Imagine you were a crime inspector:
"Well, no traces of the murderer, but I found where he parked his car, and THAT drip pattern can sure as heck only come from a '29 Town Sedan with a balanced crank and High Speed rear end in it" xD
Edit: So your Model A has a Model B engine in it, huh?
I herewith declare interest in a side-to-side comparison - not only technically, but also performance-wise :D

Paul -- I thought I would let you know that I really enjoy your videos (especially the "most asked questions" -- man that was a classic). I wish I had gotten into Model A's in my time as a car nut. My car of choice is a 1964 Austin Mini Countryman Woodie Wagon -- a very long name for a very short car. Your leaks are (to me) extremely minimal but deserving of attention nonetheless. The standing joke about British cars is that "They do not leak -- they mark their territory." Or "They are designed to leak so that the underside of the car is properly lubricated." Keep up your wonderful videos and I will keep watching. Motor on! - Bob Amaral

Paul, my guess about the synthetics causing leaks would be due to the fact than in synthetics your hydrocarbon chains are much more uniform in size meaning each molecule is very similar from one to another. However, with conventional oils they can vary greatly meaning there are some much larger molecules scattered throughout the oil. These larger molecules can clump together and sometimes plug up very minuscule leaks.

The front diff on my Freightliner caught on fire one day in N.Y. a COLD winter day too. Mech. never replaced the gear lube when changing out the old stuff. Surprised I made it a 1,000 miles before the fire. And yes, he got fired. Don't think it will happen to you cause of the maint. you do so well.

I am by no-means, an expert on oil/lubricants, but the primary difference between synthetic and organic oil at rest is the viscosity and the surface tension. Both of these factors contribute to its ability to “wick” between seals and surfaces. (Retired mechanical/biomedical engineer)

I rebuilt a 1930 Towncar last year, everything worked fine, except the motor was a little noisey, so I had it rebuilt, reinstalled it 2 weeks ago. After the idle break in period, I took it out on the road, now when I hit the brakes they stick for a second and the car wants to shut off (or does) I installed a brake kit last year (which worked fine at the time) that allows the shoes to float and self center in drums (the instructions said to leave the long shoe spring off the rear shoes, I just reinstalled the springs thinking they would help the shoes to release) Now when I left my garage (my drive slopes down hill from garage) when I hit the brakes the pedal stays partially depressed and the motor slows down til it shuts off, turned the car around and let it drift in reverse and hit the brakes everything is fine brakes release normally and car stays running. I'm now going to take the longer shoe springs back off, because that worsened the problem. The carb is a brand new Zenith, and the float is properly set. So how the hell can the brakes effect the idle of the car just sitting there in a semi depressed state?!?

Hi Paul, yes, synthetics leak more. I think that's why they move better. Try a product called E-Z Turn. Gas proof. Comes in a tube. Real thick paste. Perfect for the gas shut-off valve. I use it on all gas connections. Tube suggests many other uses, and I've tried it. Works good. Says it's an anti-seize too. I use it on my water return tube gasket and bolts, also the hoses, makes them easy to get off and on and helps them seal. Technically Teflon tape is a lube not a seal so I've been told. I've seen lots of carb bowls with tape floating in them. I hate that stuff anyway. I never wind it right! As far as leaks, I'm 59 and I leak!

On pipe thread type plugs I find Teflon tape is fiddly and it isn’t as reliable as Teflon pipe dope or better yet Marine TEF GEL (TEF for marine applications is just a finer version of pipe dope.
TEF GEL can be bought in an ez to use syringe which makes it very quick to apply. Wipe the plug clean, apply a little TEF smooth with finger screw it in. It won’t leak, back out, corode, or freeze.
The marine version in the syringe is a little more costly than plumbing version but it will last forever and not separate it’s carrier.
TEF in marine environments even prevents galvanic corrosion between threads with fasteners of dissimilar metals and it is tenacious. I could se experimenting with it to replace lube on small ball joint type linkages. The TEF is white so any metal wear would show up as gray if it doesn’t work.
You wouldn’t want to use this stuff inside a carburetor or anything that could have small orfices.

Paul, As always, an interesting video. Thank You for your effort in bringing it to us. Your videos have piqued my interest in the Model A and I'm enjoying the learning process I'm getting from you.
I'm an older gear head but my familiarity doesn't go as far back as Model A's. In this video I'd like to know what is mounted under the carburetor that looks like a gauge housing? I've seen firewall mounted oil pressure gauges but I don't think a gauge face could be viewed when mounted beneath the carburetor. So I'm stumped as to what that might be.
Regarding Synthetic oils (you probably know this) generally when a leak begins after switching to synthetic oil it's due to a leak that was already present but has been sealed up with a build-up of baked-on petroleum oil. Since synthetics don't bake-on or coke-up their detergents are more powerful and clean away what the petroleum oil had left behind, thus the already present leak will at some point begin leaking. I suspect that's what's going on with this car, whereas the hard top car probably has newer seals so it doesn't leak.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi DM. That is an oil pressure gauge. You have to have the hood up and your face in the right spot to read it. It was on the motor when I bought it, and somewhat useful since this is a full pressure motor.

Also, (in another video comment) Thanks for sending me the location of your beautiful countryside. I didn't recognize the county name, so I did a search and was surprised to learn it's in California. I thought the terrain in your videos looked somewhat central and just east of the Rockies. I'm in Connecticut so not real familiar with out west except for some time in SoCal.

@@ModelA A video of that upcoming trip would be welcome. I also follow Tyler Hoover from that area.
I want to say that you don't have to be a celebrity or a youtube star. I'm glad that you're not. I think you're better than that, you have honesty, wholesomeness, and I'm certain integrity as well. I'm a pretty good judge of character and I think you're a good man. You bring more to the videos than I think you realize. Part of that is, you're real and you have a kind and decent demeanor that comes forth in your videos. Further, your way-of-being is comforting.
I don't want to be stressed-out by watching hyper people screaming about anything, and particularly hateful politically motivated people like on the news, those constantly telling us that everything about our country has something wrong with it, and unless one falls into certain groups, it's all the fault of other groups. I don't want to be told that.
I want to listen to guys like you saying things like, take a look at this, look at what we accomplished by the late 1920's, and look at how amazing that is.
I don't want to hear from rotten creeps working to bend our country into something different because they say so. It sickens me that there are so many big university graduates and under graduates that hate our country and everything about it that came prior to them, or prior to activism in the Vietnam era, talking like experts when they weren't even there because they weren't born yet. Or, they were there in the Viet Nam era activism but still holding a candle for change. How disgusting.
I want to listen to you and people like you that know our country is great and has been wonderful all along. I want to hear from people that know we have a lot of good in this country and that American's are good people. Not voices for needless change.
I know that was too much of a rant, but it's important to me in stressing that you be clear about your bringing more to your videos than what you may have realized.
Something else you need to know about what you bring in your videos is that over the years I've read commenter's saying things like "I was so depressed, then youtube emailed that you just released a new video, so now I know it going to be a great day" I've also read "I was contemplating suicide but your video... and I know that would have been a mistake because things are going to turn out right".
And I've read others comments like these that people had been grateful for a video or the channel because it helped them get though a very bad time.
So Paul, you might never know who you're helping, not everyone is as vocal as I am, and still other people might be too ashamed of what they're experiencing to write and thank you for the difference that you make. But they're out there.
For myself, I've been doing the stay-at-home mandate for almost a year now. We even still have to have groceries delivered.
I have someone in the house that's at high-risk / low survival expectation were they to get the COVID.
The only time I get out of the house is for the absolute must-do's, or if I take a drive and not get out of my car other than for gasoline. I'm tired of living this. But your videos have help a lot with that. And when I catch up on watch later videos, I'm going to binge watch all of yours.
Why is it so important that I've written all this?
In part, it's good for you to know that you make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Another reason is that some people that comments can range from being cranky to thoughtless to insulting to awful to hateful. I see all of these things regularly in my youtube viewing. And I think after a while of reading from these commenter's the person with the channel can feel defeated and like they're not making the difference that they had intended on. And I'm sure some of the people behind the channel decide to give up because it's not worth the effort.
Your videos always deserve a thumbs up, and none of your videos that I've watched have ever deserved a bad comment.
So it's important because I don't want you to give up, and I'm sure a lot of people don't want you to give up either.
I'm not saying in any way that you're delicate or that you can't take it. I'm just saying that any of us can be worn down.
Thank you very much for the effort you put in to bring us your videos. And may God Bless You and Yours.
Paul, please don't feel like you have to answer this. I've said an awful lot for you to address. I'm not going to feel badly. I know you read all the comments. Please keep being you and keep the channel going because you make a wonderful difference.

@@discerningmind DM, How did you know that I was beginning to feel worn down? Perhaps you were lead by the Holy Spirit on this comment? All I know is, you comment was truly heart-felt, and I am very grateful to you for sharing it.
I know that the United States is the greatest nation on the planet, and I have great pride in it. I make no apologies for my patriotism, or faith in God. I know that isn't popular these days, and I don't care. Sure, it holds me back because about half the population disagrees with that or wants to "cancel" me. However, I also know that our integrity is more important. When I answer to God, the plan is that I will be pleasing to Him.

Paul, at the 12:35 point you mention that, at the bottom of the clutch housing, is a cotter pin that keeps the housing opening clear. My newly purchased 1930 Model A Tudor has a very small diameter bolt that extends through that hole with no provision to thread a cotter pin through. Any idea what I can do to correct it without extensive work?

    • @ModelA

Someone put a bolt in there for some reason. To get inside there, you need to either pull the motor or the rear end and trans. When it's time for a new clutch, worry about it then.

    • @ModelA

Hello, CR! two things required for combustion-
      1. Proper fuel/air mixture
      2. Properly timed spark
Check to see if you are getting fuel. Use a 9/16 wrench and remove the 9/16 boot from the bottom of your Zenith carburetor. Turn the gas valve on and observe. Gas should gush out of the float valve and the bowl should be full. If so, reassemble.
Next, check for spark. If your Model A is timed properly, and you have spark, it should run.
See the "How to start a Ford Model A" for the procedure, just in case.

Likely combustion gasses and pressure getting into the water jacket under load. Fairly common. Solution is usually to torque head or replace head gasket. Might possibly be warped head or block deck, but that's rare.
