One thing we all learn living in Thailand is to avoid any relationship where you have to constantly pump large sums of money into her family to keep the relationship going. Whilst all these stories of financial hardships etc. are often true, it's simply not worth the stress of dealing with having to come to terms with how much you've spent on that relationship at the inevitable end of it.

Sadly, it is far more common in areas tourists typically are exposed to. Elsewhere it is far rarer and slowly vanishing as the middle class grows. I personally know of two couples where the Thai lady took/takes care of her Western husband after moving to Thailand. No hyperbolic exageratiion, true stories. In my personal case, my wife followed me to Europe, has a respecable job here and nursed me back to health after a life-threatening disease. My retired Thai mother in law offered to go back to work if I should loose my job due to my disease (which wasn’t needed, of course).

This will sound harsh, but they were a Thai family living way beyond their means. A house she didn't own and couldn't afford. Two loans on the family farm with house there they couldn't /didn't maintain, tractor, pickup truck, etc.... They were in way over their heads and instead of telling them or recognizing it, you enabled the situation, draining yourself too. Hopefully, you will figure out what you did wrong in this situation, rather than just think your a good man and did your best. It was not your best. A Pattaya tinder date for the ages, such a delicious tale that covers most of the key areas (grandmas house, huge family debts, face, jealousy, scorn, many others). Was there infidelity mixed in as well? The problem is, regardless of what you would have done (or will do in the future), it's rarely ever truly appreciated as we would know it in the West. In fact, it can breed resentment, entitlement, and general disrespect for you throwing your money (and your families money) away to complete strangers. They may even think you are mentally ill. You will need to toughen up or SE Asia will eat your soft a** alive. Good luck as you seem to be a nice lad.

Obviously we don't know the full story, so ignore me as necessary, but I must say this video makes me worried for you. I'm really hoping that you're being a gentleman here, and you've presented an overly diplomatic view of events. The idea that a woman in her situation is going to find someone who can be 100% emotionally present and also provide unlimited financial support for her and her family is...fanciful. Every woman in the world wants something like that, and there aren't many men who can offer it.
You entered into a relationship with this girl. You put everything you had into supporting her, and went completely above and beyond what would reasonably be expected in any normal relationship. In those circumstances, her being frustrated at you being away from home is ridiculous. You were away from home to support her!
If I was treated that way, I wouldn't be calling them a beautiful person, kind heart or a good soul. My view is that your good nature was taken advantage of. I know that values are very different in Thailand, but it's also not fair to the many Thai people who show remarkable kindness and honesty while dealing with circumstances beyond comprehension to constantly make excuses for dishonest and misleading behaviour. I struggle to see how letting you do all the hard work to support her family, while complaining that you aren't around is the behaviour of a "good soul". Obviously, you know her better than I do, so perhaps I'm wrong - I don't mean to judge too harshly.
But here's what really worries me about this video. Just zoom out for a second. In your words, you left Australia because you were working in a highly demanding, stressful, poorly paid job in the welfare system. It was your job to intervene in broken families, where children were left homeless. You escaped to Thailand for a fresh start. And in your last year in Thailand, you've....been stressed, working on highly demanding projects to support a broken family, and prevent kids being left homeless. Except now you're not getting paid - this time you're paying for it. Isn't this what you left Australia to get away from? You frame it as using the skills you've developed over your career. And that's true. But another way of looking at it is that you jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.
You seem like a good person who genuinely wants to help others, and your life so far has shown exactly that. But beneath the "land of smiles" veneer, there's unfathomable poverty and misery in Thailand. There's no end to the people that need help, and will use every trick in the book to emotionally manipulate you. If you don't put some walls up, I guarantee you'll find yourself in the same situation pretty soon, and none of us want to see that.

Any really nice girl should have loved you forever for trying so hard. Big props for trying so hard my brother. Dont give up. Hi Sammy, just saw this on my feed and ouchie - sorry for what you went through. I spent a career in the US military with 12 years overseas. Spent time in a few countries. I"m currently retired overseas in Korea with my wife of 35 years. So we have seen this happen before with men who got into it with foreign girls. Girl has heart breaking story, man wants to help and starts shelling out money and it requires more and more money over time. Money isn't enough, girl doesn't want to work, yada, yada, yada and eventually they breakup and the man has much lighter pockets.
I get it, bad things happen to people but if they don't want to work with you, thats a big red flag. Another red flag was the family getting loans and stuff they obviously couldn't afford, plain and simple.
I wasn't rich when we got married so we bought a bank owned property because we couldn't afford a new house. Wife didn't know anything about fixing houses but she learned and was working hard right alongside of me (one house she put down over 900 sq ft of tile by herself). IMO if a women won't work with you to save the house, then she is not as invested as she claims. Perhaps its just immaturity but the result is the same, she wanted you to be the one to save the family and you fell for it. I hope you didn't lose too much money but at least you learned a very important lesson.
Hang in there bro and be careful on the next go round.

Trying to fix other peoples problems trends in one direction that almost always ends with the person helping becoming the problem. A Thai girlfriend's problems are not anybody but hers. Watch how fast and easily they will walk away at any chance once the property is fixed or the hint of not paying for everything. The saying "no money, no honey" doesn't just mean adult fun.
A line from a song from a long time ago "I can picture every move a man can make getting lost in her lovin' is your first mistake". It was true back then and still is today. People go to Thailand and instantly fall in love. I understand it because the West treat men so poorly and many yearn to be treated with kindness and respect. The walls crumble and they are now at the mercy of the "rusulka". She will smile, softly touch/speak, and even embrace then pull you under water.
Tinder is the modern version of picking up a bar girl.
This is the kindest version I could write.
Best wishes to you wherever you end up.

As you know, to survive 14 years in the welfare industry, you cannot fix everyone or everything. Your former girlfriend is university educated therefore I'm sure she is more than capable of making hard decisions and resolving any issue which comes her way. To say she needs to meet someone who can give her what she needs and deserves is a very sad indictment on expectations when forming relationships in whatever country we're in.

I hope this doesn’t break you and force you to leave back home because you have spent every last dollar. I hear too many stories like this about guys moving to southeast Asia and pumping tons of money into their gf’s and family. Then leaving with nothing. I feel for you!

Well you got a new subscriber Sam. Your making a big assumption that she can do better my friend. It might make you feel better leaving the relationship, I'd of been gone long before. If you don't block her and avoid any contact you will be knee deep in messages from her. They don't let go easily. They forget and forgive too easily because they know what you provided in the past. Keep us posted how that is working out for you. Wish you the best and God Bless.

You done your best. Its the same here in the states. The cardboard houses are bid by the cheapest unskilled labor. The builders bankrupt before the warranty expires. Your left doing repairs while making huge payments for 30 years
