Someone asked if Ford made a sedan delivery with rear side windows. Your answer was correct (no) but there were some conversions to standard Tudor sedans that replaced the back panel with a door. Very rare though.
There's one of those floating around my area. It looks kinda silly to me.

@@ModelA I don't believe the oil filter that was mentioned in the video that mounts to the timing cover can be used on a Model B engine if you are using the Model B fuel pump. I think they want to take up the same place...
Man, that oil filter kit for the Model B at Snyder's is expensive! $440.00!!

Learning more all the time. It's nice to have such knowledge at our fingertips! Besides the Mitchell Overdrive, what modifications would you suggest to improve the model A's drive ability on hills or in the mountains. I asked a gentleman from Sedona, Arizona this and he said he simply doesn't drive his enough to worry about it. If I find "That right car" , it will be a driver. Long trips between Phoenix- Albuquerque- El Paso. Alot of miles of hills and inclines. Taking your advice and contacting the local Model guys. Thanks! Really appreciate all you and "Dads" knowledge.
About as far as I would go (in order) would be cast iron brake drums, bonded shoes, high compression head, Mitchell sync transmission, and of course, as mentioned, Mitchell overdrive. That would be one heck of a capable hill country Model A.

The 12 Volt conversion has always been a fun argument in my area of vehicle
Like the Model A community, the WW2 JEEP community has many people sharing their opinions on it.
6V is a great system, as long as you keep good ground.
Argument I've heard is "well, if you're battery takes a dump on you, where are you going to get a new one in a pinch?"
All the Napa stores I've checked has had 6v batteries in stock and sometimes they'll even have 6V bulbs and coils
I cant see any reason to switch to 12V in these antiques
Yes! You're right! Every auto parts store around here has 6V batteries. But since you can start a Model A with a crank or push start, why would the "in a pinch" argument even matter? I always keep a 6V battery ready to go in my shop also. I have NEVER needed it "in a pinch".

I once bought a Model AA truck . A city delivery truck they said was driven down the street, right from off the assembly line. To a shop where they put tail lights and metal side skirts half way up the sides with wood side racks the rest of the way. Used for delivering vegetables or groceries door to door. I even think the rear lights were turn signals. If I remember it was open between the cab an rear bed. Ever hear of such a truck? I sold it to a guy in Brainerd Minnesota . Brian and Debi
There was a lot of engineering put into the A muffler it basically what we would consider modern expansion chamber and you're right that's why it has a taper is the hottest gasses expand in the beginning of the muffler and then as it cools .It routes it back into the pipe and then back into the rear expansion chamber and then back into the tail pipe. I believe there's an after market manufacture that builds a very similar copy the gives you low back pressure and that model a sound..! :)
Yes, Aries. I run Aries mufflers on all my Model A's. It's almost exact reproduction of the factory muffler.

Should you plan to do another one: If I turn my Model A's steering wheel all the way to the right, the right hand tyre will hit the brake rod.
Turning all the way to the left, there's plenty of clearance. Is there a way to adjust the limit stops of the steering box?
And another one: How do you remove stuck window cranks?
Your steering isn't centered. I plan to cover this in an upcoming video very soon.

My problem and question is will a man with a small Ford V-8 and 4-speed in his Model A, who lives in the middle of Illinois, be welcome in a Model A club? Or be laughed out of town!
I would really rather have a factory stock Model A but after 60 years I found almost what I wanted. The little FORD engine is black and sorta looks stock under the 3-door hood and shiny red paint.
It made it thru the park and to the pizza joint for the second Friday in a row.
Awesome videos! Fairly new owner of a 29 Roadster, checked, oiled, lubed and/or repaired everything on the car. Going on a 2000+ mile tour, any way to know/check condition of what seems to be a good running car? (babbit bearings, compression check, gearbox, etc.)
That's the kind of stuff you go over when putting the car together. You can do a compression check at any time, of course. As for gearbox... Take the shift tower off and examine the gears visually. That usually tells you all you need to know. Safe travels!

Paul. There are a lot of questions about “death wobble”. When I bought my model a two years ago had this condition. I checked king pins and they were fine. I checked all ball joints and found they were egg shaped. I replaced the arms and took for a test drive. Still had the wobble off and on. Turns out my issue was the previous owner had installed a rubber radius ball. It had deteriorated over time and only pieces were left. I changed back to original style radius ball clamp with spacer and wobble went away. I think you should mention this as a potential cause of death wobble so that people are aware.
Good point. Thanks John! We always just assume everything is stock and forget that people sometimes install "improvements" that actually make things worse.

I can change the oil a lot of times for the price of the oil filter kit(440.00). I think that I will do with out.
I have the kit on one of my cars with a B motor in it. Don't remember what it cost, but I remember it was used. They occasionally come up at swap meets if you have a keen eye and lots of patience
Paul, a friend of mine had a '31. He had problems with gears clashing. He said that he drained and installed 100 weight gear lube and his clashing went away. The heavier oil must have made the difference. He also had a '49. I saw him roll thru a stop sign and clash the gears to first. I just cringed and thought why not double clutched. Heck, I did that in a '58 Chevy at 40 MPH! (Not a good idea BTW)
That makes sense because the gearbox is supposed to use a very thick oil. The 600W sold today isn't near as thick as the 600W of 1930.
Another fantastic video (and even heard my question!). You mentioned engine pans. What are your thoughts? I put them back on and like them.
I do on the show cars. They are a pain in the butt on the driver cars.
The engine moves independently from the frame so there is constant stress on the pans causing them to break
What type of rear engine mounts does your Model A have? I believe that it's harder to keep engine dust pans mounted when using the Float-A-Motor rear motor mounts due to the "floating" movement. Once installed, thy tend to be all right with the Original Rear Motor Mounts. Maybe Paul can comment further? I believe that those Engine Dust Pans are also intended to help somewhat cool the engine?

Great tech session fellas, question can you do a video on how to remove gas tank, since I am new to theses model A Fords and didn't think the gas tank could be removed. Thks
Thanks Scott! What year and body style? If is a 30/31 Tudor/coupe/etc. you remove the hood and wiring and speedo cable, then the dash rail and steering clamp. Now, go underneath the tank and use your skinniest arm to reach behind and on the sides and remove the clamps, then lift straight up. In some cars, you may have to remove the windshield also.

Question: Is the standard model A engine splash oiling? I heard there is a model C engine that is pressure lubed and has a place for a fuel pump made for 1932+ cars but ended up in combines because the V8 was used in cars. .
It's drip and splash. No pressure. 32 I4's were the same but had a fuel pump.

Re: *Car left outside* Most "A" owners I know hard cover the cars. My "A" is in a temperature controlled garage just because Texas is either too HOT or too COLD and I'm heat intolerant When I restored the vehicle I noticed all the water leaks came from the TOP and the doors. Not much I could do about the doors but I decided to seal the roof with sheet metal. Some Purest give me some $#!+ about it but my roof wood will probably never ROT again and the vehicle look really good.
SO, if one has a solid roof... outside storage would be much more tolerable to the vehicle.
There's a few Model A's in my area modified with full sheet metal roofs also. I really like that idea. Don't tell my dad I said that.

Paul and Bob, I just got a 1930 Standard Tudor. We live at the top of a small mountain, dead end road and it is steep and single lane. Thankfully it is paved! In my modern car when we meet someone one of us has to stop and give way to the other. With my Model A this idea scares me! Lol! If the mechanical brakes and Hand Brake are working like they should, do you think this isn't anything to be concerned about, or should I look into getting the Hydraulic Brakes? All switching to hydraulic brakes does is eliminate the need to adjust the rods. Save yourself the trouble and adjust your rods the way I show in the brake adjustment video. If you do, then your brakes will be able to lock up any time you need them to!

Coolant question-
Distilled water? 50/50 ? Waterless? Etc?
We covered coolant pretty well in FAQ #2. Too much to type. We somewhat disagree on coolant, so we discussed it.
Hello Paul, is there a way to straighten out wheels? Everyone I own has a wobble to it. If repairing bent of wobbly wheels is not an option, who would you recommend I buy new wheels from? Is there a paint that can be used within the gas tank to re-highlight the gas gage numbers? My indicator is hard to read because the paint has faded away.
We take our wheels to a wheel shop to have them straightened. Ours is Stockton Wheel. The numbers on the gas gauge can be filled using a fuel-proof epoxy paint, then a quick wipe with acetone on a rag before it cures to wipe off everything not in a groove.

Have a transmission emergency brake does not have any side bolts. It just goes across the very front of the transmission. What year transmission would that be?

In your own garage or shop. Or, if you're wealthy, send it to an auto restoration shop. First step: Join a Model A club.
Hey Paul, any difference in timing when using a 5.5 head? Been told about using a timing light, confuses the heck out of me. Input is appreciated.
What's a timing light? Ha ha! As compression goes up, you need less advance.
Paul I can’t get the windshield glass out of the frame , are the two flat screws on the side holding the glass
Which year/model Model A? There are screws on the outside of the frame that allow the frame to disassemble and you slide the glass out. Brentwood Bob did an excellent video series on replacing Model A windshields. Search for it and check it out!
I have a question for you guys . I have a 1931 model a roadster . It runs well but when I drive it it have a skip at higher rpm . And runs rough when diverting along. What would you recommend Be to fix it . Thanks jp
Can be lots of things- Either the timing is off, points are dirty or worn, or fuel blockage.
I understand there is a new model A Eng casting with 5 main bearings.
Not sure who makes it. Do you know any thing about it?

I am not sure how to submit a question, so I will do so here. When I make a left hand turn on a mildly bumpy road the passenger door on my '30 pickup swings open. I took it to my model A body man and he worked on it, but it still does it but less frequently. Any ideas how to fix this
Assume your body man knows what he is doing and checked the latch mechanism and adjustment.... It's all in panel alignment. Check body blocks and make sure all body bolts are tight. Put a floor jack under left front axle at the spring perch and jack it up about 8-10 inches. See if you can pull the door open. If so, it's weak frame or misaligned cowl (which determines door hinge line).
Was hoping my question would be on the list but no. So, I have oil come out of the filler and make a mess on the lower hose, starter, and splash apron after I’ve been on a highway drive. I normally will drive her to mid 50’s mph. What is causing my problem? By the way I love your videos & always look forward to the next one.
Hi Vince. I never saw your question in the comments of the video where we asked people to submit questions. That is where these came from. To answer your question, it could be a couple of things. First is excessive crankcase pressure. If your engine has a lot of wear or if the rings are worn or damaged, combustion pressure will escape the combustion chambers and enter the lower half of the motor, pressurizing the crankcase and blowing out oil. Another possibility is a cracked block. Second common cause of this is improper oil fill tube. The stock Model A oil fill tube is smallish in diameter with baffles inside designed to catch oil being slung into the tube. The oil then drips back down into the crankcase. Make sure it isn't overfilled also.

Pretty sure I’ve got a stock filler (has staggered baffles) so I guess I’ll have to look into the other possibilities. Thanks again for your channel & videos they are fantastic!
I inherited a 1928 Model A what type of engine oil, transmission oil, and differential oil do I use??
30 wt. motor oil (or 10-30), transmission and diff use "600W" oil, which is a little thicker than 90-140. You can buy it from the Model A parts suppliers or make your own.

As long as the transmission and rear end are full and the u-joint, wheel bearings, and chassis are sufficiently lubed, yes.

I really enjoyed this Q&A session and look forward to many more. The wisdom the two of you provide is immeasurable. However, I believe you do a disservice to your viewers by refusing to comment on their questions regarding high performance parts and modifications. In my opinion, your refusal to answer such questions implies that people who make such modifications are foolish to do so; and impugns the integrity of manufacturers and the quality of their products. If you believe bone stock is better, that's fine, but please don't blow off the question. Provide your sage wisdom and insight regarding hot rod Model A's.
It occurs to me that if you think bone stock is so good, why do you recommend 5 main bearings over 3; Zenith over Tillotson carburetors; alternators over generators; and Mitchell Overdrive and synchromesh transmissions? It seems like a double standard to me. I'm just saying ...
Simple, my friend- I don't know enough about some of those modifications to be giving anyone advice. I have autism, and I obsess over Model As. I may know quite a bit about them in their stock form, but that doesn't mean I know about the modifications. I do know that switching to 12 volts is a waste. I know that Tillotson carburetors warp and fail. etc. Why? Because it has happened to me. So, I am comfortable commenting on that.
For the record, Zenith is the stock carburetor.
If you want to criticize me, that's OK. Just leave Tina out of it. She des not have autism like me, she just goes by my experience and puts up with my quirks.
How do l get a good one on a budget
Have a family member leave one to you in their will. Just kidding!! Join your nearest Model A club and participate. You will get to know people and they will get to know you. Eventually, when an inexpensive car comes up for sale, you'll be the first to know about it, and everyone will jump in and help you fix it up!

Many years ago I sold my partially restored 1931 Model A and bought a 1926 T touring to restore. The T was fun for awhile but not really a car to drive and enjoy. I had more fu building it than driving it. Since then I've had several Model A sedan drivers. I finally got my dream, a 1931 phaeton.
I already realize a closed car would be better. I'd suggest a tudor or fordor Model A sedan.
@@modeladenny1218 Yes the model A is more practical and easier to drive but the Model T has history and mechanical design that I find facinating.
@@mikewysko2268 I've lived history and it ain't practical. Buy a Model T, play with it. Then get a decent Model A and go have fun.
