- Today's intake is from a surrender transfer of another rescue after the owners had to move to a place that didn't allow rodents & contacted multiple Rescues. The family bought what was on the shelf at their local pet store, not knowing the damage it could cause towards such a fragile critter. It's been sometime since we've seen a dwarf inside a vertical cage, so in this video I go over the dangers while educating those not aware of inappropriate care while showing off Prism's new setup while at the rescue, while showing her off.

Please always supervise ANY kids with hamsters! My friends girlfriends little brothers misplaced his Dwarf Hamster and end up killing it by sitting on it because they carelessly did not look and find the hamster before sitting on the couch. YESS munchie! Hamsters are VERY fragile delicate animals 🥺❤️✝️🙏🏼

Poor little girl 😔 such a shame she didn't live long enough for her happy ever after, but at least she knew good care at the end.
Also, there is a very good explanation in the Old World why one shouldn't keep hamsters in small cages. This is a figurative comparison. A hamster in a small cage is comparable to a human person who lives in a small bathroom.
Poor sweet little girl, it's upsetting to hear that she passed but a comfort knowing she got to enjoy much better care in the end and that she had someone willing to try and save her.

Awe geez... she past so soon. Yet I am so so so happy she was with you guys before her passing it's sad she couldn't go to a good home yet she may rest in peace knowing she was taking car of for her final months. Sleep well and may you borrow and run so far where ever you are little one. 😔❤️💔
I am so glad a new video just popped up, I was literally just watching your old videos! You are one of my favorite TH-camrs of all time! I dont even own hamsters, just have 1 single, unneutered, extremely spoiled, male fancy mouse :)

@@TAYLOR8mm It's just a term used for domesticated house mice. Since of course, not all house mice are actually domestically bred. So while they are in most simple terms, the same species, it's important to use the term fancy in mouse groups to differentiate between wild house mice and domesticated "fancy" house mice.
@@TAYLOR8mm “fancy” mice in the pet store industry just means not white with red eyes. They have a larger variety of coat colors, lengths, and textures. But yes, they’re the same species. Pet stores mark the “prettier” ones as “fancy” so they can mark up the price. The standard ones are sold as feeders 99% of the time.
@@Cyber7856: I agree. Pet stores use the term incorrectly. Originally, "fancy" meant hobby. Animals intended for the mouse fancy instead of wild mice.

The price of that cage shocked me. My hamster is in a 600 square inch bin cage which cost me ~40$ to set up. Why would you pay so much for something so awful?!
The pet stores are evil and cruel selling these TINY toy cages. They should be selling big bins that have lids with proper air ventilation...
I'm really sorry for your loss. I just wanted to say that my dwarf (who also had red eyes) had something wrong with his eyes too. One of them started to bulge and when I took him to the vet I had to apply cream to make the swelling go down. It did get better, but then the same thing happened to his other eye a month or so later and I had to take him in again. His cage always was and still is flat with plenty of bedding (it's a 700 square inch tank with nothing to climb on), there's never been any height he could have fallen off and I still have no idea what caused it to this day. He's over two now and he's doing well but he is completely blind. I wonder if there's any correlation with the eye colour or species of hamster because someone I know also had the same issue with a red-eyed dwarf hamster. Anyway, I wish you and your animals all the best!
My oldest rat rat, Durban (rip), had the same thing suddenly happen to one of his eyes. Suddenly noticed that it was bulging out a bit more than it really should have when he got an infection from a scratched eye. Also had to apply cream to him daily, but his eyes were black not red. It turned out to be a pituitary tumor (brain tumor) causing the pressure in his skullf tonpush on hos eyes, when the vet watched the way he walked he knew immediately. With the kind Durban had, the problems started in his back legs and then moved on to the rest of him just before the end had to come... I'd thought it was arthritis until the diagnosis came. It's just something he had his whole life, it barely affected him until he was super old.
If it's a tumor, I wonder if the species is really prone to them?

@@rebeccaclock3858 Thank you, i love all my critters but Durban was a special one... The vet is Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic in Indianapolis, Indiana. They're very good at what they do, though it's difficult getting timely appointments without it being an emergency these days and they dont allow people inside the building due to their Covid restrictions. They always make time to see animals like Durban who need immediate care, but there's still a (much shorter) wait even then.
I actually took him to another (closer) vet for the end, called Hillview, as seizures had set in after his long fight against the tumor and I wasnt going to leave him suffering. They're the vet I used to go to, but they lost their small animal doctor and hadn't filled her position again yet while Durban was dealing with everything. They're less specialized and i think i still prefer A&E in Indy for more intense vetcare, but they make up for that in situations like mine. I felt cared for when I rushed him in after calling in a panic and the assistants who helped him along clearly cared for the animals. They were very loving with him. They even went to the trouble of sending a card on the month anniversary of his passing, which I hadn't expected for an animal so small out here. Its hard to find people that look at rats they way they did and harder still to find people that value them as much as a dog or cat, the exotic vets out here are just wonderful.

I am so sorry that happened when she I know how that feels because my little hamster Robert passed away as well on New Year's Eve before 2022 but your rescue will always come and support and then I'm going to change

I have friends with hamsters and am always trying to improve their care and would love a short >10 minute video to send them to explain everything they need to know

Also I have to ask - I rescued a male syrian hamster who came with the normal kaytee food. I almost immediately switched him to higgins sunburst with added black soldier fly larvae after giving him time to acclimate to the new diet. But now I want to ask - is the regular hamster/gerbil diet crap or should I mix it into the higgins for more variety?
P.S. "soldier worms" are very high in protein, calcium, and other vitamins. I can't afford lab blocks with trash ingredients. A 1lb bag of soldier worms at walmart was $7. A 5lb bag on amazon is $28 (doing that next time!) My young campbell's russian dwarf girl, Cannoli, young b/w syrian boi, Harry Hamlin, and 5yo gerbil, Curmudgeonly, all really like them :)
When I move no matter what I would refuse a house if they don't accept pets they come as package my 12 pets 🤩 my 4 cats and 6 rats and 2 hampsters they my everything

My sons father did that to the hamster we had i left him two 3.5 months later the landlords son reached out to me asking if I was gonna come get the hamster I asked how long he'd been down there he said 2 months I asked if anyone had been feeding him he said no I rushed there with a friend shockingly he was still alive very greasy from being so dehydrated I filled his water instead of licking it he was sucking it. One of the saddest things I've seen he lived out his life at a friend's house. As I was staying at a friend's house trying to find a home for myself and my son. Now 11 years later my son and my twin girls have a huge home two flemish giant rabbits a syrian hamster and a 55 gallon tank with a bunch fish.
What did the vet say regarding the hamster who had her tail removed? Can you do an update on that one?
Luz got an update via IG. She unfortunately had heart disease and passed away. We were devastated when it happened but thankful our vets preformed a Necropsy and we got answers.
My hamster had no interest in sand baths. I wanted so bad to see her play in it!
I have a 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter both of my children when wanting to handle their rodents really meaning my rodents my sweet hamsters and my mice what I do is I dry out my bathtub I take out any harmful chemicals so like soaps things like that I take them off the sides of the tub I plug up the drain I put towels down and one by one each of my children will get interaction time with whichever animal of their choosing my children do help me feed them and they also help me do animal clean outs when it's time I have three separate cages of mice and I have three female Syrian hamsters

Munchie I know you have a lot going on currently but it has been a while since you have done a personal pet update video. Can you please make a updated video of your personal pets?
I don't think I've ever had a personal pet update video to begin with. But Ill see if I wish to make one in the future. There's still a ton of stuff I want to make that I can't at this time.

Perhaps the hamster health problems you mentioned at the end were caused by diabetes. Incorrectly selected food may well lead to such consequences. Although, in addition to the tendency to diabetes, hybrids of Campbell hamsters and Djungarian hamsters can have a bunch of other congenital diseases. Therefore, in Europe it is forbidden to deliberately cross Djungarian hamsters and Campbell's hamsters, although the animals turn out to be beautiful in appearance, they sometimes do not live long even with excellent care.
With all do respect, the vets looked over the eye and determined it was a past injury and not diabetes. Lab work was done that would not indicate anything abnormal. My vets do test for diabetes, as we've had only a couple with diabetes or kidney disease. I understand you're coming from good intentions, but it's a bit overwhelming to see a wall of multiple text about everything I've discussed.

I sincerely admire you .Of course, the veterinarian who directly examines the animals gets final decision ,not for the viewer of the video who simply knows about different cases in general terms. Only I know, not by hearsay, that the hamster you are showing is not a purebred djungarian or Campbell's hamster, but a hybrid of both species. That is, in the pedigree of this hamster, hamsters of both species are added, he is not a 100% carrier of genes of one species. I fight against the creation and breeding of such hybrids, do not be offended by me Munchie. My activity in the Old World is directed only at people who are ignorant breeders and who breed animals ,without studying animal genetics .Such hybrids have more health problems than purebred representatives of two species from which such hybrids are derived. I do not know what kind of food for Russian or dwarf hamsters exists in the New World. In the Old World there is a mish-mash invented by a German hamster breeder. It can be prepared in this way
1)2 kilograms of Vercel-Laga's "Big Parakeet Prestige" food for parakeets,
2)500 grams of a four-grain mixture, green buckwheat, barley, rye and wheat,
3)300 grams of dried insects and hamarus,
4)250 grams of degu food,
5)another 250 grams of sesame seeds, millet, hemp.
6) 100-250 grams of nuts and/or peanuts, another 300 grams of sunflower seeds and 100-150 grams of pumpkin seeds, and 100- 200 grams of feed corn
From ready-made feeds in the Old World, one can buy "banny nature dwarf hamster dream expert" or "jr farm for dwarf hamsters".And of course, great care is needed in relation to succulent food: All berries and fruits should be excluded.
And white and green vegetables, as well as pumpkin and yellow bell peppers should be included in the diet from vegetables, and the rest of the yellow and red vegetables should be excluded. However, the addition of fodder beet and and some carrot in granules of ready-made feed for dwarf hamsters is harmless.
I don't like the term pet hobby. It shouldn't be looked to as a hobby. It's taking care of another life. It's adopting a family member.
Honestly, how can people look at the shape of that cage and think it's suitable? It's a completely different shape from them, they cant even use 2/3rds of that space! Hamsters are short and long! I mean you wouldn't keep chickens in an aviary, and you wouldn't keep a GSD in a highrise apartment.
As Munchie has said in the past, hamsters do not wish to live up there in the sky, they desire to live on the ground or below in their burrows...
Hamsters are animals that should not be bought as pets for small children. These animals are suitable for adults who are too busy at work during the day and do not mind spending time contemplating a pet doing something funny with a smart look in a beautiful, large aviary. As far as walking balls for hamsters go, this isn't the first time I've come across the stupidity of pet product manufacturers. If the hamsters have a good size aviary for permanent residence and an even larger paddock to run, then no owner will buy walking hamster balls. In fact, no more than half an hour of walking in this ball is allowed, while making sure that the ball does not hit the furniture. Then, some hamsters don't like walking in balloons. A useless invention, but these balls don't get off the production line. Do pet product manufacturers really know so little about the nature of hamsters? After all, there is so much information about how these animals should be treated.
A more harmful invention is the hamster harness. I hope no one buys harnesses for hamsters.I think they can only please sadists.However,harnesses and walking balls are on the shelves of pet stores around the world.
The bin cagecage LOOKS like a 106 qt bin that its 435 sq inches from the bottom base (interior) so it’s a bit below the minimum,but if the hamster doesn’t show signs of stress then it’s fine,also I have that cage and with 4 inches of bedding its around 453 sq inches

@@ShwintyKat i know it died,and I actually don’t agree that 450 sq inches it’s the exact bare minimum,since it’s a very very specific number, I think the bare minimum should be like AROUND. 450 sq inches
@@HYDROCARBON_XD Frankly if you measure like Machine does three inches above the bottom at bedding level, the 106 quart bin does meet the 450 square inches recommended minimum. I prefer giving my hamster the biggest bin I can find in stock at my local stores. I found a 200 quart giant bin at Home Depot after having acquired in the past there a 116 quart bin. The giant 200 quart is over 600 square inches and the 116 quart is over 500 square inches. Unfortunately in the past my local Walmart's largest bin in stock is the 106 quart bin, although lately my local Walmart stocks a larger 120 quart bin... Shop around folks, buy the biggest bin you can find locally... Bins do slope on the vertical sides and are unlike aquariums that don't slope... Several years ago 360 square inches was the recommended minimum in the USA and the 90 quart bin met that standard. Today the 90 quart does not meet the 450 square inches miminum, but it is better than these TINY toy cages pet stores sell that don't even have half of the old minimum recommendation... Ikea sells a Billy bookshelf extension and a Billy bookshelf glass shelf which has sadly 448 square inches, just shy of the recommended minimum. I am willing to ignore its slight shortage... Oh so close...

The hamster is a clear hybrid of the Campbell's hamster and the Dzungarian.Purebred dzhungars are not yellow, i.e., dzhungars do not even have a yellow stripe on their backs, and Campbell's hamsters do not have such a physique and muzzle shape.Djungarian hamsters never have red eyes. And that means the new owner of this rescued hamster should keep the animal on a strict diet.

Please, look through the information about dzungarian hamsters , Campbell's hamsters and their hybrids, it seems there is a lot of such information on the internet. Breeding "Russian" dwarf hamsters, both Campbell and Dzungarian , is a very difficult task. Representatives of both species carry various kinds of defects at the gene level, and this is not only diabetes. For example, a white variety of Djungarian hamsters is prone to oncology. And the orange-colored Campbells age early, sometimes they can suddenly die, especially the fragile health of the Campbells with red eyes. Sometime in the 20th century, when hamsters gained popularity as pets,breeders deliberately hybridized both of these species, very beautiful individuals were obtained, with very fragile health, and female producers had problems associated with childbirth. The hybridization of these two species has been banned and breeders in good reputation deliberately do not breed hybrids at the moment.Alas, I was not surprised when I watched this video to the end. I was unpleasantly surprised that on the American continent someone hybridized Campbell's hamsters and jungars, or / and breeded their hybrids, using already existing hybriding hamsters .
Sometimes it happens that pet stores contain together representatives of two different spices of dwarf hamsters, Campbell's hamsters and Djungarian hamsters, they interbreed and such hamsters are born, as in this video clip. If someone came across such a hamster, it should be kept according to very strict recommendations, but under no circumstances should you pick up a pair for it. Potentially sick pets should not be bred. At the same time, be prepared that even with ideal care for an animal, this animal can become seriously ill or suddenly die very young.
I. E, if you have a hybrid hamster, you can lose it very quickly.
These are very beautiful hamsters, they are also called tangerines. They are colored yellow-orange or have a yellow-orange stripe on their backs. ( the color may be solid or in the form of a yellow-orange stripe on the back). Sometimes hamsters with the tangerine (orange) colour,a.k.a.tangerines ,have a pink or red color of the eyes that is not typical for Djungarian hamsters. Red or pink eye color occurs in some Campbell's hamsters, those that have been bred in captivity.The tangerines also shed like Djungarian hamsters, changing their color as they grow older . (for Campbell's hamsters, such a molt that completely changes color of animals is absolutely not typical.Real, purebred Campbell's hamsters do not change their color when the air temperature drops to a critical level, unlike Djungarian hamsters and some hybrids of the two species. )
At the same time, these hamsters also differ in the structure of the body and muzzle from Campbell's hamsters. So, if you see such a hamster who is similar to the one shown in this video, then you can safely identify it as a hybrid and this animal could appear as a result of illegal breeding. The mortality rate in such hamsters is very high, so self-respecting dwarf hamster breeders do not breed " tangerines "and they are found only in unscrupulous or deeply ignorant breeders.
hey munchies maybe next time don't do surgery on an elderly hamster
Hey king, maybe next time don't question the animal care of someone who's done it much longer than you have and quite literally runs a dedicated rescue.
Our vet determines if an animal is strong enough for surgery. Like with any surgeries there is a risk, but this involved the eye so it was trickier. Our vet has declined surgery on several animals before, based off of condition and age. If they're unhealthy, they don't go under. We've spent several months working with Prism, meds and treatment, to have her finally go in for surgery, to not make it out. She was with us for sometime before the decision was made to remove her eye.
Instead of approaching it like you did, please next time ask us why this happened, and to not judge based on the vaguest detail, which we choose to disclose to the public. Like our vets told us when we lost her, it's rare to have this happen and we tried to give her the best quality of life, despite the outcome.
I do also want to say that if she didn't get surgery, her eye would have potentially killed her. We went with what the vet recommended was the best option based on our vets experience and knowledge. This is the vet who's put several of our animals under for surgery, that have come back and lived. Because you heard one negative outcome, doesn't mean that the decision was wrong by our vets. So please, think about the entire process going into this. This was not just her going blind from an impact, her eye was ruptured and gradually getting worse.
