    This thing is huge. I had to rearrange my office to fit this 27" monster on my desk. That's definitely a big part of the appeal of drawing on something like this. But there is a lot more to love here to. To start it's using Wacom pen drivers so you're getting the full Wacom experience at a lower cost.

    Ask Dell next time to send you a bigger office as well, for review purpose. Solves the keyboard issue in a reasonable way.

    man the more I see about this stuff the more I like it. It's huge, sure, but I imagine that it allows you to rest your arms comfortably on it. Also I already have a 27" dell monitor and the color reproduction on this is a beast, I bet it would work pretty well with the canvas.
    Also: Man you are getting good with your drawing!!! Keep going!

    Another thing to consider is Dell support is really responsive. Wacom support is awful. I tried to get a Cintiq Hybrid Pro when it came out. After I ordered it, they contacted me that they didn't have anymore available, so was put on a wait list. 2 months later it was available. Their shipping left it on my front porch on a rainy day. No alert it was delivered. Anyone could have jacked it. After that, getting any support and later replacement cables (unavailable in the US, I had to get them through Craigslist) was a nightmare. Any problem I've ever had with a Dell, they have tons of organized info online or I can call and they fix it. I look forward to seeing editing with Premiere on this Canvas. Thank you.

      I wonder too when I see Wacom's stands. Are they gold plated?

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people don't like Wacom stands. They do basically take over your desk.
      However, I think the 24hd/Ergostand is great. It's just super heavy duty. The positioning is limited due to its lack of any springs and pneumatic systems but for me that's never been a problem.
      The fact that you can comfortably lay a 27 inch screen 10 inches from the edge of your desk and basically in your lap without worrying about tension in pneumatic systems and imbalances is really great. It does the job. It does it well.
      I did have to RMA my 24HD once and it cost $200 in shipping due to the weight and size of said stand... That's certainly one con. Haha.

    Great review Brad. Definitely a hot price tag for this, but they can do better with the expensive stand. Would've been a buy for me if they provided the mounting brackets with the purchase!

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the mounting bracket was definitely and afterthought. When they first showed it they envisioned it always on a table as a second monitor and they got a ton of feedback saying that nobody wanted to use it that way and so the stand and the brackets become extra :(

    Your reviews of these devices are the best format. You talk over the video while you actually use the device real world in the background. I am so tired of all the posers our in full force that review these and simply sketch a few lines and squiggly lines. Nice to have someone that is an actual artist review this and because of that I respect your opinion.
    Thanks again. What are your thoughts on this over the cintiq pro 16 or 22hd or smaller dell canvas if there is one?
    I’ve only used a large (good size) and medium intuos and also I have a surface pro 3 which I find too small because of the resolution.

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I havn't used the Cintiq pros yet, but I have used the mobile studio Pro which has the same kind of screen/pen. The one super nice thing with the cintiqs is that their is less space between the glass and the screen so the displacement of your cursor is almost non existent in the center drawing area of your screen. The 16 is also much higher resolution. The Dell Canvas still has that older screen to it.Also I found when I'm drawing I loved the Canvas, but when i was doing anything else it really got in the way. It's almost to big for me.

  • @redemptling
    @redemptling 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Brad, love the reviews!
    I actually have a Dell Canvas and it is awesome-also this review was super informative for me before I got it. One thing though, that Dell has not really advertised either well or correctly, but did send as a comment on another review-the Canvas has 4096 levels of pressure. That doesn't really matter much to be honest (I also do a lot of inking and...well...it just works :D ), but I am mostly saying it to point out that the tablet is pretty much a middle ground between the older Cintiq models and the new Pro models. Also touch is spot on, once one of the windows pen/touch functions is turned off (something to do with the pen acting as a finger, together with your hand....it made for a lot of lags in palm rejection).

    how effective is the anti-glare screen? I work at an office that insists on turning on ALL the overhead lights which are set in rows across every single desk which reflects a shiny bar of light right into my eyes. My current solution is a small table that I put on top of my desk that I'm drawing underneath (In between the top of my desk and the bottom of the small table) and needless to say this is rather awkward lol

    Could a keyboard fit below the canvas with leg opened? (not completely flat on desk) I only need to use CTRL, ALT and SHIFT combined with the pen for 3D, for typing I could use the windows 10 screen keyboard, so almost all keyboard below canvas only showing up the ctrl, alt and shift part of keyboard.

    what do you suggest for small monitor tablets you can actually put in your lap? I have a monoprice 19" but it's super fecking heavy and since I moved, the place I moved to I can't use a monitor arm and it doesn't have a lot of space for a lie down tablet.

    I’m a Wacom Cintiq user, I had a yinova at one point......& it was ok probably for amateur or even student, but I found it didn’t much like a heavy work load as a professional. I have 24 inch but am thinking about upgrading, & a second look at alternatives is worthwhile. I use photoshop, CorelDraw & Corel Painter..... all work spot on with my Cintiq. In Painter there’s brush technology that uses Wacoms art pen rotation, & a lot of my custom brushes are of this type..... Do you know if this tablet supports Wacom pens? if not do they have a pen that has rotation like the art pen? Painter is my main program for painting & illustration, so this would make a big difference to me.

    As a video editor, I’ve been really interested in this. I love the idea of the surface studio, but with such a weak gpu, it’s hard to justify the price. Can you try this with davinci resolve? There’s a free version also if you don’t have it yet. I’d really love to get feedback on how immersive the editing and color grading experience can be with this device. Thanks!

    • @TheKevphil
      @TheKevphil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I agree that the (relatively) puny CPU (and the alternate pen technology) make the Surface Studio problematic. But it sure is impressive-looking!

    Did you notice any issues or erroneous input when using the pen's pressure sensitivity, in particular, with opacity while performing strokes at various speeds? I was reading another review online that mentioned splotchy and inconsistent opacity transitions. This would be rather heartbreaking for me if this was an issue as I was quite keen on getting this device. Thanks!

    You can use something like a logitech g13 to get around the no-place-for-the-keyboard problem. You can bind the keys as you like, plus you can use the joystick axes as zoom in/out and brush size +/-.

    Hello everybody i was wondering if i could get help with my huion kamvas gt-190. I installed the 12.3.7 driver for win10 pc And it registers the pen on the graphics monitor however I can only use the pen on 1 monitor at a time. For example if I drag a program from one window to the other with the pen it will get stuck at the border. The only way I can get it to work on the other monitor is to go into the display settings and set that monitor as the main monitor ( and then use the tablet to control the mouse on the other screen). I have to switch it back and forth like that in order to use it on the tablet or on my other monitor. Is there a way to fix this or is this normal? My main monitor is not a touch-sensitive screen . I can drag programs just fine with my regular Mouse but not with the pen.

    Brad, I'm seeing a few artists complaining about the Dell Canvas's inability to create smooth gradients when using XL brushes and blending to the point they look blotchy. Did you find this to be true as well? I DID notice that those individuals were testing it in Photoshop which I would never use for drawing anyway.

    I’m really excited about this! What did it for me is that you could keep the “touch” on - because things like palm-rejection is my biggest question/issue with spending the money for a drawing tablet compared to what any sketch pad costs, and what has so far is made it not worth it for me.
    Cuz honestly, my Palm is an issue no matter WHAT art I’m doing, or what it’s going on! Lol, I had to MacGuyver my own protective glove as a kid before they started making them to sell because everything I did smeared, and I figured I was the only one because y’know the Mona Lisa doesn’t have any muddy palm prints on it! But with an uber sensitive touch screen that minor irritation can become much harder to deal with.
    Of course at these prices, it’ll probably be a year or two from now when newer ones are out and this one dips in price that I can finally afford it, lol

    Thank you Brad, this is helping clear up a lot of questions i have for the Canvas.
    Any word on any 4k specifications in the future for dell?
    It seems like Wacom is delaying the 24 and 32 4k modules that were set to be released this month. Also, this question goes out to Brad and anyone else that is in the Graphics communication industry; when it comes in terms of standard of design, do you feel the 4k being the new benchmark for graphic designers, or is it jumping ahead of itself?
    Because the price tag and specifications are leaving me in a standstill. I was hoping for a drop in devices that remained older, but that is a far fetch thought. Do you believe Wacom is in control of the market? I see many are waiting to see what they release.

    One element I was looking for (but not finding) in all the reviews of the MS Surface I've watched was how the screen surface was bearing up to use, was it at all scratched or marked after intense use of pen and dial? This Dell Canvas review also missed this critical information, at some point your kids are going to try drawing on it with a real pen it would be good to know it would survive unscratched/marked?

    Hi Brad, love your videos. You have helped both my wife and I (both digital artists) with some tough decisions in the past. Our friend recently bought a refurbished Dell laptop. Dell inspiron 5758 17" Laptop i7 5500U and we discovered it has a handy touch screen., and also supports a few stylus pens like the dell stylus and I think one or two more. They are talking about 1024 and on some 2048 levels of pressure. With a 17" display, if she buys a stylus, this looks like it could be a really interesting and cheaper alternative to the surface pro or similar. Have you ever tried one of these setups? or reviewed one. be interested to know. Many thanks, Russ

    Honestly I switched from an Intuos 4 medium to a Huion Q11K and while I had to give up a lot of comforts Wacom offered me (basically all buttons cause the Huion ones just don't work as well as Wacom's and pissed me off to no end,) the difference between 2048 and 8192 pressure levels was more than worth the change. So I can't really agree on the pressure level thing.

    Owned the Cintiq 27 inch and it was alright, but still the picture quaility was not satisfying so I had to sell it. Also since they removed the neck part and made it to an accessory it is to stationary (unless you wanna buy that too) and it just makes it feel like a big bulky thing from the 90s with gigant bezels that is a unecessary space hogger, if they made it completely palmrejecting or if it is non touch which is one of the versions that would not be an issue. But, again the quality sucks compared to a good regular computer monitor, so I cant imagine how the old one must have sucked even more.

    Good review, Brad! After going back and forth, I finally decided to keep my keyboard directly in front of me, and work on my Cintiq 21" at a pretty steep angle. I understand that's not an option with the Canvas, but like you, I use the keyboard a LOT, especially with Clip Studio Paint. It occurs to me that the Canvas, with its wide, all-around "bezel", probably has a bigger footprint than Wacom's upcoming 32" Cintiq will have. I'd love to get the latter, but unless I win the lottery... ;)

      Kevin Phillips if you can squeeze your Clip workflow into 13 shortcuts + 3 for modifiers = 16 keys then this is an ok solution to attach to the side of the screen

      Thanks, Stefan! That strip is VERY cool. I tried using the 32 built-in buttons when I first got my 21" Cintiq. But it doesn't address using _other_ programs. Learning 32 functions for CSP is one thing, but _also_ trying to remember a setup for Photoshop, Illustrator and whatnot was too much strain on my tiny brain. ;)

    Would like to know about parallax - how 'thick' is the screen/distance from pen tip to cursor..?

    • @mbaldiwala
      @mbaldiwala 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dennis, the parallax should be really low, if any at all. For Canvas we have the touch panel direct bonded to the glass and the thickness of the device itself is only 23mm. That is one of the most important differences with the Wacom Cintiq products, so I'm glad you asked that. Please email me at munira_baldiwala@dell.com if you have more questions.

    Another thorough video, Brad!
    So, no drivers, no workie with Mac, huh?
    This would be nice to on my Mac, but am afraid that even with proper Mac drivers, I may not have a compatible video connection.
    I'm running an older late 2009 iMac.
    I've watched many of your other graphics tablet/monitor reviews, and my big problem with most of the current crop of under $1000 graphics tablet monitors is whether or not there is a compatible video connection for older model Macs, like mine.
    I have been very interested in many of the Huion graphics drawing monitors, but the potential of not having a compatible video connection has prevented me from pursuing these graphics monitors further.
    I have been using my iPad Pro with Astropad with my older iMac as my only real option.
    Alongside my iPad Pro running Astropad, I am, also, using and programming a Griffin PowerMate to use with my iPad Pro and Astropad as a very viable hardware substitute/alternative for the functionality of the Dell Totem or Microsoft dial.
    Easy to program, I currently use this with Photoshop, Painter, and Affinity Photo and I am currently setting this up to work with Clip Studio Paint and MediBang Paint!

    OR newer, updated version for newer Macs than mine.
    www.amazon.com/Griffin-PowerMate-Multi-Media-Bluetooth-Connectivity/dp/B00IRDRL4K/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1508268308&sr=8-5&keywords=griffin+powermate
    Works very similarly to a Microsoft Surface Dial or Dell Totem

      Your mac has an mini displayport connector that can be simply converted to a full sized displayport, so it should support most new monitors with resolution maxed at 2560x1600 including this one. (Of course without drivers it will only work as a regular monitor.)
      Alternatively you can buy simple adapters to convert it to HDMI or DVI, so it should work with a huion.

    Too bad there's no mac driver. But you might get it to work on Mac on a basic level using the touchbase driver.
    I use an Iiyama T27 touch screen in my recording studio and I love it. I also use it to edit video using iMovie, and eventhough iMovie is not meant for touch, the design methods that Apple use for a programme like that are already very touch friendly to boot, so the main problem is that it doesn't respond to gestures. The touch base driver may help with that though, I don't own it.
    All in all, I think a touch slab like this together with a standard vertical display, is going to be very appealing for both audio and video editors.
    For that group, I'd prefer that slab to be smaller and ultra wide (say 25" 21:9, that would sort of line the screen up with your 27 19:6 horizontally.
    That's just handier to display a mixer and edit timeline, but allows for room for other peripherals OR, to have that second display to be a touch display, at sat 45º to be still well within reach.
    Try to put a second touchplay within reach behind this canvas and you'll find it won't be a comfortable experience, I reckon.

    Pro tip for anyone wanting to buy this but doesn't want to pay the insane VESA / Stand prices. I got a guitar stand (Konig & Meyer Heli2) which cost me 20 bucks and it allows me to put the screen up vertically when I don't need to draw on it. The guitar stand also allows me to position it on an angle so I can still draw without having to put it down. Great solution imho.

    4:45 Man that delay!!! yeah I'm sticking with my intuos pro until they up their game with this technology (which may never happen but still I have hopes now that wacom is starting to loose it's monopoly). But really screen tablets haven't really progressed much since the og cintiq, they just up the resolution and pen pressure (really anything past 2048 is just overkill) and call it a day.
