    Being a knife guy, if I were a Navy Seal and the military issued me that knife, I would be stoked, beautiful one tool option, what a tank! As a backpacker , I carry a Lapander, a tomahawk and a bushcraft knife that has 1/8" steel. Excellent review, beautiful forest.

    As an owner of this knife I tell my tale....So I am usually The Camp Leader for my family. The last time I we went out I was stuck in the tent (stomach issue) so my wife took charge. Wife had this knife on her belt. She collected and processed all the firewood and processed small pieces to start the base of our camp fire. She beat this thing like red headed step child (sorry gingers) when she was done this knife was still hair popping sharp. I'm a believer. Worth every penny

    I've owned and used my 5050 and 5150 for awhile now... not a single complaint about either of them.
    The 5050 is a reliable tank and I have zero concerns with its ability to do everything a knife should do, plus things only a hammer, axe, or prybar should be expected to do.
    I own/owned many Striders, Busses, Beckers, ZT's, Medfords, Bark Rivers, etc... the 5050 and 5150 meets or exceeds all of them, and the elmax is possibly the best all-around steel available today.
    Compared to most of the knives mentioned, the 5050 (and 5150) are a bargain.
    I modded my 5050 a bit - I ground the glassbreaker down to a ~4mm exposed pommel that is parallel with the g10, looks good and increased its bush capabilities a little (and I have no doubt it'll still break anything breakable).
    After some hard use the bead-blast finish wasn't perfect, so it spent a few minutes on the belt sander then some hand work for a nice satin finish and sharp spine.
    Its a little on the heavy side for "bushcraft", but if I could have only one knife...

    Who's ever gonna use a knife to the point of the elmax offering an outcome of performance LOL ...Its like
    "Man I'm sure glad I had that Elmax steel cause that dragon would have kicked my butt, the Becker might have went dull after stabbing through them Dragon scales"😂😂😅😅

    One more thing about that sheath...it is reversible. Undo those four screws and swap the webbing to the other side and it is good for left side carry.

    Good review yet again Aaron, thanks.
    It'd be nice to see a couple Bark River Elmax knives reviewed at some point too.
    I know they're mostly intended for a different purpose, other than a tactical-type application, but would still be nice to see them in action and getting the famous Gideon's Tactical, in depth review :-)
    Take care.

    In this case I know of what I speak, you get what you pay for. For those who serve and are privileged to own the 5050 or the 5150 they are workhorses and take if need be tremendous abuse. I've know guys that haven't needed to touch the blade for several months during (we're always training) training. Even after a hard mission these blades never fail. That being said these knives are not general civilian survival, bush-craft or camp knives. Bottom Line: they're the toughest knives you'll ever find and they'll never let you down and whatever meets either end of these knives will suffer greatly. Happy 4th of July y'all.

    Excellent review you always nail it to be honest. All the important stuff you have already talked about those things. I wondering if you can reccommend a GOOD folding knife? My favourite used to be SOG Visionary I & II but those two knives are discontinued and I want G10 on my scales and at least VG10 steel. I will probarbly buy this knife as well for my dad. Thank you, Martin

    Hey Aaron, great review as usual. Even though that is a sweet blade (love the rust resistant properties, but I live in Arizona), the price is just a bit too steep even for Elmax. I seriously appreciate the review though! It's always cool to see different gear, and find out new styles/companies/features that I might otherwise not be aware of. Thanks.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No joke it is a high price, but I contacted a few custom knife makers ask if that price is reasonable for an Elmax blade this thick and they agreed it was a fair price. Costs a lot to buy, heat treat, and eats belts when grinding.

    • @rowdyron4111
      @rowdyron4111 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I meant the price was too steep for me. For Elmax it's probably in the sweet spot for the reasons you mentioned. (Already have one of those Esee 5's!) Thanks man.

    I have a BK2 and i really like the handle. It has a good edge and i really enjoy using it. Now i was interested in to getting the BK2 in to more exotic steel version. Do you think that this knife will be the one ? I do some chopping with my BK2.

    Send it to the gauntlet!! We need more gauntlet reviews and final conclusion when you get it back. This knife definitely speaks to me more than the Esee 5. But I'd take the Esee 5 and BK over this simply because of price.

    Hey, have you ever thought of reviewing the peltonen m95 knife? It is a military style knife used by finnish defence forces but also a great camp knife. Carbon steel, flat ground or high sabre, 3 sheath options (leather, kydex, plastic). It's made by fiskars, i think.

    off the First Edge website: "FirstEdge™ innovates superior quality, highly functional products that solve real-life problems. Our founders partnered with U.S. Special Forces when their knives and sheaths were failing in the extreme conditions of the field. FirstEdge™ addressed the concerns of the Special Forces and created a superior knife and sheath that withstand the demands encountered in the most extreme conditions of training and deployment." To me all that means is they dealt some members of the U.S. Special Forces,not the special forces as a whole, or even one specific part of the them, which means a BK2 can say the same thing if it was carried by someone in the special forces....

    I'm re-watching this vid now, & it's really striking how good you are in front of the camera man. Well, not the cameraman, the camera, man. I dig & often share your opinions, but it's your professionalism & polish that I'm really noticing right now....& not for the 1st time of course, just saying it's hitting me as I'm re-watching this - even the smoothness of the open; you unsheathe the knife & go into your monologue seamlessly, it's just impressive brother. If I didn't have any idea who you were, & say my oldest boy showed this, or another one of your vids to me, I'd assume you were a famous TV personality. You don't get enough credit for your mix of talent & skill....maybe it's the Friday talking, but you really blow me away A-A-ron, & it's my pleasure & honor to call you a fake Interwebs friend, that I don't know....thanks for all you do for us knife dorks, it is mucho appreciated-o.

    Hello there. I'm somewhat new to the channel, an I really enjoy your videos. May I request you do a short video on the pros and cons of different types of steel please? I've heard you throw terms around like "Stainless Steel" and "High Carbon" with different numbers. I've tried to look online but there's just too much detail. I'd just like to know some of the 'practicalities', if you will, of the different types of steel. Thank you!

    • @lino5167
      @lino5167 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being very brutish, high carbon steel will generally give you great edge retention and ease of sharpening with also good toughness, but will rust extremely fast on you (and rusted steel leads to the dark side, because it causes anger, hate and suffering). Stainless steels got you covered on the rusting issue, but a stainless that goes about for THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY than a high carbon is usually less resistant to the use that Aaron and other youtubers usually puts them through, either they dull in no time, they suffer some deformation (rolling, warping, etc) or they just chip or even worse, snap at a certain point (however snapping is very uncommon and is mostly due to manufacturing issues).
      There's another topic that might confuse you, which is the Rockwell Hardness. That means that a knife (or a part of it) has a certain degree of wear resistance (the ability to hold a V shape rather than turn into a U with use), generally the higher the HRC the better it'll hold an edge, but the more prone it'll be to break rather than deform).
      Supersteels combine the best of all worlds IF MANUFACTURED RIGHT, which is very costly, thus the very high pricing.
      So, the discussion between the FE 5050 and the BK2 comes to the point "Do I wanna triplicate the price for added corrosion resistance and an ability to hold an edge longer, even taking into consideration that I might not be able to resharpen it when most needed?"
      Usually most of us mortals don't have the need to go beyond 1095 for a high carbon or 440C for a stainless.

    Aaron, I'm kind of thinking out loud here, but why in the hell would they harden the steel to that Rockwell for use in those conditions? Seems to defy the laws of nature! Make the steel super hard which makes it more brittle and then expose it to temperatures that will cause it to be even more brittle. Logically, it does not add up, at least for me. I know the thickness will overcome some of the brittleness in use, but not completely. I bet you that edge and lower parts of the grind are going to chip in chunks in sub-zero temps under moderately hard use. If I'm way off base, somebody set me straight, please! Hope I am not coming off like a jerk, just trying to wrap my head around this whole high Rockwell/cold weather use thing. Thanks for the review!

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No usually I would totally agree. That makes sense, but the teams that contracted them made them wait a year to sell it to the public so they could really use and test it. They were obvious happy with it in those condition. I have no way of testing it to that extreme. For average temps it is very tough with my use. Hope that helps.

    I like Elmax and my TRC knives, model Bushcraft does have elmax. With the 5050 the weight and price are a turn off. And that glass breaker is a bit aggressive for me. I'm not in the military any more, but I can see why soldiers would like a knife like that as a one tool option.

      It is a high price, but I contacted a few custom knife makers ask if that price is reasonable for an Elmax blade this thick and they agreed it was a fair price. Costs a lot to buy, heat treat, and eats belts when grinding.

      With the mass and relative shortness of that blade , I don't think flex would be an issue. Looks like you could chop your way out of a tank with it.

    • @johnrossi4607
      @johnrossi4607 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Finn Green Flex would better imo, so the knife tip wouldn't be so stressed it would snap. You can only take the heat-treat so high and then the toughness makes it brittle. Gotta get the HT just right. That being said, I think some people expect too much from a knife. It's for cutting, not prying. Crow bars are for prying. I have a mini pry bar. They're great. All the best !... PAPA DUKES

    Nice knife but even with Elmax, I think the price is inflated. Probably because they can market the Seals thing.
    I own a ZT 0560 in Elmax, granted its less metal but this is a more complex folder with bearing pivot, 3D machined titanium scales and matching G10. Folders cost way more to make have more complex machining and must be precisely built yet it cost significantly less than this.
    At this price they are competing with the absolute best in that size.
    I have a Scrapyard 711 that was half that price, is over 7" with a steel I would put up ahaonst Elmax in anything but corrosion resistance.
    $250 I might understand but this is a bit crazy.

  • @IronRakkasanCSM
    @IronRakkasanCSM 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First Edge is Great if you're a collector, but for a "combat knife" the ZT0100 costs less because you actually pay for the knife quality and not the marketing; military,tactical, special forces blah blah blah. if a survival knife you want there so many great ones for a fraction of the cost of a first First Edge knife. RLTW!

    Does anyone know anything about actual SEAL teams choosing to carry this thing?

    • @warriorethic
      @warriorethic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not an actual team. The SEALs have a training complex on Kodiak Island. SEAL candidates (at least the west coast ones) receive cold weather survival training there. I'm guessing candidates are issued this knife during the course. Just to be thorough, by candidates I mean those who have not become full-fledged SEALs but have graduated BUDS. Not diminishing the accomplishment of "only" graduating BUDS. If you can make it through BUDS and it's Hell Week, you are a badass in my book.

      warriorethic
      That's the thing... everyone seems to be "guessing" on what the SEALs actual use of this knife is. I haven't seen actual naval representatives speak to its use and success. I did see an actual SEAL talk about the 5150 but it was given to him for review and he really didn't know much about it.

    • @warriorethic
      @warriorethic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand where you are coming from. But finding someone in the know to confirm actual type of use will be hard to come by, especially on youtube. I know that for a long time the Cold Steel SRK was issued during BUDS to candidates. From that information I concluded what I stated above. The fact is SEALs have a lot of leeway and discretion when determining what gear they will use. That means team to team or even by individual, gear carried may vary somewhat. Furthermore, gear carried is often mission specific. Gear carried for a an urban mission may be drastically different from gear carried during a mission in the mountains of Afghanistan, obviously. While some representative may declare something is the official such and such of the Navy SEALs, it may be lip service only or a very broad generalization. For the most part they carry whatever they damn well please, within reason, if they can justify it's usefulness for the current mission. I've read multiple books written by former SEALs and spoken with two personally. (Right place, right time, I'm a nobody) While there were certainly contradictions between what I have read and what I have been told personally, a common thread was how much discretion they were allowed when it came to gear(and mission planning, but that's a whole other can of worms.) In short, the answer you are looking for you will not find, short of being one yourself. Sure, it is a guess. But I would like to think it is an educated one.

Save your money and just get a BK-2 or Esee 5 unless your dead set on wanting one and paying $300 now! They are hard to find now!
