Incredibly beautiful side of Slipknot on PT. 2. Then right after that you have The Nameless, which is like Vermillion parts 1&2 mashed together with a Mr. Bungle circus bridge part. This is such a good Slipknot album.

Vermillion is definitely the song that showcased their arranging skills the most. If the instruments were switched over to an orchestra, it would still work perfectly (especially at the end of the song). The tremolo behind the chorus sounds like something a violin would lay out

Joey and Paul really stand out this song, and i remember it was one of the first slipknot songs I heard with Corey putting more focus on melodic cleans. Then of course, Pt.2 hit me.
and yes, the toybox part (something i never noticed until now!) is layered beneath the band to some extent in little 3-note phrases at the end of each bar around 13:30!

If anyone ever says Metal is just noise, I always recommend they listen to Slipknot or Mudvayne. Musicianship is off the charts. Late great Joey Jordison on drums for slipknot and Ryan Martini bass lines for Mudvayne are ridiculously amazing 🤙

    • @MFKitten

One of my all time favorite Slipknot tracks... A song that was part of controversy when it came out (though not as much so as it's sequal).
This is in my opinion Corey Taylor's most underrated vocal performances; A simple but incredibly memorable repeated hook... And that projected and faded scream towards the end is honestly one of my favorites if their entire discography... As someone who's karaoke'd this a few times, it'll nearly knock you out to belt it out.
I have long thought that Volume 3 is their most finely produced albums. The songs blend, morph, and bleed into one another. Every track is placed metuliculously for effect and the album is a vast journey from beginning to end.

  • @kevinschotte2106

This track is a perfect combination of breathing in and breathing out! The whole build-up of the song, the threatening percussion and the way Taylor uses his whispering-Patton-vocals before he starts singing "cleaner" notes is dark and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
After that the light shines through and you can sit back and relax (and bang your head a little).
I dig the production of this track (and record as a whole), it is dry and gritty.
Geebz, you should check out Vermillion Pt. 2, which is on the same album, nice transition.
Keep it up man! Keep it up!

This is my favourite Slipknot album, and it made me sad hearing the band dislikes it so much. Yes, it was more accessible compared to their earlier stuff, but the combination of hard rock songs, the electronic alternative tinge and the few songs that are slower, and more emotionally revealing make this LP a truly interesting listen.

Vermillion is what they used to call a type of red color and pigment, or paint. I guess all these city's are close to body's of water that are also called Vermillion. They were able to find this pigment vermillion in some of these lakes and rivers, and some just had red mud. I'm guessing Cory is identifying with the color, but who knows.

On the guitar tone, I believe Mick and Jim used EMG pickups(correct me if i am wrong) these pickups are active. They are powered by a battery and have a pre amp with them. They are very tight sounding with crunchy uppers but can sound sterile to some. I personally think in this type of music they tame the guitars sound making it more focused.

The differing tonality of the guitars is just another layer of a multitude of things that make their music so complex and sonically beautiful. Jim favors fender, his tones are much sweeter and warmer, while Mick uses Ibanez and usually has a harsher more brutal tone. You can always identify who is playing just based on their individual sounds. The solo in this song is performed by Mick. Wild, chaotic and screaming with very fast picking and bending notes. Jim’s solos usually contain more sweeping arpeggios and going up and down scales.

Thank you very much ! You reacted to the "complete" version of the song ( there`s a radio version) which is much better.
The whole album is a masterpiece in my opinion and made so that one song ends with the next songs beginning. If not for reaction , just listen to it front to back.
PS. Every time Vermilion finishes I can not not hear "This is the year that hope fails you...." 😁

This was the last Slipknot album I was into, and this song is a real feather in their cap. Though their new song Chappeltown Rag is the coolest song I've heard from them in years, reignited my interest in them a little.

They'll never have another Subliminal Verses but that's okay. They're still making good music. It's just hard to be as into it after their initial 3 album run because of how high they set the bar

I remember when this came out. High expectations cos of how good Iowa was. And they didn't disappoint at all. Corey's extra high pitched screams were a surprise tho lol. He went back to a lower pitch screams in later albums.

Like how someone finally recognizes that the chug isn't all about "more gain."
    More gain = less attack.
    More gain = more mush.
More gain = less clarrity when picking fast.
This is definitely a case where more = less. Find that balance between how hard you can consistently hit and how much "grrrrrr" you need from the sound.
Don't be a puss, pull back the gain and hit the strings like they stole something from you. There's a reason that Hefield grips his pick with 3 fingers, because he can't get that percussive attack and still hold the pick with two. The pickj just rotates and becomes useless.
