Thanks for the vid. I did 3 tours in VietNam as a chopper door-gunner. We were issued either a K-Bar or Camillus knife. I had a 7-inch and a 5-inch, but my choice was mostly the 5-inch. It had a leather sheath with a sharpening stone. It has been well used over the years and I still have it to this day. I also still have the 7-inch one.
My grandpa was a door gunner in Vietnam. He lost his life. But made it back alive. I think about the kinds of memories he had to live with. Everyday of my life.

The world is full of liars, I hope you aren’t one of them. 3 tours as a door gunner? Highly unlikely.
I also flew as a gunner with helos in Iraq. We carried a variety of knives, including the Ontario pilot survival knife and KaBar. I also had a couple folding knives like the CRKT-M16 and Gerber Applegate-Sykes combat folder. I still have all but the Ontario.
One of the perks about flying in a helicopter crew is people leaving stuff on board. I found everything from grenades to NVGs to a CRKT desert cruiser knife I still have. As the old saying goes: gear adrift is a gift.

that fairbairn knife is actually a reproduction of a case v42 knife that was issued to the first special service force in 1942. you’ll see it on a number of insignias from different units.

Just a note: My Asst. Mgr., @ my 2nd real job: A Sporting Goods Store;.where I made Fishing Dept Manager @ 15yrs. Old: getting my work permit... very laid back man/fishing partner: the last surviving rather tall meaty build of "Darbys Rangers!" Only because when the whole team was recalled to active duty to make their last misson... he had penomia & could not pass med. He lived! Never saw him angry, act out, would never know/nor imagine, his capabilities, nor what he had survived! Taught me a valuable lesson! Just a note! Great guy!

The last knife is called Elmax because the blade steel is elmax. a premier stainless steel, and by far the best quality of all the knives you have on the table.
Your Fairbairn Sykes knife is a replica of the V-42 stiletto, a knife designed from the original F/S knife.
"Some 70 V-42 knives were issued with short U.S. Marine Corps Raider knife scabbards. This was confirmed by Case Cutlery shipping records, which indicate that some 70 V-42 knives were procured by the U.S. Navy and sent to the Brooklyn Navy Depot in late 1942 and early 1943. The knives were issued in 1943 to crewmen serving in USS Omaha Landing Force and Armed Boat Party while the ship was off the Florida coast at the start of a South Atlantic war patrol, searching for German commerce raiders and blockade runners."

I am always looking for Military / Soliers / retired or on duty Special forces guys reporting real combat with knives or sentry removal ...
Perhaps I became addicted to such REAL testimony because my both parents were Military and had to fight and kill with knives during the colonial wars ( I am French, and as you probably know soon after WW2, the French Army was the first involved in the so called " Colonial Wars ", it began in Indochina for the French ( Very deadly as the French Army got " Trapped " and surrounded by their enemies ... my mother got shot in the arm with a pistol caliber very close to the 7.65 ammo, but it was coming from a Chinese or Russian gun, so she never knew exactly the name of the ammo, but kept the bullet when extracted from her arm. When I was a child, I was Amased by this little piece of metal, it was an FMJ ( full metal jacket ) type of bullet, and as no bone was touched ( she was lucky ) the bullet traveled through her triceps to end not very deep inside her chest, so surgery was easy, no blood vessel to repair, and the muscles are recovering amazingly well ( depending of the caliber, of course ...).
After Indochina the French were involved in a far more deadly war in Algeria ... French and Algerian people are still uncomfortable to talk about this very special war, and Terrorism in FRANCE began during this war, sometimes with the help of French citizens opposed to colonialism ...

But, sorry for this long story, I am so interested in History and especially true story related to battlefields etc ...
I DO LOVE KNIVES, AND ESPECIALLY COMBAT KNIVES.
But, nowadays, firearms are far more popular and used as primary weapon by military, even for sentry removal, they often prefer guns with silencers.

The knife isn’t called elmax. First edge made 2 large knife models focused on navy seals: the 5050 and 5150. Both made of elmax.
@@DarkKnight369 Actually, the 5050 was made for the Seals, while the 5150 was for army SF winter training course. Also, although the 5050 and 5150 were the two basic large models they made, there were variants, like a serrated edge model, that had differing terminal numbers (i.e. 5155). Interestingly, the feedback from SF teams was that elmax was too difficult to sharpen in the field, so they also produced variants of the 5150 (again with a different numbering) that were made of 440C steel, rather than elmax. These are all excellent knives, with no skeletonizing of the steel in the handles, which I think is preferable for hard-use large knives (there are a couple of good video reviews on TH-cam). Unfortunately, the FirstEdge was poorly managed, and even with the government contracts, went out of business after only a couple of years. I discovered them just after they folded, and the knives were very difficult to find. I eventually got a 5050 from a previous owner, while a dealer in Germany had some new-old stock 5150s a couple of years ago. I also picked up a virtually unused 6050, which is a 4.5-inch version of the 5050, that is a great all-around knife. One other last detail on the FirstEdge knives: on the blade, there are sometimes little stars between the model number and the metal name (for example: 5150 ** Elmax). The stars denote production runs. No star = first run, one star = second run, two stars = third run, three stars = fourth run. I've only seen up to three stars on any of their knives, so that speaks to how short the company lasted.
With regard to the First Edge knife; 5150 is the model number, Elmax is the steel.

Many years ago, I was looking around the Navy Supply system and found the knives. The Nimravus got my attention. So with a bit of talking and convincing, I somehow got one signed off. Still have it, and love it. When needed it never fails.
My other favorite is an old Benchmade Stryker. I have destroyed other knives doing what I have done with the Stryker.
And I have many other knives. Some for use, others... just because.
Dorr rolled into the renaissance fair dressed up like a tactical wizard looking for sweet magic daggers.

About the First Edge, I was lucky to get a 5050 a few years back, and recently did some bushcraft/firecraft videos with it. It's great for batoning wood down to matchsticks, and holds a sharp edge extremely well.
The 5050 is a rare knife these days, since First Edge disappeared from the civilian/consumer arena. Elmax is the type of steel by the way (strong, corrosion resistant).
The 5050 model has the drop point, and the 5150 has a clip point.
when they disappeared, they went fast!
I still have great love for my M7 bayonet, which I still have to this day. Pro tip: An M7 will go through a IIIA vest with a bayonet thrust. :)

Nice video, thanks for taking the time to pass along the information. I have either that same Gerber or one like it on my work vest, amazing how many times it gets used. That and a moderately equipted Swiss Army pocket knife is all that was needed.

Echoing what some others have affirmed regarding the First Edge; ELMAX is the steel type, a stainless powder "clean steel" with a relatively high carbon content (which could theoretically deem it harder than the softer varieties found in rebar). 5150, while it is a relatively tough spring steel, has a much lower carbon content, and by way of First Edge knives is actually the model number of the knife in question. Anyways, thanks for sharing! If you like the old school KaBar, and ever want to drop a pretty penny on a really awesome uograded version of the knife, KaBar recently commissioned another outstanding veteren owned company, Spartan Blades in N.C., to remake their iconic fighting knife using MagnaCut steel, one of the latest-greatest advancements in knife steel metallurgy; a super tough stainless with great hardness for longer edge holding properties...

Pretty cool collection. I just picked up a repro. of that M7/M8 bayonet. I believe the sheath is the M8 and the knife is the M7 though. It's actually pretty well made compared to the surplus ones, which were cheaply made to begin with. The sheath and blade needed some love, but overall I'm happy with it. Fits on the end of my rifle just fine. Your fellow bayonet nerds are proud of you, sir. o7
Great video 👍 The knife you thought was a copy of a British Commando knife, is a copy of a Case V-42 stiletto, it was made for the US Army’s First Special Service Force, also known as The Devil’s Brigade, that name came from the Germans during WW2 because in the mornings, they would find their buddies with their throats cut. Look them up one of our best military units.

Only blade I need to get is hunting knife . I've really only used Havalon REPLACEMENT Blade Knives . Havalon Baracuda , Talon and Redi have been my go too for years in the back country . I need to pick up do all be all hunting blade . MKC Stoned Goat or Bark River Gunny Hunter is what I've been eyeing ..

A small section of serrations or "Combo edge" is absolutely crucial. Yes they take more time to sharpen & your knife may not look as elegant or presentable. But damn is it nice to grab line or rope and use those serrations with minimal effort. I have cut & sawed through small metal cables with serrations. Your dullest serrations will still cut through material like butter because they are little saw teeth by design. Spyderco has some nice serrations. So does Cold Steel.

SRK….hard to go wrong. Priced right so if lost or broken, no tears. The compact version is nice too.
Ive handled KBars from the Vietnam war era, as well as KBars from the late eighties and nineties era. I think there is a difference in the quality of the old time KBars vs KBars of the eighties onwards. The KBars in the old days were made of a high carbon steel that really holds and edge well and are resharpened easily. The downside is that high carbon steel rusts easily so you have to keep oil on it. My basic attitude about knives is if they are not high carbon steel blades, I dont want it. The exception would be if I was using it underwater a lot or doing EOD duty...you want a stainless steel knife or a non magnetic knife for EOD duty.

I did two infantry combat deployments with the SOG SEAL pup. I ordered the kydex sheath just prior. It held up very well. Sits in a shadow box now.

I am not a fan of serrated blades BUT..
The Gerber Strongarm or their Prodigy has the best serrations I've ever used. They are super easy to keep sharp and don't get snagged. Most serrations on knives suck in my opinion.

17:00 the FirstEdge knife is actually made of Elmax steel not 5150. All of FirstEdge's knives are made from Elmax, which is a very hard and very tough European "super steel" that's only used on higher end knives.
Have you seen rebar cut with one or a similar model from them? I'm really curious how it would hold up now... Surely a video exists somewhere 🤷♂️

Simple, reliable, holds an edge and gets the job done. Love it. However, you need the Cold Steel Trail Master like Coch to show that you have a real knife. Great stories. As a general field knife I love the Ka-Bar, but I'm also bias since I am a Marine. Love the story about the bayonet. You got to love hearing fix bayonets! Thanks for sharing!!! Great Video!!!
I have an original Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie in Carbon V steel . I once worked at a metal recycling plant on the midnight shift . It got cold during the winter , so I used it to punch holes in a 55 gallon steel drum and hacked up old wooden pallets for a burn barrel . One night I had some trouble hacking apart a pallet . Turns out I had cut through several nails . A few minutes of resharpening took out the minor damage to the edge . I did this for two years until a Safety Sally made me stop . Thanks for your service from a US Navy veteran .
It is very important that a combat knife has an adequate guard - to prevent your hand from running into the blade when stabbing.

I can see the 5150 DNA in a lot of my knives. The TRC Apocalypse (also Elmax steel) is very much the same profile. I have 4 SOG knives, mostly bowies.
The big difference between the 5150 and the Apocalypse is that the 5150 has no skeletonizing of the steel in the handle. I had two Apocalyses, including the rare DLC version, but sold both when I saw a video of them making the knives, which showed how much metal they removed. Other than that, I think TRC knives are among the best production knives out there. I still have one of their NSN knives.
The knife marked Colt you had sharpened is a copy of a V42 1st Special Service knife.
Not a knock off Fairbairn. It’s an American V42 fighting knife repro. They were made specifically for the Devil’s Brigade in WWII but yes very similar to the Fairbairn. Been thinking about getting one myself for stickin hogs.
Yep, and colt did make them for a time.
That said, absolutely nobody besides one offs from custom makers has made them to spec since the original several thousand by case. They are supposed to be deeply hollow ground among other factors and even Case has ever since botched it.
Firstedge knife model name is 5150. Elmax is the steel. Company went out of business, so that knife and model 5050 are highly sought after by knife collectors.

I loved my benchmade” naverwhateveritscalled” mine came with a thumb lock and had it upside down my rig. Never came out once by accident, Even after 500 missions. I really wish I could remember what happened to it.
I carried the Benchmade nimravus in 06 in Iraq. Great knife.
With all that weight the Navy guys carry with them each ounce of a weight is crucial. I think if you have to choose between the knife and 2 additional mags of .223 then it is obvious that you will choose the mags

Damn! Having working a bit with rebar a knife that could be batoned/hammered through it would be impressive!
I would be absolutely stunned if that was true. I would bet dollars the blade would break before doing more than a ding in the rebar. Especially Elmax which is tough but not the toughest steel.
If I was back in service,I'd choose either a TRC Mille Cuori or a Survive Knives GSO 4.7.
My grandfather who had died about 7 years before I was born was known as a tough guy- started working when he was 5, was a bouncer at aome point and sort of a do gooder all around, apparently he donated about 90kg worth of blood in his life time and all that and broke a guys arm because he was beating his woman. Só I grew up hearing about him and not never knowing him and he had one of those Fairbanks knives clone that he would kill pigs in a farm. That knife was laying around for about 20 something years until I found it and sort of stole it when I was 15...my father found it on my drawer and was terrified thinking I was going for someone...he broke it in half and threw it away...

Hey there - question, you mentioned the sheath on the kbar- do you consider a standard leather sheath with a plastic insert unsafe for field use?
NORD sheaths were issued at the end of WWII with the USN MKII. All kabars made after WWII are reproductions. The MKII knifes and sheaths issued all the way up to the 1990s were from WWII. KABAR, CAMILLUS, and Roberson were the manufacturers and the early models were peened 3/4" pomels, late war were pinned 1/4" pommels. The handles were also different from the repro. The knife you got from your buddy was not an issued knife.

The colt dagger is not a copy of the Fairburn Sykes it is a copy of the V-42 dagger issued to some US soldiers in WW2. The fairburn sykes is pakerised not blued and is still made today even though no longer issued. Also the FS has a metal handle without a skullcrusher.

Dude! That is NOT a Sykes Fairbairn knock off. It is a replica of the famous V-42 specifically designed during WWII for the Devil's Brigade.
The Devil's Brigade was originated in July of 1942. Under the official title 1st Special Service Force, American and Canadian soldiers were combined together to form a special task force trained for battle behind enemy lines. The origin of many special units can be traced back to this special force. Due to numerous nocturnal operations where all faces were blackened for camouflage, the German Wehrmacht invented their nickname Black Devils, which bore witness of the great respect they had for their enemy even though the unit was relatively small. In 1943 and 1944, the 1st SSF successfully completed many operations in Italy and France and was able to influence a multitude of important situations. An important piece of equipment of the Devil's Brigade was the specially designed V-42 combat knife which was also part of the intensive close combat training. The handle of compressed leather discs ends in a pointed impact cap. A thick leather padding underneath the slightly curved pommel had to prevent injuries. The two-edged blade made of the non-stainless carbon steel SK-85 is coated and features a corrugated thumb resting around the area of the Ricasso. To this day the crest of the Special Forces of the US Army adorns this legendary dagger.
