Very enjoyable Q&A, thanks Bob, Paul and Hal. So many items covered on this one that you could watch it several times and learn a fix each time. The float leveling segment was one that I liked, thanks for the tip, well maybe a reminder, cause I did learn this from my dad back in the early 70's. I guess we just forget or grow complacent. If I remember correctly, the float was indeed slightly slant when closed.
I'll check the intake manifold for leaks - sadly, the gaskets with holes where the studs go aren't available over here,
and I've had very bad experience with the copper ones I could get my hands on (fitment wise).
I use gland rings (as they also help align the gaskets upon install), but who knows!

Adrian, can we help by sending you the gaskets you need, or other parts? It seems silly that today with global package delivery that some items are scarce regionally. I have German ancestors as many Americans do.
WOW! Thanks guys! So much info! It's one thing that modern car owners don't really have to worry about is the maintenance of lubricating your vehicle, we just drive down to the dealership and they do it. With these old cars, YOU have to make sure the vehicle is properly lubricated at ALL points. Thanks for bringing that up!

One of my old bosses had a 1928 Whippet two-door, and we hand-made every gasket for that car. That was a big job. Have fun with the Model A's, Mike

I appreciate the advice about the float a motor vs the stock motor mounts and will take it into consideration. However I still don’t know what surface or which two points one would hold an instrument against to measure the degree of tilt. Thanks for your help. Paul, you can count on my vote!

Because I live on the East coast, I'd add a heater accessory and directional signal signals along with LED lights for safety at night.

Still remember riding in my grandparents' Model T. When my folks bought the Model A it was the coolest thing ever. Still cool. Never not been cool.

Years ago even on more modern drum brake systems, wear would happen due to guys replacing shoes and not lubricating all the points where the shoe touches metal. I have seen backing plates that have holes cut through them due to a lack of lubrication. Spring sets that have been installed the wrong way will cause problems as well. Note, always check the wheel cylinders for leakage by pulling back the dust cover boot and looking for brake fluid inside the boot, then you know that you need to rebuild or replace the wheel cylinder. Have fun, guys, and take care, Mike GM/DELCO/ASE Master.
Good tip for hydraulic brakes, as some Model A’s have been converted from their original 100% mechanical setup.
Thanks so much for your videos.. Do you have any tricks up your sleeves for compressing water pump packings, 2 coils of rope, while trying to get the threads of the brass adjusting nut to engage with the threads of the water pump housing?
I just shove everything together and catch a thread and then start cranking down until the shaft feels like it's getting snug, then rotate it around and tighten again. Admittedly, I've only had to repack a water pump a few times.
For your Information...I think that some of my water pump parts might be aftermarket parts and off in dimension. After spending about two hours trying to create a jam fit with two coils of graphite packing rope. I cut a second rope to length and unbraided the rope. It had six strands, then I braided three strands together. Time spent, 5 minutes for this operation. One full rope and a half-braided rope works just fine. I might have to repack more often, but it works. @@ModelA
Paul... I follow you quite often and you have been a major support in my efforts to maintain my 31 Deluxe Phaeton. Question: you mentioned you quite often use a Tillotson float as a replacement for the cork gas gage float... You have stumped me on how to fit this float in the gas gage dash hole... do you cut it apart and make it smaller? I am hoping that you can pull back the curtain and tell me you trick....
There are two types of Tilly floats. The small round barrel shape one is the one I use. Fits through the hole just barely.
Paul, have you ever heard of or seen methanol and water injection on model a’s for an octane boost? I met and older gentleman that had it and I got a picture of it. The bottle was mounted and looked factory on the drivers side of the firewall engine bay and it fed in the intake manifold and that was it. The car appeared very stock but had this. Never heard of it before then.
Haven't seen it. But I have seen a head gaket leak that lets water into the cylinders.
Good knowledge. If you take in vehicles to checkout any minor problems I would bring mine to you and stay a week or so and help do any work that you find. Just have not found a good model A mechanic here in North Central Florida yet had my 1930 model A coup si ce March.

I have some 1928 original headlights I am restoring for wall display I am wondering if I can use regular cork gasket material or rubber for the rim of headlights and do you have to use the clip pins to contain the ring when there is a spring bracket on them now ?
I always use the cork gaskets. WAY better than rubber ones. And I use the clips because they hold the lens in to the ring so it doesn't fall out and break when you have to open it.
@@ModelA thank you very much for your reply , By the way do you know anyone who sells the lens clips and how thick does the cork gasket have to be for good sealing about a 1/8" thick or better 3/16ths thickness.?
At 15:45 or there abouts Bob talks about a radiator shop you use for getting the 4 row, 9 fin radiators made. What shop do you use? I'm sure most shops could build it but one that has done them in the past, and you've commented in another video about how going up some hills both of your cars drive up hills without any problems. Gathering vendor info at this time. Thanks. ~ Miles

Hi Paul... I just picked up a 31 Roadster Jalopy from the original family... The body is totally rust free however the engine is completely seized and the gastank is the only thing with rust holes!
The electrical was changed to 12 volt and some leaves in the springs were removed to lower the ride... I was told that the lower stance would hinder the mechanical brake geometry... is that true?

The guy with the carburetor trouble should install a marvel carb. He’ll never have any problems.

Question: Is it a good idea to paint the firewall without removing parts? It requires paint chipping removal and rust treatment. What products should I use?
I would remove everything from it and pull the engine if I had to redo a firewall. Preferably pull the body off the frame though.
Interesting about motor mounts in this video. My radiator hole is not Ali dry with the center of the drive shaft. What motor mounts do you recommend to correct this problem?

Seat belts in colorado are mandatory if you dont have them it can be a 1500 $ fine ! per person that is unbelted !
Paul, another subject has just popped up. Reducing the weight of the flywheel to complete a counterbalanced crankshaft. modification. Have you had any experience with people that have done this? I've heard that with a better balanced drive train in the engine, it can turn faster. Does higher RPM,s create any advantage in either H.P or torque? Also with higher RPM's would this cause crank lubrication a problem? They also would install a diaphragm type clutch pressure plate, do see any advantage? It seems to me that this original engine design must have had extra heavy duty main bearings installed to handle the stresses of piston pulses with no counterweights on the crankshaft and the huge weight of the flywheel.

Nice video guys. Thanks for doing it. While I don't 100% agree with all the tips I have to keep remembering California Model A cars have a different standard. Californians are more into overdrives, sixteen-inch wheels, alternators, 12-volt systems, and plastic radiator fans. Different strokes I guess.
We are not into 12 volt systems, 16" wheels, or plastic radiator fans!
Robert should write a do it yourself mechanics book with knowledge he has its knowledge that will be gone when his time comes

We have eight double A home made Ford tractors and a Studebaker , and a Graham Brothers tractor.
