The little girl in the first clip has learned that vomiting will make the torment from adults stop. This implies that she's been put through this before until she actually was physically sick, or she's seen it be done to others. This is so sad, especially considering how she's learned to play along.

I once had a kitten who accidentally got her front-left paw caught in a closing door. She was injured for a while, but healed up fully.
While healing, she would limp on her front-left paw and everyone in the house doted on her with endless attention.
After she healed and resumed normal walking, she would limp around on one of her front paws (not always left) whenever she wanted attention.
This small animal was smart enough to understand that "X behavior equals attention" and learned to feign that behavior to get what she wanted.
That is the basis behind Peer Pressure and the root of what is happening to this girl. She is mimicking those around her because they pay attention to her when she does.

These people should fucking be ashamed of themselves. WTF. Mental manipulation and emotional abuse like this. I remember back several years ago when I was living with my dad during my teen years. In short, I was confused and interested in My Little Pony because my girlfriend at the time liked it. When my dad found out, he told me straight to my face he thought I might be gay (I can't blame that too much, but still), or that I was turning into a fucking a pedophile. While still a minor myself. I ended up basically disowning him as my dad, and refuse to talk to him anymore. I hate people and parents that condemn each other or their kids for simply liking something they find "unwanted." Fucking disgusting, and this is a major reason I refuse to be religious, and why if and when I hopefully have kids, as long they'd follow the law, I wouldn't give the slightest shit what they do or don't like.

So, in summary, a little girl saw a mermaid show on animal planet, and really liked mermaids. Most little girls love the idea of mermaids. I did too. I'd pretend I was one when I was swimming in a pool. This is her imagination, another normal thing and healthy thing for children to have. I'm sure the way her parents were acting and responding to this contributed to her making it slightly weird with the voices. It was probably a cry for attention from parents who are too obsessed with Jesus to actually interact on a healthy level with their child. Who the hell has ever considered mermaids "evil" much less demonic? This is more stupid than the Harry Potter thing! Now this girl is terrified, and essentially being told that having an imagination is evil. She's being told she's not normal. And her parents are putting her on blast in front of a crowd, and ironically it's being posted on youtube, which I thought they were trying to say is evil so I'm confused. This is an instance of child abuse. This is cruel.
"Imagination, you shall leave this child!"

It is shameful. I'm 65 years old now. My adoptive parent's were religious people. So I grew up in the church. However. By my mid teens I started having serious doubts about the existence of god. It just did not make sense to me. That what we were suppose to believe in. That came out of the bible. Such as a talking snake. A burning bush that talked. A talking donkey. A virgin giving birth. A dead person coming back to life. etc etc. We would not accept any of that. Outside the bible. Because we know. Animals don't talk. Burning bushes don't talk. Virgins don't have babies. The dead don't come back life. So of course. The next logical thought. Why should I accept this out of the bible? My parents. Were wonderful supportive people. When I explained to them why I had come to be an atheist. They accepted that. I did not try and push my atheism on them. And they did not reject me. Because I had become an atheist. I do ramble on don't I? Lol. The main thing I'm saying is this. I feel so bad for people who have had to endure hatred from family. And friends. Because they had to be honest with themselves. And others. And tell them that they no longer could believe in god. At least not without evidence

I've worked in facilities where physical restraints can be necessary. Sometimes if they are held for too long, the person being restrained can get sick. That is definitely what is happening with this little girl. She is under a high stress situation she probably doesn't fully understand and is being forcibly restrained against her will. You're not exorcising mermaid demons, you're just traumatizing a little girl for no reason. This is horrible and something that that girl might be talking with a therapist about years from now after she's hopefully escaped from this toxic environment.

Unfortunately this behaviour does also occur in first world countries too; nowhere is immune. It's just a matter of number and degree.
I used to work with a man who was convinced that he'd helped exorcise a demon from a fellow student when he was at university. In all other aspects of his life he was no different from anyone else, but he had a family background of evangelical Christianity and that had set his worldview to something that, up until then, I'd never seen before. He knew better than to attempt to preach to anyone while at work, but when the subject of religion came up he was honest about his beliefs and experiences. A few years earlier than that I'd also worked with an ex-monk who described how his belief was so strong that he'd chosen to shut himself away from the world in a monastery to serve God, but had lost that intensity of religious commitment over 20 years and had, at the time I knew him, only just managed to re-integrate himself with the world and pick up his secular career in technology.
That said, religious behaviour that leads a child to believe they've been possessed and subsequently exorcised is repugnant and harmful. Unfortunately any external attempt to bring that to an end would likely only result in righteous fury and claims of persecution. It will take a leader within the church who recognises the harm that's being done in their God's name to make changes to that culture.

As a child, I was completely sold on the whole religion thing. It took a long time for me to learn to speak in tongues, because I was naive enough to take these people at their word, and I was waiting for god to come down and move my mouth. I'd go to altar call and pray a long time, then wait longer for god to move my mouth. Years later, it eventually dawned on me to move it myself and just let gibberish flow out. The complete bullshit the first preacher was spewing is exactly the pattern, just silly nonsense syllables on a loop.
Glossolalia isn't what specifically drove me to get a BS in Linguistics, but it was part of my interest. I now know in pretty good detail the phonetic structure of "tongues," which is almost entirely non-blended onset consonants, a limited vowel selection, and no coda consonants. My mother was once impressed that a Chinese couple visiting their church said it wasn't Chinese but sounded "similar." Well, that's the structure of a lot of Pacific Coast languages. The Korean alphabet is phonetic, but looks like characters from Chinese / Japanese languages to most westerners, and it only has the physical space for a nasal consonant at most in the coda. Many Pacific Coats languages have vowel tones that are distinctive, but that level of nuance usually doesn't make it into "tongues." Some speakers of "tongues" do have more phonetic variation than this, but none are going to use phonemes that are not available in their native languages. So don't expect a lot of umlauts and achlauts from speakers of Romance languages. No, "tongues" has the simplest phonetic structure available to humans.
If you want the complete pentecostal immersion, when I was VERY young, the church had two ladies "compelled by the spirit" every week to give tongues and *interpretation*. One would let her jaw waggle extremely loudly at a quiet part in the sermon, and the other would "translate" the nonsense. God seemed to see fit to interrupt us with prattling nonsense such as "let not your heart be troubled" instead of "Cathy, don't take the number 6 bus this Tuesday" or anything, I dunno, USEFUL. I don't recall this show continuing after the church moved, then we did, but I'm sure somebody still puts on this show. It might be worth a few phone calls to see who still has featured players like this.

I remember reading one story - don't remember if it was that cult or not, but I'm pretty sure it was - about a child who was dying, screaming in agony in his bed, and the parents literally left on vacation. They knew their son was dying, and instead left his older brother in charge of him and his siblings, with a reminder that they were not to contact any authorities or medical personnel.
I think the boy died, but I can't imagine how horrible it must have been for the older brother. Religious people not only claim to know the unknown, but also claim that they can define the parameters of the unknown. For example, they not only claim to know god without proof, but they also claim that they know what god wants without proof. When challenged to provide evidence, these people will often try to shift the burden of proof. “Because the bible says so” is also a common feature, whilst failing to acknowledge that biblical assertions are unprovable. Indeed, it is impossible to verify that any of the claimed words, or deeds, of Jesus Christ were historically accurate.

I would suggest that you suspend your unbelief and humbly search further for truth. Skeptics assume that religious people are naive when it's they who are. In jesus day, jesus declined to work wonders before such because of their unbelief

@@xavierowino Nope. Stephen is right. Only naive people believe in something that can't be proven and then expect others to believe the same thing. Jesus declined to do miracles for nonbelievers because he knew they'd be the ones to see through his cheap tricks.

Exactly. They have no evidence, yet they deny the reality of the things that do have evidence to back it up. Things like an round, billions of years old earth. Some even deny space because the bible apparently says the earth is flat. They believe in a global flood despite multiple civilizations somehow having written texts of their lives during it ( what, were they living underwater or some shit? ). They think the planet was created in 6-7 days, and believe a man was created from dirt, and his wife from a rib ( which is symbolically saying she's lower than him ). Despite evidence that debunks it. Then they turn around and call everyone else " lost ". They project their failures on others. It's what they're good at.

    • @clemstevenson
      @clemstevenson ปีที่แล้ว

@@bestofnesia I blocked Xavier, because his response was utterly irrational. These people cannot let go of their unsubstantiated beliefs, so it's like talking to a brick wall. Indeed, these people will even try to argue that atheists are blind to their version of 'reality'.
These people have no evidence, yet demand that they know the truth. They deny all contradictions, and even ignore the fact that there are approximately 45,000 Christian sects world wide. Because there is no proven truth in the bible, it's easy to have 45,000 Christian sects. They all spout their own nonsense, because no other sect knows the truth.

@@bestofnesia You demand proof for God or spirits but do you have proof for your last statement? - "Jesus declined to do miracles for nonbelievers because he knew they'd be the ones to see through his cheap tricks." Of course not. That's a belief based on faith. That's my point. There are many true things we believe on faith and and it doesnt make one naive. Skeptics are the naive ones for thinking that every thing must be proven scientifically to be accepted....but some things can't proven scientifically even if true.

If you listen to how they are speaking, they simply repeat the same syllables several times before moving onto another. This not only is an inefficient way to transfer information, but severely limits what you can actually encode in words (especially when you have no idea what you are even trying to encode), with sentences being at minimum 3 times as long as they need to (not only an imperfection in the language but a problem when you only speak what you think is one sentence). That’s why languages usually use all syllables to encode information and hence only repeat on occasion. Chinese is a strong example of this, with every syllable being assigned a character and meaning (English words having similar purpose, being composed of subwords as Chinese characters are radicals).
