First Edge Survival Knife: Navy Seals, Elmax Steel - Is It Worth It?

  • The First Edge 5050 Survival Knife is a beast. This is not a bushcraft knife, it's not compact, but with Elmax steel and a unique sheath this thing is a solid performer. Used by Naval Special Warfare units, this knife and sheath system are going to cost you a bit but they are likely to be a life-long investment. I love Elmax - this steel has been impressive to me in all the knives I've used it in.

    I own one, my opinion on a survival knife it should be able to pry open a door, punch through a car door, cut down a tree, or clean a trout. I am confident this knife can do it all, while maintaining a fantastic edge due to the Elmax. On another channel a guy cuts through a can withthe edge, does a lot of chopping, then shaves with it. Can you get a cheaper blade? Of course you can, however until you have owned an Elmax blade, don't knock the price. Get one.

    Picked one up and it is really a hefty field knife. The handle has a great feeling to it. If you get a chance, pick it up and see what you think. When I first saw this, I thought I was looking at a ESEE knife. Even though I have two of their knives, I believe that they are different and I like this knife.

    Hello, based on your experience of knives to use in the open air rather a D2 steel or stainless steel as M390? Let me know which one is better in this field according to you, your videos are very beautiful. Hi Michele.

    Is this knife hollow ground? It appears it could be hollow or flat ground. I think hollow ground is not appropriate for a sharpened prybar style knife. It IS for edge and sharpenability so perhaps with the right steel we have a new animal! I think Jay Fisher would do a hollow grind on a heavy knife but he puts a lot of accepted practice into thermal cycles and stabilizing the allotropes at optimal point.

    Did a Navy seal just buy one and use it on mission once? Or is this really issued to the teams as an option to carry? I know the Mission titanium knives (MPK) are actually issued to seal teams for use in underwater demolition tasks due to it's complete lack of magnetic properties.

      TopHat it makes you wonder how people survived before stainless steel.

    • @PotHat
      @PotHat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen Beard, it can definitely be done, but stainless steel will give you more ammunition to survive than carbon.
      Besides, being caught in a survival situation without any of your gear is rare for a sensible outdoorsman.

    Hello, I'm looking for a "definitive" knife which lasts for a lifetime, so it interests me to be of EXCELLENT quality. I would use it for excursions, make wood for the fire and carvings, are willing to spend a fairly inportante figure provided it is for the mouse. This knife in your opinion can be what I'm looking for your expertise? let me know your opinion, a greeting Michele.

    Good video but the batoning was a huge let down. For a super steel $350 knife you batoned wood a mora companion would eat up with no problems?

    • @christopher_martin
      @christopher_martin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      im sure moras hc is much tougher than elmax, 350 dollars for a knife that will break under extreme use, also im tired of hearing navy seal knife , navy seals dont all carry the same knife some carry kabar some carry sog seal pup and some carry ontarios sp line, i personally would take ontarios 5160 over all the other blades that i have seen called a navy seal knife. JMHO

    • @ssunfish
      @ssunfish 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The batonning footage looked like rotten wood bec it was shaggy/ crumbly and being smsll diameter it made me think of the bigger saw-cut logs the DBK heroes baton on in video tests. Still, I applaud just doing all the videos that I've seen with a fresh "one take" feel and not agonizing over cinematography or higher production values!

  • @Lars1540
    @Lars1540 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, sorry to hear you felt like garbage while making this video! =( This knife looks decent, however I certainly don't think it's worth the $315 price tag. And honestly, I'm not a fan of Elmax steel anyways because it's notorious for being hard to heat treat, and often results in unpredictable quality control. And let's face it, this knife is truly nothing more than an ESEE-5 clone with Elmax and a slightly upgraded sheath... And frankly, I think 1095 is a perfectly adequate steel that is consequently more versatile because it lends itself to being able to be easily sharpened in the field on something like a river rock in a pinch... That ain't happening with Elmax! I'll stick with the much more palatable $130 ESEE-5 that comes with a no-questions-asked lifetime warranty.

  • @christopher_martin
    @christopher_martin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    i love the design of this knife however im NOT a fan of elmax or any stainless blades, 60 or 61 rockwell great for edge retention but is also much more brittle than a 5160 HC steel blade or o1 tool steel, its great having a knife that stays sharp for a while but i want a knife that wont break when you need it most, i was told s30v was great, but tip broke on some light prying of oak, i guess it comes down to would you rather have a knife that stays sharp longer or would you rather have a blade that will still be in one piece when it counts JMHO

  • @axlplayer14
    @axlplayer14 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The whole Navy Seal knife thing is bullshit. Several different companies claim the Seals all use their knives. One or two may use them but it is not standard issue and most Seals just use whatever they prefer from person to person. The knife companies just ride on the fact maybe few Seals use that brand. Honestly Seals don't know much about knives, they don't need to. It just has to stab and not break. Not hating on anyone just stating facts.
