  • Super Mario 64 is one of the most important games of all time because of how it impacted both the Mario franchise as a whole, but also just video games in general. So does it remake on the Nintendo DS hold up just as strong as it does? Is Super Mario 64 DS a bad remake? Well that's the question I try to answer in this Super Mario 64 DS retrospective. Enjoy!

@Hummus: What you said, it does not work, because their is also an invisible wall that only disapear when the chain chomp break the gate, or else an alternate version of the bob-omb clip would work on this version of the game. Unlesss i don't remember correctly, the beter way their is a mega mushroom near by, and that is the better way to do it, since the mega mushroom last a bit longer then the Luigi vanish ability, and if you are still yoshi just used a bomb to blow-up the red brick, does red brick will only appear in Bob-omb battle field starting from star 4 the second time the mario hat appear without unlocking mario, the other red brick behind the mountain that is always their, if it is before star 4, and you break it, it is just a 1-up musrhoom, but starting with star 4 it is a mega mushroom that will look like a Super mushroom, this is why people miss seeing the mega mushroom early on, they break the brick as mario on koopa the quick race for just a 1-up mushroom so they asssume it say like that in Star 4. In Whomp fortress, both red brick that have a mega mushroom will only have a mega mushroom starting on star 3. Later world the Mega mushroom is available from star 1, by but stomp the wood post. Wario jump really bad, but will only need one but stomp to free the chain chomp, the other character would need three but stomp to free the chain chomp, except if they used the mega mushroom, so that way not only invisibility, but only need to but stomp the post one time. Wario is the only one that can break black brick this is wrong. the other character can also break black brick but only with the Mega mushroom

You can rotate as much as you want, and if I click it I get the view from BEHIND the character. In the old game, this was difficult with the Lakitu cam, so I couldn't see where I was going. Now with the DS moving around is much more enjoyable thanks to the 360 cam

As someone who played Super Mario 64 to death on the Nintendo 64 as a kid, the DS remaster is an absolute joy. Nothing makes me happier than one of my favourite games getting more content, even if it was years later. The game has that Nintendo magic of just extreme high quality with tons of care and attention to make every feel so solid and fun, the game balance to refined they encourage so much messing around in them. The issue at this time in Nintendo's history was people expected a brand new Mario game to come at launch on new Nintendo systems and fans were already annoyed about Luigi's mansion on GameCube. I remember the gaming press especially fed into these.

Also on the bowser levels, if I remember correctly, they locked the camera to 8 directions so that one of the 8 d-pad input always lined up with the world as the world was also more linear. And I think that made the game much more manageable with the controls. Also mario insta-turning when completely stopped also helps with the control issue. Overall I think the controls are wayyy more manageable than people make them out to be.

As a DS launch game where the touch screen controls gave 360 control almost as good as a stick, especially with the stylus, most players had never used a touch screen before in 2004, this is way before smartphones. But by offering players the choice to use the inferior controls through the flat DS dpad meant most players were going to try it and not like those controls. It wasn't until 2006 with the Nintendo DS Lite that the console and touchscreens started to become much more accepted.

Love the visual improvements of this version - I know some people don't like how scratchy the textures can look because of the lack of filtering on the DS, but god, this just looks so much better in my opinion. It's shocking how much improvement Nintendo made in terms of art direction and modeling in less than a decade, on hardware that's weaker than the 64 in some ways, superior in a few others. The models are smoother (despite actually being lower poly than the 64 ones, since each model can be one mesh), the textures are more colorful and detailed, there's more texture variety overall, little details like grass overhanging the edges of cliffs make the whole game feel more cohesive, more models are used in place of billboarded sprites, it's all really amazing to see.

I was recently playing Super Mario 64 DS and I was reminded why I love playing 3D Maio games while playing that because even though I played SM64 several of times before, it's fresh each time because I can choose what stages I can play and many missions have several ways to beat them. For instance, in Tall, Tall Mountain, there's a star locked up behind grates that you get by finding a secret slide, but if you use Luigi's special flower ability, you can bypass that slide! In Big Boo's Haunt, the first mission locks you to the first floor, but with Mario's wall jump, you can get another star early if you want! In Hazy Maze Cave, right on the door to the left, there is a star high above that you are supposed to find while exploring the large labyrinth, however, you can actually get it right there by doing a precise triple jump on the black box with Luigi! in Bob-om Battlefield, collecting red coins is so much easier if you happen to have already unlocked the wing cap and the cannons! In Lethal Lava Land, there's a star that you are supposed to get by rolling over a log, but it's also behind a metal grate, so if you use Luigi's flower, you can skip the whole thing. You can even use the wing cap as a third method to conquer it! It just feels so awesome finding a new method to beat these classic stages. The game rewards you for knowing the game and its mechanics and world!

Um... literally all of these things can be done in the original....
The gate in TTM isn't there in the original, you can get there with a simple jump kick,
you can use a triple jump in BBH even in the original to skip star 1, in HMC you can get the star high up by simply using a sideflips with some wall kicks, the BOB thing you mentioned doesn't depend on the DS's additions, and you altready mentioned using the wing cap in LLL. So....huh?

    • @dimunnpabebet7040
      @dimunnpabebet7040 ปีที่แล้ว

Fr like with the HMC, the star near the elevator at the other side of the grid, I could take luigi's invisibility power from dory's lake, take the elevator back up in time to get the star. The stars in the rainbow level are so much easier with luigi's spin jump, like I could go at the top of the level or less high, and do the backflip spin and go for those stars instead of doing the parkour parts which are so annoying to do. The whomp level with the star in a cage is literally done in seconds with the owl in the tree and that's the only method I used to obtain that star and I never knew what that long wood plank was for!

The thing about the controls being wonky, is that the controls are pretty much THE foundation of a platformer - a genre all about learning to control the character you play as. It's certainly something you can get used to, but every time I try and go back to it, it feels like SUCH a fundamental flaw.
The realization that not even the 3DS's circle pad would fix the awkward movement was more than just a little frustrating.

    2. Can run carrying heavy objects (Including King Bob-Omb lol)
    3. Can butt-slam pillars down in one hit instead of 3 like Mario and Luigi
    4. Isn't pushed as far by enemies running into him like bullies in the lava level

Why would I move the camera if I wanted it to go back to its original angle? There are more problems with this game than just the controls. First off, the jump kick is pretty much useless in the DS remake because you lose all your momentum after you use it. While in the original you're able to go further backward with it. (it's also more useful in the original for climbing up walls when you're sliding to your death). They removed the ability to long jump into a wall and do a wall jump which removes a lot more movement options than you'd think. That's especially the case when you play rom hacks. One other thing I found stupid is that there are sometimes those red ? boxes that let out a bob-omb instead of a power flower just why? Also, because the wing, metal, and vanish caps are given to Mario, Luigi, and Wario respectively it makes the courses you'd have to go to activate them (except the wing cap course) feel very underwhelming since there's no switch for them basically removing the point of them. Also, with Yoshi why is his special ability literally just him shooting 3 streams of fire when he can literally do that same thing by just licking up a campfire three times? Sure it makes it more convenient but tell me when will you ever need to unfreeze something more than once in one mission? Also, remember the location for the "Watch for rolling rocks" star? Yeah, that place is practically pointless to have there since the star is no longer up there. Also, I don't know if it's just me but I feel that long jumps don't go as far as in the original. And don't even get me started on trying to rotate Bowser with the d-pad it's so bad that even Super Mario 63 does a better job at it. Whenever I play that game it feels like I'm being limited to my platform abilities (kinda like holding a Wii remote and nunchuck the wrong way playing Super Mario Galaxy). It's like I always have to stand still before performing something because I feel like I have more of a chance to fail it by going into things headfirst. Personally, I think this game somehow looks uglier than on the original. I think this is due to the game looking more like a polygon and pixelated game (like 2D and 3D) clashing at one another instead of full-on polygon. Here's another thing full-on multiplayer. They wanted multiplayer in the original and could have done it here but didn't (and no that multiplayer mode doesn't count). What a waste of an opportunity. Lastly, there's the reward for getting 100% in the game. In the original, you would unlock the cannon and meet Yoshi on the roof who would give you 100 1-ups, a message from the Super Mario 64 team, and a new triple jump. But in this game, there's nothing up there other than the 3-ups and the Wing Cap (which were also in the original). So basically you get nothing new for completing the game(In fact, you get even less than what you'd get in the original). What a disappointment for anyone who went through that entire experience only to realize that they just wasted their time.

So in a way, you could say the cover art reflects the original intentions.

Hot take: I think this is better than the N64 version. I never had too much issue with the DS controls, and even if you did, this is on the Wii U's Virtual Console, fixing the problem. This should have been included in 3D All-Stars instead of the original (or at the very least, alongside it).

8:55 the way Wario plays kind of feels like the devs completely forgot how he played prior to his creator passed away.
Coming from the perspective how someone that didn’t play the DS port, Wario was executed differently, he could have had his elbow charge attack that serves as a speed boost and an attack (basically Pizza Tower style but without initial running start needed), his ground pound could stun enemies nearby so they could be thrown at other enemies, and he could maybe have his downhill rolling mechanic if they figured out a way to make it work situationally.
His charge attack is also really similar to how most of the enemies and bosses behave in the game too so it’s super weird how they didn’t figure out how to make his move set work in a way that he could have literally did charge attack jousting with bosses.
This was even his move set in his first appearance on Gameboy too.

My opinion in short: Loved the new content. Kid me would have killed to play as Luigi, as well as Yoshi and Wario. More secret stars like the one behind the mirror makes for a beefier game. It just doesn't play nearly as well on the DS. From what I've heard, the N64 and its joystick were built to play Mario 64. Downgrading that to the 4 directional D-pad and having to hold a button to run didn't feel nearly as fun.

this is the best remake they could make with the console they had to work on
and tbh playing with the circle pad in 3ds is at least better than just using the dpad. only had issues trying to do the sideways jump and only when trying to play with dpad
also now we are more used to having a pad in a touchscreen thanks to mobile games so i hope this makes more players able to play this masterpiece

    It was my literal childhood.
I had so much fun with it even after beating it and collecting all 150, but sadly… my heart was broken forever thanks to my older brother. I let him play it one day and when he gave it back to me after a few hours my save of the 150 stars was gone.
I went to him panicking and saying what did you do???? He was like ohhh I thought it said easy. (Keep in mind he barely knew English at the time) so it wasn’t intentional or too much of his fault but still… hours and hours of grinding the game and it was all gone. I ran to my mom and was crying my ass off in my her arms.
I was so upset that I literally went to EB Games at the time the very next day and traded it in for a new game.
    Never looked back…. :(

As someone who never played the original, I've always liked this game a lot. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 90's on 16-bit consoles, but the D-pad only controls didn't bother me. The mere fact you could now play a game originally made for Nintendo 64, but with upgraded graphics and more content alone was absolutely mindblowing at the time. Also agree that the mini-games were an absolute blast. I actually did spend quite a lot of time playing those.

I actually played 64 DS before 64 (never owned a Nintendo 64 growing up) so I really didn't mind the controls since it was all I knew at the time. Also, though I did appreciate how there were more stars in 64 DS, weren't most of them just from collecting Silver Stars or pressing a Star Switch? It didn't really feel like much of an addition to me. Still, I have a lot of love for the remake! One of my favorite memories was going on to TH-cam back in 2006 and watching a video of someone showing how to get 99 lives with Mario and a giant mushroom in Hazy Maze Cave, as well as how to glitch yourself to the bottom of Wet Dry World when the water is at its highest. Good childhood memories!

The one thing that always annoys me when talking about this game's controls, is that nobody talks about the the little stylus clip that came with the OG Nintendo DS. It was on a string that you could attach to your DS. You then could put the small clip on your thumb and use the touch screen like an analog stick with your thumb. The game controlled beautifully with it!
For whatever reason no other game, at least to my knowledge, used this gimmick again and Nintendo didn't package the clip in subsequent DS revisions. Which is a shame tbh.

I tried playing it shortly after release and I just couldn't get past the controls. I really tried, but I just found it was incredibly frustrating trying to move around with the D-Pad, and using the stylus was even worse for me. I always meant to try it on the 3DS. I know you're still limited to 8 way control, but I imagine it's got to feel a little more natural moving between those 8 directions at least, especially moving diagonally.

I think if the game separated more of the new stuff into either a newgame plus type thing or maybe a separate mode (just being able to switch characters based on preference, etc.) it’d be really great.
As it stands, even as a kid nothing it added felt like it was integrated in a way that made sense. It felt more intrusive than well integrated in my opinion.
Starting as Yoshi was a legitimately insane move and even as a kid It felt completely tacked on, and this was before I even knew there was an original game to compare it to.

    • @thesensur6214

I love a lot of what it added, but trying to inject it into an already fully designed game was not the right decision in my opinion.
