In Texas I recently purchased a 2012 Tacoma TRD with 120,000 miles. It spent most of its life in Maine and rust was beginning to form on all the welds and bolts. Being a Navy veteran having experience with shipboard rust mitigation, I prayed and researched all the options. Finally, I was led to use a combination of products that will ensure my investment remains rust free from the inside out. I used naval jelly on rust spots that were visible and I spot abraded with a hand held sand blaster until the under-body was sufficient. Then I wet it out and saturated everything with evaporust then the next day de-greased and cleaned with a 3500 psi pressure washer. This process was super dusty and took over a week crawling under the truck. After letting it dry over the weekend, I retouched up newly formed surface rust with naval jelly and coated the frame with rust remover ( 7 cans). I realize that primer is still porous and I think this is an advantage, because I used Amsoil HD MP undercoating as a final application. For the high chip damage surfaces, I coated with gloss black paint ( outer frame front edges and rear axle , hitch ) Since gloss seals I thought it best to only coat one side of an area to allow for a visual inspection annually. the front plate is to be protected with Raptor liner and Im debating on spraying the front hitch surface and exposed wheel wells . Finally, I went through the engine bay and sanded down all the grounds, vinegar cleaned the wires and used diaelectric grease and touched up all the bolts heads ( wire wheel clean, evapo rust treat and heat and oil quench bolts, using anti-seize for heavy bolts) The project is almost complete and I will certainly think twice before purchasing a rust belt vehicle again. Final note: Toyota inspected the frame and declined replacement with out giving me a reason. I treated all inner cavities, panels and rockers. In my opinion, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Comments and advice are welcome. Thanks from John

Rubberized coatings are the worst kind of corrosion protection. When the rubber layer gets scratched or starts to peel off, water gets in and rust festers underneath the coating. I am a mechanic on commercial passenger aircraft and at work we use dinitrol or ardrox it's whats recommended by the aircraft manufacturer and the aviation grade stuff av30, av40 av08 etc works well . take a look at what happens when you use rubberized coatings th-cam.com/video/nXvl9nt57Kg/w-d-xo.html

One question, why is the hoist used to lift the vehicles rusted through? Technically, if there is one thing that should not rust is the hoist where the product is applied.

    • @Ziebartrochester
      @Ziebartrochester  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The lift shows signs of rust for several reasons. It is not practical, nor safe, to spray the lift with undercoating, then drive on top of it with customers vehicles, and raise it in the air. This lift is a high production lift that is constantly wet and covered in salt that is washed off vehicles.

Negative. Take care of your vehicles and have them undercoated annually and clean them off after the winter season has ended and you most likely won’t have any problems. It’s also best to start with a vehicle manufacturer that builds their vehicles correctly such as Toyota, Honda, almost every vehicle made in Japan.
Make sure it’s being done at a reputable undercoating company as well. I was sold undercoating on my last Truck and it was never done. When I called to either have it “redone” or be reimbursed, I left it up to them, I was told “we use a clear undercoating so the untrained eye can’t tell that anything was done” lol yeeeah suuuuure ya do. I’d also HIGHLY recommend that you DON’T use the solid rubberized undercoating but the liquid undercoating.

just FYI: cars rust mostly from the inside out, and it starts inside the rocker panels from those so called drain holes. because water makes its way up inside and sits between the weld joints and there's no protection or paint inside, most undercoating companies and most car owners dont seem to understand this "factory" flaw, and it the #1 reason undercoatings fail. someone needs to make a device that snakes its way inside the rocker panels and paints on protection. plus sand and rocks from the road gets kicked up by the wheels and sandblasts the outside of the rockers too and they rust even faster and those contact points are always under and towards the front doors and rear wheel well where the rocker panel meets. doors are basically the same way.

    • @travispratt6327

They do make it, lots of undercoating spray guns come with a multi directional wand attachment you can snake through frames and drain holes. There’s even aerosol wands you can buy for any aerosol corrosion prevention you wish.

There are some really damning videos out there of frames that got this coating. Maybe some franchises ruin it for others, don't know. But if rust gets started, it seems to travel underneath these rubberized coatings. If you already have rust, don't coat over it. You need to dissolve it/reform it to a paintable surface. Then use a rust inhibiting primer, and if you topcoat, Mastercoat AG-111 might be the best. But the last coating should be lanolin based.

At one time I worked for friends who owned a Ziebart undercoating business. Annual checkups and touch ups were important. Long-time customers with old cars that had been treated since new with Ziebart rust protection would come in for their annuals and there wouldn't be a speck of rust on them. If you intend to keep the car from many years, and live where they salt the roads, it's a must have option.
I owned a new Corolla and a new Town Car which I had the Ziebart rust proofed. It got a lot more money for them when I eventually sold them because they were rust free.

A big part of rust prevention is yearly maintenance. If you spray the vehicle once and never follow through you are likely to have issues. This is true for many things other than just rust prevention, such as maintaining other parts of your car and your home. Our coating does not wash/run off within a year and is considered permanent but there are scenarios where the coating can be physically damaged and removed.

@@lunaticfringe8559 Our coating creates a barrier against oxygen and water. Rust is the common name for iron oxide, a chemical compound that’s formed when iron is exposed to water and air. When moisture combines with the carbon monoxide in the air, this forms a weak carbonic acid that starts to break down the iron. At the same time, water is being broken down into its separate elements of hydrogen and oxygen. When the oxygen atoms meet and bond with the iron atoms, iron oxide - or rust - results. Ice-melting agents like road salt only help to speed up this chemical reaction from happening on your car’s undercarriage and other exposed areas. Hi I'm Joseph from northern Virginia where we use a lot of salt brine solution in the winter. I'm thinking about getting the Ziebart gold package for my car eventhough it's used. It's a 2018 Nissan Versa in like new shape. No rust, and I want to keep it as long as possible. Also when you apply diamond gloss do you also put it on the wheel covers? If not do the wheel cover and wheels get treated with anything? And what type of warranty would I get with a used car? Thank you

Hi Joseph McLean, each location is individually owned and operated. It is best to call the location nearest to you to answer your questions. Some locations offer applying the Diamond Gloss (or other coatings) to the wheels depending on the condition and material. Best of luck!

Do like some hot rod owners once did. Buy a second car that runs but has no beauty or draw to you and drive that in bad weather. Just a clunker.

Hi Johnathan, I recommend stopping by a Ziebart location so that we can review the car together. There may be options to repair the rust before the application.

Great video! I'm thinking of getting mine done, but must it be black rust proof color? No other color?

I once a fan and a much repeated customer. But they became one of the worst scammers. What needs to be stayed away from is Ziebart. Or you’ll be sorry… Just my actual experience reinforced by others.

That would probably negate the 12 year rust perforation warranty offered with new vehicles

Hi Steve, many manufacture corrosion warranties are automatically negated for vehicles that drive in salt. Please carefully read your warranty, it is more than likely to not be applicable if you live in New York or other areas that use salt on the road.
