Slipknot without masks?! Vocal ANALYSIS of "Before I Forget" and their first song to win a grammy!

  • My first introduction to Corey Taylor was with his acoustic cover of "Snuff", and I absolutely loved his voice. Since then, I've heard two Slipknot songs and some of his solo songs, and I find his voice just so intriguing. But from what I hear, this song put Slipknot on the grammy map, and that has piqued my interest so much, I just had to see why!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Slipknot performing "Before I Forget" for the first time.

Some other good songs featuring his vocals are Through Glass, Mission Statement, and Say You'll Haunt Me by Stone Sour, and The Devil In I, Dead Memories, and Sulfur by Slipknot.

I just want to say, Elizabeth, your channel has truly reignited the fire inside to pursue my music again. I’ve been feeling so defeated and depressed for the last couple years over the lack of response from the original work I’ve speant YEARS of my life trying to achieve. I was writing and producing EVERYTHING on my own spending countless nights after my 9-5 just tirelessly trying my hardest to put my heart on paper and then producing that fire. But became overwhelmed with all the work that I started losing my love for music. A terrifying reality because music has been pretty much my entire life. Watching your videos has really inspired me to try again and try harder. Because you’ve reminded me of all the things I’ve been trained as far as vocals go. I’ve been learning NEW things from you to improve even and now I KNOW I can accomplish my dream. I’m getting back to work for what will be my 3rd independent album and it’s going to be my best work BY FAR I can promise you that. Thank you Elizabeth you’re so so amazing! If there’s ANYWAY I can share it with you when that day comes I’d be happy to, I’m not asking for anything or anything like that I just want to share my story with you since you’ve been sharing yours with us! As a young teen Joey's drumming on Iowa, and specifically on the song People = Shit, was the first time I'd heard a blast beat and it blew my mind. My father always had stuff like Led Zeppelin or Rush playing in his truck, so I grew up hearing talented drumming in music, but to me the speed and precision paired with just a little bit of what I call "good sloppy" (my music teacher buddy calls it "feel"), really blew my mind and I've been a fan ever since. I know for a lot of metalheads around my age, Slipknot is a really important band in terms of them being the gateway band into extreme metal and harsh vocals in general. Corey Taylor also generally speaks positively of other musicians, with a notable exception being people that speak negatively of rock and metal music/musicians. There's a video clip I remember seeing of him fangirling in front of Ronnie James Dio, and Dio saying that the amount of praise Corey was giving him, he had for Corey as well. I figure if someone has the respect of somebody as important and talented as Dio, he's a damn good vocalist by any measurement.

The only downside with the music video version is it cuts the "middle/bridge" section short a little, not to a huge detriment but the album version builds up a bit longer before the vocals kick back in & has an extended lead guitar melody line that is surprisingly quite uplifting.

Volume 3 is such a fascinating turn in Slipknot's discography. Corey made the conscious decision to write all the lyrics cleanly, so there's some wild wordplay. Moreover, Corey totally reworked his screams between Iowa and All Hope Is Gone, and Vol 3 is a stage hes never returned to. The screams sound way higher throughout the album compared to his gutturals, seemingly using more high tones (still true fold too) and lending all of his screams an escalating energy. So yes, that is a signature style on this album especially!

But it does give some incentive for people to find the full song when they find out they missed some of it. Not sure if it’s a marketing thing or to save money on the videos by cutting out some of the parts without singing. Probably something to do with viewership metrics. Over a certain amount of time without singing there could be a drop off in viewership for videos due to people having the attention span of a squirrel. That’s just a guesstimation.

Like don't act like a shithead and then accuse the world and society of being shit. The world and society are made of people each choosing to be selfish shits instead of being a betterment of society. Naturally with that kind of hype this video didnt hit with a small percentage of fans because they felt they had been lied too. but most of us fucking LOVED how creative it was, to drive up hype, then bring such an interesting take where you are either getting partial shots or blurred focus of them members. It is imo one of the things that now is so hard to understand about why they were successful. its a lot of little details that created buzz, created intrigue that helped launch them into the stratosphere in terms of metal bands.

Rick Rubin barely produced this record. Corey has been very vocal about how he feels about Rubins input, or lack thereof, on Vol. 3. He has gone so far as to say that he'll never work with Rubin again. Greg Fidelman, who engineered this album, was far more instrumental, and went on to produce The Gray Chapter and We Are Not Your Kind for Slipknot.

    • @wolfgangengel4835
      @wolfgangengel4835 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Yeah, that's pretty much the same what everyone said who worked with Rubin. He is not the most influential producer in the business. He just let the artist make his thing, and if the artist troubles to find his thing, Rubin helps to find it. It's almost like his work is more psychological, and coaching work, than that of a classic producer. And some love that, some hate that. I think System of a down got along with him very well. When Serj troubled to write a certain line for Chop Suey, Rubin told him to take a bible, open random page, and blindly put his finger on some words. That pretty much sums up Rubins style of work. 😆 I personally think Rubin is overrated. It's just that he worked with some of the most incredible artists in the music business. I think they helped him more, than he helped them. But he's a very likeable dude, and became an icon and a symbol. Artists want his name in their album credits.

The studio version has a few parts that are more extended than the video version, and I think those extra pieces really make the song feel more complete. I do recommend experiencing album versions for all of Slipknot's tracks, since many of their videos do cut pieces out.

I really like your in depth look at this song. This band had more deptg than a lot of people know. Good job!

Easy one of the most underrated metal songs of all time. Brilliant begin to end. This song has been broken down part by part where you can see why it is one of the best ever recorded.

I really wish Elizabeth would make a video Rival Sons one day. Im absolutely dead certain she would love it. Keep On Swinging live Gibson Session or maybe Shooting Stars would be such a banger with so much juicy moments to break down, both from the singing and the instrumentals. One day hopefully!🙏

Slipknot’s music has helped me get through high school. They’ve been my all time favorite band for years.
Seeing this vid pop I had to click on it and see your review of it.

I love how intense his eyes get when it shows the close up and transitions from easier to the scream. That's THE BEST.

For a really intense and dark (but unhealthy) vocal performance from Corey, you should definitely check some songs from the 2002 Disasterpieces live show, the whole band was in a pretty dark place at that time and you can hear all that in Corey's voice at this time, sadness, anger, depression, the vocals are insanely out there, but I believe that Corey said he was damaging his voice at this time because he wasn't using proper technics. Definitely check Purity, Disasterpiece, Gently, or any song from that live really... But especially Gently, this live version had one of the darkest vocals Corey ever did, at least that's what a loooot of Slipknot fans says about that performance
