    "The Noose" and "Weak and Powerless" on the same album might be my favorite tracks from that record. And this album is probably my favorite from APC. So good.

    • @poker_dealer

      I’d go:
      1. Weak and Powerless
      2. Pet
      3. Blue
      4. The Outsider
      5. Gravity

    I’ve always wondered how hard it was for Billy Howerdel to not sound like Tool since he used to be Adams guitar tech up until their first show on the Ænima tour. I’d say he’s done a pretty good job.

    • @manicentity

    • @evan6534
      @evan6534 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Billy was also a stage/guitar tech for a bunch of other bands too (including Guns and Roses if I recall) but yeah his guitar style and sound is his own for sure. Mer de Noms was basically only written by Billy (unlike the other APC albums) - and his "influences" for that album are mostly New Wave bands as odd as that may seem at first...

    One of my favourite songs of all time off one of my favourite albums of all time. Josh Freese's playing on this record was instrumental in me becoming a drummer myself and he also played a big part in me playing Paiste cymbals. Everything here just sounds absolutely phenomenal and it's got just the right amount of compression to make it sound fat and punchy without completely squashing the dynamics.

      @kmulcahyable 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's about recovery from addiction and the 12 steps too. Name is right in the title. The 13th Step is usually known as the act of someone who had been clean longer, persuading and becoming physical with a newcomer, with negative motives.

    • @kmulcahyable
      @kmulcahyable 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      "The Package" lyrics are straight up about my last comment. They're written from the perspective of someone with clean time going to a meeting etc. and using cliches to pull a newcomer in until they're done with that person. Great song.

    Thanks Geebz for reviewing this. If you didn't mention about the time signature, I'd never realise there was a 4/4 in the first verse. I always thought it was just 3/4 and 6/8 all the way.

    The production of ‘Thirteenth Step’ is possibly one of the most magnificent executions of sonics of any hard rock or metal album ever and the songwriting, instrumentation and arrangements are just transcendental. It’s so good on multiple levels. The first three tracks are pure ear candy.

    Still here of course, love your vids, I think something like fiddle and the drum (a perfect circle) will blow you away, it's just Maynard harmonising with himself by dubbing his voice, it's huge!

    Well, for the "last 30 days" programming, I'll just repeat my recommendation from a week ago: "The Noose" and "Weak and Powerless" on the same album might be my favorite tracks from this record. 😁

    Such a great breakdown from one of my favorite bands! I really hope you'll be able to check out "The Noose" as well, the song has such a powerful message, but I really think you'd like the production/engineering of it.

    It's rumored the lyrics of this song were inspired by a conversation Maynard had with Layne Staley's brother after Layne's death from od.

    My dad has worked most of his life with sound and audio. Either as self employed sound technician for live performances or as a technical director at a TV station. When I played this album for him he was awestruck at the mix and how perfect it is. I remember him saying "If I ever manage to get a kickdrum to sound like that, I'll die happy". He's retired today, and even though he didn't achieve that kickdrum sound, I hope he doesn't cling onto that too much :)

    This whole album is an emotional masterpiece but it takes me back to a very dark time in my life that I’d often rather forget. I haven’t heard ALL of their songs but this is Maynard really flexing his range. Try “the package” next, my personal favorite APC song.

    Aloha! It has been a while since I've visited the lounge, but I'm still here! (: I love APC, especially this song. I'd love to see you cover something off of Eat the Elephant (anything but "So Long & Thank You")
    I also want to request TAUK, who just released a new album at the end of September* you can't go wrong with almost anything in their catalog, but maybe start somewhere on their first 3 albums

    Love APC, I was lucky enough to see them open for NIN's Fragility tour back in 2000, which is still one of my all-time favorite concerts. You should definitely check out "Weak and Powerless" off of the same album as "The Outsider." Some of the note choices and harmonies that Maynard makes are super interesting and unexpected!
