The Fallout universe has some of the deepest and most widely discussed lore of any video game franchise out there. Naturally, over the years, fans have pieced together some pretty interesting conspiracy theories surrounding some of the more mysterious elements of Fallout 4 in particular.
And this is where “iceberg theories” come into play. Lore icebergs explore the concept that fictional universes have many stories to tell beyond what we see in the main narrative. The main stories and content delivered in a direct fashion only scratch the surface, but much more can be discovered when we delve below the surface.
In this video, we’re going to explore 10 of the most mysterious and mindblowing Fallout 4 fan theories - covering a whole host of topics like the true identity of the Mysterious Stranger, the real culprits behind the great war, exposing a bunch of secret synths and much much more.

It was a boring mining simulator
Joseph Anderson put it best on the synth theory. It makes no sense for father, a person who clearly views synths as machines and basically showed no deviation from that view for the whole institute playthrough, to make you the head of the institute. Bethesda just threw in the dialogue with DIMA just for the "have I been a synth the whole time!?!?" drama, but never gave it actual thought on how it makes no sense plot wise.
Thank you. I've been waiting for someone to naysay this. It has always annoyed me that people have taken a screw up and Bethesda messing with you and completely created a new head cannon that they proceed to dump on everyone else even after Bethesda has said it isn't true.
I think it also adds to how manipulative DiMA is shown to be
Makes more sense that ptsd from the literal armagedon nate or nora experience left them stuck in that day as the beginning of their lives. Not to mention that nate shows hinta of remembering his military training
@@rossnorris2351 canon
@@AdminAbuse cannon? Please explain?
Any time you have to ask "Or is this just an oversight by Bethesda..." The answer is always YES!
The sole survivor does remember more about his life, in the silver shroud quest he says that he remember watching the show which his family
With
Yeah, and that isn't the only thing, either. TSS remembers military service / lawyer work, old commercials for power tools, the rules of baseball, various famous figures, etc.
I simply chalk this up to *gasp* poor writing/continuity. I know this may be hard to accept in this game, but there it is.
@@shughan666 I think the usual line people use to play devil's advocate on this is the wackos' comment about how synths supposedly remember things from the old world like pitcher being a position in baseball or whatever. Granted they're asking questions from the GOAT so they're obviously not the most reliable narrators.
It is just poor writing. As others have said, the sole survivor remembers a lot more than just the day the bombs fell. It is kind of BS that the only dialog option you are given is a memory of just that one day when Dima asks you what your first memory was and then implying that you might be a synth. Various situations and dialog options in this game are BS.
There is another random encounter with Lorenzo Cabot, where instead of leaning over the body of a ghoul, he is standing over the bodies of a few settlers, in which he freely admits to killing as part of his research.
Dogmeat goes to Kelloggs house because nick calls him with a dog whistle
when you’re speaking with the brotherhood doctor about your med exam you have an option that mentions your past(sitting too close to the tv) and in your “war never changes speech” you mention an elder relative. this proves that he/she does in fact remember his past🤭
The speech doesn’t count because it’s before synths were around and it was before they went into the vault
@@iloveowls90 its the fact that he remembers it, why that speech, how does it further the synths goals
@@iloveowls90Thats hardly the extent of the problems with this theory.
You take rads. Need food. Lose limbs. Have no synth components and do not have the proper reference ID for a synth
Dog meat was with Preston and mama Murphy. If you talk to mama Murphy she said he was sent out to find help.
Posting mostly for video interaction but I always like to remind people that you meet Dogmeat at the RED ROCKET and then I giggle because I'm immature.
I always thought the mother of the fog was just a person who was perpetrating that ruse, I thought the game all but confirmed it with that small residence you visit. Never thought other people didn’t think she was a person but possibly actually a spirit 😂
Yeah I'm going to chalk up the vats prior to obtaining the pipboy as Bethesda going "LOOK! VATS! AREN'T YOU NOSTALGIC! ARE YOU HAPPY? WE DID GOOD!"
My least favorite part of the Far Harbor DLC is that our character CLEARLY has pre-war memories in the rest of the game and can reference things only someone from pre-war America would know.
"That's not how you play baseball, dumbass"
Your character does have older memories. When talking to Daisy at Goodneighbor, she asks you what you remember, and you describe how pleasant the past was. You also talk to Kent about listening to The Silver Shroud on the radio. As for using VATS at the start, you cannot look at your inventory at the start either. Something that anyone should be able to do (in game) regardless of any pip-boy. So I think the tutorial level just took a few liberties.
Didn’t the sole survivor recall himself being in a war? Wasn’t that a first memory? Also a lot of the stuff can be chalked up to Bethesda not writing out lots of stuff
Legend has it that preston garvey will jump out if the tv screen scream "THERE'S a SETTlement thatcneeds your help letvme fkrcs jt kn your map!" And proceed to drag you into the game!
They should put Preston Garvey in Starfield. It would be really funny. There will be Preston Garvey clones on every planet that will seek out the player to give them BS settlement quests and there will no options in the dialog to say no. All options will be yes.
So many mysteries based on lazy writer Emil Pagliarulo, incompetency extraordinaire.
I think it's a bit funny that people think Bethesda, the company that keep recycling their old engine alongside animations and all would spend such an amount of efforts to mindblown people who wanna go deep into the lore, those conspiracies are funny i admit but i highly doubt they went that far, more likely they left huge gaps out of lazyness.
Yes they did,I mean that they messed up a lot, mostly because of the vats thing, what it thought was interesting thought that the doctor was the only person who had a pip boy why didn’t the overseer?
How can we really say 400 years is enough to solve an ancient alien technology that makes people psychic and immortality powers?
plus there was that whole nuclear war distraction.
At the start of Fallout 2 the protagonist doesn't start with a Pip-Boy right off the bat and is capable of using VATS.
Clearly, the Chosen One was also a synth.
Something that i noticed on a terminal in SRB. There is a Synth that they stopped looking for. I dont remember the Designation but the first two Characters are the same as Synth Shaun.
there's lore behind dog meat he's not a synth. he's from the BOS
I think Fallout 4 is a often underrated game
Dogmeat was bred by the Enclave, Vaut Tec dropped the bombs, and I still don’t know how Muldaver was able to stay youthful that long
Id like to point out that if you free Lorenzo he actually DOES go on a rampage. You can get some random encounters where you run into him standing over dead bodies and if you talk to him he admits he killed people just to study them
You went to some of the best. Oxhorn, Epic Nate. Hell yeah.
The sole Survivor synth theory would be really good if it was worked in properly. Leave the fate of the Commonwealth up too us. So no matter the choice, Father wins.
His final project before dying was too have his parent replaced with a synth and watch how they transform the Commonwealth
One thing that occurred to me about the Cabot family situation is that if you free Lorenzo, he will kill his family that kept him locked up for so long. If you kill Lorenzo, his family will rapidly age and die due to the lack of serum to kept them immortal. Either way, Lorenzo's family dies. Add that to the fact that after he kills his family, he is a rather chill dude. The first instinct is to help Jack kill his father before he escapes and becomes another monster in the commonwealth. It seems like the right thing to do but maybe it is not. In the short term, Lorenzo appears to not be the monster Jack said he is. In the long term, he might start acting like the monster that Jack described but of course the game does not explore this. In a hundred years he might become some kind of warlord with a large army that takes over the whole place. The difference for the player's choice besides which family members are still around after the quest is the quest reward.
Id like to point out that if you free Lorenzo he actually DOES go on a rampage. You can get some random encounters where you run into him standing over dead bodies and if you talk to him he admits he killed people just to study them.
Here is one explanation for The Sole Survivor (Specifically Nate not Nora) being able to use VATS without a Pip-Boy: He’s an augmented human. Nate being a U.S Army Vet with extensive Combat Experience and the existence to Augmentations in Fallout leads me to believe he may have been an Augmented Soldier. I don’t know for 100% sure if the U.S Military was using Augmented Soldiers leading up to The Great War, but I don’t see it as being even remotely impossible.
Again though, this is just my headcanon and theory based on lore we already have.
What if the mysterious stranger is a newer version of the nick valentine synth, sent my the institute to be the players guardian angel to make sure he has some help making it thru the wasteland?
Mama Murphy sees everything in jet and psycho lol
Na with Bethesdas writing the character would have named Synthia or the soul Synthvivor. Also the Vats is granted by the god like baton so bow down to the baton.
I think it's boring when being a synth or not is so ambiguous
there's 0 chance you are a synth, it makes no sense for father, a person who clearly views synths as machines to the very end, to make you the head of the institute.
@@qwerty-tl8iu I mean for other characters as well. It's like there's no upside or downside to being a synth and almost impossible to tell. There's no difference either way abd that's boring
Still waiting for that good story iceberg to this day.
I always side with Lorenzo. The Mysterious Serum is too good to pass up
Why does everyone forget that the Lone Wanderer can use V.A.T.S. without the pip boy during Tranquility Lane?
Because it's a simulation and doesn't prove anything one way or the other
I feel like the lone survivor is not a synth because the children of atoms “vision” that wouldn’t happen for a synth
Dude says “Blackwall” twice like the name “Blackhall” isn’t right there on the screen.
The bomb in Megaton had a vault tek logo on it. If they didn't start the war, they 100% made the bombs.
16:02 Brahmin too. Possibly other creatures as well. Kill a few Brahmin and you're bound to find a Synth component on some.
To me the mysterious stranger looks awfully like the sale's man you meet at the beginning of the game but that might just be me
Dogmeat is not the only pure bred dog there is one in the BADTFL regional office
“Iceberg right ahead!”
“Come on why aren’t we turning!!!!?!?!!??”
Lol
My brother actually killed a crow and it bled, so the thoery technically cannot be correct, i tried to get nicks clothes by giving him new clothes but it wouldn't let me
Why would they let a synth run the institute?
You take rads, need food (and can die without it in survival) lose limbs (with blood and all) and you lack synth components as well as code that refers to the fact that youre a synth
That is evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that you're not a synth.
HOWEVER, there is plenty here to justify a head canon. But we can say with confidence that bethesda didnt intend for the Sole Survivor to be a synth. Rather, the intention was to confuse the Sole Survivor after enough time (and radiation poisoning) has passed in their in-game life
I have a theory regarding the mysterious stranger, hear me out, its small cabal of time traveler, they Aid the protagonists for unknown modivations
With the synth shit it’s just that shit, that are several times when Nate or nora recounts things from before the war
Thank you for this video about an old but fun and buggy game
Plus first time survival play through
In fo 3 and NV the player can use vats without a pipboy.
Boom destroyed that argument.
Kellogg called the SS a "backup"
Shaun is a psychopath if you really think about it.
They explained why the synth attacked the SS before they became allies during the game.
There is a reason the SS had no memory of anything before the bombs dropped.
It would make it hard to Roleplay the SS.
We still waiting for the best play through ever 👁️👁️ where is it?
If there's ever a fallout 5 there should be a like 1/10 chance the stranger shows up as Synth Nick Valentine, as a hint he found the stranger and joined he/her/them
seems a lot, if not all, theories are from people not actually playing the game fully because if they were and if they read everything and talked to everyone all of these theories would've be answered by the game itself. and they are answered, like Dogmeat. if the people suggesting it bothered talking to Mama Murphy they would've known that Dogmeat was with them and was sent to find help, which he did find with the player shortly after leaving Concord. as for him not being mutated there's plenty of humans who aren't mutated, who eat and drink healthy meals which they shared with Dogmeat. he never needed to eat and drink mutated animals like the rest of the animal kingdom. only reason Brahmin are mutated is because you can't really package and can wheat and grass, which is lacking in the Fallout universe, so they had to eat what was available, which was mutated.
Mama Murphy's an NPC that gives clues to us the player if we get lost in what we're supposed to do. Jared wanting her is like Marty wanting the Almanac to "predict" the future and be rich.
we as a player have memories beyond ones made since the start of the game. people would know this if they actually played some of the side missions and not skipped all the dialogue.
Father letting us out is simply scientific curiosity, which he admits to us, which only proves why the Institute needs to be destroyed, because for all their might and advancement they're so devoid of human emotion and sympathy they're less human than the synths they created.
PAM is a walking calculator. she predicts but can't act on anything. it's not that easy throwing nuclear bombs, not like there's just one door and one switch to destroy the world. she wouldn't have access of any type to actually do anything about it, as if she even wanted to or was allowed to do.
Lozenzo isn't insane because that's not Lozenzo. his personality has been completely taken over by the artifact. and if you free him you can find him standing over corpses of settlers without remorse or guilt.
mannequins alive? i'm not even gonna respond to that stupidity.
theories need to have an ounce of believability in them to be, well, believed, but all of these are so monumentally stupid i'm surprised anyone made a video about them in the first place.
No one cares about your opinion
Soul survivor baby new a synth because he takes radiation.
Wait. So Fallout and Blade Runner are the same universe somehow? Synths thinking they are human. They were More Human Than Human.
Yes.
I think Mama Murphy is a Child of the Cathedral, made immortal by FEV exposure. Her sight came from the Master, and her wacky adventures are from her travels from California to Boston.
If you ever want fallout type music under your videos then please let me know! I make Fallout Original inspired Music! I believe its really good :) Love from The Netherlands!
8:00 In my head canon the SS is a Gen 4 synth, without failsafes and with enhanced reactions. That explains how we can body a courser when they can body humans.
10:30 i think Father is Shaun, and he wanted to test 2 things; the drive and personality of his father, and the combat capabilities of the experemental synth that's the SS. Thats why Father allowed coursers and synths to attack the SS. A field test.
That’s an interesting headcanon, and the timeline does work out that the Institute could have easily developed a Gen 4 synth in the intervening 50-60 years since Gen 3’s were first developed. It’s honestly weird that the Institute hasn’t made an upgrade to the Gen 3, and even weirder that they still use Gen 1’s and 2’s, which are over 100 years old by the events of the game.
@brokenursa9986 my biggest question, and I think it's just bad writing, but what's the Institute's long term goal? To replace everyone with synths? Why make synth gorillas? Investing in synth technology doesn't seem very smart in a post apocalyptic world.
No if if the sole survivor was a freaking synth FATHER WOULD NEVER PUT A SYNTH IN CHARGE
@theepicnate315 is the lore goat❤❤❤
one of the best games
10:52 gen4
another poorly written banger from Emil Pagliarulo lol
But we already know who launched the nukes
It was confirmed to be vault tech in the fallout show
Not really
I have killed dogmeat and it is not shynt with the SS1 executor perk it allows you to kill any essential npc or not, of the Concord npc the only shynt is Sturges.
Glory from the railroad tells you that she is shynt from gen2 but if you kill her she doesn't have any shynt component
You are spelling that word wrong, and I disagree because I’ve played the railroad quest line before and glory does drop a synth component when the BOS kills her, also it’s just a glitch in the game in general
Bringing up black face is risky to begin with, let alone just saying it as a joke. Poor taste :/
