  • Wacom Cintiq 27" QHD Touch VS Dell Canvas 27" - Which is better? Which should you buy? I get asked this question a lot! So here's the video that will answer a lot of the questions. I've used both of these devices along side each other for the best part of a year now am am finally ready to help you make that buying choice!
    One thing I didn't mention in the video is that Dell did a lot with their software. I avoided this topic because I think the other factors I mentioned are more important and because I'm going to record another video about the software enhancements themselves! Stay tuned for that.
    Remember that Wacom have a couple of new Cintiq Pro's coming soon and hopefully I'll get to review the 32". Fingers crossed. Until then I've got more cool tech reviews for artists like you coming this way!

      Back when I THOUGHT I had the money but wasn't sure, I at least got the VESA plate to get things started, thinking I'd get the Dell Canvas. Things got in the way (ah, freelance life!) so now I've got to save up all over again, but the upgrade is still gonna happen! But I'm getting the 27 QHD

    I just ordered the dell canvas and it should be here tomorrow Dec 8. This is my first ever graphics tablet. I started off with my Samsung galaxy note then I went to a Samsung tablet to do my graphic art. I was going to buy the wacom but the price for the dell canvas i couldn't pass up. I guess for me this is not a bad place to start

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a great pace to start. In fact, you're starting at the top end! Currently there's nothing bigger. A large workspace is going to help you improve as an artist. Try the Totem, watch my video on the micro keyboard and on-screan hot-keys and see if either of those help. You can also get the Wacom remote later if you'd like to try out new ways of working. Download a few app demos and see what you like to use on the big screen. You'll be surprised what a difference it make!

      It won't bother you with the iPad but obviously when you move up to the larger tablets then you'll want the Ergotron arm ;) For now, check out a JoyFactory arm: th-cam.com/play/PLBF9XQfJhvE2pnTApifVEvLIwzmtQ4fIb.html I don't have an iPad Pro to demo the JoyFactory arm but you'll get the idea from a couple of these videos. Do you know if he Dell Canvas pen supports ROTATION? According to the Dell website, it does. But on my Canvas I can only get pressure and tilt to work in both Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint. In Photoshop I get the little triangular warning icon if I set one of the brush settings to pen rotation. I'm just checking to see if it is an isolated incident (i.e. I am having the issue) or if the Canvas pen just does not support it.
    Thanks.

    Hey Lawrence, nice to see more from you on my favorite subjects!
    My Intuos 3 finally died after 10 years of service about 5-6 months ago. While I have been super interested in the Dell Canvas (and still am) I decided to try a different Wacom alternative for budget and space reasons. I got myself an XP-Pen Artist 22e for around $700 USD off Amazon. And it's been great. XP-Pen has really impressed me and their 16" model is possibly the highest rated Wacom alternative I've found anywhere. 16" is the smallest I'd use, but that 22" is the sweet spot for me. 27" being too big since I'm already using 22" dual monitors (the Artist 22e is my third monitor now) and I share a desk with my husband (who also has dual monitors bigger than mine...).
    Also, I'm saving for a new laptop for next year. I'm still eyeing the new Surface Book but, we'll see how the budget goes. We're doing a massive home remodel so minding finances a bit.
    Anyway, I'm very much a Windows user, and that totem (and by extension the Surface Dial) look mighty interesting. Graphics tablets are really stepping up across the board. It's exciting to see the progress.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      27" is too big?? You strange you are! Anyway, how do you feel about VR? You might like a video I've got coming up!

    • @KyninhaH
      @KyninhaH 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, it's so weird to say, but the 27" just tightens up my set up too much. I did mention that it's a shared desk. There are 5 22" + monitors squeezed onto it at current. I should be able to upgrade to my own space after the remodel but that's not for 6 months or more. Sigh.
      By VR you mean virtual reality? Did you get to play with some of those VR art tools???
      :) Cheers and thanks!

      Two different beasts! The Canvas is a drawing tablet but the Surface is a whole computer - Dell is releasing a 5530 which is their competitor to the Surface Book. I'll be reviewing that soon. I will do a comparison too ;)

      I've got my favourite but honestly it'll be different for you because you & me probably do very different things. That's why I didn't declare one to be the 'winner'. It's not so much a competition. I feel that other TH-camrs do that to gain your favour. The displays are the same and I point out all the differences - it just depends which you think will fit your workflow with the apps you use and the type of work you do. Best not to just use the one I do.

    Glad to see a direct comparison between the two. I have the dell and love it. I’ve been asked questions but don’t have a Cintiq to compare. How does the pressure sensitivity in hand compare? Is the touch as good on the Cintiq? And I keep getting asked about rotation- do you know if the Dell has it ? (Not sure if it does and just none of my brushes take advantage of the feature...) anyway thanks for the ergotron vid- it helped a lot when installing 😆

      Glad to hear my Dell/Ergotron video helped! Have a go with the LED lights video. That's a lot of fun too. It's also in my Dell Canvas playlist.
      The Dell Canvas Pen does have rotation. It uses the EMR tech from Wacom so has all of the features. the only one missing is the eraser.

    I’ve had one for a couple months now and all of a sudden it lost pen and touch input. I’ve spent hours on the phone with Dell and can’t figure it out.

    Hello Lawrence I was wondering do you think dell is going to make dell canvas 2 ?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Eric. I think it's a 100% NO to that question. Dell have pretty much shelved the entire dept that handle this product and even stopped supporting their own support team with info. I'm really upset about that myself.

    • @ericbrown1783
      @ericbrown1783 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW It's strange I really don't think that Dell wasn't 100% on board with supporting the canvas 27 in the first place. After it's showing at CES 2017 I think there was no info on it's release years back until you posted a video on it. I was saving up for a Wacom Cintiq but I had hopes for the Dell Canvas 27 because of it's price but also in it's uses in other Content creation such as animation. But in my research It had always come up with mixed result stemming from the lack of Dell really supporting this product. I actually remembered watching a video someone made as they questioned a Dell representer on the functionality of the Dell Canvas 27, and it was a total failed video where a Dell employee couldn't even remember the name of what product she was displaying or even it's capabilities as if they just threw that person in front of the camera and had no clue/ knowledge of what this product is geared towards. Lawrence We/ I appreciate your'e talent both as an artist and as a person helping those of us who wish we was in your shoe's living working as an artist doing the things we love to do. I work in a highly physical job and have to take medicine for my back everyday. That opened my eyes too So when you posted a video on the ergotron arms that you have supporting your tablets and your back problems you would think companies who develop these products would consult you and your fellow artists more on what you have to deal with using there products for hours and hours each day. Thanks again for your input I think I'm going to get the Wacom Cintiq 32 is basically more future proof with the New windows platform approaching since dell has dropped the Dell Canvas 27 the chances for software errors/ glitches and patches with no support well that's to many unknowns.

      If you can find a good deal then yes. Personally I say never to buy a 2nd hand tablet but if you can buy it new and cheap then great. They'll never make a V2 Dell Canvas now because they messed up on their sales for this one. I will make a video for it at some point but it is still a good tablet.

    Lawrence, you may have answered this question a million times over but I didn't see any commentary that spoke to it. Does the Dell Canvas have a matte finish to the screen allowing a more pencil to paper resistance feel like that of the Wacom screens?

      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! The matte screen has a great finish. Really nice texture actually!

  • @muazamrafique
    @muazamrafique 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Lawrence. Something that Dell point out is that the Canvas has 20 points touch screen. How many does the Wacom have? If this is different, does it really make any difference?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't remember off the top of my head. You can always check the spec's on their site. I think it was either 10 or 15. This was a few years before though. This is also different tech. The stylus is still Wacom EMR but the multi-touch is different. There isn't a whopping difference though and you're not going to be doing surgery with your fingers here. That's what the stylus is for. The touch on both devices is good enough but yes - the Dell Canvas does win in that department. Good question ;D

  • @Qichar
    @Qichar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: the new Cintiq Pros (like the 16 which is already out) have something Wacom calls bonded glass, which allows the screen itself to be thinner. I didn't like my Cintiq 22 HD because I felt like there was an extra piece of glass between myself and the screen. How do you feel about the Canvas? Does it still have Cintiq extra piece of glass feeling, or does it feel like you're drawing right on my screen (how I feel the Microsoft Surface, which I own, works). I'm really interested in purchasing the Canvas but I will hold off if the Canvas doesn't feel like I'm drawing right on the screen.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really linking the Current 13" &16" Cintiq Pro's with the 24" & 32". Let's face it. The time difference may lead to changes.
      The 22HD is a much older Wacom.it was great but in comparison to the 27QHD had a higher Parallax.
      The Canvas used a bonded Gorilla Glass that felt great. Really thin and strong. No movement. They reay spent a long time getting that right. If you always used Wacom like me then you could tell the texture wasn't Wacom but only slightly. Never bothered me.
      The New Wacom Cintiq Pro range feel awesome but we don't know YET how that is gonna translate to a bigger size. I'm sure it'll feel great but I want to wait and see before I make a professional decision.
      The Surface range has a gloss screen and I've always said that's a bad call. I want matte. I hate cleaning fingerprints off and seeing my own reflection.

    • @tomgundry3353
      @tomgundry3353 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lawrence Mann but to conclude... Can you tell if there is a difference between the canvas and the 27qhd. With regards to parallax? (I can't wait for new wacom release as Its for a specific job and I care alot about parallax as I do alot of non digital drawing)

  • @vprnl

    I have the Canvas and I love it. But the flat on my desk setup really didn't work for me. I also didn't want to spend a lot of quid on a VESA mount. Total rip off and should have come with the product. So I bought a 15 pound guitar stand (Konig & Meyer 17580-014-55) which can support the weight of the tablet, and it allows me to position it in an angle for drawing as well. Really great solution if you don't want to spend so much on the VESA mount or the ridiculously pricey stand.

      How nice of you to respond. It was really great man. And I can't agree more with what you said in both this video as well as your initial review. I work in Game development and as you said, the Canvas feels like more of an all rounder as opposed to the Wacom and I don't miss the eraser at all :)
      The software is mostly solid and well thought out like you said as well. I like the quick snap between monitors and the panels. I did run into some quirks I believe you ran into as well while you where still testing the Canvas back when it came with two totems. I have the production model, so seemingly they didn't fix all the issues yet, but I've mostly haven't had any issues with it. I'm sure they'll iron out everything as time goes on.
      Great work with the vids Lawrence, keep it up, I love you quick drawing vids and your reviews.
      I look forward to seeing the input you're providing to Adobe for the totem/dial trickle through so I can utilize it more. I currently assigned some key combos to the totem but I'd love the same level of immersion as in sketchable.

    I just wanted to comment on what you were saying on peripheral devices. I've not had the opportunity to use the Wacom remote or the surface dial but I do have a Razer Tartarus gaming keypad, that i use for shortcut keys, and I love it! I got it used off eBay for like $50 and have used it in combination with my pen monitor for about a year now. It really saves me a lot of time and one thing I love about it is I can set it up for 8 separate programs that automatically switch the profile on the device when I launch the program I want to use. And it's real easy to program too, so I can always change the key configurations on the fly if I want to. Great lil device for any digital artist wanting to streamline their work flow imop

      Lawrence Mann I use a Ugee UG-2150. It's got a 21" drawing display and 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity. Nothing anywhere close as good as a Wacom cintiq but it's better than using a standard tablet for me. I come from a long history of using traditional mediums (sketching, colored pencils, oil paints etc.) and the whole hand/eye disconnect was very irritating to me smh :-p lol.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used Wacom since the mid 90's and while I'm loyal and I know they're the best, I'm not a blind fan-boy. There's a place in the market for companies like Ugee. If they get artists creating great art then I'm happy. I'd like to see them innovate a bit more and try develop the pen tech but I know it's more about affordability for their side of the game. Tigers & Lions!
      If you're a traditional artist then I take it you're using Painter?

    • @dale_crossley_art
      @dale_crossley_art 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lawrence Mann Yeah, I started out with sketchbook pro, then got Clip Studio Paint pro and finally was able to get Painter 2017. While sketchbook pro and Clip Studio Paint pro are both good programs they don't have a true traditional art medium feel to me smh. Corel Painter comes the closest to that look and feel of all the software I've tried so far. But I still like to experiment with other art software. I bought me a copy of Paintstorm Studio and it's got a lot of cool tools in it to play with. I also bought me a copy of Affinity photo. Mainly because I wanted a good photo editing program, for color correction and tweaking, but didn't want to have to pay a monthly fee for Photoshop smh. But like Photoshop it has a pretty extensive brush engine and I've played around with it some. I like to experiment and find new methods and tools to achieve the results I want. In that regards I've even played around with free software like MediBang and Krita. But, while fun to experiment with, they still can't give me the results I want like Corel Painter can smh. Although, I would like to try both Art Rage and Rebelle. I've seen some good demos on TH-cam of their tools and features and they definitely look interesting. But at the moment I don't have the time to experiment with the free 30 day trials they offer sigh. Maybe in the near future ;-) lol

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW

      I've found going between Photoshop & Painter with an image gives me the best results for a traditional look but in truth I prefer not to paint anything that looks too traditional. I don't see the point in trying to fake that look. You might as well paint traditionally if that's the look you want. It's the same as painting photo-realistically... just take a photo. lol. I like a digital art style to have a particular digital digital feel. The same way that oil paint is different from water colour for example. It's just my opinion obviously but it's something that shapes my style.

    Hey your reviews are great. In the process of buying right now. My issue is that the choice is Cintiq 24 Pro ( refurb touch is 1999 USD )... or the Dell Canvas 27 ( now they are down to 1149 USD new from Dell ) .. I like the size of the Dell, but the issue everyone seems to have with pen lag and windows 10 issues in general has me spooked. I looked at the Cintiq 22 ( new model ) and would not mind it, screen size would not be an issue, but your review and you hit home with the resolution limit. You seem to be the only one using the Dell Canvas... I use Corel Painter... The questions I have for you about the Dell.... does it have to be the primary screen? someone mentioned that in their review.. it didn't seem right to me. that it absolutely had to... also... you mention the stadler stylus works on the Dell.. any others? ( I am really leaning towards the cintiq 24 pro just for the pen... i love my pro pen 2 ). But for 1149 I have 2 days to until the deal ends on Dell. and might have to jump on it.

      Yup! lol. There are driver conflicts. I will warn you now. Windows does not like 2 monitor stylus tablets. Maybe it's because the machine I run from is also a touchscreen! They do both work though. I think it's largely because Windows doesn't like two different stylus' being used. It can't think that you might do that - bit short sighted of the Windows team in my opinion.

    Just bought Dell Canvas and I love it. I had have zero palm rejections after a week use. 2048 pressure sensitivity and QHD is just fine as I use it for both 2d and 3d. Perhaps 24" wacom will be better for 2d artists. But if you do both 2d and 3d I would say that Dells resolution is better suited for that.

      To be honest it is a null argument now. The Dell Canvas is no longer sold or supported by Dell. If you do buy one 2nd hand then it is almost impossible to find the mounting bracket to use with aa n Ergotron arm OR a stand for it - unless you buy it all as a bundle. Looking at the new cintiq pro touch 24 inch vs the Canvas - there's £1000 difference. I saw a digital arts review saying the canvas had poor brush control - "Where I’m used to controlling opacity from imperceptibly faint to very heavy, sometimes in a single stroke, I could only achieve a blotchy, stepped effect. In fact it really took me aback." Also I guess there's the possibility dell will discontinue the canvas due to low sales and end support for it which won't be an issue with wacom. To find the canvas you have to dig quite deep into their website to find it so it's definitely a fringe product for them. Still it's so much cheaper and gives you a bigger screen.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had no problems with my stroke variation as you can see in the review - It's actually about time I posted some more videos. I've just been so busy with other reviews. What app where they using. Also if they still had drivers installed from their previous tablet that could of caused a conflict without realising - I've seen that before. I beta-test for a lot of companies so I'm used to the problems but I see a lot of the same issues from people who are not used to everyday bugs.
      I haven't seen the Dell Canvas figures, have you? Who has? I'd be very interested to see them though. Who has said they are low? Has anyone actually proven it or is it just the same video?
      I thought we'd see another Canvas by now, maybe a different size but we haven't I do know Dell are working on things though. I put up a video about their upcoming 5530 laptop which will use the Canvas pen. It isn't an XPS 2.-in-1 but a more powerful tablet laptop for serious creatives - a Surface Book killer. So that is something for us with this tech.
      The Canvas uses Wacom tech so Wacom wins either way and it'll always be supported as a Wacom OEM product. Even if the Dell extras fall away. It'll still run as a pen tablet with it's drawing functions it just won't upgrade in ten yrs time once operating systems have move past whatever we have now - but by that point you're tablet is normally past it's life expectancy anyway (especially at a screen so large).

    • @MadelnMachines
      @MadelnMachines 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lawrence Mann Oh that's cool then. I might save £1000 and pick up a canvas if there's not much between them. I was just guessing about sales because it seems so niche for a big company like Dell and hasn't been advertised much. I recently got an XPS 9575 coming from a MacBook because I wanted the whole touch screen 2 in 1 think. I have issues with the speakers viberating / resonating above 50% volume in clamshell mode - its ok in tent mode so might just be because they're downfiring against the desk. The internal components of the laptop also seems to emit a stable and constant piercing high pich noise when doing things like watching TH-cam or Avi files amongst other things. Is just with spoken word or singing. Any idea what could cause that? Could it be the SSD or Graphics - it doesn't sound like coil whine as that fluctuates. If I go back to Mac which I'm considering than I can't get the canvas.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mauro ;) I haven't tried Affinity Photo. I took a detailed look at it but it couldn't do anything that Photoshop couldn't already do so I didn't bother to spend the money. It seems like they just want to make a cheaper version and grab a piece of the action. That's fair enough. Obviously it's not going to be as good. There's going to be some things missing here and there and if, like me, you use other Adobe products such as Premiere Pro, InDesign, Illustrator etc then Affinity Photo is a waste of time. They are trying to create more apps to package along with it to rival Adobe so maybe a few years from now it'll work! If I get a free copy to test then I will review it but at present I'm not going to 'splash the cash' to review it. I could do it with the demo but I don't think that would be fair and if I review anything then I like to take my time and do it justice. lol. I'm studying 3D softwares (Maya, Zbrush, 3D Coat, that kind of softwares) and I'm thinking about getting either Cintiq or Dell Canvas.

    Which one would you suggest? (by the way, I'm PC user) Also, have you used Cintiq Pro as well?
    I was wondering if I should get Cintiq 27 QHD or Cintiq Pro 24, or Dell Canvas. I know that all three of these are in about similar price range but I'm not sure which one would fit me the best.

      I've got a ton of videos about the Cintiq Pros. I've tried the 24" & 32" which should be out soon as well. I would maybe suggest the Cintiq Pro 24" for you because then you can use the Pro Pen 3D - I've been playing with that for the last week and it's nice to have that extra button for moving around in the 3D space all set-up! That will help when you're doing long nights on projects and getting frustrated! The 24 is a nice size too. Selling really well from what I hear.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For that, watch my individual reviews. I go pretty in-depth into the individual features. Especially on the Parallax. I do a lot of eta-testing so my computer is a mess of drivers and the dell drivers and the Wacom drivers don't play well together - not a problem as few people will use both together.

    • @lastbrat7334
      @lastbrat7334 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've watched your individual reviews all right, and believe you claimed the parallax on the dell to be much less pronounced, yet you say in this comparison, there is no difference apart from it being "newer", which I find odd, since parallax and things like surface texture are for many of us the main reason for choosing one over the other. And since you've not mentioned it here, I'm curious why you don't think it makes any difference?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is different but it's good on the Wacom 27QHD. If I was comparing the Canvas to one of the Wacom Alternatives from China then I'd of made a major issue of it. But between these two it's not that big of an issue, especially if you've not tried both. You'll never really notice that slight improvement. It's one of those things reviewers tend to blow out of proportion. Hope that helps!

    • @lastbrat7334
      @lastbrat7334 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, clears things up a bit, thanks. It's unlikely, but have you tried using it next to a normal tablet, and see if there is any intereference? What wacom don't tell you, is that you can't use a cintiq and an intuos closer than 30cm to each other, because of the interference. One of the reasons I sold my cintiq, because it was mucking up the input from my intuos, and vice versa. Wonder if dell and wacom intuos (or the 27qhd) use different frequencies that don't interfere?

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW Thanks for your reply for some reason I did not get a notification. I have a question below now that I have saved up some money.
      I am trying to decide between the new wacom pro series drawing tablets or the Dell Canvas. I like the size of the dell canvas but I don't really want the 24" wacom. So i'm forced
      to choose between the Dell canvas at 27" and the Wacom 32". But I don't want to spend all this money and lose out on features from the new wacom pro series. In addition I hearthe Dell Canvas has mounting issues as well. I'm struggling to make a choice. I dont want to spend all that cash on a large 32" but want all those features but i also don't want the 24 i'd rather have a 27" in size. So i'm in a pickle because Wacom decided to hose everyone over by forcing them into a smaller unit or a larger unit and no middle ground.
      What would I be losing if i went with the Dell canvas vs the new pro series Wacom. Is the cost difference of $1699 for the canvas vs $2000 or $3299 for the new wacom pro. Or should I look into
      buying a wacom 27" QHD Touch off ebay and split the difference. But I hear the paralax is not as bad on the dell canvas due to it's newer design over the wacom 27".
      Sigh... Choices choices... I've done a lot of research but this will be my very first drawing tablet and I want to get the best of the best but would like to get the largest I can. But I
      feel 32 is a tad large. Not that the 24 is too small but would rather have something around the 27".
      My choices are:
      Wacom 27" off ebay "New"
      or
      Dell Canvas + touch
      Or
      Wacom pro 24" / 32"
      Is 8000 pen pressure worth the cost? is the 4k worth the cost? etc.. etc..

Here's something to think about though... If Wacom have gone out of their way to make this not work without the USB-C, is that because it's bad for the device to have 4k pushed through a standard display port? If so, you could be damaging the Wacom. Just a thought on that. A lot of times manufactures will cap speeds and abilities to extend running life of a device. @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha. It doesn't mean it'll be the best one for you. It totally depends on what you do and what apps you use and your personal tastes are. Thus this video. Personally I use the Wacom more because it's already mounted on my Desk. But that doesn't stand for much. I love my MobileStudio because it's 16" and I can draw anywhere with it. I sit with my son and draw on my phone a lot too now! Video coming on that soon ;) Surface is great if you're moving around a lot but if it's you're only device I'd personally want a bigger screen. Kyna who commented here said 27" was too big - she's strange though - I told here that. lol. It's all personal choice. Like I said, I mostly use the Cintiq 27QHD but that's because it's bolted to my desk on the Ergotron. If that changes any time soon then whatever replaces it will be my main tablet!

    Interesting comparison, even if the conclusion is that there's very little to compare in it :)
    While I personally was (and to a degree still am) very pleased to see the Canvas enter the market, what with it seeming to be 99% the same and hitting a lower price point, I've yet to actually buy one - for the simple reason that Dell's UK store doesn't list the articulating stand or the vesa bracket. Not sure whether this is a stock shortage or lack of knowledge in the chain, but Dell really should get on top of that, because I for one really don't want to use a screen of that size at a shallow inclination. I would very firmly prefer to buy from Dell, but I won't buy a Canvas on trust that a stand/mount will be available "later", and now we're so close to the next Cintiqs that I'll be waiting to see what they turn out like before choosing... And if there are still no Canvas stands, then it's fairly obvious which way I'll go.
    Also what was that thing you held up with all the buttons that could be an alternative to the remote/totem? :)

      Like I said, I'm going to show that off in an upcoming review ;D #StaySubscribed!
      Try calling Dell UK and they might be able to help you out with getting hold of the VESA mount or the stand. I think it's an ordering issue more than a stock issue from what I hear!

      Ask for Dell part 452-BCSG 'Dell Canvas VESA Bracket'. Quoting part numbers and the actual reference name might help them track the part down in the system. Let me know how that goes for you!

    • @Nekozji
      @Nekozji 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, well, it went painfully. Used webchat - then they called me anyway. They DO have both accessories, the stand being £527 ex VAT (OUCH!). And of course the website price for the screen is also ex VAT, which I had not noticed until now. Admittedly that was my fault, but still an unpleasant surprise. All together came to over 500 quid more than I'd psyched myself up to part with :(
      Might get the screen on its own, knowing that I can add a stand later if I feel the need, but given that Wacom's 24 pro should be out in January, I'm going to see what the latter offers and make a choice then. Don't think there's going to be as much of a price gap as I originally thought, so makes more sense to get the 'best' one for me, rather than the best one for my wallet :)

    I NEVER ever flip the stylus to erase. Full time freelance illustrator like u (also 3d artist, but occasional projects) . Simply, it makes me loose focus, I need to erase at speed of light. In Clip Paint Studio Pro (Manga Studio) , I have set my eraser to be the side button. (tho I change settings depending on if am doing line art or sketching or if I am painting ) In Photoshop and others, I used to set "e" key for erase, just assign it to one of the side border buttons (and ring for brush size.) So i couldn't care less if a pen doesn't come with the eraser tip. Indeed, in my first 22 years or so of existence I've painted and drawn traditionally, never using that sort of eraser, but only regular erases (often tiny pieces of it to get accurate erasing) , or a piece of cloth when with charcoal dust, or just over painting when with oils or acrylics. It translated similar to digital...in a way...
    This video is really useful Still, if dell canvas is not targeted to artists... the fear is that it'd not behave similar in terms of jitter, pressure, and that not only looking one and the other side by side, but actually hardware calibrating both, the results were in both cases pretty similar -some variation occurs even among two devices of same model, for a fabrication process matter, but should be minimal. If differences are significant, then it'd be that the internals are not that similar.... A 100% Adobe RGB is... well, more than impressive. Still calibration has a lot of corners, that's why I only tend to rely on that...Anyway, I have an Spectraview (NEC) , and even this one, in its default settings is pretty good already, I guess is same case with both D. Canvas and QHD, if not even much better. (my monitor is much older... tho color accuracy was there in very old models, it is what matters...)
    The conclusion is very useful... In my view, the Canvas is pretty much same set of needed "power" for an artist, at a lower price. Yeah, let's see what happens on January... but if QHD goes down in price, I feel somehow Canvas might do that as well (and probably would be even more, quite a golden surprise. IE, that QHD went down to 1700 once 32" is out, Canvas could go 1500 or 1200, one can dream...)
    What are we using ? Me it's an old Intuos Pro 4 XL. Still works great, getting used to it since am a freelancer - several years- more than ever before. But having in mind purchasing an under 900$ 22" or + pen-display, once the pens in the alternative brands get less jitter (some becoming battery free, some even with EMR technology. Still have not seen a single one without line jitter. Even while this could be an empty debate IF the alternatives, with line stabilization would cure 100% that slight jitter. But for some reason, reviewers tend not to do so. Maybe as some don't have Clip paint Stdudio, which has among the best stabilizers, but not even Krita, which is free and has also a good implementation of the feature. ) . Luckily, the very latest Adobe Photoshop (everybody, salute the King... as it is, indeed) update - I believe- is having FINALLY line smoothing. Affinity Photo includes it as well. You would say then ppl reviewing cheapo pen-displays would add this test? well, they don't. They'll notice in every single case the diagonal test jitter, but avoid doing the smoothing feature test. As in the devices where setting a light smoothing strength (stabilization, more than smoothing) , if that gets compensated, you have a fully functional machine. After all, i always INK (paint is a different world) with some slight stabilization, so, would not be an issue, and you'd be getting an usable device for what, 500 to 900 $? for essentially similar functionality Wacom or Dell charges a lot more....Yeah, this is a hint for reviewers... ;) . I believe is the first time I mention it to you. And anyway, this is not a video review of a specific product, is the comparisons of two after having reviewed both, separately. A very good video to watch, as often you look at separate reviews from even same author, and you wouldn't be able to tell which he or she personally prefers...I don't see any special preference here, btw, only information for people that would never be able to use and test those. Direct experience with the devices is important for making a purhcase decision of this level.

      I'm the same, many times I find it faster to hit the E key than to flip the stylus!
      You're using Affinity Photo. I've had a couple of requests to review it and I can't bring myself to buy it because it just doesn't look worth it wen I already have Photoshop. Sure, if I didn't - maybe. But nut if you have it. lol. It's trying to hard to be Photoshop I think that's my problem with it. I think it is doing a great job at that though. Best so far out of all the clones. What do you think as a user?
      Glad you like this video. I've put off making it for a while. I wanted to use both for a good while before making a real comparison. Trouble is I get asked this question several times a week. People even private messaging me on Facebook and emailing me from my website (I've had to put I sign up saying no TH-cam questions please!!! Do it in the comments lol).
      Photoshop has great line stabilisation now but can cause slow-down if, like me, you work on massive files. It's not always the best solution. It's better to have a better tablet than to rely on the software to correct your stroke in post. It's like a photographer using Photoshop to edit the pic rather than just taking a good photo. You'll never be able to guarantee a good result. Stabilisation is useful for circles and such of course, I won't lie about that. haha #cheater.
      I try not to show preference in my reviews. I am annoyingly logical & unbiased in real life if you ask my wife. I've used Wacom since the mid 90's but I understand the market place, I talk to all the companies and understand the need for Wacom alternatives unlike a lot of fan boys. The nearest you'll hear me get to bias is my rants on Apple and that's only because I know they can do so much better. I really hope they do come back with so great stuff for artists soon as well. I'll be the first guy to champion them if they do! At the end of the day, most people watch reviews because they just want to know the details or they just want their suspicions confirming. People watch a whole bundle of reviews before making a buying choice. More & more reviewers are making 'negaviews' (negative-reviews) because they are click-bait that get them more views & money which is bad for the viewer but this all opinion based biased. Reviewing is a lot like reading the news - you should try and give the facts without being too over the top on pushing your agenda where possible. Obviously your channel is going to have an opinion but a think there's got the be a balance. It's kind of like the Force. lol.

      Yeah; I vary my shortcuts almost per project, and even per project stage (ie inking vs coloring or sketching). Sometimes E is in a tablet side button, sometimes in the side pen button...
      Actually....er....Not exactly. I used it (Affinity Photo) intensely in its windows beta times, to help improving it, in its open public beta (ended, it's released since long). Then I purchased Designer,but not Photo. To be brutally honest, I still would wait a bit more to "move" all my projects and projects stages to Affinity Photo. It has some corners to polish yet in the brush, painting department. But is very complete in everything else. I do my work with Clip Paint Studio, which I love with a passion for inking. And Krita for a lot of the coloring, sometimes, even sometimes for the inking, as has a great stabilizing pack of features. But what CSP conquers in inking, line art, IMO is yet to be surpassed by the other applications. Including Photoshop. For regular digital painting, that's a different story.
      About if it is worth it... If you have the cc subscription, yep, no point. IMO, Affinity Photo is an alternative for those needing a bit less features, but still wanting to be capable of full, complete print workflows, including PDF export, CMYK, color profiles, etc, etc. And a good set of tools to edit images, with a lot of layers flexibility, vector tools, etc. IMO, PS is superior. But, it is still extremely atractive because is not a suscription, but a one time purchase of very low cost (50 bucks or so, I believe is now) , and free upgrades between major version updates (1.0 , 2,0.... I believe. They release a ton of free updates). Designer is maybe even more interesting as a purchase, because besides being very capable, IMO, it has less of a bigger number of competitors. (image editing in raster, specially painting specialized apps, starts to be crowded ;). But Photo is specialized in photography and image editing, not painting. Tho, has quite some painting tools. )
      You ask me for my opinion... Nope, if you already have Photoshop, no point. Unless you are not fully sure you are always going to be so (and up to the monthly subscription). If not, is not a bad purchase, as is ultra cheap, and every tool helps in certain projects. But having Photoshop,really would be duplicating things, mostly. UI is very similar to Adobe's, but is not identical, so, people with difficulty to adapt to new UIs - not my case - may detect that. Not an issue in any case, though, is a very easy UI. But IMO, Photoshop is better. made by a much larger company, and perfected through decades, this was to be expected. But is incredible all what this new tiny app can do. Anyway, affordable software (or free when the software is GREAT (hello Krita, Blender, Thunderbird, Wings3D) and not in any way when it is mediocre ) is important in the long run, IMO. But that's maybe just me.... About why it is trying hard to be photoshop (it has some cleverer approaches to some matters, and viceversa also happens), it's simple, the reason : Its potential users are people very fed up with the imposition of a subscription system, being forced to rent, and not offered a purchase possibility, as they were used to. These "escapees" need to feel at home, and also, you can't make pros at a high level of experience to deal with a too different UI. It uses what is a global standard now, and IMO, that's clever and...convenient, for us. I've been using Photoshop in companies since 1995. So, any app using Adobe Photoshop (or Illustrator, Premiere...) UI standards is making me a favor... Anyway, is not _that_ similar, imo... :)
      But IMO, it is still polishing things. I kind of guess it's gonna be a much bigger hit once certain things continue to be improved. IMO, for now is beating all other alternatives, at least as a global solution. (as specialized tools, like painters, there are some absolute jewels, out there ....)
      I have not tested the new line stabilization in Photoshop. It looks cool in the video, but unsure how it behaves. Consider this sort of feature (also present in csp, krita, sai, mypaint, the global utility called Nezumi...is not a novelty anymore...). I experienced that lag sensation with Nezumi...even trying many settings... But none with csp. Even Krita does it well after fiddling a bit.
      IMO, this feature is mainly for inking !. :) . For digital painting, that it seems to me is mostly what you do, is a bad thing to activate. I do a bit of everything, but lately, a royal lot of inking. So, I use lately more csp than Krita or others. Even so, Affinity is a great addition to those (ie, I strongly recommend this 3 as a tool set, they complement each other well (Affinity Photo in its current status will provide any sort of professional export and image correction, Krita is amazing for painting, CSP is the king for inking. ). Specially when not having Photoshop, or just not willing to use it. )
      About being better to have a better tablet than using stabilization.... Do you make a lot of comic inking, line art in your work ? I say because, really, is a world apart... Digital painting offers zero issues with any tablet, to me. I mean, I can do any oil/acrylics like full composition even with the crappiest basic intuos... But line art (inking detailed clean lines with 100% control, gesture and expression ) is other thing (even while I can ink steadily and fast with traditional paper, and I have been a tablets professional user since the Kurta and the Summagraphics made its appearance... (1991, I believe...)). I have an intuos Pro, also... as I have had a Cintiq, and don't feel fully comfortable drawing over a screen, for several reasons.... could be decades of other habit, too. But I like my screen to be at a distance... not just for warm and health or stuff... Is mostly less tiring for me, as I dedicate a ton of hours a day to image creation, drawing. Plus, and this is maybe a stupid idea, but I like my hardware and software "easily replaceable" . If I need 2k for the tablet, 3000 for the monitor, 2800 for the computer, at a fatal case, I cannot replace all that easily.... and sh1t happens... Then, I managed to do all my work with average solutions, by sharpening more the skills. The advantage is... that when I have a better tool or app... I fly. xD. Anyway, I mean a great monitor, but not an Eizo, a great Intuos Pro, but not a cinitq, and in software, well, not the top ones, but really good tools, just less known and less used. Is a sort of sustainability concept which I always had due to my usual 3 possibilities in my region (and have experienced the 3 quite) are as a en employee in small studios which often wont have the latest app, neither the best tablet, monitor, etc. Or as a remote worker, when often the hardware and software is to be supplied by me, not the company. Or as a freelancer like now, where everything is on me....One tends to search for frugality in every aspect. Even sometimes more than needed.
      About the feature, well, CSP deals better in brushes performances, even with huge files. I never enjoyed the featured till I purchased this thing. Anyway, funny as it sounds, inking a lot gives you a steady hand in the computer too, like I got in traditional (but is a different way). So you find yourself reducing a ton the stabilization strength the more I use it. Probably my hand gets used to the way wacom reproduces my initial gestures. Is not like I started yesterday, been working decades, as I mentioned. But as I say, inking for professional work all day is very different to digital painting, in what respect to this feature (to be set off when painting ! ).
      There need to be alternatives. Photoshop needs the existance of Affinity to improve. Intel needs AMD Ryzens to start doing a better value for the PC consumers. Windows without Macs in the world, or Macs without Windows to compete are not IT worlds I'd love. So is with Wacom. The alternatives might force Wacom to set prices way more affordable for artists. And if not, and as I am seeing that the other companies are improving at speed of light (and cases like the new cintiq 16 was released with more line wobble than the current Parblo, Ugee, Huion or etc) makes you wonder why is still a better deail. Of course, Wacom means quality, durability...but its drivers are far from being error free, and the other companies are allowing people to draw well on a nice screen, on IPS displays, with a lot of pen levels of pressure, etc, etc. Still, I'm all for wacom, but at more reasonable prices.
      _they are click-bait that get them more views & money which is bad for the viewer but this all opinion based biased_
      That is true, but if one knows well the type of product - even if not about the specific model - that is extremely easy to detect. The problem when this is noticed is that one can't know if some important matters are not even being considered, or if the reviewer was so much into negativity, that was not able to see easy workflows/workarounds that allow a potential user to make a great use of that product, despite the problems. I like more the ones like yours : You tell what you see and experience, and people build their own conclusions, later...

      😳 whoa! 👓 Better break out my reading glasses 🤓 This is a long response. lol. Let me grab a ☕...
      Okay, so... you say straight off that Affinity isn't as good as Clip Paint Studio which you use. I've never been a giant fan of CPS so you've just set off a big red alarm bell for me there. I think it's just a matte of time too but some of the other apps I love have 30yrs on Affinity so it's gonna be a while. Which is what I was saying before. Still glad they're trying to it, especially the whole bundle. I just have a sneaky feeling (based on seeing this happen before) that as soon as it gets better and other small bits of software come in behind them... Affinity will turn straight to subscription which is the whole reason people are
      loving them at the moment. lol. Let's see. Maybe I'm too cynical. I'm also cynical of open Beta's. Especially a beta test where you do all that work and then they say 'Thanks. Now go buy it'. lol. Did they give you a discount at least?
      Like you, I've been using Photoshop since the mid 90's and I hated subscription when they bought that in because I only bought every other version of the Adobe software I used. Now though, I have to say that Adobe do a great job updating their software and adding new features - which was something I thought they'd get lazy at once they had us all trapped in payment plans. They've also added a ton more programs and it's actually worked out to be more economical for me as a freelancer to 'rent' the CC bundle than to buy outright. I'm very surprised by that still.
      I used to do a lot of line art back before I went 100% over to digital but It never felt the same doing it on a tablet. Not enough to make it my main focus. Clients seem happy enough with it and that's included Marvel so I shouldn't complain. Personally I find that line stabilisation removes the soul from the art. I never liked it too smooth. And it feels like cheating which I could never come to terms with in my own mind. It's good for practice but I'd still prefer to try and be a better artist than to need the computer's help. I understand that many like it and some even choose their software for it but I think if that's the case, then it's time to start practicing your long line technique... oh what... art colleges have forgotten how to teach basic illustration techniques & fundamentals. Good job the kids have TH-cam at least! lol.
      I suppose the line stabiliser is the equivalent of the spellchecker. I use the spellchecker all the time but then I'm not trying to be a professional author. If I were, I'd certainly brush up on my spelling. I thinks that's a nice analogy.
      I like the fact that you called the Intuos 'crappy'. haha. I've got an Intuos Pro here at the moment and it has the Pro Pen 2. The specs of this tablet are above the sensor & pen specs for the 27QHD Cintiq. No matter if you're drawing line-art or painting with digital oils etc, it comes down to the app and the different brush engine & brush you're using as to the result you're going to see from the tablet. Slim lines with a complex brush which takes advantage of tilt and rotation is only going to get great results out of a tablet with tilt & rotation abilities. Your line art brushes are nice clean black lines so you're going to notice the better results more from a higher quality stylus. Pressure plays a big part in this too. Wacom has over 8k and it's nearest competitor is 4k+ so that makes a big difference to your line art when you add Wacom's tilt, rotation & float activation on top there! Most top apps take advantage of this and you can get some beautiful line art with the Pro Pen 2 on the Intuos above other tablets out there.
      As for Wacom's price, I believe companies should charge whatever they want to charge. I don't cry myself to sleep because I can't afford that Lamborghini Diabilo in Sunburst Yellow from my childhood... I'll find a way to buy it. We all need goals in life. Companies can charge what they like for what they do. That's not illegal. Prices are set because people are willing to pay them. The only way the Wacoom alternatives can force Wacom prices to shift south is if they offer an alternative to Wacom to actual Wacom customers. Huion, Ugee - their customers are not Wacom customers. Their customers want to buy Wacom but don't. If these companies make an actual alternative that can rival Wacom then they might change the price point but right now they are just filling a gap in the market.
      I do have one worry about the Wacom alternatives, which is that if that market gets over saturated, it might destroy sales of basic tablets like the Intuos and dent R&D which would impact the entire tablet industry. I don't think for a moment though that this would end in positive price changes for customers like me.
      As for reviews, I assume that anyone watching already has (or will) watch several other reviews on the same subject. Most people don't comment. Some do browse through and get some of the other great community knowledge. I do get occasionally moaned about because of the length of my videos though some viewers seem to love the length - either way, I'm very aware of the length too. I hate videos that tell you nothing other than tech specs to loud musics 🎧 For me, I also try to make my videos different to every other video out there. I wouldn't do a standard review because I know there are loads out there so I'll always put a bit of a spin on it to make it more of a conversation piece.

      Sorry, it has passed 4 weeks, I just got caught by work, and later I did not remember in which video I owed you a reply! :D
      EDIT: Super very long post, I don't even know if Youtbe is going to let me post this (done in notepad, lol) . Don't read it if don't have time (not even in different coffee breaks, lol). And sorry for the horrible grammar and typos, you can't start to imagine at the speed am writing this (and English is not my first language...)
      Actually...What I meant is that the brush engine in CSP is clearly better, not only than Affinity Photo; Is superior to most things out there. That said, Affinity Photo is much, much more complete as an image editor and tool for preparing work for print than CSP, by far. And even so you can send stuff to print quite well with CSP Pro, the one I got, and even more with CSP Ex
      Oki...simply put there is NOTHING today really beating Photoshop. BUT...Indeed, what I do is doable and perfectly a good solution : A combo of CSP and Affinity Photo clearly does the deal. What is more... both tools are clearly way less demanding than latest photoshop CC in hardware needs, specially while painting. Specially important for illustrators having old machines or just laptops.
      Indeed, what I use is CSP, Affinity photo AND Krita. Which is a jewel in its things.
      And one thing you might want to review in your videos... Rebelle 2. Specially if you like applications that mimic close to perfectly the watercolor effect. Rebelle 2 and Art rage are my next purchases now. As i miss a bit the feel of oils, canvas real textures, watercolor, pastels, charcoal, etc. I could get just Painter, bu these two are pretty good - Art Rage 5 being a more complete software, Rebelle 2 being unrivalled in its water effects- and really cheaper than Painter.
      Do I prefer all these, this pack instead of Photoshop ? While it does NOT mean they are a more powerful optin (they are not! If only just for the fact that is better have all in one only app), but certain specific things are done better by these tools, and those things are important to me. CSP has BETTER inking brush engine, and if like me, often do comic gigs or similar line - art, is when CSP becomes quite convenient.
      Also, Photoshop has taken a path of hardware overuse that I really dislike. I don't have always the very latest machine, the latest edge in CPUs. So, software that optimizes RAM , GPU and CPU better, for me is a winner in not the most important factor, but an important one, none the less.
      The freedom feeling of not depending on a subscription, that alone, it already worths it. But is a harder path, I need to mention : Affinity is too young, there are the usual bumps in the road, unended features, bugs, etc. Still, they go ironing those, work very fast in fixing stuff. So, if someone wants it all perfect, at every time (the thing is : it is never so with Adobe, but people's mindset do not allow to see that...) , and having the very top software of the market, they should stay with Adobe. I'm off that wagon after decades in it. Still, whenever I'll get into a company , as staff, again, yeah, it's Adobe all of it again, of course. But is not a prob for me. Not like after, what, 23 years of intense "photoshopping" am I gonna get any "rusted" for not using it, I've done that test, and I don't happen to forget its usage. :). It does not even happen with 3D, after the experiences have been intense and deep enough...
      Yeah, Affinity Designer is really a joy. And for those having only Inkscape as an option, man is such a difference. Also, I'd say, is not as much of a difference between Photoshop and A. Photo as it is between Illustrator and Designer. After, my very personal view, is that Illustrator was never as polished as Photoshop, neither reigning as dominantly in its field. This summer (probably, but it could get delays) Affinity Publisher (a competing tool with InDesign, Quark, etc, but will be ...years...till it gets on par with those in full functionality!) seems is going to see it's first public beta.
      Euh...With any other company...I'd TOTALLY believe that about going all subscription mode. But this folk is against that, and very recently read so about overpricing, too. They engage since always this very different path : affordable tools, permament purchases, free updated till major versions. The good old days, just now their focus is more in the graphic professional, and less in the occasional hobyist (but at that price, it's for them, too !). They might increase the price (man, 50 bucks per application for a permanent purchase is a steal for almost equivalent to Photoshop and etc!), but not largely, I expect (and maybe no increase at all : they have not even said a word about increasing it). They have tho said several times there wont be subscription. Indeed, the apps that don't do this, take good care on advertisizing so very prominently. As today it's an absolute winning slogan. ("no subscription", you can see it listed as a prominent feature in a bunch of applications from other companies ! As it has become a huge value per itself.)
      I for one, am so against it (it just does not go with me. And I have even paid 2k $ for one only application, is not for the money alone), that if reaches the point it all becomes subscription based, I wont mind - I've done it before, even in the jobs!- to come fully open source (especially with Krita: I could deal all just with it) . I've done in a 100% in my 3D area, and worked very professionally at that in companies, while the tech issues to address in 2D are even easier to solve in a programming point of view, IMO. So, ZERO issue if I have to come to that, and even got to Linux and be done with it ! That's the good part of having had interest for many flavors of things and seeing each solution workflow advantages : You get a ton of flexibility and depend less on monopolistic tactics. I could TOTALL base my regular gigs on solely using Krita, Gimp, Scribus, Blender, Wings3D, Inkscape. I know as I have done so in some of the latest companies, and there all was required for "yesterday" and always top quality. It is very doable. Less comfortable, yeah. But is a personal decision. I wont put up with subscription, unless am inside a company, but for my personal work tools, my freelancing... certainly not. That said, I truly love working with PS, but having done ALL my work later with Clip Paint Studio, and being a few of the pieces of which I am more proud this year, done with Krita... certainly, I see myself now quite free of doing whatever I feel in the mood of doing. :)
      But yeah, is not for everyone, is a hardest path, and I see everyday someone moving to A. Photo expecting to find a mature 30+ old software like Photoshop is.. is not like that, not yet. but is amazing that it can do all what it can already. The future perspective is the most interesting side of it....
      About beta, stuff....Nope, but I mean, the gift is already implicint. Come on, 50 bucks is less than a suite's subscription month. Yeah, we the users do help there, I've done that very intensely, and I help with detecting bugs and even finding workarounds for users that find issues! - These are easily found by ANYONE used to Photoshop, AND some other software... I mean, people used to do the same tasks with very different UIs - it is all part of that about getting certain stuff in exchange of loosing certain other. In the end, people make a balance, and if the balance is positive, they keep using Affinity, if not, they go back to Adobe. Simple as that.
      This said... is merely advices for already experts in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc, looking for a non subscription solution, and ready to loose certain advantages (and gain some hidden, non obvious ones) . This is NOT what I recommend to younger ones willing to ONLY work at a company. Kids, learn Photoshop. Learn Max and Maya. Learn Zbrush. Illustrator. InDesign. After Effects. These are the industry standards. You could say is non ethical from me to say so when I quite hate monopolies, but it'd for me much more of an ethical issue to throw these young artists into getting tied to tools which aren't the required ones, and make them loose those key advantages to get a job !
      But the experts, veterans... no need.. They know the tools, and they get up to speed with a new tool in a week ! . For these is not that crucial, they only need to download from time to time - is what I do- for the very latest A or B package, see what changed, replicate some of th eprofessional workflows, get a good handle of Substance Painter, or Zbrush or whatever trials, so to keep knowledge up to date, while keep doing work with whatever other tools (freelancers often can't buy all these expensive suites)
      Serif has a really old history on providing effective but extremely cheap software, all in permanent purchases. I trusted them since the start in this Affinity new gama due to this. They have ben for ever in the scene, even if it was more for hobbyists. They have just done what they always do, just that now the software is intentionally less of a toy for the people needing to do some work with images (people in their hobby, or other professionals needing to eventually do some graphics) , and more of a suite of tools for graphic professionals.
      But mostly, there are issues for now with the brush engine. The rest of the issues are much smaller bumps, which make it quite a sweet tool already for general editing. Very similar situation with Affinity Designer. I can firmly recommend both. If anything, is just 50 bucks per each. At least in first/second world countries this should not be a large issue. Those non capable even of this, still have a great solution if using well the documentation (some wont need it, I didn't), with Gimp, Krita and Inkscape, to mention some fields.

      I don't need to have "do-it-all" applications like Photoshop. Is convenient and comfrotable, but never essential. Have done so when consider just Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as the only options, but have zero real issues in doing the same projects with a combination of Affinity Photo and Designer and CSP, Krita for the painting side (krita only, if at some point CSP becomes subscription-only. Still, I don't think that will happen, subscription would loose the average joe manga comic creator (there are tons...) which forms a large part of their user base. They did so in the iPad, but I believe is only happening in that device).
      About the bundled stuff in CC...yeah, but much of it is not as "brilliant" as Photoshop is in comparison. I can sport for you a ton of issues in the main apps. And I have handled professionally at several companies things like Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash (Animate CC), etc.Kind of dislike this commercial method of forcing me to a pack, -is not just the subscription mode issue, one can't customize a bit more the thing, and so they can force to charge more- I can think of several tools quite better in alternative. Photoshop and After Effects are mostly the only exceptions, the way I see it. And I believe this is changing. We already had alternatives with some aspects of graphic production in Corel and Xara packages. It simply covers more workflows and areas this new Affinity thing. But is way too young just yet. It is more about of what it is -imo- going to become. ;) (is 100% fucntional for me, and most people, but we are speaking about competing in a 1 to 1 feature per feature, Adobe has decades of advantage.... but there's some point where you have ENOUGH features and stability as to use for ANY professional work. tell me the truth... You could VERY well do all your work with just an Adobe PS CS6... a lot of people can. Heck, I could pretty well even with an Adobe PS 7 ! Line art... not so much, not even with CC 2018 and its new smoothing. I mean, some of use can even without smoothing: the average inker , even being awesome in traditional paper inking, might be obly really able to ink professionally with a wacom if using CSP, or Krita's stabilizer. But have to admit, from what I've seen, they've done a remarkable work in the new stabilizer in CC 2018. For digital painting... none of this affects a lil bit, imo. Indeed, I recommend alwats to set off the stabilizer for all what is not pure line-art, comic inking. Even more, after inking so, so much digitally, i find my self lately disabling way too foten all sort of stabilizing in every application, CSP included. Still extremely handy for long full canvas curves, or straight fast lines, etc)
      Well, about line stabilization, I have a very different pov here, maybe... Is not that i feel kids need to use stabilization to avoid learning how to draw -I know you are not saying that- it is more about old farts like me, having done all sort of inking in traditional paper, and after me doing a very careful scientific even experiment, I could proof to myself that it was NOT on me or my whrist, lol... Simply, wacom and similar technology is yet eons away from hand's accuracy and steady lines that you can get with traditional inking. Stabilizers are IMO there to compensate for this temporary -it'll get better and better- hardware limitation! So, YES, please, give people stabilizers. I am starting to use third person here as the more I ink digitally, the more i convert it to what I used to do in paper. I'm surprising myself specially latest months, disabling constantly all sort of stabilization, as practice WITH stabilizers on has this effect. You have it easier to learn yor steady lines to land well! Don't ask me how or why, as I don't know. But it worked for me. And I don't even have a cintiq or alternative, I have a very old Intuos Pro. (just huge size).
      Anyway, IMO there's NOT were lies the essential part of the drawing training. Is in perspective, anatomy drawing, capability to see the light and shadows in a scene, and use them for your purposes, the overall composition, etc. This is only possible through studying and super hard traning, being very demanding with one self results. No other way round. I keep on seeing a bunch of art-influencers doing tons of recommendation on line style, inktober freakism, overload of brushes (while all needed is a good round brush, no over soft brushes, and clever use of flow and other settings) , tons of importance to color, but leaving ok a face or body proportion, or building line gone to blatant error territory... The fundamentals is what new artists, and even old ones, leave often totaly unattended, and that's like running backwards, IMO.
      So I would not -sorry- agree with the spell checking theory. Even more, you can use just as well both helpers in the right or wrong way. I do use the spell checker, but making a very conscious effort (not in this long text, and you'll clearly notice that and the blazing speed I am wrting this at) , and mainly in English as is not my first language (in Spanish I don't need it)) on paying tons of attention on when and why I am being warned about a typo. It helps me fix it in my memory, and even makes me think on why is not logical, by construction, that it'd be like that. Stabilizers are the same (in a way, the analogy works) . You can use it in a dumb way, just letting it make for you firm lines, or you can use it for the extreme cases where you also know in paper would be able to trace a firm line/curve, and can use it trying to diminish each the factor of smoothing (just like when you try to memorize the correct spelling instead of just fixing the word with zero brain work) . This is the way I'm getting more adapated to the way Wacom "wants" my lines to be. i expect I might need to adapt my inking back again at brush and traditional paper, as is certainly a different way of moving your hand and etc. The othe rday I inked an entire piece with stabilization disabled. Thing is : PS with zero stabilization, and CSP with zero, CSP still has lines much more steady. Is it that it's still stabilizing ? I don't think so: i am just convinces PS adds some extra jitter, due to the way it registers samples of the internal grid or something.
      " I like the fact that you called the Intuos 'crappy'. haha. I've got an Intuos Pro here at the moment and it has the Pro Pen 2. "
      Intuos Pro 4 here....it's a long way from there, conside that... Is like... ten years ? Not sure.... ;)
      " The specs of this tablet are above the sensor & pen specs for the 27QHD Cintiq."
      Still , the pen for that tablet is better than intuos 4, and if you have used intensively an Intuos, you know that the hand screen-eye coordination makes a world of difference... Even so, I have such an strong habit with this system, that I realy am fast with it... Had a cintiq, but dunno if I'd be faster...
      " No matter if you're drawing line-art or painting with digital oils etc, it comes down to the app and the different brush engine"
      trust me... there are really laggy brushe engines in some applications. This can be such a accuracy loss compared to what your hand is capable off (loss in hardware control is there already, both in a cintiq and intuos and on top of that, terrible loss in some brush engines I've tested. (not speaking about PS or Painter, of course))
      " & brush you're using as to the result you're going to see from the tablet. Slim lines with a complex brush which takes advantage of tilt and rotation is only going to get great results out of a tablet with tilt & rotation abilities. Your line art brushes are nice clean black lines so you're going to notice the better results more from a higher quality stylus. Pressure plays a big part in this too."
      You can certainly build very naturally weighthed lines, very lifely and expresive, even just with pressure sensitivity and good accuracy. There are tons of techniques for this.
      " Wacom has over 8k and it's nearest competitor is 4k+ so that makes a big difference to your line art when you add Wacom's tilt, rotation & float activation on top there! Most top apps take advantage of this and you can get some beautiful line art with the Pro Pen 2 on the Intuos above other tablets out there. "
      Most artists have tons of other issues to worry about before than the weight and expressivity of the line, and ultimately, this is note really relevant in digital painting, realistic treatment, etc, imo... For comic line art, yep, but you can also carefull to a build up proccess, and many of the best inkers in traditional inking , in all history, used this method with ink and brushes, among others.
      " As for Wacom's price, I believe companies should charge whatever they want to charge. "
      Hmmm. yeah, I am much more of a democratic grunt there. I don't feel as right that poor people can't access to good education material, be it for school or for professional training. Or simply, artists very in the limit of starvation -and trust me, some of them are better than you and me, is largely unfair- i don't think this is right. I have read from people from Affinity that they want to do apps that normal people can afford. I applaud this so loud as my hands allow me to... Reason why, I think is even essential that alternatives emerged. It's amazing advantage for us, users. Even for those staying with Wacom or Adobe.
      " I don't cry myself to sleep because I can't afford that Lamborghini Diabilo in Sunburst Yellow from my childhood... I'll find a way to buy it. We all need goals in life."
      That's fine to say for you and me who counted with advantages from birth, like just the often forgotten fact that being born in a first world country is a HUGE advantage. You have access to every thing, and I do, too. I don't "cry" (well...) for me, I cry for them. For my selfish purposes... nah, I don't care. I can paint with a small intuos. I can ink with or without

      Guess you'll have to move to Windows then. lol. That's what I've done now after 20 yrs. They lost me after never giving us touchscreen or letting us have the Pencil or SD cards on the iPhone. They're just tight with the tech. For all the money you spend on Mac you can have a much better life on Windows and Android and you gain so much without loosing a thing. 99% of your licenses can be transferred over too without having to buy any new software too!

      Lawrence Mann I have a pc which I build 9 months ago with the Ryzen 1700x and 1080. However my Mac is for media and such so it would’ve been nice to have the dell work on it since I no longer have a windows laptop. Lol.

      Dell are are PC company so I doubt they are going to bring out Mac OS drivers any time soon. They want you on Windows so you might buy a Dell computer at least sometime in the future! lol. Makes sense. I did ask them a few times about Mac drivers but they didn't seem keen on the idea but it wasn't 100% no.
      What about the drivers? All good there? I might suggest trying using alternative cables if you have those options. There are other ways of connecting the Canvas obviously. This might help! Other than that you might have a defective stylus. Contact Dell and see what they say. Hope that helps.

    I use both Mac and Pc
    And for the reason that they are only making it available for PC users i would never buy it.
    It is crazy that they are making something there are so expensive and that i can not be used on both PC and Mac.
    then i will happyli pay more gor someyhing there can be used on both platformt
    So it is Cintiq all the way
    Also if i would like to sell it later on.
    It is mutch harder to sell the Dell Canvas because it only works on PC
    Lets us be honste most designer/aritst are using a MAC
    and therefor again is the Cintiq the right choice again
    If you think you will sell it again.
    When there is a new better model in town
    The only thing i don't like about the apple ben is the battery.
    Other vise i think it is the best stylus there are made for a Tablet
    Like a Ipad and so on.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically the Apple Pencil is nowhere near as good as the Wacom Pro Pen 2. It has no where near as many levels of pressure (by the thousands) and the rotation is rubbish in comparison. It can't do floating operations. It's just not as good in specs even if you like the feel of it. I hate the feel of it as well so for me it really looses.
      A lot of creatives are moving over to Windows in recent years. Apple has lot a lot in the past three years. The touch & pen technology, devices like the Surface compared to the MacBook have changed a lot of minds and those numbers are going up all the time. The Surface Book 2 now out strips the latest MacBook Pro by quite a lot. Apple have lost a serious amount of ground in terms of pure specs that even the hardest fanboy can no longer deny. It's tough but there it is.
      I agree and I was the first person to ask Dell about Mac drivers because I felt it would be for the best but I do understand their line of thought. I understand yours too and why it forces you to buy the Wacom but if you're not interested in going to Windows then Dell aren't going to make equipment for you. It's not a massive deal. There's some great Wacom tablets coming out for you including the Cintiq Pro 32" Be aware though, from talking to tech companies, there is more Windows only software & hardware for creatives on the way!

      I agree for computers tables Wacom stylus is best.
      But for the Ipad I have not tried a stylus there better then the apple pen.
      Can you get a wacom stylus that you can use on a Ipad ?
      I totally agree in that Apple is lacking behind in what they are doing.
      And they are not focusing enough on there pro users.
      it is like they focus on he high school / college users there want to be cool.
      That is also then reason to that i have both PC and Mac.
      I bought the PC 4 months ago
      Before that i have been using Mac for about 8-9 Years
      and i know that there are a lot of designer/artist there are moving over to PC as you are saying
      But there is still a lot of fan boys there will not no it.
      Perhaps it will look different in 2 years time

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, Apple won't let others play with them on their tech. They only let certain partners get involved. That's another thing I just don't like about them. Plus Apple fans are mostly purest who just want the original Apple product and don't like to buy third party so most other companies stay clear of making for Mac these days. It's like the Apple Watch strap. There are very few companies making straps compared the Apple Watch 1. Sales of third party stuff has just bombed. If Apple sold a Wacom tabled that was half as good for doulbe the money it would sell like hotcakes :D hahaha.
