  • We get up close to Dell's Canvas, a 27-inch touchscreen and Wacom-pen enabled display that's meant to be used in place of your desktop keyboard. Here's how Dell expects artists to use the device in Windows 10, how it works with their rotating dial, and why they think it's different than a Wacom Cintiq.

    I don't understand why companies make these without really considering the market. If I can't instantly hit "Undo" or "Alt" with my left hand at any time, this is useless for me as an artist.
    Why make a less functional Cintiq? Like that's literally all this is.

      The Uber Tuber
      If the dial had like... side buttons? It might be almost as useful as a cintiq's hotkeys. But I'd rather just have a cintiq remote, which I guess you could use with this but why not just buy the Cintiq and have more options?

    • @coburn9109
      @coburn9109 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that would be a good solution, maybe the dial doesn't have buttons because they might be accidently pressed. I would much rather put some hotkeys next to the display as there's plenty room with them bezels. Cintiq is much better especially price wise as well. Btw lovely profile avatar :)

    The Cintiq 27QHD Touch is ~$700 more than this. I don't think it's a revolutionary product or anything, but more competition in the graphics tablet market, especially from larger companies like Dell, will be really good for artist.

      This is more like the first mirrorless camera being advertised as a DSLR. It was better than most basic point and shoots, but wasn't as good as any basic dslr. They reinvented the cintiq, made it with less features that make sense, and are spouting it as a revolutionary idea.

  • @unionpacific8267
    @unionpacific8267 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    So the main selling point is that you have to use a second monitor and that it's laying down all the time? You could use a cintiq like that if you wanted to. At least the way she described it, it seems like a silly product imo. I am however happy to see all the big touchscreen devices coming out lately and another one can't be a bad thing

    • @BrianFaure1
      @BrianFaure1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I'm thinking, like I could see using this only if I had my regular keyboard and mouse laying on top and I could like every once in awhile use the touch features. Only problem is that it's gonna be damn expensive for that purpose for quite awhile but the more that come to market, the faster it will become mainstream.

      "yea, most artist use their cintiq in the vertical position, most of the time, so we designed it to be flat"..
      wait.. what? you just said that most of your target market uses these things in a different position then what you designed it to be? how is that possibly a selling point???

    • @casekocsk
      @casekocsk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe they mean Cintiq was designed to be used with specialized stand like ergotron... especially current cintiq that doesn't have any bundled stand.
      So this monitor is designed to be used to lay flat on table instead, so you don't have to spend more money to buy expensive stand.

    So if anyone is wondering, Cintiq user here, and that is not a Cintiq pen. It appears to be similar to an Intuos draw pen which is their low end consumer pen with no eraser and no tilt or rotation sensitivity. IE a very basic stylus. The 2048 pressure sensitivity is enough to draw with, but it's not a high number considering an actual Cintiq pen does over 8000 levels of pressure in the newest pens, and includes tilt functionality.
    There are dozens of devices out t here that advertise themselves as Cintiq replacements, however after trying many of them, and spending far more money on them, I am here to tell you there is no Cintiq replacement. There are pen tablets, and then there are Cintiq displays, and the two are not even comparable. It's like comparing the ford you drive off the lot, to the ford that wins a Nascar event. Alike in name and having 4 wheels only. The devils in the details.

    We wanted to make a tablet where you have no choice but to look down at your screen to the point where your neck is hurting from looking down for hours. It's such a good tablet, you don't even have an undo button to access easily. The zoom circle thingy has to get in the way while your using it just because.

    • @AaronHendu
      @AaronHendu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But she has coloured hair, close enough? lol Yeah, you could just tell she had zero clue what she was demonstrating. Oh look, it lays flat! Proceeds to even fail at demonstrating that most basic feature, and can't get it to lay flat cause of cables and whatnot. They needed either an artist, or someone who at least know's more about the product than this woman seemed to. Any one with a brain could have noticed that hey, it lays flat, without that being a main talking point. That's literally all I got out of this, is "don't use a keyboard, we have software like these little windows thingies over here!" and that it "lays flat". And that it doesn't go vertical, needs to always be hooked up to a main PC...but those aren't features, just things it doesn't do...Anyway, not like I have the money for something like this now anyway, but lots of people I know use this kind of thing, and I would be interested in something like this once my finances do allow it.

    • @bethanyangelstar
      @bethanyangelstar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally. She didn't even explain how someone might use it AS a keyboard. She said there's no need for a mouse or keyboard with that thing, but she didn't explain at all how you might use it with another screen. How do you use another screen without a mouse input for the other monitor area? And, how might you use it with actual writing programs or even just text stuff in things like Photoshop? I label everything in my programs, but they don't support handwritten input for the text or can't do it very well. So, obviously, I use a keyboard and a wireless mouse in addition to my Cintiq 21UX for my work.
      I would have been able to do far more to show off that thing, and I haven't even touched anything fancier than a 22HD Cintiq (no touch support) at animation college. It's fancy and looks like it could have awesome potential, but I see so many things that make me not want to use it...and no one's answered the questions to make me want to spend that much money on it. Otherwise, I'd probably go to the 27HD Cintiq or a Microsoft Surfacebook for use everywhere.

    I kind of like the idea of the dial thing as something separate, that one could use on their Cintiqs or similar tablets, but they should work work outside of the confines of an application window. Kind of like (or usually) like a mouse wheel works on the applications that it's either over or on focus.
    So sell _that_ and we'll talk.

    Apparently the stylus sensor is cheaper than in the Wacom Cintiq. A user at a forum who was at CES says that it does not sense the tilt of the pen in Photoshop, which is something that his Cintiq does. This means that for instance, you can't emulate a pencil and draw shades when held in one way or draw lines when held more straight.

    • @AurelTristen
      @AurelTristen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      She's talking about the resolution. It's much easier for a computer to draw to one 4k and one QHD screen vs 2 4k ones. And if you are on a lower spec machine, (say, with a HD screen), adding one QHD screen probably won't kill you. The higher resolution your display, the more your video card needs to draw. QHD is actually a great choice because it gives us good pixel density while not being vicious overkill. I can run Photoshop or 3DS MAX at 100% scaling and still see all my buttons and text. A lot of people aren't comfortable with 4k at 100%, so by running it scaled, they're not really taking advantage of the additional screen real-estate.

    Interesting product. I'd like to see a full review. The way it sits is a bit problematic. I'd like the ability to move it out of the way to type, preferably to have the canvas as a second monitor. Still, the idea of having a vertical orientation to the monitors offers some interesting options.

  • @salasart
    @salasart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This would be perfect for me!!. I don't need wacom Express keys because I use Razer's Orbweaver keypad or nostromo (in conjuction with a software called strokeit for pen gesture recognition). I don't need a stand because I already have an Ergotron arm. But I DO want a bigger screen and a touch sensitive one, with an active digitizer that I can connect to my current PC for drawing, painting and 3D modeling. Besides, if the wacom sensor that's underneath the lcd is Intuos 3 compatible it would be freaking awesome, you could buy old pens with all of the cool wacom features like tilt and barrel rotation.
    I say this because I've used 3 pcs, HP, Then 2 Samsungs that had wacom sensors, the old ones that use 256 levels of pressure and I realized that you could buy a Cintiq 18x Compatible pen and use it with them because the tech was compatible. So I use a better pen with these machines, with 2 buttons and an eraser, and it gives a great pen experience, specially if you replace the tip with wacom "flex" nib, which gives you more grip. I also use the same pen with my Samsung galaxy Note, also compatible.
    I also suspect this is possible since the usual wacom sensor that Wacom resell to other companies is only 256 levels of pressure.... unlesss those 1024 are just interpolations of the original 256 levels that go in. I've seen companies do that to make it look better on the specs.
    Though I've owned a Cintiq 12wx before, I never noticed the difference between the Cintiq device with 1024, and my other wacom devices with 256, or the Chinese tablet made by bosto that I use with 2048 levels, or the Intuos 3 tablet I once owned.... once you go over 1024 levels of pressure you just can't notice the difference... I would even dare you to notice the difference under 500 levels.... tilt and barrel rotation do make a difference though....and screen real state ...or an IPS panel... and jitter. I wish they would tell us exactly which digitizer they are using.

      No. It's very different... It's more similar to Cintiq 27. Surface Studio has its own hardware but Cintiq (and this monitor) needs another desktop to run it... So it can outlived your dekstop.
      It also uses Wacom EMR so it's very superior than Studio for drawing.
      Now for the dial, yes, it's very similar... just the dial.

    Pressure sensitivity doesn't mean that much. Anything over 1024 works the same. 2048 is a bit like having 128 bit color when 32 is all you need. What does matter is latency and delay, proximity where the pen is detected, tilt sensitivity, and parallax (distance between pen tip and pixels through glass).

    The Dell Canvas is a cheaper alternative to a Wacom Cintiq of the same size, that doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a Cintiq, but offers plenty of room for those still seeking a quality pen-enabled display in their pipeline.
    There. Saved you 6 minutes.
    Not that I needed a presentation, since I'm familiar with the Canvas already. But if this was my introduction to it, this was a pretty bad presentation. The presentation could've been better, for sure.
    And if anyone is already familiar with Cintiq, we generally already know what this product can do--even the minor stuff, like how to like doodling in emails, etc.
    The best way to sell use artists who are already familiar with Cintiq is to see an artist use the product with a demonstration.
    Partner with Pixologic and show that the Canvas works with ZBrush, by demonstrating a bit of sculpting and maybe how the "Totem" works in context to ZBrush.
    Or partner with Adobe and show us some quick work in Photoshop, and how you can use the 20-finger multitouch to your advantage with group projects.
    Show us how the product handles during a workflow, and explain the features along the way. Don't state the obvious details that aren't really going to sell professionals harboring interest to buy this.
    Though, I don't entirely blame the lady there. It's hard to sell something rather redundant as something not rather redundant. The product is hard to sell, if you're trying to market it as something "new.'.
    Thus why the best way to market this product would've been as something you're already familiar with, but is now just available at a more affordable price. Be straightforward and non-nonsense about marketing this straightforward and non-nonsense "cheaper Cintiq."

    Also, as long as they don't lock out the Cintiq pen, it should work with one. I believe I read this uses Wacom driver but Wacom likes money and the pen gives you nothing really except and eraser. They literally licensed out the same digitizer so there should be no performance hit. You can also purchase the ExpressKey remote which comes with the Cintiq. The new Cintiqs lack buttons as well. Drivers, Vesa mount and pen compatibilty and you save 1k on the same Cintiq. The current flagship 27QHD is the same rez, its not 4k.

Is she saying that you can't mount this to an Ergotron arm or anything like that? Why not give the user the freedom to decide how they want to use the screen like Wacom did?

    I really hate when they try to make us fools, saying things like "this product is a completely new category that doesn´t really exists in the marketplace" and then she presents what is basically just a Cintiq but made by another brand.
    Really, stop, just admit that it´s not "new" and it´s to compete with the leading product which is Wacom and his Cintiq products.
    And from all the interview I didn´t understood one thing: when the pen is touching the screen, does it shutdown the touchscreen function? Because it would be very annoying the screen recognizing the hand and the pen at the same time. I noticed that during the whole presentation she never rests her hand on the screen while holding the pen... I think I don´t need to say that´s not how artists draw...
    And I don´t get what is wrong in having a drawing canvas like this turning into a screen? If you guys had a similar system then you would really hurt Wacom, because it would be similar but 700$ cheaper. But no, you made it just laying flat and the artists will have to buy a second monitor. But I know why you decided to make it just flat, that system to go from horizontal to vertical costs money to produce, right...? Yeah... If you had such a system the price range wouldn´t be that different from a Cintiq 27QHD.

  • @MrAndreSamuels

    This seems like it could have been a great play. The biggest complaint was that the Surface Studio was an under-powered desktop. Creating a screen that could be attached to a separate desktop that would also be cheaper than the Surface was the perfect play. However, forcing the device to stay flat on the desk was a mistake. They should have given it a Surface Studio-like base that can sit vertical or flat but can also plug into a desktop, if only for the sake of space. Giving over your whole desk permanently seems clunky.

  • @_GOV_
    @_GOV_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if this doesn't have a VESA mounting solution it is a no buy from me as I need my desk space as well. I can't have this giant thing laying on my desk the entire time. Which is sad b/c the price point is nice compared to the Cintiq 27QHD

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's a Cintiq 27 + Microsoft pro Surface new thingy...
    ummmm .... I have a Cintiq 27 and I DO use it with 2 other monitors. So what's great about this?!
    I mean I was waiting something new. Wacom already quad-rippled the pressure sensitivity before this hitting the market= 8K+ pressure points. The new Wacom 16 pro has 4K resolution. Plus new improvements on no-lagging and no more of that annoying glass space!!!

    At 2:19 shes moving stuff on the top screen, and it seems very clumsy. as someone who uses my second screen for reference and regular internet stuff that seems like a step back. Maybe I'm wrong, but there are only like 6 seconds in the 7 minute video showing that kind of interaction so its hard to tell. Also it seems like their knob thing slides around when shes twisting it, and she never takes her hand off of it. It looks like it would slide right off the screen. I feel like I would want to be able to take my hand off of it while its still on there. Its pretty, but seems less practical. I have a non wacom display on an arm with a second screen so I don't have to "disruptively articulate up and down and up again" It's not touch sensitive and 22 inches instead of 27, but it does have 2048 pressure levels and is only $600. you can spend that extra $1,200 on a second display and the computer it all runs on.
