  • If you have a Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Touch or a Dell Canvas 27" then you might be looking for the perfect Ergotron monitor arm. I get asked in the comments all the times which desk arm is the right arm for the drawing tablet and how to pick an Ergotron arm. The Standard LX Ergotron arm is the most affordable arm available and I get asked a lot if the Ergotron LX will work with the Wacom 27QHD or Dell Canvas. I have to say NO. But I thought I'd make this quick video to explain why it's not and to help you choose the perfect arm for your tablet - no matter what tablet you have!

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW I'm sharing your videos with all my classmates who are thinking to get a second monitor to read their music composition scores in Sibelius (portrait mode!)/or film clips to score outside of their DAWs. I did purchase and set up the Ergotron Sit Stand arm after watching ALL your videos, which helped me every single step of the way - from purchase to end caps! Thank you! :) My arm is bolted up the middle through my QuickLok Z Keyboard Stand's 4"x2" steel accessory bar, which looks precarious, but everything is beautifully SOLID! I wish I could send a photo as it's absolutely stellar!! I did turn the base mount around to give myself more depth from my synth and ..did I say it's SOLID??? =D Thank you again for all your help! :)

      Happy to help. The 13HD is a good tablet but it is a little small - what size are you thinking of?

    • @CliffordsStudio
      @CliffordsStudio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I was thinking about upgrading to the Wacom 27" QHD without touch since its going for a pretty good deal right now, however I was debating on sacrificing the extra 3" and going with the new 24" (when it comes out) since it will be more "future proof" with usb C and 4K (I know future proofing is kind of a gimmick, but I still wouldn't mind having the newer device.) And yea I like the portability of the 13HD however it is pretty small but also pretty cumbersome once you consider having all of the additional cables and two devices.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All fair points. Those extra 3" might make a big difference. Grab a couple of sheets of (big) paper and measure them to size. Compare the 27" to the 24" and see how you feel when you have them both in front of you!

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but that's just on a monitor right? Not a drawing tablet? There's a difference. If that were a tablet then all that movement would constantly weaken the grip of the arm. Unless you want to have to tighten it up every 20mins of use then you'd need a stronger arm.
      Just out of interest, did the Hama arm come with a guarantee? That's a strong reason why I choose to use Ergotron, because they have a good guarantee and product testing, quality control etc. That's important when you're mounting a device worth thousands of dollars on it - at least to me.

    After a year with the Ergotron LX, I got myself the Cintiq Ergo stand. The wobble on the Ergotron was too much, the Ergo stand is very stable on the desk.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now you know why it wobbled! It was never built to hold a 27" tablet. I love the look of the ErgoStand but you do loose out on the rotation. Also, one thing I have to tell people a lot is not to lean on their tablets. Even though you can't see it, you are potentially damaging your tablet's screen if you put too much weight on it when you lean on it.

  • @_nass8427

    i have an xp pen pro 24 (10kg) so heavier than cintiq 27qhd (9kg) , and it's ok with the basic ergotron, what most of people doesn't know is that there is a screw a little bit hidden! (on the bottom of the head) for the tension of the ergotron...so it can hold it in the air without any problem, but for a complete stability when i'm drawing, i think i will put the tablet on something on the desk; maybe a sort of pillow...my setup is still wip!...

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure how anyone would miss the tension screw. It is clearly covered in the step-by-step manual. That said, I know a lot of people don't bother to read manuals but that's their own fault. haha.

    Question! The ergotron site says the LX Desk Mount Arm can hold up to 25 lbs, and with the 27" QHD being 19.8 lbs, that should be more than enough to hold it right? Why can't it handle it then?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Monitor arms are made for monitors and not drawing tablets. You should never use an arm when it's at or near the top of it's weight capacity, simply because monitor arms are not made to be leaned or rested on and this isn't taken into consideration when those spec's you've quoted are written. I know this because I've talked directly to Ergotron HQ about it on several occasions. That's why both Ergotron and myself suggest arms that support a larger weight.
      In addition, I'd like to add that some artists do add extension arms to the LX. These extensions reduce the weight capability of the arm further but most people do not know this.
      Hope this info helps! I have gone over this in the comments a few times before so it's worth reading through for additional info. It's also worth checking out my Ergotron Playlist. Some info there about picking arms etc!!

    So if you buy the HX or LX HD arm, you won’t need to buy a vesa bracket for the 27QHD? Will the arm have to be attached at the side (off centre) because the Wacom hole spacing, and does that affect experience? Thanks:)

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      27QHD has a 200x100 VESA but the Ergotron arms have a 100x100. You might need an Adaptor. I do recommend having this mounted in the centre. I have tried both. Balance is certainly better. I've got videos on The Ergotron arm install and a video just about VESAs in my Ergotron playlist. You can also find more in my Cintiq 27QHD playlist too! I don't know if its such a good idea to mount such a heavy device on a stronger ergotron arm, if the lewerage force is then applied to your desk. How stable has the table to be then not to crack after a while?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assure you that I know fully what I am doing Pikaia. In fact, if you talk to the folks at Ergotron via Tritter of Facebook they'll tell you that they often send people my way for advice when it comes to mounting tablets on arms!! I've tested more tablets with more arms than probably anyone out there. haha. I've got a bunch of videos on the topic as well. It basically comes down to weight vs size and you can find the max limits for each arm on the site and in the specs. However there is also the factor of how the user works on the tablet. Many people lean on their tablets which is bad because it damages the tablet's screen (even through you often don't see that damage straight away) and it brings additional weight. I have a specific video all about choosing the right arm for your tablet. Trust me though... I've got this ;)

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HX is a stronger arm with more support but it doesn't have the same range of motion it has to be said. It's only missing out by a slight touch but it's up to you! Don't lean on your tablet and you'll be fine - that will potentially add to the risk of damaging the screen or scoring it over the years anyway. I still rest mine on my knees or desk even though it's on the Ergotron for that super extra support! Hope that helps!! #ShareTheVideo ;)

      Hi there,@@LAWRENCEcanDRAW, thanks for all of your info and excellent advice. On the above comment, are you saying that when in standing position, if I tend to draw (on my Cintiq HD 27) with any force on the glass I'll need to put something under the whole thing to firm it up? I wouldn't say that I lean on my screen, but my drawing hand is certainly pushing with a little force against the glass. I'm asking as I'd like to buy the LX you describe, but I'm fearful it will be wobbly to draw on. You mention resting it on a desk or you knees - so in standing position, what do you do? The short answer is ... YES!!! I have my Dell Canvas mounted on the AmazonBasics monitor arm, which is the Ergotron LX arm re-branded for Amazon to sell, just less expensive! The Canvas stays in place on the arm and I have plenty of room to tighten the screws for more tension should I need it. I know others that have their Cintiq 27QHD on the Ergotron LX and it does just fine. I agree that the HX and the other arm you are promoting are nice and more hefty, but the LX will certainly do the job with either the Cintiq 27QHD or Dell Canvas mounted on it.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the manufacturer, the LX standard arm (no matter which brand name you slap on it) cannot support the weight/size and that is good enough for me. If they don't trust their own arm with it then I wouldn't either - More so when Amazon takes away that amazing Ergotron warranty. Who knows what manufacturing differences there are in the two. Different metals, bolt qualities etc.

    • @argentarts5858
      @argentarts5858 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the manufacturer and Amazon, the Ergotron LX can support monitors up to 32" and up to 25 pounds in weight. The Dell Canvas is a 27" monitor (31" across) and weighs 18 pounds (a bit more with the VESA bracket). So, yeah, it can indeed support the weight and size according to the manufacturer and since it is installed on my desk doing perfectly well, then I can bear witness to that.
      The AmazonBasic arm is IDENTICAL to the Ergotron LX arm. The only difference is the branding. Oh, and they come only in black instead of chrome or white.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because it looks IDENTICAL it doesn't mean it is. I've requested confirmation from Ergotron. If it is then fine. I'll even be happy to review them. But doesn't the massive price difference seem odd? Like there'd be a reason for that?!?!
      Remember that you are placing extra weight when working on the Wacom tablet. Monitor tablets are just that - Monitor tablets. Ergotron have said several times that these were never designed for Tablets.
      Wacom 27QHD is 19.8 lbs + remote + the weight of you leaning on the tablet over a 12-16hr period. As I said 2k+ of equipment. It's worth not cheaping out of the arm. It's not as if I work for Ergotron here so I've not got too much more to say about it. It's personal preference. I just like to be secure in the knowledge. You can be something out of cocktail sticks if your have a degree in engineering and you trust your genius! Up to you ;D

    • @argentarts5858
      @argentarts5858 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the replies, by the way. I do appreciate them. What I was doing was exactly what you said in your video - comparing the weight and size specs given for the arm with that of the monitor tablet I was going to place on it. The Dell Canvas weighs less and is a tad smaller than the AmazonBasics arm specs. So, according to what you said in your video, we should be good to go. And we are. I draw on mine both while sitting and standing. No issues.
      The Ergotron LX runs just under $150 here in the US and the AmazonBasics arm is $100. There is a reason for the price difference. Amazon buys in bulk at a discounted rate and, as a result, can offer the same arm at a lesser price. This is a very common practice. Companies do this all the time. This is often why you can buy something like a Sony TV cheaper at Best Buy or Walmart than you can at Sony, etc. In any case, the two arms are identical with the exception of color and branding.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you taking the weight of the Dell Canvas VESA mount in to account - that thing is solid!!! It's weight was hard to find as well - especially back in the day - not sure if it's on the spec sheet now. I know it's buried on the comments on my review video.

  • @gerard.athomas2394
    @gerard.athomas2394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is an old review. I just bought an Ergotron LX arm and have mounted my 27" Cintiq to it with zero issues. The LX holds the Wacom fine and it's specs allow for the weight and size of the 27" Cintiq without issue.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is an older review but the arm hasn't changed and neither has that old tablet you bought Gerard. You probably had to tighten the springs up fully to get it to hold in place, which is fine but bear in mind that these arms are made for monitors and not for drawing tablets. The Ergotron LX standard is at the MAX weight capacity holding the Cintiq 27" HD. So, when you also add the additional weight of your forearms, hands etc leaning down on it as you draw... then you are adding weight on the tablet & monitor arm that take it over the weight limit. This then puts extra tension on the springs inside the arm which, over time, will cause the arm to slacken off and the arm to no longer hold up your tablet. You'll probably notice this in about a month or so depending on how much/heavily you lean on your Wacom - you'll have to tighten those springs as I show in my set-up video and as time goes on you'll have to do it more and more frequently because springs get worse and not better.
      I hope this explains why I don't recommend the standard LX for a tablet as large as the Wacom 27". As I said, monitor arms are made for monitors and not drawing tablets so extra allowances have to be made as I point out in many of the videos I've posted on the subject. If it helps further, I have a whole playlist where I show many different Ergotron arms and even one video where I talk in depth about how to pick the right arm for your tablet.
      Enjoy your day!

    • @gerard.athomas2394
      @gerard.athomas2394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW Thanks for the response. I think though it's worth addressing how different people may use a tablet on an arm. Like many, I prefer my tablet at desk level, so it ends up supported by the desk, rather than floating in the air; I use the arm as a way to store and keep the tablet off my desk when not in use. It's also worth addressing that no matter the arm, there will always be a discernable wobble when working on a suspended tablet, regardless how sturdy the arm, this means many people like to chock their tablets so they remain steady while working. In these cases especially, the LX is more than fine, as the Ergotoron LX's listed specifications are a max of 11.3kg / 34", and the Wacom 27" is 9.1kg / 34", so it's 2kg short of max, well within parameters.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your initial issue with my review was that your "LX holds the Wacom fine..." but now you are saying that you actually rest the tablet on the desk. So... yes, if you rest the tablet on the desk then you won't have any problems because you are not actually using the Ergotron arm to it's full potential or pushing it to it's limits - rather, you are letting the desk do all the 'heavy lifting'. I use my three Ergotron arms on my setup in much the same way as you. Sometimes I do rest the tablet on the desk but often it is raised in mid air or at whatever angle is best to work at. I constantly shift all of them around to suit my needs. I shift between sitting and standing throughout the day which helps me through those long periods of working at my desk.
      I'd love to chat about the way other artists are using the arms. I say from experience that too many artists opt for the cheaper standard LX arm when the LX-HD or the HX arms would have been better for their tablet. When you say that "many people like to chock their tablets", I find that this is the reason. For most, they simply didn't know about the finer points that I've covered in my content but for some it is simply a need to save the extra money that leads them to buy the wrong arm for their tablet. I completely understand wanting to save money of course. Ultimately, if you use the right arm then you won't see any wobble from your tablet and you shouldn't have to compensate by resting it on anything. The standard LX was the first arm I used too but when you upgrade and use an arm that is comfortably above the maximum capability of your tablet and allowing for the artist leaning, extra movement and other issues of using a tablet with an arm, then you really see the true benefits to using one!
      You said "no matter the arm, there will always be a discernable wobble". Sorry but this is wrong. You simply need to use an arm which is above both the weight and size capability of the tablet that is being used. Some of the larger arms such as the Ergotron HX arm will not give a user any wobble ESPECIALLY IF that user is well versed in using tablets properly, without putting their weight on the tablet. Also, leaning on a monitor tablet is bad for the screen as that will cause damage over time even if you do not see it slowly happening.
      I will add as a caveat; Almost all artists who use monitor arms with their drawing tablets also use their non drawing hand the hold the tablet / hotkeys which naturally negate any minute wobble that might arise. This is typically because we find it natural to 'hold on' to something we are drawing on.
      You have pointed out the weight of the 27QHD being 2kg under the MAX limit of the LX. Again, that doesn't factor in for the user leaning on the device which will easily go over the MAX limit including that 2kg. Plus, that is a constant shifting weight because the arm is not a fixed device when used with a tablet. Remember that the maximum size is also a key factor here too as that represents important issues for balance and weight distribution. More so, when you lean on a 27" tablet you are leaning on the far sides quite often which multiples the downward force given that this is the maximum sized display. Monitor arms were developed to hold a monitor in a single place where as artists have a tendency to move them around which will add further pressure to the springs. In their normal use with monitors, monitors are very rarely moved in comparison - the max weight limits are made with monitors in mind. Not Drawing tablets.
      If you're resting your tablet on your desk then you don't need to worry about any of that and I am happy that you are enjoying your ergonomic experience. However, if you decide to use the arm freestanding then that information here will help you choose the arm you need. Believe me, it is worth freeing up your tablet and experiencing that entirely different experience.
      I've had conversations directly with Ergotron on this topic and I consulted with Wacom when they were designing the Wacom Flex Arm for the Cintiq Pro (That is the only arm made for drawing tablets btw). I have personally tried and tested a lot of the arms available and know which one is capable of what and which is best for what job. So, I want to point out that I am not one of the many TH-camrs simply reviewing a product after 5 minutes of playing with it. I like to think my opinion is pretty valid on this subject.

      If you look in my Ergotron playlist you'll see the right Ergotron arm for your 27QHD and you won't need an extension arm with that because it has a longer reach! It costs a little more but it's worth it and you save money not needing that extension! Hope that helps!
      I'm going for the 32" That will be great on the HX arm but there might also be other ways of supporting that too. I'll post more info on that nearer the time! Parallax is better but it depends how much you really notice things like that. It really bothers some people and others not so much.

      I think I’ll wait till the 32 and the Pro Engine have been on the market awhile and hopefully (fingers-crossed) the price reduces a bit, that way I can get them together. Besides, I haven’t had major issues with the parallax on my 27QHD, so I’m all good on that front. Also, the fact that it is 12ms has allowed me to use it as a large monitor alternative for gaming with my smaller laptop.

    What do you think about ERGOTRON MX for Cintiq 27QHD? Is it possible to use? Thanks.

      It'll hold it. It's alt the max limit. To check any arm against tablet, compare max weight & max screen size for the arm against the tablet specs. Simply go to the Ergotron site and the Wacom site. Takes two minutes to have that piece of mind. Remember that adding an extension arm reduces the weight capacity you can put on the arm! Have a great day! Hope that helps ;D

      Thanks. My first ergotron arm has been installed at home. I am looking forward to first drawing with it. Have a nice day.

    I see that most of you (if not all) artists use and compliment the Ergotron arms for pen tablets. Can i use a non Ergotron arm for a pen tablet, considering of course that the arm can handle the weight of the monitor?
    Is there anything special on Ergotron products that makes them more suitable for such a use for a Pen Tablet? Are they more versatile or can they adjust on more angles that are better for drawing or anything like that?
    Ergotron products are not available on my country, but i have lots of other choices or normal monitor arms. So i was just wondering.

      Weight and size are the most important aspects. While I will always recommend Ergotron because I know they test rigorously and their warranty is amazing, yes of course you can use other brands. Just make sure the VESA mounts line up. Just ask yourself if you trust putting an expensive tablet on a cheap arm - if it's a cheaper arm that you're going for. I know it's the arm that a lot of people skimp on. Personally I don't want to put thousands of pounds/dollars worth of equipment on a budget arm hoping that it won't crash to the ground.
      No body makes an arm just for tablets. I am trying to convince Ergotron to make an arm just for drawing tablet users. I came up with a list of requirements based on feedback from several videos worth of comments and my own thoughts. If you have any ideas then let me know!!
      Send Ergotron a Tweet or contact them on Facebook - maybe they can help you out about the country issue. Where abouts are you? I'm sure this isn't there fault but rather more of a trading issue that gives issue to many tech companies. I hear this a lot with certain products such as tablets :(

      Well i am going for a Huion 21 inch, since that is all my pocket can handle. So, theoretically it is not an expensive product. But it goes with no asking that i want the tablet to be 100% safe.
      I already have a flexible monitor arm from Icy Box on a 32 inch TV that i use for my gaming stuff. It handles the TV fine, but it is almost at it's limit. The TV is about 5 kilos. The arm claims it can handle up to 9. The Huion tablet i am looking into is no more than 2 kilos. And the arm costs about 70 euros (that must be close to 90 dollars). It is a cost i can handle. And the arm is solid. There is no question of that.
      The Ergotron arms are way more expensive. I have no problem paying for what they are worth. But i am in Greece, so i will also have shipping to handle and if i am unlucky enough, Greek customs too. If with another arm i can do the same work with 100 dollars instead of possibly 400, it is a difference i can not ignore.
      :)

      Hope it works out well for you. Tweet me @LAWRENCEcanDRAW and let me know what you think when you get them both. I've never used the IcyBox arm so it would be nice to hear your thoughts!

      I'm using the AmazonBasics Arm, which is just the Ergotron arm, but a lot less expensive. It's been working great with my Dell Canvas. Since the 21" Huion weighs a heck of a lot less than my Canvas, you would have no problems with it. You'd just have to adjust the tension for the lighter monitor so it's not too hard to move about.

    Do you mean the Ergotron LX HD Sit-Stand Desk Arm? I watched your video twice, and it sounds like you say LX LCD Arm. Unless maybe they are called something different where you are. Overall, great video!
