Is Super Mario Galaxy 2 a Bad Sequel?

  • Super Mario Galaxy is easily one of the best games ever made, and to follow up it's success, Nintendo released a sequel less than 3 years later under the title of Super Mario Galaxy 2. On it's own, this game is no doubt an incredibly fun experience, but does it hold it up a sequel? That's the question I try to answer in this Super Mario Galaxy 2 retrospective. Enjoy!

    Absolutely not. Yes, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a stepdown from its prequel (story-wise), but opposed to that, the gameplay and mechanics are expanded upon. It is still an awesome game and I love it! It's even my favorite out of the Galaxy games.

      @@ninshu9073 I can’t say I agree. I think the more open design kinda hurts the first galaxy game if I’m being honest. Mario’s moveset just isn’t well suited to open ended levels due to how tight and limited it is compared to 64 and sunshine. More compact and linear challenges suit his galaxy moveset better imo.
      I mean think about it: if galaxy 1 was entirely stages like beach bowl or honeycomb would you really consider it to be on the same level as 64 or sunshine? I feel like it would’ve been considered a huge step down had they gone down that route.
      2’s levels were better thought out imo and made much better use of the power ups. Also it gave us probably my favourite power up in the series: the cloud flower. Absolutely love it.

    Galaxy 2 is not a bad game, not in the slightest! But there is just a magical feeling thats missing in this game that the first game did have though. Galaxy 2 is just more optimized for gameplay, meaning you get to blitz trough the levels. And while the designs get more creative, the first game was more about exploring.

    Galaxy 2 is basically the first game but if you were to trade the atmosphere and story for even better gameplay thanks to the World Map allowing you to get into levels faster, better level design and power ups. While I can absolutely see why others wouldn't like this change, I for one am all for it. I still think Galaxy 1 is a masterpiece, but I definitely prefer its sequel.

      Exactly! Bring in the most iconic gameplay elements of both games and add a couple more..give every single Galaxy a sense of life and a real place rather than obstacles in the sky. I loved Galaxy 1 because almost every level either felt like someone's home planet, or you were on desolate trash. Aesthetic continuity was the driving factor of that first game forsure, and just having that in 2 would've easily made it top the 1st one. But Miyomoto just doesn't think like that apparently. However, perhaps we wouldn't have had such fun gameplay if they derived resources to make a story. Seems as if we will never know

    Man its hard. I genuinely think if both games were to combine it would've been the perfect Mario game ever. I truly think the power ups and gameplay in Galaxy 2 are just iconic and so fun, and if they just had that fun with the emotion Galaxy 1 brings, then thats truly your perfect game. I never even knew 2 was a retelling, but now that I know this it just hurts! The Evil Luma using Mario and going for revenge, somehow bringing the comet observatory right next to Marios head and being able to visit it from a launch star (or maybe even designing it into a level while its under attack couldve been a cool stage for this betrayal and boss fight.) Ditching the big purple loaf to have Rosalina be the new tour guide, and maybe even continue her story from the first game or having a new element for closure. I want to love Galaxy 2, but what they dont do really hits too hard for it to be considered a good sequel imo. Revisiting Galaxy 1 recently after 10 some years left me disappointed to find out that some of my favorite Galaxy memories (gameplay wise only) were from 2!

    Wow, I watched your Super Mario Galaxy video just yesterday. Great timing!
    In my opinion, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better game mechanically. However, Super Mario Galaxy is great for an amalgamation of things. The atmosphere, soundtrack and story were just as important as the gameplay to make Super Mario Galaxy what it is and, aside from the OST, the sequel lacks in these departments. I don't even feel in space while playing Super Mario Galaxy 2.
    In any case, it's still a very good game.

      I highly disagree though; I think music im Galaxy 2 is better and I love its atmosphere more than 1 for how happy and classicy it feels. I agree quite a bit that the story is... story. But in all honesty, Galaxy 2 does have the best level design across the mainline mario games. Especially with how well executed the end game is with its green stars.
      Inshort, I think 2 is the best game in the series (my fav game of all time) with how gameplay go so far where it kinda lacks with story and such.

    I agree with a lot of what you said but a couple of places where we deviate:
    1. Yes, Mario Galaxy 2 has less story and atmosphere but I don't find it disappointing. I think it's a great tradeoff. 1 has more emotion and complete story, 2 has more fun levels. The linear world map I'm ok with but I guess I like linear things more than most. I like seeing how close I am to the end of something as motivation to keep going. And it also seemed like they knew we had gone through the emotional wringer of the first one and made it clear they were not looking to do that again, just wanted us to enjoy the cool new levels, and I'm fine with that. Don't get me wrong, the emotion of the first game really moved me, but I didn't need it in the sequel, and I realize it's rare to put that in a Mario game, so I'm used to not judging Mario games based on that.
    2. I am not a fan of the final Bowser fight. I think in a final boss fight there are 2 major components: presentation and actual challenge. Often games will use a masterful presentation to hide the fact that the boss is easy as fuck. And I think that's what happened here. Yes, it did look really cool, don't get me wrong. But it was painfully easy. I felt no sense of challenge at all trying to kill Bowser, just the illusion of challenge. And yes, the battle style was creative, but it couldn't make up for the lack of challenge to me. Bowser was also kind of easy in the final boss fight in SMG1 but I felt like you were usually still going to die a few times first, especially if you took victory for granted. In this one, I'm not sure I ever die when facing Bowser, it feels like a joke, and I feel like it undermines the grand presentation of the fight. I was kind of hoping you would have at least mentioned in passing how easy the fight was.
    But I think your main points I totally agree with. It's not a bad sequel and it's a tremendous game. It could have done more story/atmosphere wise. I'm not sure it needed to to make me happy but yeah, it could have made it more special had they put in the extra effort to craft a more complete story. And maybe that is worth talking about. Maybe this game could have been one to bring us to tears too.

    This is like the Far cry 3 and Far Cry 4 comparison, which 3 focuses on story wise, like Mario Galaxy and 4 focuses in more gameplay aspects and mechanics, like Mario Galaxy 2.
    Overall I love both games, and as long I get to have fun, it's all it matters!

    You know… Galaxy 2 is a masterpiece just like Galaxy 1. But the reason I love Galaxy 1 more is because it has better and deep story (a beautiful story actually) and I also love the music more. Galaxy 2 is better gameplay wise but I wish it had a deeper story like the first one.

    I’ve never played part one and tried to on an emulator but the controls make it a bit hard to emulate and I don’t have my Wii remote anymore to connect so I still haven’t played Mario galaxy 1 but Part 2 was the game I fully completed with the exception of 1 star (my brother kept erasing my file though he was younger and didn’t know better) and man I replayed it over and over again. It was amazing to me plus the music was probably the best of any Mario series. I think I enjoyed this music over anything else

    I will love both games for different reasons, some shared, some not.
    The fabulous mystique of the original, or the incredibly fun galaxies of the second one.
    The sense of loneliness mixed in with beauty of the original, or the whimsical and wonderful environments of the second one.
    I am glad that Super Mario Galaxy 2 decided not to be 1 but again, exploring different concepts of the boundless posibilities of the cosmos was done in very beautiful ways in both games.

    I’ve seen lots of people bring up how Galaxy 2’s story isn’t as good as the original’s and I’d just like to say to everyone that it’s the same as the original’s so I have no clue what makes Galaxy 2’s story not as good.
    Also the only reason the Star Festival happened again is because of the Universe Reset essentially resetting the Universe thus technically 100 have passed since the first game because the Universe reset.
    Also also, I saw somewhere that apparently Lubba was supposed to have a backstory but it got cut I think?
    Also also also, currently the closest we have to a backstory for Lubba is the fact that him and Rosalina know each other

    Since the last thing that matters to me personally in a Mario game is the story, I’m on the side of Galaxy 2 being the better game.
    I love them both very much, but the 2nd was just bigger, and more of what I wanted. And minor things like not preferring the map didn’t change that at all.

    Funny enough I actually played super Mario Galaxy 2 first. I remember seeing a trailer for it were this guy was hyping up yoshi being in there because he wasn't in the first one! I did get super Mario all stars, so im going to have to play through the first one to see what its like. But I remember seeing some super Mario Galaxy 1 fans saying that it wasn't as good as the first one.

    Galaxy 2 to me was just as good as Galaxy 1. I remember being excited when someone told me there was gonna be a sequel and counting down the weeks until release once I found out the release date. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and it was the highlight of one of my middle school years
    My only complaint is like you said with the atmosphere and background. There seemed to be more levels with blue skies and clouds than starry sky levels which takes away the whole “galaxy/spacey” aesthetic. All in all though, it was a solid game that holds a special place in my heart ❤️

    4:30 personally I think the reason the opening was simplified was because Shigeru Miyamoto put his foot down on a simple story direction. I like him and all but he has a serious hate boner for story more complex than ‘save the princess’ in a Mario game. A lot of the story in galaxy 1 was actually snuck in behind his back.

    I am heavily biased. Galaxy was my first Mario game ever and I fell in love. Even after going back and playing through the first galaxy I just still love Galaxy 2 since it has so many memories engraved in the game for me. Hey, I enjoyed this video once I realized it was more of a review of the game, despite certain disagreements with how we view it, but I was sort of surprised of how little the idea of what makes a good sequel was discussed at all in the video. Maybe it’s reductive to summarize, but the conclusion I drew was that your answer was like “sure I guess it depends on your taste idk” rather than talking about the nature of video game sequels and why this game in particular is an interesting case study. It felt like the title is misleading or maybe the vision of this essay got lost somewhere. Sort of irritating, but I still appreciate the effort put in.

    As a kid I always thought you _couldn't_ collect the green stars unless you played as Luigi. I later realized, to my dismay, that this isn't the case (you can still get them as Mario), but I like to pretend that its true. Lets call it my own personal head canon.

  • @vslazer6728
    @vslazer6728 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Galaxy 2 is my favorite game of all time, but admittedly it's only a sequel in concept. I think they wanted to do a sequel but also needed to make it different, and so they traded in the atmosphere and story of the first game for far expanded upon everything else. The gameplay mechanics, level design, music and difficulty are all cranked up to 11 where all those things (except the music) were more so in the 8-9 range in Galaxy 1. I'd argue that there is still atmosphere, just a completely different one than what Galaxy 1 had. Where Galaxy 1's atmosphere was deep, quiet and peaceful in a way, Galaxy 2 has an energetic and exciting atmosphere that matches all the cool new stuff and ideas that are taking place and honestly this invokes a serious sense of joy and magic when playing the game. It really depends on what kind of person you are as to which you prefer but both are undeniably masterpiece 10/10 games and always will be.

    This might be a slightly unconventional opinion, but i actually think that SMG2s story mirrors SMG1s quite brilliantly. Sure, there's a few hiccups during the opening, but keeping a lot of it as subtext served the story quite well. Lubba getting to see Rosalina again was genuinely touching, even if Lubba as a character might have been a little unexplored.
    Also, one detail I remember quite fondly was how, whenever you are on a space near a worldportal on the map, the portal itself actually showed up on the faceship skybox.
    It's the little things like that that made young me absolutely fall in love with, not just SMG, but its sequel as well.
    (P.S. No matter how much I dislike the boobbot, it's still a better boss then megaleg, fight me I dare you)

    I like the power up designed levels in 2 along with the bossfights, which think are some of the best I've seen from mario, and I like playing as Luigi or Mario. Saving up starlets in the bank was fun when I was younger, I guess. But that's where it ends for me. Galaxy 2 has a really hard time recapturing my attention to keep playing it, meaning I've only had one playthrough of the game, being my first, and with galaxy 1 I have replayed the game, and the postgame with Luigi around 8 times now. The atmosphere is so different in the two games. Not to mention, while I find 2's gameplay more fun, I find 1's more memorable. Hey, at least both of them have killer music.

    The problem about Galaxy 2 for me is not only atmosphere and story, but also how little each Galaxy is explored. Each Galaxy only has 3 stars max, one of them being a comet. The progression we got in Honeyhive or Battlerock is just absent, and semi-open spaces open for exploration is also nonexistent other than Starshine Galaxy. Galaxy 2 might still have better levels individually, sure, but does it have a better collection of levels? Not necessarily so.

    • @callinater6133
      @callinater6133 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the other hand, galaxy 1 has a crap ton of 1 star galaxies. The galaxies with 6/7 stars only make up 15 of the galaxies. It’s give or take really.

    • @joshuachang5210
      @joshuachang5210 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@callinater6133 It's not give or take. Galaxy 1's approach makes more sense because some galaxies are better as 1-offs and some have more room for exploration. Galaxy 2 tries to fit every galaxy in the same mold, and in the end made some galaxies underutilized and some galaxies containing irrelevant missions (Melty Monster Galaxy being the most obvious example).

    Galaxy 1 still reigns supreme in terms of storytelling, soundtrack, atmosphere, etc. But where Galaxy 2 shines is in replayability. I don't think any of the levels in Galaxy 2 were unfair or annoying to complete (except some of the green stars and perfect run.) In addition, the timer that appears after every mission makes it fun to try for new best times, even on levels that aren't racing based. Finally, the green stars were a much better way to unlock the final level compared to replaying the entire game, cutscenes, textboxes, and all in the first game. some of Galaxy 2's levels do feel like they are obstacle courses floating in the sky though, and the frequent use of the "blue sky and clouds" skybox really sells that feeling. However, they are still much more fun to replay than some of the stars in the first game. I still like Galaxy 1 more though but would replay both any day.

    I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to Super Mario Galaxy what Tears of the Kingdom is to Breath of the Wild, a sequel that builds upon the original with more ideas, more content, and just overall a bigger game, but nowhere near as innovative or creative as the original (even though Super Mario Galaxy 2 has slightly better level design than Galaxy 1 imo).
    That being said, I like Super Mario Galaxy 2 more than 1 for Yoshi, the levels and the soundtrack, and I like Breath of the Wild more for it’s creative innovation, the 'fresh new world exploration' (Tears of the Kingdom did a good job at reusing the same world, but no matter how much they changed it doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been in this same world before, and the first time around exploring this world WAS a fresher and more intruiging experience than revisiting the same world with new clothes).

    • @avocadeous
      @avocadeous 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Difficulty isn’t the only problem imo. Bowser is easy in 1, but that feels like a better final boss because it feels like bowser is pulling all the stops. He utilises most of the skills that you have learnt in game in order to create a boss that feels like a test of your skills. Bowser will turn into one of those rock things that you see in the first level, he’ll turn into a spiky ball which you need to use the green plants to counter and he’ll spin attack you, which you can counter with your own spin. Galaxy 2 doesn’t have this. It’s simply the same fight as before, but with more lasers and fire, which we’ve already seen. The setting is also a big point. In galaxy 1, you’re in the center of the universe. You can see the massive reactor whilst you’re fighting. In galaxy 2, you’re in the same void you were in that last two times. The difficulty is the cherry on the cake here.
      There are other factors, like the buildup and payoff, but I’m only focusing on the fight itself here.
