@@cinna8772 Menzoberranzan is a major drow city in the Underdark of the Forgotten Realms. If I recall correctlt, Drizz't Do'Urden, the famous drow ranger, was from there.
It is, in effect, the Drow capital city (I believe it's technically a city state?) and was indeed the birthplace of Drizz't. It was founded by a priestess of Lolth (Matron goddess of the Drow and goddess of spiders, mentioned several times in the show already) named Menzoberra the Kinless.

@@erikgratz5539 I don't know anything about undermountain, and all I know about Waterdeep is that it's lords are really shy and are quite fond of tiny wooden cubes. But last I checked Menzoberranzan is a good 1500 miles NE of there, up past the Evermoors, by Silverymoon and the Mithril Hall.
Come on, the Davine dagger reveal showing Walnut to be a "liar" should have ended the debate. They put all this pressure on Kris to lead the narrative when their characters would have moved on to more pressing matters. If "Davine" had attacked K'thriss and fled, they should have beat feet to try and find her.
mrDROCK What about him confirming the dagger went into the focus "because it protects me", then changing the story to "Oh, here it is in my cloak". Walnut is much more trusted than K'thriss by the group, particularly after the cave incident, so when there is a difference in story Walnut would have advantage. By the time he pulls out the dagger, everyone is very suspicious of him and his acting out of character about his focus.
He doesn't do much "prove" Walnut is lying, but shows that maybe she saw something wrong, but by then it was too late. If he pulled it out when she first said it, yeah it would probably work. When he does, damage was already done.
Awesome RP from Chris in the face of so much heavy metagaming from Amy and Kate forcing the narrative to go the way they wanted it to. Only Ryan tried to actually keep his player knowledge and character knowledge separate.
Well, last week's cliffhanger derailed in a hurry. Disappointing because Amy is usually such a good roleplayer, but here she's just like "NOPE NOT PLAYING ALONG".
cloysterd she always brings up table talk and states how "oghh I gotta save this for table talk" she breaks immersion left and right up to this episode. I hope it stops because it ruins the game , I am watching chronologically and hope to see a change of this metagaming bs , Jerry needs to put a stop to it
Metagaming pretty hard in this one but K'thriss did amazing in character. Doner was the only on really trying to play along with him.

The only one acting suspiciously was Walnut if I was playing in this game and my party members started playing like this. It would have most likely have killed Walnut when she 🔥 K'thriss face. (Or maybe I would have laughed at the stupid knife-ears killing each other since I play orcs most of the time.)
G-String If that's the case, you would have already killed K'thriss back in the cave.
G-String K'thriss also acted pretty suspicious and since he tried to kill the party before, I'd side with walnut, too.

Amy pulled some serious bullshit this game with incomprehensible magic wolf powers. Kris played it so well they should have moved on and given him a real chance to enjoy it. The meta is too real here
Providence honestly , the meta is bs so far . Too many episodes have immersion breaking "I need to save this to table top" to only be followed up with bits of what needed to be saved .
K'thriss always gets to stay ingame, too bad he didn't go with the other shows offer, I think he would have been more in his element when compared to these which seem to be a 50/50 dose of metagaming.

I was excited for this to be a great roleplaying episode, and letting Kris act as his body double was a cool idea to both resolve the situation & give him something to do in the interim, but Amy was REALLY determined to make something happen immediately and it kinda took the thunder out of it. The wolf thing almost made sense (they smell different, right? Why didn't that come up in conversation?), but especially that metagaming around moonbeam was really bad while trying to act like the in character reason was about the symbol. There's no way any of them would have been willing to attack K'thriss over some weird thing with his symbol, and it just got progressively like "we're gonna manufacture a reason to attack him before we even create an in character way to unmask him," which they absolutely could have done. Nobody thought it would make sense for their characters to check out the basement during any of this? If I was at that table I'm attacking Walnut immediately as soon as she gets violent towards K'thriss/Davine.
Okay, yes, there was too much meta. But what to be done about it? Jerry should have stepped in and imposed a role of some kind. Let fate decide the outcome and people will be less mad about it. When Rosie asked Devine that question in the cella, I found that to be the peak of the meta. He should have asked for a role to see if she would think to ask that question. Or alternatively , force Devine to make a deception role. Come on now. Can't let players run a riot like that. I love this campaign though I won't stop watching.
I've been through all the episodes twice and while I love the C Team, the metagaming in this episode is a low point.
Wait... so walnuts whole excuse for going after K’thriss was because because the dagger went inside his focus... but when the 2nd one went in she didn’t care at all...
The modifications to the intro were epic.
Worst episode so far. Control Freak Meta-Gamers gone wild. The dagger play was brilliant by K'thriss and should have been respected. Also Rosie's reasons for being suspicious of him are contradictory since this is exactly how the party WANTS K'thriss to act after the last incident, ya know, to NOT go full C'thulhu Mode just because someone touched his pet rock. Also Walnut is literally behaving like a rabid dog that has tried to kill K'thriss TWICE while not giving much of an explanation for it, but Rosie will go along with his murder since she's apparently developed some Thelma and Louise bond with her in the 10 days they've been together. Nice attempt by Donaar to steer the party away from this train wreck.
so if the shoe was on the other foot, and walnut had been copied with alter self, all she would have to say to wipe out their party is "trust me. kill your friend. he's weird." i'm disappointed.

After being attacked by his party MULTIPLE times, "K'Thriss" doesn't focus on dumb stalactite story from a couple weeks ago, or whenever; doesn't matter when. Effectively says" Y'all are attacking me and so did Devine, don't we have more important things to worry about than a fucking campfire story!? (Rosie KILLS "K'Thriss")
Oh, what's that Rosie? K'Thriss is acting weird? It can't possibly be because his own party is attacking, burning, biting, branding, attacking his holy symbol, and distrusting every single thing about him for no reason other than Walnut giving a vague NOTHING answer. Yup, he's acting weird because there's something wrong with HIM...

Rosie and Walnut metagaming kinda ruined this episode, Donaar and K'Thriss were awesome staying in character.

Watching all of these for the first time. Enjoying them a ton! Gotta say though, this episode made me really dislike Walnut so far. Not a fan of how they are role playing all this. The meta gaming made it pretty boring too.
1:02:15 The way Kris delivers this "reveal" straight-faced, not even smirking at the reactions from the table, makes this my favorite part of the episode, hands-down. Perfect acting job! XD

love the feel of this campaign! the chris perkins ones are awesome but this is a little more intimate and slow paced, so the detailed interaction stuff really shines :D
I was a little disappointed that the Devine impostor plot didn't really go anywhere, and them figuring it out so quickly felt a little "metagamey". Buuut, Jerry kinda ruined any chance of true deception when he had that dagger go into Kthriss's focus right at the start, so I'm guessing that was part of his plan, as he didn't want the Devine thing to spiral out of control. A bit of a shame, since secretly, I thought the idea of an 'impostor' in the group would have been soooooooo cool, and was definitely cheering for Dev'thriss a little bit.
Wyatt Knox This right here. Devine proved Walnut to be a "liar", and it was brushed aside. It was clear meta gaming from Kate/Rosie to ignore the RP and still go after Devine. Disappointed.
i dunno about that, rosie was also not very sure of devine after that part about the childhood conversation. that was the tipping point in itself. without that part they might have gone along with devine actually.
I guess Jerry just can't stand to keep a secret. None of the players were surprised when Davine turned on K'thriss last session - they all immediately knew she was a traitor. This time around, Amy is asking questions to test if it's really K'thriss, but Rosie is only supposed to be suspicious about the focus, not his identity. Maybe Jerry thought it'd make for a better show, but it backfired. Just run a game, guys. On a similar note, maybe lay off the goofing around that has nothing to do with the story line. I know it's the Twitch model to just screw around all day, but we're here because we love D&D - we don't need you to be funny all the time. Just play the damn game. One battle every 2 1/2 hours is quite the slow burn.

Kate "I know i'm meta gaming this a little bit". nay nay, you and Amy meta gamed everyone into a corner to your own ends. I know Jerry is all about rules don't matter and it's all about the fun. but at some point he needs to call bullshit and put his foot down.
Honestly, the unavoidable problem is that the whole scene just felt gross. That wasn't fun! This show really stands out for being so driven by the shenanigans of its vibrant characters, and the magic disappears when those characters get reduced to sockpuppets. Full applause to Dev'thriss for pulling out some great moments anyway, and a self-clap to Donaar for trying, but this was a meaningless mess. An opportunity to see a different side of the characters turned into well over an hour of skippable and cringey anti-conversations.
Sigh felt a little disappointed with how the Devine "encounter" went. I guess i got excited by the possibilities and Kris gave some good rp ques. In the end it felt like it got steamrolled buy people just looking for a solution not seeing the narrative potential.
This episode did a big disservice to Davine. Ryan seemed a little put off by it as he wasn't really participating during all the meta PvP nonsense.
Just For Menzoberranzan. That's priceless.
is anyone else extremely perturbed that the fan art that seems to be constantly referenced is not linked? I'd really like to see all this fan art that is out there and my google fu seems to fail me.

Amy withholding plot information, abandoning her companions in the middle of the fight last episode, and then trying to kill “K’thriss” for nonsense meta-reasons really killed what was a good plot. She gets mad about Donaar using something against her in the first episode, then literally tries to kill a party member. Her hypocrisy and “tsundere”(aka excuse to be a jerk to the party) really makes watching this show painful.
The meta gaming was the absolute worst when she literally says she gives advantage to Rosie on saves for future moonbeam attacks because she knows Davine is K’thriss - are you serious??? And Jerry just lets her do it.

I just started watching this series a few days ago and I'm very much enjoying it. I find the overall story to be quite captivating and love how well everyone RP's their characters and how the relationships between them have been evolving each episode . However someone has to nitpick and rules lawyer for you folks. In this episode the Alter Self spell should have been defeated several times. It does not alter a creature's scent and Wolfnut would have caught on to that straight away, knowing the difference between K'thriss and Davine's scents. Many may point out that she's only wild shaped and not actually a wolf, and I call BS on that. Even if she couldn't track by scent, she would be at the least able to tell the difference between their genders and their races. The fight inside the pub resulted in "K'thriss" taking damage, which would have caused him to make a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration on the Alter Self spell. The save DC is only 10, but the possibility to roll low always exists. During the fight in the basement Davine cast Expeditious Retreat, which requires concentration. You can only maintain concentration on one spell that requires it at a time, which would cause Alter Self to end. Everyone in this thread is whining about how much the players were metagaming, I don't think that was the root of the problem. Not knowing how spells and concentration work at all and being thrown a curve ball like this by a guest player, isn't the fault of the regular players or the DM. It was a fantastic play and led to a fun, if unintentional, side encounter and I don't fault the players for wanting their regular traveling companion back before continuing the actual story.

I mean K'thriss reacts out of the ordinary (for K'thriss) once and Rosie is at red alert and won't let it go. Walnut says "trust me" and Rosie is like "k. no more thinking required here".
Unfortunately it felt like Kate's focus was to reveal Devine as an imposter based on player knowledge and I think the story could have been amazing (in an interesting and surprising way) if that wasn't the case

Did the players know K'thriss was Devine? Yes. Would they have been duped for a while? No, once Alter Self ran out the jig would be up. Did the characters have reasons to distrust K'thriss? Yes, and the stranger he acted the more it seemed like the focus was taking him over.
Devine impersonated the one character everyone was on the lookout with. That together with some rule mischief on the part of Jerry and Kris makes me side with the group.

Drink every time Jerry says, "exactly". Call a friend ahead of time so you have a ride to the hospital for alcohol poisoning.
It's very difficult to avoid a metagame when the doppelgänger is already known. This would have been a note passed from DM to player, or discussed out of the room. But to accommodate their Child's Play auction winner, they compounded the difficulty of staying in-character.
Just have fun with it, everyone. This is equal parts gaming and theater. Let's not lose the spirit of the thing.
Also big BOOOO!! for Kate on the terrible meta gaming. Extremely disappointed in the way these events turned out and Jerry is partly to blame here but the onus of what happened is on Amy and Kate. The last hour (roughly) is back to business as usual and is quality stuff.

So... Walnut got upset that the accursed dagger went into K'thriss' focus and so attacked him? After all they had together? When he wasn't being hostile?
This is a pointless comment, but at about the 1:15:30 marker, when Rosie does her opportunity attack, that should just be one attack. The flurry of blows is a bonus action, which is not something you can do in an opportunity attack.
Not that it matters, of course. Anyhow, excellent show, I look forward to the next one.
Yeah the rules always seem to get broken in favor of the players in this show, but that's DM's prerogative. I don't think he is doing it consciously, but just doesn't know the rules. But then, it's fun. Healing word using the spell attack bonus instead of spellcasting ability modifier is hilarious. They're never going to die at this rate :)
Ammo Goettsch you do realize that even in the players handbook that it says the rules are just guidelines and that the story and fun for all the players should take precedent over the rules
Yep, fun is the most important thing here. You know what would have been fun? If the subterfuge had gotten somewhere. Kris did such an amazing job RPing that out, but it just... didn't... take. I mean seriously, he was playing another player playing a character playing HIS character as he would play it. And when he pulled out the extra dagger? Just awesome. Too bad the character dropped so easily. I don't even think the extra punches were needed to drop her, but it's a little sad to think of how much farther that cool little story could have gone.

Painful episode to watch. The metagaming completely ruined what could have been a great storyline. Kudos to Kris Straub for standout role playing.

Just for anyone watching, and if Amy sees this. When you cast "Produce Flame", as that action you can hurl it, or keep it in your hand. If you kept it in your hand, you can use an action on another turn within 10 minutes to throw it. When you throw it, the spell ends.

I loved a lot of this series all for it to turn to a dumpster fire......yes it was the Meta gaming and the girls didn't allow it to unfold.
I understand how it could be hard for new players though.

I found the start really confusing. Jerry didn't really explain how the scene moved from the tavern after the betrayal to the high house. Was it before, was it after? I had to listen a few times then just gave up and let the story move forward.

Why wouldn't the dagger have gone into his focus even if he wasn't an imposter? Seems like it was just drawn to the focus. So basically K'thris would have died in this episode if he wasn't an imposter? Naw, they were metagaming so hard.

I know there's a lot of chatter about the first half of the second game, and I was not super satisfied with how that went down.
BUT I gotta say, I really LOVE the second half of this session. The whole Gremlins 2 vibe with all the wacky mutations and stuff was a great twist on the normal "clear out the rats" adventure quest trope.

OK, fine, because it took me watching this twice before I remembered, but what about Rosie's and K'thris' paired choke chains?
Metagame was annoying as hell, Walnut has been acting weird ever since getting there she refused to exit wolf form and talk, "k'thriss" was doing very well at playing his part. Also if you waited long enough for an imposter to disguise themself as your friend, steal their shit and bury the body, AFTER you were alerted to that an "ally" magic user has betrayed you, you are a useless party. Also Rosie agreeing to trust walnut after from what she could tell was attempt to rip their friends throat out is ridiculous especially with the excuse of trust me. I wont say it is DM's fault cause a DM has to make a call and to stop people especially in that situation and go you dont know that over and over again will never go well because the party has become determined to Metagame the situation.
