    It appears Suzuki has copied Toyota’s homework and produced an EV that is already behind the curve even before it’s been launched. Sounds like they plan to sit back, watch the sales not hit their internal target and then claim that EVs don’t sell so they’re sticking to hybrids…..
    Sorry, I’ve got my cynical hat on 😅

    Thanks for this Electrifying.
    As an owner of a 2019 Vitara from new I believe I understand what Vitaras are about: cheap, go-anywhere small crossovers/SUVs. You were spot on with that remark.
    They are not off-road cars but are miles better than the typical small crossovers with 2WD and 1 liter engine. Mine has gone up mountain trails leading to various ski resorts with cheap Hankook tires, where fancy xdrives and the likes made a fool of themselves. If this is the main difference between e-Vitaras and the rest (as it is for the ICE version), then it’s a winner for many. But it’ll still be a second or a third car for the wealthy family, as any other EV. Or the only car for a city person who prefers the train for long trips.
    Also, Suzuki reliability seemed even better than Toyota, as per the latest Carwow video. We also own a 2024 Highlander, so we’ll see about that.

    This car uses blade batteries manufactured by BYD. Therefore, the real-world range should be similar. A 61kWh battery may provide about 450-500 kms of range. This is merely a "compliance" car. I do not believe that any Japanese manufacturer has taken EVs seriously.

    Wait a minute, for a run of the mill family SUV I actually think that’s a really smart looking car. It has some rather unique lines and creases that actually work really well together, the front and rear light signature gives the car a more upmarket look too. Even more surprising, the interior looks fairly premium also! Fair play Suzuki, fair play. Shame about the small boot and not so great range figures though, bit of a let down there.

    Thank you for the preview.
    If you do not like the handle “city car” (I don’t) you might coin the phrase”country car”. This has a solid use case for anywhere in the countryside which has bad lanes and B roads in winter, muddy fields and tracks, a farm to get round, an emergency to get to in all weathers. It does some of the job the old Landrover Defender did before it got too huge and complicated. As the review suggests price will be important but Landrover have left a gaping space where the old Defender used to be, so maybe the 4WD version can be a bit more expensive than you might think. I think this might do something which other EVs simply do not.

    • @ZookOffRoad-l3k
      @ZookOffRoad-l3k 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The only off-roaders were the (old) Grand Vitara and the Jimny. The AWD ones (Vitara, S-Cross) can be taken off-road but for anything more than light off-roading you need to modify the suspension (lift, shocks, etc), and a bunch of other things too (these cars don't have any rated recovery points - and you definitely need some for off-roading, and of course also no way at all to mount a winch, etc). And, the last thing you'd ever want to use off-road is an EV.

    Regarding efficiency. I see they haven't done their homework. All efficient EVs hide widescreen wipers a bit behind the bonnet so they are out of the airstream. It makes it a bit painful to clean on my BYD because you can't just fully lift them up unless you select wipers service mode in the infotainment screen and they move up and stop there. But this is not a big deal. Here I see they have wipers exposed. My guess suzuki efficiency won't be great. And those screens on different levels, just why. If they separated them and removed this big empty black space above instrument cluster, it would look much better.

I agree that these Suzuki numbers make no sense but then nothing to do with certified range testing, whether liquid fuel or electrons, makes any real world sense anyway. Since when does a hybrid do 200+ mpg? What a stupid figure! As for the electric numbers, pure tosh anyway. Sure we have WLTP figures but who drives like that? Which is similar to what you get out of a BYD Atto 3 60.5kWh or a Vauxhall Mokka-e 50kWh respectively. So definitely not class leading but in the general ballpark area of similar cars to itself.

      Suzuki doesn't have close contact with either you've mentioned - they're Korean companies who's basically the same underneath if you look a bit deep, and they have no interest working with Suzuki much either (they are willing to work with Toyota though, if you've heard of the racing festival both held in Korea a few weeks ago). Suzuki has closer ties to Toyota, which doesn't have any trust in making EVs. Don't even say Mazda or Subaru or Nissan or Mitsubishi either, Mazda is kinda lazy on this regard aswell despite reviving the rotaries to be a range extender for EVs, while Subaru is just following Toyota's game, Mitsubishi is basically a zombie now, and Nissan... Well, you'd be hard pressed to find many Kicks and Leafs out in the wild now. If there's any good manufacturer that can help with good EVs, they'd have to look way over seas to either Lucid or Rivian.

    Next, this car has a relatively small battery, so the average charge rate will be quite low. Therefore, to satisfy your demands, the car would need a bigger battery, which will be more costly, and less appealing to the buyers, etc....

    • @SusieSmart
      @SusieSmart 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmmm. The Citroen eC4 can charge from 10-80% in 26 mins despite having a lower peak rate. This will add around 181 miles of official range whereas the Suzuki will take 4 mins longer to add just 136 miles of range.
      If anything, it’s Suzuki who are trying to impress with their 150kW peak, not Electrifying.
      Saying you need a bigger battery to have better recharging times just doesn’t ring true when you look at some of the Suzuki’s competitors. It’s just another out of date from a Japanese manufacturer who will profess that EV’s are selling well because they make crap EV’s

    It has got a blade battery - that is a BIG plus - you can rapid-charge it "to death", therefore having less deprivation of the battery in the long run. However when it comes to that Suzuki is late to the party - that has somewhat to do with japanese carmakers being conservate when it comes to EVs. They will wait to see what other carmakers do before deciding "to go full Tesla". The car looks cool to me imho - shouldn't this make the Suzuki the first japanese carmaker to dipping their toes in the EV-water? Albeit Toyota (and Subaru) half-assing it with their bZ4x (Solterra)....? It will be very popular in Norway depending on the price, although we love everything 4x4.

    Can we just standardise 20-80% or something it feels like charging drops off a cliff after 70%

    • @David_Polak
      @David_Polak 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Marketing has understood that nowadays you can't sell a charging time over 30 minutes. So they are just cheating when reducing the percentages.
      Often that is 20-80% instead of the usual 10-80%. But 15-70%, wow, I've never heard those numbers. That's just an incredibly poor charging performance.
      If they were brave and honest, they would say the 10-80% charging time is 45 minutes. Which was the norm 10 years ago. But that wouldn't sell.

    It has some slightly (new model) Dacia Duster looks.... The brown interior looks good. Audi did a study decades ago, and it found shades of brown in car interiors promoted a more relaxing feeling while you drove..... Make of that what you will.... There didn't appear to be any under knee/under thigh support when you sat in the back Nicola. I can't imagine it being too comfortable on longer trips....

      Suzuki is only doing it because they want to have an EV so they have the rights to say "here, we have an electric car now. Happy? Good. We'll be continuing to make the Jimny and Swift as usual, don't bother us anymore."
      If you notice, all Japanese car companies seem skeptical with EVs and isn't giving their full might in developing EVs. At most, for example Toyota, will only go as far as PHEVs and Hydrogen, while not giving much thought in their EV (coughcough bZ4x)

    If it starts at £30k, it has a chance of selling, in spite of mediocre EV bits. The interior is more interesting than the exterior, but you are right that screen surround is rubbish though. As for not making a BEV Jimny, yet more proof that that Japanese manufacturers have lost the plot. If Suzuki think that a crappy combustion engine is what makes a Jimny any good, they are clueless. A BEV Jimny would be awesome, a BEV soft-top Samurai would be even better
