    Definition seems like a pretty cool knife. Maybe second type of cool for some, but from my experience, knives that are 1/4 thick don't performing all that well. It's almost like having a sharpened pry bar. Generally 3/16 is about as thick as I'll go.
    Also, I would be interested in hearing what he did to break other knives in the past?... Possibly a poor heat treat on those bladed? I've been pretty hard on blades in the past, and have even tried the "one tool option" on multiple occasions when on weeklong camping trips and have never broken a full tang knife. I've been through multiple classes also and I've only personally seen one person break a knife in the field and it was a rat-tail tang knife. Just some thoughts and thanks for another great review.

    Hey everyone, I have a question for you. I currently own a SOG Seal Team Elite and it is great, but not the most practical of survival knives. I am looking to buy something that is more geared towards survival (more of a drop point, sabre or flat grind, etc.) but I don't want to spend to much on it either. What are your thoughts on Schrade SCHF37M? Or maybe you can recommend some other great knives? Thank you guys

  • @Redbeardblades

    The kydex sheath can be both left or right handed. It is custom made to each knife and customer.

  • @toddklekotka3340
    @toddklekotka3340 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like that knife. I think a 1/4 inch version with that high hollow grind would still be very strong. Though I would like to see one that has about a 6-7 inch blade similar in design, with a longer handle, same steel, would be a monster in the woods, lol. Excellent review Aaron, keep'em coming!

  • @Redbeardblades
    @Redbeardblades 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is Josh from J. Wolfe Cutlery.Due to the demand of the more popular thickness of the 1/4 inch version of the knife. I have opened that thickness up to civilians as well. This was decision that was just made due to so.many inquiries about the 1/4 inch knife. However, civilians will not receive the Army Sniper Association logo etched on their knife. This will obviously not effect the design and performance of the knife. I hope this answers any questions you all may have. Thank you all for the support!

    I luv knives and always have. It looks like a kitchen knife but performs like a field knife. Its design is like going back to the basics with a different purpose and i luv that. They still use that design to this day in the kithcen because it works. For the tactical field app it was designed for I dont think food prep was what they had in mind. Awsome performer. Luv the thickness of it and exposed full tang.

  • @newhampshirebound8551
    @newhampshirebound8551 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very impressive. Like a more reasonably sized BK2. I'm glad the thick version is available if I'm reading the description correctly. I really don't agree with making military versions available only to military. But that's another conversation. Awesome knife.

    Just knowing what it takes to heat treat CPM 3V properly tells me he is dead serious about making some serious quality blades. That thing is a monster that could probably cut through most production knives on the market.

    This blade looks brilliant. Odd that there is a military version, not complaining since I'm in the military myself but seems like odd marketing. Although the 3/16s version I think would be more than enough, though the 5/16s is just so MANLY. To correct the handle I would do a Becker style pommel for the 3 finger action and having the hammer, obviously make it a little different but something of that style would be nice. Might help with the chopping.

  • @wornout3499

    like the Prather war bowie the handle shape pulls the knuckles up out of the way of your work what ever that might be.

  • @csh6220
    @csh6220 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 5/16 in. in cpm 3v, this is the toughest/strongest knife I have ever seen. The hollow grind saves on the weight, but for me, I would love to have the civi model at 3 /16 in. in cpm 3v with a convex grind, The tip would be super strong, and cpm 3v will hold an edge a long time. Not too hard to sharpen either. I hope they are affordable. Thanks for showing this!

    Hey Aaron, another great one. I know there is differences between size and blade material, but can you compare this knife to Tops Silent Hero - asking about camping and outdoor activity. I'm searching for medium size knife (around 5-7 inch) and on my top list are Esee 6 and Silent Hero, but if I buy just one I don't mind to throw more money on something better. You know just trying to do better informed purchase. Thanks in advance.

    I love the overall shape & length dimensions/ratios of this knife. I have little girl hands, so the handle is plenty long for me...and it's so cool that we can choose our own preferred grinds...I would def. go with a FFG for the looks, slicing performance, & weight reduction. Actually, I would be all over this if it came in a thinner stock...1/8" would be great for me. With CPM-3V & a great HT, I would never ever need this knife to be thicker than 1/8". Just a personal preference thing...

  • @mrouterrim

    You compared this boss of a knife to the BK-2. Would you agree that it is more closely related to say the ESEE 5 rather than the BK-2 in design? And then how does it compare to the the ESEE 5? The handle looks fairly similar and and the blade thickness is close as well. The BK-2 is more of a survival knife designed more for woodworking whereas the ESEE 5 has a more tactical design to it like this does so just wondering if this knife at all reminded you of the ESEE 5? Also I know you're big on handle ergonomics and simplistic handle designs, but I think I asked about the Buck 245 tactical knife that has a very similar story behind it like this knife does. Being a replication of a knife made by a navy seal who designed it to fit his needs in the military. That being said the Buck 245 does have finger placements on the handle that I think you said you wouldn't prefer. After doing some research on the 245 I read some product reviews and people commented saying that the handle really didn't

    • @d.a.harlan7015
      @d.a.harlan7015 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have any hotspots even with those multiple finger humps on it. I don't know maybe something you might look at. It's a 5160 steel blade and like the above knife a portion of each of the sales go to the Navy Seal foundation in honor of them and the man who was a seal and unfortunately died during a training exercise. So again, it does give the appearance that it would have some hotspots but it might be worth a shot at trying it out. Just a thought. I love your videos, keep up the good work!

    Regarding the sheath: let's not forget us lefties. Is that Kydex sheath reversible?

    • @BrendonKinsey
      @BrendonKinsey 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats one of the benifits of kydex, it isnt side dependant, unlike leather you just adjust you carry option to suit.

    • @GaryHorn
      @GaryHorn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BrendonKinsey So, are you saying that all Kydex sheaths are made reversible?

    • @BrendonKinsey
      @BrendonKinsey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Gary Horn absolutly! the eyelet holes you can see down the side of this style sheath (called a taco style as it one piece folded over) are literally hole you use to screw your attachments too. you can out a teklok like in the vid, you can also get a mollie lok, basic belt clip and much more. you can also get fire steel clips and numerous other accessories. I am a lefty and make my own or buy kydex sheaths for all the knives i buy/make as they are easily aquired for us poor bastards who cannot often use default sheaths and can be very quickly swapped to other size carry in about a minute.

    • @BrendonKinsey
      @BrendonKinsey 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      with the eyelets you can mount the clips any way you want, from horizontal to vertical or diagonal.

    It might be valid to wonder if reviewing the military model is helpful to us.

      +Gary Horn This is Josh from J.

    I was just going to leave a rather acerbic comment about how well Oakley has done by dividing their sales to civilian and service. Got to say it just pisses me off. But I read the info he passed on to you Gideon and it's good to know that the 1/4 inch blade is available to everyone. I felt the same about the PP. When it gets down to it, civilians are paying as much for their knife as the military and were getting much less of a knife. This is the point I am making about the 2 different standards for manufacture and price.

      I have to agree. The arrogance the designer showed is galling. Yes, soldiers do provide service to the country. So do bakers, teachers, police, fire fighters, and many other honorable professions.

      I also agree if iam looking at this for a main knife why would i settle for 3.16ths ??if i have to be in the military well here in canada armed forces to get his knife in quater inch i would just go buy a knife from a different maker and he looses a sale that rule makes no sense at all its stupid!!!!!!

    That's a beast of a blade. Thank you for staring it and the story behind it. I have an ex-military sniper friend in Kentucky who makes precision weapons like these: vimeo.com/227439719 Okay, not an ad for him there, but it shows that snipers are seriously zero tolerance precision guys in anything they do. Knives and otherwise.

    I like the look of the knife but there was absolutely no need for that thick of a knife for a 5inch blafe . you don't even need a quarter inch let alone more than a quarter inch little Overkill

    nice knife I like the design And the steel but the military version's just way to fat omg! iv been in the usmc and have a navy commendation metal with combat v! for retrieving a downed tank from an enemy mine field iv never ever needed a knife 5/16 thick! as a mater of fact 1/4 thick is way to much! I can get a splitting mall if I need something that big! im not trying to be a pain in the butt I just dont see a use for it other than mabe for a fireman trying to pry open a car door while waiting for the jaws of life to get hooked up!

    10:00 omg... will you please stop giving the impression that chopping is a good idea, good practice, good habit, good attribute for a sub-8" blade, efficient, effective, good for your knife, safe, smart, or even actually useful?? Its not, and its not necessary, ever.
    As for this knife.. I wonder how its stacks up to the First Edge 5050?
