Today i saw someone at petsmart getting a hamster and they were getting a really bad critter trail. THE GIRL WAS LITERALLY LIKE 5 YEARS OLD! and i think she was getting a robo- which is the hardest to take care of. Pet smart makes me madddd
I probably would have too! Which makes it totally unfair. Most of the time it's not even the consumers fault when they buy these cages, half the time they're misinformed and end up buying them.
I’m 10 and a year ago when I had a ham I did a ton of research before getting one! He was in a tiny tails because my parents didn’t understand why he needed a big cage but we soon got a bin cage for him! I now have a different hammy.

@CONNOR PARKS right? Those who knew proper hamster care has somewhat limited options... sth else not specifically made for hamster. Must sort through and stay away fro small hamster wheels and soft plastic hamster furnitures, small cages etc that is everywhere on the market. And then for proper cage you still gotta DIY, buy furniture (ikea detolf or whatever), bin, or a small handful of good hamster cage brands (like niteangel), or the kaytee super habitat (idk the extra large one) savic or sth
I personally bought a hamster a month ago and bought a small cage because I didn’t research before hand, the lady told my just to connect them to other cages for more space. I am now building her a cage that will have 1,152 sq in of floor space, the cage I have her in now is a temporary enclosure of two ten gallons linked up. (I upgraded her from the first cage to a ten gallon and then just a few days ago linked a second one) people really need to start hiring employees that have more knowledge the woman I talked to had a hamster herself and said she had a bin cage when I asked if the store bought cages were okay she said yes. I know she was only doing her job and this was mostly my fault for not doing research before hand and I’m racked with guilt but this is just no okay.
People suggest not manufacture these cages in the first place because it can lead people to just assume that the store knows what they’re talking about or that the employee has more knowledge than they actually do.
Yeah and it's sad that people will bash you for trying to tell them the way their pet is living is inhumane or even if they are trying to buy cages like this, especially if it's in a respectful way
I hate it when people say, “it’s just a hamster, it doesn’t care what it lives in.” A hamster is a living breathing animal that deserves to live a healthy happy life. Yes, it’s true that hamsters do not perceive their surroundings the same way human beings do, but that being said, hamsters do know when they are being harmed and forcing a hamster to live in this cage is abusive towards your pet.

At first I had a tiny tales cage because they sold it at the store but then I realized how tiny it was so I got a bigger and better cage. (I used a large aquarium)
My friend and I just did the same thing! Took a clear plastic bin and drilled holes in it! I wish we did that first. It’s just way too tiny and heartbreaking. But mine has wet tail and I don’t think he’s drinking the medicine so I’m sad lol
DEFINITELY just waiting for a kid to yell out “MOM I WANT A HAMSTER” after seeing that in the store... and an uninformed mom or dad agreeing and getting this. The poor hamster will be in this dinosaur forgotten after a month, or worse, the kid starts playing with the dinosaur while the hamster is still in there. :/

me too. i’ve wanted one since i was six and read books about hamster care but my parents still didn’t let me have one. now i have the ability to learn about proper care instead of outdated books from the 90s and i’m getting my first hamster soon.
This is actually so heartbreaking to me that a hamster will be stuck inside this cage for the rest of it’s life. No hamster should have to survive in a small enclosed space such as this, it’s abuse.
Arthoria yes, she might have misused the word abuse, but if you can’t afford the pet, don’t get the pet. If you can’t provide a proper sized cage because you say it costs too much, try bin cages that can be $20-$30.
Arthoria I stand by what I said. If you cannot afford to correctly provide the proper care for a hamster then you shouldn’t be owning one at all. It’s animal abuse for a living creature to be kept in an enclosure like that.
@Arthoria bin cages are cheaper than this, they can be 20-40 dollars when you put a mesh top into it so they don’t get out and this dinosaur cage is 75 dollars. also other people have pointed this out, but if you don’t have the money to properly care for an animal and give them a happy life and a large enclosure, then don’t get that animal.

What happens if your hamster doesn't have a wheel. My hamster is in his smaller cage(regular cage like hers from the beginning ) because the bigger one is broken. He escaped once from the big one and once in the small one when the pet area wasn't locked. Anyways, my hamster cannot have a wheel I his smaller cage so I'm unsure what to do.
I got my hamster a critter trail/kaytee cage for my Syrian hamster and I was uncomfortable from the start luckily my freind had a cage and some supplies from her hamster coconut who sadly passed away And smoky is a happy hamster now!!🙃
I have a unsuitable hamster cage and I spent alot of money on it, im hoping to get a new cage for him soon , im saving up some money for him ! He already has a sand bath and can borrow though, so I just need a big cage and some more hideouts and toys:)
@@c4itlynn157 Just another idea, I housed my hamster and now my gerbils in aquarium tanks, which you can get on sale for $1 per gallon during the pet stores semi annual events, or other good sales. I just got a brand new 40 gallon breeder for $50 and it's great!

I was about to say the same. It's made to be appealing to children but within a week the parents and child (assuming this child is old enough to even clean the enclosure) are going to be sick of it, leading to half hearted cleaning and in the long run the hamsters most likely either going to get sick or be given away.

My birdcage certainly isn’t “cute” or “pretty” but it’s large and functional and fun for my quaker and the ropes across my ceiling that hold mats and toys are not “cute” or “fun” but Fate loves them so I do not care what people say about my unconventional life😂

Mine doesn't even go in his hideout?! I bought a module thingy above ground and he made it his homebase. He totally forgot about the conventional one and I eventually took it out to free the space it occupied since it was completely abandoned. My hammy is in a 50L tank with plenty of bedding and floor space to dig, but mister loves storing his food, pooping and sleeping in an above ground transparent module... Go figure 😂
Facts! Just rescued five abused hermit crabs the other day. Even I know HOW TO CARE FOR THEM ENTIRELY and hermit crabs have much more complicated needs than hampsters!!!
It's still shocking to see how bad animal care in the USA is. German hamstercare is great, I got all the information and a 1m² enclosure for my baby. Even in our petstores they use proper wooden bedding and no pink paper stuff. And it's still animal cruelty. I really don't get how this can still be legal. Gladly those dinosaurs aren't allowed to be selled here.

This is actually terrifying. Imagine living- *LIVING* - in the skytubes at Chuck E. Cheese's. Imagine being a little kid with no realization that your little friend can die if you don't propely take care of it. One day you approach your big plastic dinosaur but cant find your hamster. Weeks later you finally find him: curled up at the bottom of the awful smelling dinosaur, dead. Like, if you would rather have a big plastic dinosaur instead of a boring box with a healthy hamster, you shouldn't own a hamster.

@@KL96012 Uh. A young child CAN pet a dog without pulling out fur. It comes down to parenting. I had guinea pigs as a child and my mom was very sure to make sure I was careful

i work at petsmart and i always try to have people NOT buy the hamster cages and recommend getting a 20 gallon fish tank instead (bc it’s the same price as one of the small ones) but people always are like “no it’s okay i’ll just get the cage” AND IT MAKES ME HHHH but yeah working at petsmart is hell ❤️

I recently asked my dad to buy a hamster cage before we got a new hamster and he said okay. So I was out when my dad messaged me “I bought a new cage” and I got exited and went straight to home. When I got into the house I saw my dad smiling standing next to that dinosaur cage(he had already built it) and I was like DAAAAAD! wHAt Is THAt?! I really liked it for looks but I knew it wasn’t suitable for a hamster so I didn’t think twice. Long story short we returned it and bought a large tank, for less money...
As a rabbit owner, I've never really thought about hamsters, but I've seen what these companies advertise as a 'rabbit cage' - which is usually what we purchase as a LITTER BOX. This is hugely opening my eyes about some of the other critters out there, and know even my sister was guilty of doing cages like crittertrails, even if it was 2 or 3 cages hooked up together. These cages are geared towards the littles who get these 'first pet' animals, who want a cool cage, rather than a proper size cage with all of the necessities they need to live happy. I thought rabbits had dangerous cages made for them to sucker in new bunny parents, but I now suspect hamsters have it even worse!
Unfortunately petsmart doesn’t make the cages for the most part- I’m sure they have some that are them though- they just have the ones available from other ‘pet’ companies. Wish more companies with large cages were partnered with these pet stores, not sure which side that’s on though. It’s frustrating
I was never interested in these cages- ( as a kid ) and my mom said I must get a big cage if I get a hamster- she loves animals and wants to treat it right. Seeing all of these comments with their parents forcing them to use these types of cages are just horrible and make me feel so grateful!
When you showed us the video of the tiny tails house cage in the start of the video I have that exact cage and that cage is meant for dwarf hamsters. I have a dwarf hamster and she loves her cage. She loves it. She loves to run. she loves the wheel, she loves going to the second floor and acting like I can’t see her. She loves it.
Unfortunately the enclosure isn't made for dwarf hamsters, dwarf hamsters while yes smaller still have the same needs as other hamster species. They are very active and the tiny tales enclosures do not provide any room for all of the enrichment they need. It's easy to think they may love their enclosure but those small enclosures do not allow them to perform any natural behaviours.
I wish! I honestly don’t know how though since I’d like it to be quite large, and a decent price so I don’t know if that would be possible to do since shipping is expensive

Victoria Raechel you could design something that can fold closed for shipping, and latches to its full size, and a plastic or vinyl base, a correctly sized wheel, etc. Even posting links to instructions to make your own from free furniture.
They do care about something else though. You moneeey lol. I seriously feel like pet stores should stop because 80% of the stuff they sell are bad for animals and 10% is good if you supervise them
I work at PetSmart, I refuse to sell these or ANY inhumane habitat. If people want to get pets, they need to fully understand their needs. They aren't decorations.
@@daisyverhoeff9095 our store only sells fish and we host cats from the shelter for adoption. I love animals. All of them. There's so much people dont think about, or know when impulsively buying even fish.. Most are receptive, some are not. The ones that listen- half the time they do the right thing and get the humane options, the other half they they decide against getting a fish.. Bettas especially. Unfortunately most of the time, when people come in to buy stuff for their new pets, they already have them. One lady tried to buy a critter carrier for baby beardies or crickets.. as a home... for her hamster. She didn't want to spend anymore money on a proper home, they already had it. I talked her into at LEAST buying a 20 gallon tank... and while I know that's not enough I advised her to check for larger enclosures on Facebook market place, and if she found one that was safe and large enough, we'd happily return her purchase. I still dont feel she cared enough at all.. I hope that hamster is ok.

My friend and I just did the same thing! Took a clear plastic bin and drilled holes in it! I wish we did that first. It’s just way too tiny and heartbreaking. But mine has wet tail and I don’t think he’s drinking the medicine so I’m sad lol
DEFINITELY just waiting for a kid to yell out “MOM I WANT A HAMSTER” after seeing that in the store... and an uninformed mom or dad agreeing and getting this. The poor hamster will be in this dinosaur forgotten after a month, or worse, the kid starts playing with the dinosaur while the hamster is still in there. :/

@Arthoria bin cages are cheaper than this, they can be 20-40 dollars when you put a mesh top into it so they don’t get out and this dinosaur cage is 75 dollars. also other people have pointed this out, but if you don’t have the money to properly care for an animal and give them a happy life and a large enclosure, then don’t get that animal.

What happens if your hamster doesn't have a wheel. My hamster is in his smaller cage(regular cage like hers from the beginning ) because the bigger one is broken. He escaped once from the big one and once in the small one when the pet area wasn't locked. Anyways, my hamster cannot have a wheel I his smaller cage so I'm unsure what to do.

I was about to say the same. It's made to be appealing to children but within a week the parents and child (assuming this child is old enough to even clean the enclosure) are going to be sick of it, leading to half hearted cleaning and in the long run the hamsters most likely either going to get sick or be given away.

My birdcage certainly isn’t “cute” or “pretty” but it’s large and functional and fun for my quaker and the ropes across my ceiling that hold mats and toys are not “cute” or “fun” but Fate loves them so I do not care what people say about my unconventional life😂

He totally forgot about the conventional one and I eventually took it out to free the space it occupied since it was completely abandoned. My hammy is in a 50L tank with plenty of bedding and floor space to dig, but mister loves storing his food, pooping and sleeping in an above ground transparent module... Go figure 😂
Facts! Just rescued five abused hermit crabs the other day. Even I know HOW TO CARE FOR THEM ENTIRELY and hermit crabs have much more complicated needs than hampsters!!!

It's still shocking to see how bad animal care in the USA is. German hamstercare is great, I got all the information and a 1m² enclosure for my baby. Even in our petstores they use proper wooden bedding and no pink paper stuff. And it's still animal cruelty. I really don't get how this can still be legal. i work at petsmart and i always try to have people NOT buy the hamster cages and recommend getting a 20 gallon fish tank instead (bc it’s the same price as one of the small ones) but people always are like “no it’s okay i’ll just get the cage” AND IT MAKES ME HHHH but yeah working at petsmart is hell ❤️
actually a 20 gallon tank is still too small unfortunately! where i live the welfare standard dictates at least 75gal for tank enclosures

I recently asked my dad to buy a hamster cage before we got a new hamster and he said okay. So I was out when my dad messaged me “I bought a new cage” and I got exited and went straight to home. When I got into the house I saw my dad smiling standing next to that dinosaur cage(he had already built it) and I was like DAAAAAD! wHAt Is THAt?! As a rabbit owner, I've never really thought about hamsters, but I've seen what these companies advertise as a 'rabbit cage' - which is usually what we purchase as a LITTER BOX. This is hugely opening my eyes about some of the other critters out there, and know even my sister was guilty of doing cages like crittertrails, even if it was 2 or 3 cages hooked up together. These cages are geared towards the littles who get these 'first pet' animals, who want a cool cage, rather than a proper size cage with all of the necessities they need to live happy. I thought rabbits had dangerous cages made for them to sucker in new bunny parents, but I now suspect hamsters have it even worse!

When you showed us the video of the tiny tails house cage in the start of the video I have that exact cage and that cage is meant for dwarf hamsters. I have a dwarf hamster and she loves her cage. She loves it. She loves to run. she loves the wheel, she loves going to the second floor and acting like I can’t see her. She loves it.
Unfortunately the enclosure isn't made for dwarf hamsters, dwarf hamsters while yes smaller still have the same needs as other hamster species. They are very active and the tiny tales enclosures do not provide any room for all of the enrichment they need. It's easy to think they may love their enclosure but those small enclosures do not allow them to perform any natural behaviours.
Victoria should come out with her own brand of cages because then everyone’s hamster would just be better

I love animals. All of them. There's so much people dont think about, or know when impulsively buying even fish..
Most are receptive, some are not. The ones that listen- half the time they do the right thing and get the humane options, the other half they they decide against getting a fish.. Bettas especially.
Unfortunately most of the time, when people come in to buy stuff for their new pets, they already have them.
One lady tried to buy a critter carrier for baby beardies or crickets.. as a home... for her hamster.
She didn't want to spend anymore money on a proper home, they already had it. I talked her into at LEAST buying a 20 gallon tank... and while I know that's not enough I advised her to check for larger enclosures on Facebook market place, and if she found one that was safe and large enough, we'd happily return her purchase.
I still dont feel she cared enough at all.. I hope that hamster is ok.
