To me Super Mario Sunshine will always be the best 3D Mario game to me, I love the perfected "summer holiday" vibe it has, it really feels best playing it on a hot summers' day. Another thing I liked was how all the main levels are all a part of Isle Delfino instead of being entirely different worlds. I always loved how you could see the other levels from each other, like how you could see Hotel Delfino from the theme park, or see Ricco Harbor from Bianco Hills. It made the game's world feel much more tightly connected. Mario isn't visiting different galaxies or other places in the Mushroom Kingdom, he's staying around Isle Delfino the entire time. Every level has a almost perfect vibe of what going on holiday is like, you have Hotel Delfino, everything feels calm, like it's time to turn in your hotel and relax as the warm day comes to it's end, vs the buzzing "life" of Pinna Park, where it feels more energetic, full of rides you'd expect to see families riding them etc. I don't think any other game perfected the summer holiday vibe as much as Super Mario Sunshine did, and I adore it for that alone.
@@jytvreal Galaxy's overrated as fuck lmao, How does it have replayability when all you do is go to a planet, spin enemies, then take a launch star to another planet and do that until you reach the objective star?
@@TheNathanNS Sunshine is Underhated as fuck because all you do in that game is urinate on enemies and do spaghetti coded levels and death barriers, galaxy is soaring through the stars and exploring cool ideas of gravity, sunshine is the same tropical setting while galaxy has diverse galaxies, one is a literal toybox, and also nintendo gave it a sequel, its rare mario games get sequels, Nintendo didn't make a super mario sunshine 2 for a reason
@@jytvreal Sunshine is still a pretty fun game at times, I've played Mario Galaxy way more than Sunshine, but both games are incredibly good. Sunshine is more of a Relaxing Vacation and Galaxy is more of an Epic Galactic Adventure, Sunshine is perfect for playing on a hot summer day while eating a popsicle, while Galaxy is more fun to play late at night, all lights off with your headphones on. Both games are equally good, even great, if someone doesn't like a game and likes another, it's their opinion, you have your own, you shouldn't call someone else's bad just because you think differently.
I played Mario Sunshine for the first time via 3D All Stars on Switch, and I loved my time with it. It's janky and weird, but it holds a special place in my heart (especially the voice acting; Bowser's voice is incredible). I found it to be way more enjoyable than 64 tbh
I've tried playing Super Mario 64. It's just not my thing. I don't enjoy the controls. Maybe it would have helped if I had grown up with it (since I grew up with Sunshine and Galaxy). Meanwhile, I have 100% beaten Sunshine more times than I've beaten almost any other video game; I just enjoy the experience so much, even if it's jank, glitchy, and weird with pretty subpar voice acting and some bizarre blue coin locations. The game really is magical, especially Noki Bay, Pianta Village, Sirena Beach, and all of Delfino Plaza, still Nintendo's best hub.
Mario Sunshine for me is a good game, but some people don't like it and i can see that. Like for example some blue coins are really hard to get or that pachinko level is really difficult and annoying.
I love the reactions some of the characters have if you spray them, especially the male piantas. I just love how they say Nooooo! If you spray them with water. It’s just so funny to me
The GCN was actually stronger than the PS2 in some ways but cuz of the small discs,it was held back from it's true potential damn (atleast that's what I heard lol)
Yessss another Mario video to draw too. :) Mario Sunshine always felt so “alive”, like an actual tropical resort. As much as I love Mario 64,, it felt lonely in the castlewalls. After all it was just you, some semi invisible toads, and a lakitu cameraman. But in Sunshine It REALLy felt bustling with people selling, roaming around and just chucking you into the abyss :].
I loved the worldbuilding that _Sunshine_ added to the Mushroom Kingdom, the 7 worlds ruled by Princess Peach. We've got several whole new native inhabitants and species, a whole new Island (Delfino) located off the Western coast of *World 3,* the tropical/oceanic climate world, as well as being an outlying part of the *Dinosaur Land/Yoshi's Island* archipelago. For me, it was akin to _Super Mario Land's_ *Sarasaland,* in which we got to see what's beyond the shifting sands of *World 2:* *Sarasaland,* Ruled by Princess Daisy. If you go far enough Southeast and follow the Oases, you'll eventually cross the border of the Mushroom Kingdom and arrive in *Birabuto Kingdom,* and from there can travel to the 4 different kingdoms of her realm; *Easton, Muda, and Chai.* so many items, natives, creatures/enemies, and unique places to explore.
Honestly the only thing that shows this game only took 18 months to create, and my only true gripe about it, is how short it is. There simply isn't enough of it and playing it when I was little, I always wanted more. Other than that? Controls, atmosphere, music, replay-ability; all flawless. This game was truly a masterpiece.
The Sand Bird isn’t fun, but it really isn’t that hard to get on its side when it turns. Sunshine’s slope physics can be oddly forgiving at times, you’ve undoubtedly seen it when standing on those moving cubes. Plus you have the hover nozzle. Just stand at the side before it starts turning and make your move at the right time.
Even the Hover Nozzle doesn't help because it lacks of recovery. I did that plenty of times and each time I slip off, I have to use the Hover Nozzle to reach back on the bird. But it wouldn't let me. The mission still sucks even with the Hover Nozzle.
Super Mario Sunshine is my absolute favorite Mario Franchise game. I was never much into the Mario games. My first one was one of the GBA games. It was okay, but didn't hook me. I remember I bought Sunshine at a pawn shop for like $10 or $15 and it got me hooked right away. I grew up on it and while some things were clunky I really enjoyed it. My brothers ex-girlfriend stole that copy several years ago, but just a couple months ago my friends bought me a new one while we were at a gaming convention I was guesting at. I broke down crying. Finally getting to play it again made me so happy! I will always cherish Sunshine and the memories it's given me ❤
I love how people say the game has no variety in it's level themes... ...but it's never been an issue how every single Mario game before Sunshine or since always relies on the same generic grass, water, desert, ice or lava themes we've seen a million times already
Yeah Also doesnt work too well when literally the game before sunshine 64 didnt really had that great theming ever besides of a few stages you see a little bit later in the game lol
I remember the first time I played this was in the play place at a McDonald’s. Such an odd place to play it, but I have such a great amount of nostalgia for the first level because of it.
Its my Favorite Mario game and ive played them all since super mario world on snes. Sunshine atmosphere, liberty of movement and level design are out of this world. I wish they'd make a Sunshine 2. This game is a masterpiece for me.
Crazy how the gap between Mario 64 and Sunshine was 6 years. The main reason why however was because Mario 64 2 was cancelled, Mario 128 took up some time (Though eventually became Galaxy), and Sunshine was rushed to boost GameCube sales. However it looks like the gap between Mario Odyssey and whatever the next game is will be even longer.
Maybe for the next open world Mario game. It can take place in a snowy land. Using bowser’s fury as a base for a true open world. The game can have a campion magic wand which can remove fire and create ice platforms. It can also duplicate object for platforming too. The levels can be snow ski resort or maybe a spa hotel. Levels are connected and you can fast travelling via a pipe network. The main collectable can be asteroids as we have sun, moon and stars before. There are Uccello which is the citizen of this land.
I was 5 years old in 2002, so this was probably the Mario game I played the most in my childhood. Like you said, a great thing Sunshine has is secrets, I think people usually underestimate it. For example, as a kid, I only ever found out Sirena Beach existed as a level after more than a year playing the game, I realized there was pineapple blocking a pipe on top of that buildind and I was like (hey, what happens if Yoshi eats it?). I was expecting a blue coin or a Shine at max, but my mind was blown away by the fact that there was an entire level hiding there, and I used to play this game a lot with my dad, my cousins and my friends, so I got super excited to show them that beautiful new level. I miss those kinds of secrets, Mario games nowadays still have them, but they dont have the balls to hide and entire level like that. Finding the level was as fun as playing it
You're 6 whole years older than me and you experienced the same game this fetus, (me), also played. It's funny how that works but I first played the game when it was already really old in 09.
I was born in 04 and played it a bunch growing up. I knew about Serena Beach from the Chuggaaconroy walkthtough but I was too scared of the manta ray to enter the level lol
@@austincarter9523 The manta ray made me feel even more intriguided by the level as a kid, because even back then I found Sunshine bosses to be quite easy. However, as soon as I entered Sirena Beach, I was greeted by a boss that I simply could not defeat as a kid. I had to ask my dad to beat it for me and even him struggled quite a lot
I think the movement in Sunshine was slippery compared to other games. I often times felt like the game completely screwed me over because it was super hard to make precise movements when on land
@@andres2625_I don’t know, I kinda feel the same way, the control can be funky at times. Still think it controls really well but it’s definitely has its moments, not as bad as 64 though.
The movement feels fantastic and is super sharp from my experience, but there is the janky camera and that issue where pressing A doesn’t always make him jump so he just walks right off a ledge lol
@@Sandia49 I feel like he feels super smooth the vast majority of the time, but the game does have its moments, though it’s probably more due to its camera then anything else.
@@evanrutledge-sz4yo Yeah the game controls extremely well in general, arguably better than most other Mario games, at least when it’s functioning as intended. It has a shitload of glitches though that tend to break the physics. In that way it’s worse than SM64. SM64 has alot of glitches, but they pretty much only happen when you know they exist and can execute them on purpose with some skill and effort. The glitches in Sunshine seem almost like little middle fingers sprinkled everywhere for you to find during normal gameplay.
Mario basically has a long jump and not the hover nozzle. Jump plus dive at the same time, and if you pair it with a side flip it becomes a very useful movement tech. Also sand bird is easy if you just land on the side of the bird's body not the ledges that are on its back.
You've been absolutely killing it with the content lately man, super great stuff. Sunshine may be a little unpolished, but there's just so much to love about it. I adore the tropical theming of all the locations, and there's just a certain magic to this game that shines through its flaws. Really great video!
If you had it when it came out, you enjoyed every minute of it. I played it relentlessly. In hindsight those who weren’t there may not have gotten that experience, but I played them all from the beginning. Sunshine was super awesome. You had to think when playing some of those bosses! It was pretty tough at that time.
The first time I played Sunshine was on 3D all stars. The slippery controls almost always cost me 😭 but at the same time I really did enjoy the game. I have a hate/love relationship for the game so that’s the best way to describe my relationship with Sunshine 😂 this may be shocking to most people but I do love it more than Galaxy. I just love the music and environments so much in Sunshine and I absolutely love the FLUDD and how Mario has his sleeves rolled up. Also YOSHI WAS IN IT!!! The hub is also my favorite hub in a Mario game. I just love isle delfino and the different environments you go to in the game. Like seriously there isn’t one place I don’t dislike going to and I also really like the residents that live there. Story is also my favorite out of any Mario game where you have to clear his name. Super Mario Sunshine will always remain one of my favorite Mario games
It plays much better on Gamecube. The analog triggers made using the water sprayer much easier. I played it on the Switch and was just like "No." Honestly all the games in that collection just don't feel right without the original controller intend for them.
I've always loved this game. The flaws weren't apparent to me at all as a kid, and as an adult, I can easily ignore them because the good far outweighs the bad in my opinion. Such a unique atmosphere for a Mario game and awesome levels.
I just finished the game today. This was the first time I’ve played it. Really enjoyed most of it. I can see why others didn’t like the secret levels because it can be frustrating at times but I didn’t think they were that bad. I’m talking about the required ones of course. The Delfino Plaza music is just straight up fire 🔥.
Sunshine is still my second favorite Mario game after TTYD. I absolutely loved the setting, the level design, and the completely unique water based combat. I will say that I've never gotten all of the blue coins, but I never felt the desire to hunt them down. Still waiting for Nintendo to bring us back to either Delphino or another tropical island
The only truly bad levels in my experience are the Lily Pad, the Pachinko machine, and the Chuckster stage. The blue coins are only bad if you go for all of them. There should be a tracking system for them, but its not game ruining imo. Spraying those panels in the Casino sucks as well. That was my only frustrating experience with Sunshine
Aside those levels u mentioned, there's also the Blooper Surfing, Sand Bird, mazy hotel in Sirena Beach and parts of Noki Bay that I absolutely despise.
I love mario sunshine because of the movement mechanics you can have a lot of fun just doing parkour in each level with how fluid the movement is, especially if you have a pro controller or emulate the game and use a PS4 controller I've done both
My only problem with sunshine is it’s limitations of the tropical island theme. Compared to 64 there was a lot less variety in level themes but outside of that it was very fun.
I've tired multiple times I just struggle to get very far into this game before just stopping playing for what ever reason. I hope to finish it someday.
4:03 - 4:21 Right in front of EVERYONE. Even the *police.* "Yo, there are two Mario's and one of them is painting the things and making a mess." The Piantas are... like... unbelievable. But I love this game, it's one of my favorite Mario games.
Mario Sunshine is an incredible game. It’s difficult, the controls are different than any other Mario game, but that makes it more fun sometimes. I would say that I wish there was more reward involved in completion but it’s still a fun time. Though watermelon festival gives me nightmares.
a lot of people know that you can kill all Kataquax on the beach using the dune stems. Yeet them into the air with the resulting sand castles and the splat on the ground. Then you've got a free "road" on your way to the contest judge's hut
Great video! This was my child hood Mario game so I'll always have nostalgia love for it. I did end up replaying it in 3D All Stars, and I'm now of the opinion it's a great game with a few weak/frustrating levels in it
I remember watching my cousin play super mario sunshine when it first came out and thinking the worlds look absolutely huge back then! The fact that you could see the other islands from a distance was always a really cool concept to me! I played the games many years later and while it was very frustrating at times, i did really enjoy it.
After seeing your videos on so many Mario reviews, it would be cool if you could go through the Paper Mario series, all the way from The Original to Origami King, kinda like what you did with the new super series, and then compile them all into one video. I would love to hear your opinions on them.
You should REALLY check out the Super Mario Sunburn mod for the game. It addresses a lot of the issues you have and it's by far the definitive way to play the game. It doesn't boot you out of levels when you collect a shine, it's semi-open world (you can actually just go to the places you see instead of having to portal to them), the blue coins don't interrupt you, and you only need 70 shines to beat the game; not beat every 7th stage.
I never get tired of these videos, I watched your NSMB series video and I really enjoyed it! I can’t wait to see more videos like this one! Keep going man! 🤩
Short answer: HECK NO! The game has it's problems yes, but for the most part it's very fun and is nowhere near as bad as a lot of people have an obsession with making it out to be
@@jaretco6423 I wouldn't even call it the bottom of the barrel or average. It's a pretty weird game I will admit, but I honestly think that's what makes it kind of unique compared to 64 and Galaxy
@@jaretco6423 I think it's done a pretty good job at it, it's not perfect but it's not something that makes me wanna throw my controller through the window (most of the time)
Still my favourite 3D Mario game personally. Nostalgia is definitely a factor as I mostly got into gaming around the GameCube era. I love how unapologetically weird it is. It’s peak nintendo experimentation for me that I would love to see more of.
The fact you have to do each of the 7 levels one at a time is so true, my games disc was scratched and I couldn’t play level 3 of gelato beach, it was the only world my game would crash on I could only play the first 2 levels, so I did the watermelon festival glitch in order to select episode 7
Short answer: Yes! Yes it is! Long answer: From my personal experience, only 40 % of SMS are actually fun, which, when talking about grades, would be a complete failure. Don't get me wrong, people can like shitty games - hell, I get some nostalgic enjoyment out of that pile of garbage that's DMC2 - but acting as if Sunshine was just a misunderstood masterpiece that could easily rival the likes of SM64 and SMG if only people werent so close-minded (like a lot of Sunshine fans claim) is just dishonest and 3D All Star proved that. Everyone liked SMG and from what I have seen online, younger gamers could get into SM64 with little to no problem and they actually liked it. It was, again, only Sunshine that people disliked. Unlike with SM64, it's not just the control that suck. SMS has problems up the a$$ and most boil down, not to just bad controls, but to bad ideas in general. And, no, I'm not even talking about infamously bad stages like the pachinko machine! Every stage in SMS has at least two bullshit missions that simply are no fun to play. And I know what I'm talking about! I 100 %ed that game for whatever reason. There are so many small errors with Sunshine. For example: running over the small crevice, where two floor tiles connect, can make mario do this weird stutter and drop jump imputs. Another thing that bothers me is the annoyingly long window is for sideflips and spin jumps. I often found myself running the widest angle possible, because, if I did a u-turn and then jump, Mario would do that stupid sideflip of his. And those are just minor issues that stuck with me from back when I played 3D All Stars. So, yeah, people can make nostalgic excuses all they want, but SMS, imho, will always be the worst 3D Mario game. Still a decent to fun game if you only do the good missions.
Loved watching this video. Sunshine came out while I was in college, and I loved playing this as a way to relax after classes. The tropical location made it feel more relaxed and it just had a fun vibe. It felt much more immersive as well since the levels were all connected and it felt very open world.
I tried Sunshine for the first time on the Super Mario 3D All Stars collection. I wanted to like it, but the unusual controls and the fact that you had to get specific Shines to beat the game instead of being able to pick and choose which ones you wanted to get like in Super Mario 64, the Galaxy games, and Odyssey, made it more stressful and frustrating for me than fun. I'm glad other people were able to enjoy it even though I couldn't.
Sunshine controls are best used for a GameCube controller since the GameCube controller has pressure based controls which tell how deep and sensitive a button or control stick is pressed. Do not use any other controller besides the GameCube controller with super Mario sunshine since other Nintendo controllers do not have pressure based controls that work only with super Mario sunshine's pressure based controls ,for the GameCube controller. none of the other Nintendo controllers have had pressure based controls only the GameCube controller has pressure based controls that only works with super Mario sunshine which super Mario sunshine needs to have access to or you will not be able to control Mario properly since the pressure controls for the GameCube controller allow you to adjust Mario's movement sensitivity wile moving him around based on how deep your inputs are.
@@jaretco6423 I do not really care to complete sunshine sometimes but i did beat the game with 49 Shines you just need to skip some missions you do not really need to complete every mission. There are progression event story piranha plant triggers you can clear very quickly that allow you to unlock all the levels first before the bowser.jr mech fight. there are specific shine counts that unlock certain plaza events "yes part of the story" then this allows you can skip every thing else you do not like. you do not need to clear every thing in super mario sunshine you just need to know clearing certain specific unlocked levels with a certain amount of shines gets a new plaza event. if you know super mario sunshines event shine count unlocks you skip every thing you hate and just cruise through every thing. then I just preceded to play sunshine causally after I discovered this .
@@jaretco6423 chasseing "Shadow Mario" is the easy thing its the repetition of it that's very bad. the power ups thing happens in every Mario game where they are only available in certain areas of the level. not every level in sunshine is toxically bad as you make it seem the only problem with sunshine i had was the sand bird level every thing from sirenna beach, Pnina park, bionco hills, ricco harbor, and Noki bay is not even trouble its just that Gelato beach has the worst 2 mission Hells of all time that's where the massive irritation comes from. the thing is super sunshine's NPC dialogue in every level and mission gives you hints on how to complete stuff people who play super Mario galaxy forget "Super Mario sunshine" is the only semi-open Mario game that has NPC's in every level give hints on how to complete every mission in the game. speaking on "Super Mario galaxy 1"remember the flying Mario power up that never gets used again not even in "Super Mario galaxy 2" had flying Mario. flying Mario is a verry bizarre power up that only gets used in the first "Mario Galaxy" Game. I started to enjoy "super Mario Galaxy 1" more than "Super Mario galaxy 2" due "Super Mario galaxy 1" not being over blown with the green stars I just prefer the green stars being optional in "Mario Galaxy 2" than mandatory. I just prefer collectables to be in small amounts like in Super Mario 64,Super Mario Sunshine and "Super Mario Galaxy 1" style. "Super Mario galaxy 2" is too big for my liking I started to hate the long play through with Luigi. One play through of Mario Galaxy 2 as Mario is enough. Super Mario sunshine just needs more mission variety I would love to see the other islands too bad we wont get to see them.
If you want a more open Super Mario Sunshine play the hack Super Mario Sunburn. It lets you enter levels from other levels most Shines are active at once and you do not get kicked out of areas for getting a Shine. If you use the 70 Shine version of the hack any 70 opens the final boss. I was playing Sunburn on console using a modded Wii. Working on that game as a lets play. That hack might be more in line with what you want. And as always do not pirate a GameCube ISO to play it. I ripped my own ISO.
@@jaretco6423 Yes or no. The hack has 2 versions. The first version makes every Shadow Mario trigger the final area opening but with how open the game is and how you can do many Shines out of order that route can be crazy fast. All the game cares about is beating every Shadow Mario. But the other version makes any 70 Shines open the final area. So you can play it more like Galaxy and 64 at that point. For my lets play that I was working on I used the 70 Shine version to show that off. They offer both patches in the download so you pick one and edit Sunshine into Sunburn. So it's your choice.
I grew up with this game and adore it to this day, so much so that I have two tattoos inspired by it. I was only 4 when it came out, and I'll be 26 this year! Last year, it became the first game I dedicated time to 100 % complete. I will always come back to it, despite all the rage some levels caused (and still cause) me all those years ago! The Manta Storm terrified me as a kid but now it's one of my favourites. The hours I spent running around the hotel making up scenarios too! I could go on forever 😂
@@melancholyentertainment No, it's not a skill issue if other people also complain about the controls. Just look at any clip of a streamer playing Sunshine, and it's usually of them dying in one of the challenge levels.
Some how I do still love this game, even though when playing it on the switch recently (after MANY years away from the game) it did find it a MASSIVE grind!!!
Its generally my least favorite of the 3d Marios but I still think it's a pretty great game. Theres a lot of stuff I hate in it but even more that I love. It's neat.
Pretty much all of the 3D Mario games hold a special place in my heart, Sunshine included, but I played it recently after buying that 3D All-Stars Package and omg I'd forgotten how REPETITIVE it is. I gotta commend Super Mario Galaxy for making purple coin missions wayyyyy more engaging and fun than the often tedious red coin missions in Sunshine that just seemed to ground the game to a halt
I love the positivity your videos bring given how much negativity there is online but I have to say the format of “Is X bad?” and the answer always being no is getting a little tiresome despite the content of the video remaining good. Could just be me but I thought I'd throw that out there
Two things that Super Mario Sunshine gets right over Odyssey is that the locations actually look like real places that people live and reside in. It makes the player more immersed and willing to explore the areas/ levels. It gives off a more sense of "realism" to the game. In my humble opinion, Mario Odyssey, though makes up for in the semi-open world playability, lacked these traits quite a lot. Another thing is the hidden coins and Shine Sprites are NOT obviously hidden with clues, but are hidden in a more "natural" way like the bells in Isle Delfino being covered in black goo and cleaning them gives you a Shine Sprite (for example). In Odyssey, Power Moons would literally be placed lazily, or randomly in certain areas, sometimes just out in the open for you to grab.
I love Sunshine so much, but it’s clear the game was finished enough with compromises to be considered complete. If you look back at all the beta footage of the game and look through the leftover files, there was so much more the game would’ve had that got left on the cutting room floor. And the fact it takes a lot of its physics from 64, that really hurt.
I tried playing Super Mario Sunshine when it was released for the switch and I did not enjoy it, it was so bad I stopped playing it due to how frustrated I was with the controllers, I also didn’t like the plot very much but I had just finished playing Super Mario Galaxy for the first time which blew me away, definitely number 2 behind Super Mario Odyssey as far as 3d Mario games go Anyway since people seem to love this game more than Super Mario 64 I have decided to give it another chance
It's one of my Favorite 3D Mario games and despite what the trolls said about it being rushed without any facts to back that up it's still a Classic Mario game to me.
all sunshine haters are my opps. "janky" this, "fludd" that, "blue coins" yadda yadda. Idc I've probably played this game more than any other 3d mario, it's just to much fun for me to not think about. Fludd is a really fun gimmick to play with. I will admit that blooper racing is infuriating though. And also... the sand bird ain't THAT bad
I remember my moms boss getting me and my brother a GameCube with sunshine for Christmas one year, it was the first time we had a console (my older bros nes and 64 were missing/broken) so this game held close to my heart, replaying on allstars on switch was such a great nostalgic momentc, in all its wierdness we have to stan this game
Bruh, going from Odyssey to Sunshine is like going from a Porsche 911 GT3 to a Reliant Robin, Mario’s movement is all janky af, also the way he reacts to the environment can be glitchy and unpredictable. Saying the two have similar movement is ridiculous
Super Mario sunshine in my opinion is a great game with some really rough parts. I got this game for christmas in 2002 and I always played it since. I don't think I 100%'d it at all until I was older and more competent at video games. Sunshine has some very high highs and some very obnoxious lows when the game just has those moments. People say the pachinko game is annoying but I honestly don't have problems with it, You should never use the rocket nozzle in that level, it's just asking for a bad time. Same with the lily pads in the poison river, I feel like just making small taps on the button to level yourself with the coins makes it way more manageable. No I don't understand why the pachinko game has the weird force that shoves you to the right. I honestly think the chuckster level the first time in is probably really the most difficult when it comes to depth and aiming your throws right so you don't fly off the ledges. I always struggle with the last chuckster even though I know where to line him up. Blue coins can be a bitch too if you aren't using a checklist. But besides these flaws the worlds are so alive with npcs and they are so colorful and beautiful that as a kid I always wished isle delfino was real. Fuck those boats though good lord. I could write more but I'd write a novel so in conclusion TL;DR Good game that has some obnoxious parts but other than that I love it
seeing you do side flips out of the middle lake in pianta village to get the firey goop out of the way makes me feel so seen, i thought nobody else did it like that
Mario 64 has a midair correction tool. It's the midair kick. It's not nearly as overpowered as the Fludd, but that's what makes Mario 64 satisfying to master. It asks precision out of you.
The kick is not super useful tho because it only works if mario moves slow enough or you just dive to death By far the worst midair correction tool in the series
@@doesthiswork28 Biggest difference is that Fludd in sunshine is a crutch for movement. People would have a significantly harder time getting through levels without it. In Mario 64 it's just one of many options. Just another small tool in his kit for certain situations.
@@tetermc i mean i agree with that fludd is an important part of sunshines movement and it wouldnt work without it but is that really that bad? Also the kick in 64 is like just because of how it works too situational imo Because in 99% you probably always will have too much speed to even trigger it in your jump
This game is my childhood and was incredibly difficult when i was a kid. I legitimately didnt beat this game until i replayed it when i was 13 almost 10 years after my initial time playing it
Super Mario Sunshine is just like Super Mario Bros 2. It's completely different and unique in it's own weird way but still an effort worth playing nonetheless. I just wish they could've fixed it up like how they did with the OG Super Mario All Stars
I really enjoyed this game as a kid in 2002. I played it a ton at a buds house and got to the part where you had to clean some deep sea monster's teeth, then he lost his memory card lol. I picked the game up a few years later (2007 I believe) and wanted to complete it on my Wii. The big stand out with my second run of this game were the clunky controls. I could barely control Mario. It seemed liked where I intended to jump never worked out, and simply getting him across a narrow platform was nearly impossible without him falling off. I played a variety of video games at the time and was relatively good at them and I wondered if it was just me? However, tons of forums and general peer responses of this game were against the controls and the glitchy levels. Some of those side shine quests were poorly designed, filled with glitches, and were borderline impossible to successfully complete due to the clunky controls. I put the game down again when I was halfway through the harbor level and haven't played it since. A few years ago I was excited to hear Nintendo was re-releasing Sunshine alongside SM64 and Galaxy. But because reviews stated they never polished the controls or corrected the glitches I felt there was little reason to give this game a third try. I consider it unplayable until its errors are corrected.
yeah ive had similar experiences to you even though the video talks about how crisp the movement is. i guess i feel something in between, because while i feel like the movement itself never fails me, the collisions of objects in the levels can be so bad at times. especially the bonus stages where shadow mario steals your fludd-- i've died so many times because mario kinda just glitches on a slope or corner and becomes uncontrollable. even if i'm moving as intended, a lot of the time the levels do not respond to mario how i want them to
Super Mario Sunshine wasn't very good, its island theme was extremely repetitive, and I couldn't stand the island residents, but I wouldn't exactly call the game "bad." I also wasn't a fan of the water gun, and ironically, the special stages are my favorite part of the game (no FLUDD, no island theme!). It's similar to the US version of Super Mario Bros. 2: I had *some* fun with it, it has its charm, but as a Mario game it is different in ways that I didn't like. Of course, SMB2 *wasn't* originally developed as a Mario game, but that's beside the point.
I would recommend viewing a walkthrough first of the whole game before playing. Been playing the last few days and it's been annoying to play. Reco Harbor is really in that area didn't like the climbing aspect to get the red nuzzle. I also didn't like doing the second Blubber surfing mission in the Harbor. Had to play though it at least five times due to the fact that I kept dying after collecting all of the 8 red coins. Crashing into things with the creature. Mario also has a tendency to slip everyware I noticed. Don't know if that was intentional or not kept losing at a lot of the secret stages because of this as well. Have wasted almost two hours in some stages due to not knowing what to do or getting the shine and not knowing how to get to it. Like I said view a walkthrough first you'll be glad you did. I messed up by not doing this.
Love the pitch for the open world Isle Delfino sequel. Big fan of the game as it is but an open world along with some polishing (and hopefully a long jump lol) would be an easy purchase for me. Thanks for the vid!
I'm making a Remastered version of Super Mario Sunshine, adding beta and unused aspects, ideas, stages, enemies, and more, enhancing the graphics and models entirely and even adding the other Islands that you see prior to the Isle Delfino commercial So i want to hear, what would you want to add or modify about the game in any aspect? I'll be more than happy to hear your suggestions By the way this is not Super Mario Eclipse, it's a whole other project
It's OK, I didn't grow up with it and only got it through 3D Allstars. When I go to the collection, I have a reason to go back to 64 and Galaxy, but I don't know with Sunshine. I find it to be a slightly confusing game but still well made.
I agree on the Lava Boat in Corona Mountain. As someone who didn't play Sunshine at all growing up and only played it later on, I haven't had a problem controlling it. Worst I can say is that the game doesn't really tell you how to control it properly, but the boat itself I think controls perfectly fine. It actually controls quite accurately to a real-life canoe: that was the first thing I noticed once I took a canoe down a river in real life, that real life canoe and the boat in Sunshine were almost identical in the physics of their controls. Once you figure out HOW to control the boat properly, that section in Corona Mountain is honestly pretty smooth sailing (pun intended), even when going for the blue coins as long as you're not impatient and take it slow.
i LOVED this game and think it's somewhat underrated, but I totally get why it doesn't rank very high on people's list of mario games - it came after super mario 64, which is one of the most influential games of all time - it takes some detours from the tried and true mario formula - it has a single location, versus its predecessor where we got so much variety - the graphics quality was a little rough around the edges (although I think the art direction was fantastic)
i played this game religiously after grade school every day. loved it. then my brother lost the memory card. it was truly crushing. it was 20 years ago now and it still pains me. hours, days, months worth of effort just gone. tragic.
Anyone with a PC, I recommend installing the Super mario sunburn mod, and the 4k mario sunshine texture pack. Both of these mods are on TH-cam and very easy to install. The sunburn mod lets you play sunshine without being booted out of a level after collecting a shinesprite. The 4k pack lets you play it with way better textures/graphics
Super Mario Sunshine has such thick atmosphere ... not just on a vocation level, even on a scary level. it really pushes some phobia like acrophobia, thalassophobia and megalophobia. My all time favorite in the Gamecube era
Interesting. I'm only at the point where you talk about how perfect the controls are. That is not my experience. I always felt like Mario's control was really bad. Like I would never get him to do the things I wanted. Whereas in 64 he basically always does.
The Game is good of course but when they were making it the devs played it very safe. In doing so they made the least interesting game in the 3D series by giving it the most normal to life setting. •Isle Delfino - Tropical Island •Delfino Plaza - the capital city •Ricco Harbor - harbor •Gelato Beach - the main beach •Pina Park - the park •Sirena Beach - another beach this time with a hotel The locations are very normal for the most part. In the other games you have your Ice World, Fire World, Primarily Underwater World, Sky World and so on to change it up.
Sunshine was my first video game i played. I love it and to this day is my favorite mario games and just overall one of my favorite video games. I was so happy that it was brought to switch in 3D all stars
Loved this game as a kid. As an adult I came back to and finally actually completed it. It was a lot of fun. There are some goofy parts for sure, but the good outweighs the bad. The music is incredible, the movement is awesome, and most levels are a good time.
I bought Super Mario 3D All-Stars when it came out really only for 64. I've never played Galaxy cause my copy was scratched from my sister when we were younger, so I never had the urge to test it out cause that meant setting my wii back up, and I never had a GameCube for sunshine, so I just wanted 64 cause I've played it many times. One day in December, I randomly had the urge to test out and played Sunshine, and let me tell you, I had an AMAZING time, and I can see some of the reasons why people don't like it as much, but it's really amazing even with the flaws.
What an L opinion, Sunshine gets boring fast but Galaxy has a ton of replayability

I didn't struggle that much with the sandbird, and that's coming from someone who game-overed several times on the secret stages in Bianco Hills.
Yeah
Also doesnt work too well when literally the game before sunshine
64 didnt really had that great theming ever besides of a few stages you see a little bit later in the game lol
Whoa. I wouldn't say the game is an masterpiece. It has alot of flaws you know.
You are on a roll with these Mario series videos I’ve binged like 5 of them last week while building some Lego Luigi figures 😂😂

@@andres2625_I don’t know, I kinda feel the same way, the control can be funky at times. Still think it controls really well but it’s definitely has its moments, not as bad as 64 though.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if someone in 2002 got nightmares from playing *the eel level* in Noki Bay.
It plays much better on Gamecube. The analog triggers made using the water sprayer much easier. I played it on the Switch and was just like "No." Honestly all the games in that collection just don't feel right without the original controller intend for them.

Hard disagree. Sunshine had villages, resorts, harbors, hotels, ancient ruins, an amusement park, and a freaking casino. It had plenty of variety

You should REALLY check out the Super Mario Sunburn mod for the game. It addresses a lot of the issues you have and it's by far the definitive way to play the game.
You are talking about jank
The same thing happens in 64 all the time when you walk on edges
U took the words right off my mouth.

@@jaretco6423 I was enjoying it during the lets play.
It's definitely not bad, it's just... different. And I love it for that 😊
I grew up with this game and adore it to this day, so much so that I have two tattoos inspired by it. I could go on forever 😂

don't trust aynone who hates Sunshine
That part! Anyone who hates this game is evil. Lol.
It's neat.
Agreed.
Could just be me but I thought I'd throw that out there
It's rage bait, everyone will flood the videos with "I love this game" comments because they feel the need to justify enjoying things
I tried playing Super Mario Sunshine when it was released for the switch and I did not enjoy it, it was so bad I stopped playing it due to how frustrated I was with the controllers, I also didn’t like the plot very much but I had just finished playing Super Mario Galaxy for the first time which blew me away, definitely number 2 behind Super Mario Odyssey as far as 3d Mario games go
Anyway since people seem to love this game more than Super Mario 64 I have decided to give it another chance
It’s the only mainline Mario that feels rushed
Alongside Super Mario World. There was going to be more worlds in that game but they were cut.
@@traviscunningham7062 I mean I’m more talking about games that feel rushed. Super Mario world still felt like a complete package.
It's one of my Favorite 3D Mario games and despite what the trolls said about it being rushed without any facts to back that up it's still a Classic Mario game to me.
Honestly, once you discover dive jump techniques in Sunshine, you can never enjoy stuff like longjumps the same. I really like using the dive jumps.
i love diving and think its way better than long jumps imo just because of how much fun it is to me
all sunshine haters are my opps.
"janky" this, "fludd" that, "blue coins" yadda yadda. Idc I've probably played this game more than any other 3d mario, it's just to much fun for me to not think about. Fludd is a really fun gimmick to play with. I will admit that blooper racing is infuriating though. And also... the sand bird ain't THAT bad
no it's not...didn't even watch the video ...
Fat dislike on this vid from me
There is a lot more to a game than just if it’s bad or good. The purpose of this video is to criticize its cons and praise it pros after all!
It's no push over with good difficulty.
It's not and AI didn't even watch the video. Game is just fine and a good addition to super Mario 3d
Even though I agree, you're missing the point by not watching.
Wet leaf is infinitely worse than sand bird
I could write more but I'd write a novel so in conclusion
TL;DR
Good game that has some obnoxious parts but other than that I love it
Pure nostalgia game. SMS feels so unfinished and it apparently was rushed to meet a deadline. That's basically speaks for itself.
You know what they say: You can’t rush art. This is why Galaxy is better.
seeing you do side flips out of the middle lake in pianta village to get the firey goop out of the way makes me feel so seen, i thought nobody else did it like that
Shit is mad satisfying
Mario 64 has a midair correction tool. It's the midair kick. It's not nearly as overpowered as the Fludd, but that's what makes Mario 64 satisfying to master. It asks precision out of you.
The kick is not super useful tho because it only works if mario moves slow enough or you just dive to death
By far the worst midair correction tool in the series
Mario 64 movement stays undefeated 💯
@@TheBBCSlurpee sorry but sunshines is sadly better
But 64's is still damn good
@@doesthiswork28 Biggest difference is that Fludd in sunshine is a crutch for movement. People would have a significantly harder time getting through levels without it. In Mario 64 it's just one of many options. Just another small tool in his kit for certain situations.
@@tetermc i mean i agree with that fludd is an important part of sunshines movement and it wouldnt work without it but is that really that bad?
Also the kick in 64 is like just because of how it works too situational imo
Because in 99% you probably always will have too much speed to even trigger it in your jump
This game is my childhood and was incredibly difficult when i was a kid. I legitimately didnt beat this game until i replayed it when i was 13 almost 10 years after my initial time playing it
Dude, Sunshine is easily one of the best Mario games period.
It's the worst Mario game by a Mile and yet it's still a master piece

@@jaretco6423 I'm not wrong or dreaming at all. Sunshine is simply one of the best 3d Mario games thus far.
I always used to use that side flip jump where you go like, left-right on the stick and then A
Super Mario Sunshine is just like Super Mario Bros 2.
I first played this game in 2009, wow you've been playing video games longer than some grown adults have been alive.
yeah ive had similar experiences to you even though the video talks about how crisp the movement is. i guess i feel something in between, because while i feel like the movement itself never fails me, the collisions of objects in the levels can be so bad at times. especially the bonus stages where shadow mario steals your fludd-- i've died so many times because mario kinda just glitches on a slope or corner and becomes uncontrollable. even if i'm moving as intended, a lot of the time the levels do not respond to mario how i want them to
Super Mario Sunshine wasn't very good, its island theme was extremely repetitive, and I couldn't stand the island residents, but I wouldn't exactly call the game "bad." I also wasn't a fan of the water gun, and ironically, the special stages are my favorite part of the game (no FLUDD, no island theme!).
Open world Mario sunshine exists, it's called Jak and Daxter
I'm making a Remastered version of Super Mario Sunshine, adding beta and unused aspects, ideas, stages, enemies, and more, enhancing the graphics and models entirely and even adding the other Islands that you see prior to the Isle Delfino commercial
So i want to hear, what would you want to add or modify about the game in any aspect?
I'll be more than happy to hear your suggestions
By the way this is not Super Mario Eclipse, it's a whole other project
I might make a video about this project sooner or later
Sunshine and the Mario 64 ds were my first 2 Mario games they might not be the best Mario games but are certainly my favorites
I was super young but I would never forget that secret soundtrack as the second Mario game introduced to me it's on my top 3
It's OK, I didn't grow up with it and only got it through 3D Allstars. When I go to the collection, I have a reason to go back to 64 and Galaxy, but I don't know with Sunshine. I find it to be a slightly confusing game but still well made.
I won't 100% this game but i didnt want to 100% galaxy 1 or 2 either.
Really makes you think how amazing the game would be if it wasn’t rushed

Sunshine is my all time favorite mario game. I hope some day they make a second because they could do so much with that game/series if they did it.
i LOVED this game and think it's somewhat underrated, but I totally get why it doesn't rank very high on people's list of mario games
- it came after super mario 64, which is one of the most influential games of all time
- it takes some detours from the tried and true mario formula
- it has a single location, versus its predecessor where we got so much variety
- the graphics quality was a little rough around the edges (although I think the art direction was fantastic)
I liked sunshine more than 64
i played this game religiously after grade school every day. loved it. then my brother lost the memory card. it was truly crushing. it was 20 years ago now and it still pains me. hours, days, months worth of effort just gone.
I have loved this game since I was a kid, while I think I’ve played galaxy more, I’ve always preferred sunshine absolutely adore this game
•Isle Delfino - Tropical Island
•Delfino Plaza - the capital city
•Ricco Harbor - harbor
•Gelato Beach - the main beach
•Pina Park - the park
•Sirena Beach - another beach this time with a hotel
The locations are very normal for the most part.
In the other games you have your Ice World, Fire World, Primarily Underwater World, Sky World and so on to change it up.
Keep up the bangers these are fun to watch especially as a Mario fanatic
