'm reviewing negative cages due to how many beginner pet owners use amazon/petco/petsmart reviews to determine which cage they'll buy. Due to how many bad enclosures there are online and how many positive reviews you see of those bad cages and how cheap these cages are to purchase, that's why you'll see more bad enclosures being reviewed than good. Cause if i ever did make the kaytee super crittertrail review, i'd most likely still return the enclosure as i do not wish to use it when i have my prevue enclosures. Thank you for understanding. :)

      We can only assume they'd like to know how to better improve. We can't know their true motives without the facts. But I am disappointed however as i feel they never properly tested out their cage or asked places like the Pipsqueakery or the California Hamster Association to come test out their new cage and give feedback. So in a way this was done poorly by them and they should follow Kaytee's example and reach out to people next time before releasing a product for sale. So we will see this cage being featured on the market this year and it will most likely remain till their sales deplete or they decide to pull it down for another one.

    Semi unrelated
    I used to use the small ferplast cage
    I was uninformed, it was my first cage and it met the 12*12*12 that companies advertise
    Then after watching TH-cam videos I found out that the wheel and cage were both too small
    So for Christmas (about 2 months later) I asked for the Prevue 528 and the 6.5 silent spinner
    I have two Russian Dwarfs and they are on the smaller side, so I have the 6.5 inch wheel
    I noticed that in the ferplast cage, my hamsters had started bar chewing and the less docile one had been ‘kicked out’ he was sleeping in the corner of the wire level where there was no bedding
    Once I upgrade the cage they both seemed happier
    The more docile one chooses to sleep in a hut I have on the platform (where he keeps all his food) and the less docile one burrows like no tomorrow
    After I had found out that my cage was unsuitable, I changed it as quickly as I could
    It’s fine to make a mistake, as long as you fix it when you find out it’s wrong
    *sorry I rambled
    **Also the more docile one is Noodle and the less docile one is Reginald

    I finally found your review of this cage! Lol
    I commented in another video asking what you thought about this cage. Idk why it didn't come up in my feed last time though :-/ but everything you said, was basically what i thought as well. I adopted my hamster Izzy and she came with a bin cage. She came from a very loving home, where the girl had lots of hamster knowledge.. She even taught me some new stuff! 😆. Anyway, after that i never felt the same about hamster cages. Izzy has since past, as she was over 3. But she was the most loving, beautiful winter white ❤. She lived a great life. I enjoy your videos even though i no longer have a hamster. I have a bunny currently. Anyway i know this is an old video, but i didn't know about your channel before or this review. I still appreciate it though. In the future i will probably adopt another hammy🤗

    Ooh I wish I could upload a photo of my Ferplast. My boy has bridges, a multichambered trixie hide, a carrot hide, a sand bath, platforms and a 28cm wheel, which fits nicely into the end of the cage, with loads of bedding (8ish inches). The cage cost about £100, but you can get bins the same size for £15-£20. It’s so easy to set up correctly, and it doesn’t have to be expensive, I found a 28cm plastic silent wheel for £7, and it’s brilliant! His wooden wheel was £21, but it just goes to show that providing what hams need is absolutely doable and is not going to bankrupt anyone.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I run a rescue who uses shelving units to store enclosures. Ikea detolf is more like a personal cage due to the size of it. We also need to DIY a lid and it's unfortunately not adequate for the amount of space it takes up and will not fit on our shelving unit. Other channels like Erin's Animals and Victoria Rachel use them or have talked about them.
