    Thank you very much for these videos! I’m 35 now, and now own my Grandpa’s 1928 Model A Tudor sedan. This is the first car I ever drove and how I learned to drive a manual(other than tractors haha). It’s amazing how much fun and simple these cars are to work on when they’re original! I’m slowly working on restoring it, though it’s a slow process as my wife and I were blessed in January with twin boys. I can’t wait to see if one or both of them have interest in driving and working on it with me!

    Hey, Paul! I built a 1920`s Car 1925 Dodge that had very bad axles and no engine, I am not a rodder! But this Car GOD and I built, It was pretty bad! Now I LOVE it! At that I Restored most all original outside, But I had to replace the Rear and Front axles! With a Ford Thunderbird Rear Axle, And a Chevrolet front straight axle with modified to fit Ford F 150 Ford Truck Brake Back plates and Drums and rear Ford Drums and Back Plates on the rear axle! I noted the smaller size brake cylinders on the rear axle, compared to the larger front cylinders on the front, So I figured out it`s a 60% front 40% rear deal! BOY this Car Stops! Well I thought about it for a wile, A friend of mine always says He hates His Brakes on His Model A Ford, So I said let Me try something, So I used the ford method of setting brakes "BUT IN REVERSE" The Front locks up first! This makes the load push the Car down forward, causing the Car to stop Super Great! HE LOVES IT! I have done this on 6 Model A Fords so far, With Great results! Something to think about! Give it a try!

    Love the wide Geraldines on the tires. Geraldines=wide whitewalls. You'd be surprised at how much ft.lbs. of torque that ratchet bar does. Take a Real torque wrench and back that off and measure it. I didn't think that I put that much torque on a wheel change one day. Wife drove the car. Wheel came of when she was at 60mph. Come to find out that over torqueing caused a crack in the lug nut sleeves that holds the wheel on. She didn't wreck but left a gouge in the road about 1/4 mile and grounded off the rotor quite a bit. I made damn sure I properly torqued the next time. That is a really nice looking car. Love the colors. They all work well together.

    I just don’t understand why people would be upset about calling a brake lining a brake shoe. Paul is doing us all a favor by taking us along with him, teaching us very valuable info. This has to be one of my least favorite things about TH-cam or social media. Keep up the great work Paul! Axle nut torque is a controversial subject... I used the later/larger Ford juice brake axle nuts and torqued them to 250ft lbs per Ford barn. Paul do you agree with the red books lug nuts torque of 64ftlb?

    • @ModelA

      I torque lug nuts to where they feel right. No idea what that is, but it is a real feel that you get after a while. I'm guessing it's in the neighborhood of the red book's figure, but don't even want to check. Never had one come loose and only stripped one in many years.

I absolutely love your channel and hope and dream of having a model A one day myself. In a previous comment on another video of yours I thanked you for converting me. Your channel is starting to give me high school auto mechanics class flashbacks. I don't think I've done a brake job since then. I wish modern cars were designed for mere mortals to work on like older cars were. I haven't even done anything as simple as my own oil changes since probably somewhere around the mid '90s. These days, there's a garage walking distance from where I work. I can drop my vehicle off on my way in to work or after lunch for an oil change. It's ready before I get off of work, doesn't cost much more than it would cost for me to buy all the stuff to do it myself, and I don't have to deal with disposing of the used oil. As for modern car designs - I've had a slight oil leak for quite a while now. It would only take a simple valve cover gasket replacement to fix it. But, the engine is sideways and the rear valve cover is almost under the dash. The estimate I got for having the valve cover gaskets replaced was over $300 due to the labor involved.

      I've bought three that burned up much of the wiring on the way home from buying them. A 1941 Ford because the tail end wires were against the tail pipe. A 1955 Chevy and a 1949 Ford because everything from telephone wire to 2 gauge wire and combinations of everything in between was used. Mostly with cheap electrical tape not taped.
      After the smoke and flames cleared, a quick patch job, and luck, each made it home. Nuthin like the smell of burning wires on the way home with a new project.

    Brake shoes is another term equivalent to linings...😉
    VW Bugs need about 270 ft.lbs on the rear axle nuts. There is a tool for them called the Torque Multiplier that multiplies the torque you put in it 9 times. It works for the flywheel and the rear axle nuts. So for the 270 for the rear axles you only put 30 ft.lbs on the wrench. The tool is about $100 or less; pays for itself the first time you use it.

    Paul, you always amaze me and I never know what that will be. This time the Brake Spring Removal Tool!
    The "Tina Fan" was rich and got me laughing. However Paul, you've corrupted my mind again because now every time that I see a wheel either coming-off or going-on I hear the word "Jewelry".
    Question: If the holes in the wheels are worn-out. Do the washers behind the lug-nuts center the wheel?
    Regarding the Model A's themselves I have to say that a number of times I've been surprised and impressed by technology the engineer's of the day had, and implemented. And, I'm not a newbie having been a life long car guy and gear head. But often things that I thought hadn't been around until decades later have turned up on the Model A's.
    I hope your back is doing much better. God Bless.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Jewelry" was because of those lug nut washers (rings) falling off onto the floor. They look and sound like someone's rings hitting the floor. I'm not sure how well they center the wheel once the lug holes are wallered out. They mainly just make you feel better, guess. My policy: If a US dime fits through any of the holes, replace the wheel. Exception: If the Model A is a hooptie.

      If you think about it, with a ratchet or breaker bar any longer than 12”, you are multiplying the torque so you would have to put considerably less than 125lbs of pressure if using a 24” or even 18” breaker bar. I agree with the other comment that you likely were very close in this video. I think the later banjos took 200-250ft pounds or something like that. They also require a robust puller though. Hey Paul,
    Happy memorial Day. I hope you get to enjoy it with your family. This might be a long comment. So I'm sorry for that.
    First, where would one find new rims for a model a. Do they sell them at parts stores.
    Second, how do you feel about period hotroding. Not putting a new v8 in it or anything. But using pre-war and even maybe a little post-wae parts to make a classic "hot-rod."
    Third, tell your wife I loved her line video. I'm going through all your videos 1 by 1 just because that's as close as I can get to a Model A at the moment. I noticed she was getting a lot of flack for that. I thought it was great. Really. Informative, well timed, easy to follow. Overall a great video.

      Hi Brantley.
      Lots to address here. New Model A wheels are available from the usual suppliers. However, original Model A wheels are still plentiful. As for "period hot rodding"... Just no. "Period hot rodding" in 1930 was no hot rodding. Just use it and survive the tough times. Giving the car a wash and by-hand wax was "hot rodding".
      The all-original fordor has been in our family.

      OK. Best bet is wait until the wiring is replaced and everything is safe and working properly. We'll get there eventually.

    Paul if your using 20 year old gas, your actually using paint thinner. Thank you.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't even think it's good enough to be paint thinner.

    • @robertreisner6119
      @robertreisner6119 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be a weak thinner at the age of the fuel. Do you plan to drain It? If so it would help. I have done this on a 90 year old Fordson tractor.

      @@robertreisner6119 Yes, planning to drain it and flush the tank/lines.

      Yes I agree the lines and if it has a filter to be cleaned as well, the one issue I had on the Fordson tractor was silt from a volcanic eruption 120 miles away 4 times over the years...plus a couple of eathquacks.

    Why show the disassembly and assembly of the brakes ... from TEN FEET AWAY ... in which nobody can see WTF you're doing?
    You also padded the video with the poor quality recap from last episode ... to make it longer. Not better, just longer.
    Your title just says " .. to drive the 1931 Ford Model A." ... so you roped in a lot of people who now have to suffer through this first part.
    So ... you finally got a THUMB DOWN for false advertising and video padding.
