There was another channel(name forgotten) that used a slow-motion camera which showed the fluted rounds they tested were actually yawing/tumbling. It is good to see Brian test these again. With the tests I recall seeing him perform with the fluted rounds they have managed to stop within the 12"-18" mark. Oftentimes ending up backwards. Which is a sure sign that they indeed tumbled. Seeing that happen once again gives me greater belief in these as a good option for the .380 ACP, standard pressure .38 Special, and possibly even weaker rounds. If you live in an area where hollow points are illegal, these might be a decent option for the larger calibers also to get better performance than FMJ.
JHP needs speed to perform, and 9mm never had speed issues, but slow rounds like 38 and 45 don’t do well in JHP, so ARX and alike are much better option. In 9mm you’ll benefit from a weight loss and it’s still a high energy round.
Agreed. Penetration to the vitals or CNS is what does the job and plain old ball works just fine if you put it in the right place. All the 'boutique bullets' can do is increase the tissue disruption along the way...but you always compromise penetration with expansion. Stopping a fight by bleeding out the bad guy will happen quicker with more tissue damage but that's not an ideal way to go and only marginally more effective than non-expanding ball. Bullet placement is 90% of how well a round works so all the bullet development is trying to increase the 10% left and mostly marketing IMHO.
ARX looks pretty decent. I have been running Underwood Xtreme Defenders in my .380 pocket carries primarily so it's good to have other similar options. Going to pick up one of those bodyguards next year for sure.
The Underwood's wanted to Fail to feed very often in my G42 and LCP Max. I switched back to HST in the 42 and FMJ in the Max. The Max seems to choke with anything that isn't FMJ
Hey brother. I've never heard of these rounds before, but they look wicked. Thanks for sharing brother! Keep those great videos coming. The more you post the more I watch!! Thanks for all you do Sir!!
I have Capral tunnel syndrome and arthritis in my hands so most of the time i carry my 380s. When I want to carry 9mm I use these in the NOVX brand. Light recoil and the hybrid case along with the light bullet shaves the weight off a full magazine making for lighter carry also. Thanks for the video.
Norma has a version of this called the NXD but the flutes are different. I got some recently in 38 special to go with a snub nose revolver. I think the Underwood Xtreme Penetrator and Defender are better due to being heavier and being a solid copper bullet but from tests I have see in your tests and others, these ARX do seem to do what they claim.
Great video tools. I have carried those interceptors in my p3at for years and years. I had to replace my carry ammo a couple days ago and I just decided it's winter and I'm broke so fmj it is lol. I'm going to get some flat nose fmj next trip to sportsman warehouse though. I just can't justify the price of solid copper fluted rounds. 40 dollars for 20 rounds, I wouldn't have any left after I tested if it would cycle ok. Even though incerceptor type rounds are cheaper Im not so sure these copper/polymer bullets would cut it against things like bone. Have a great Christmas
I love the channel and really appreciate all the testing that you do. I am subscribed and watch all of your videos, but don't always comment. I really like the way you acknowledge all of your comments. It shows you want to know what people think of the videos. I live in the city so I don't get to shoot much. I wish I could could just go out and shoot like you do. It's so cool that you have all of that open land to shoot on.
thats a great idea... they could call it something like the 9x18 or the 9x19 or something really weird like the 9x21! ... Nah... probably wont ever happen
These are excellent for AR9 carbines. Allows for flat shooting at 200+ yards, over 2000fps, can use the same mags as your handgun, bigger diameter over the 5.56 and with equal weight.
It's my understanding that the Inceptor round is designed to tumble, as in slowing overpenetration to prevent collateral damage. I believe the round was originally developed in an urban environment where that factor would be necessitated. Here is an excerpt form an article published in 2015 about it. "Upon entering soft tissue, the specially designed grooves in the nose harness the soft tissue and constrict, pressurize and eject it at 1.5 to 2 times the directional speed of the bullet. This is the well-known Venturi Effect. As the bullet penetrates, it tumbles in a controlled, predictable fashion that delivers consistent terminal performance that equals or exceeds conventional hollow-point designs without over penetrating."
@@calangel Fair enough. Unfortunately, I don’t have both. That said, I must admit I prefer something smaller and easier to handle. When it goes down, it is all about proficiency and shot placement.
Makes you wonder what happens if it hits bone. I carried these for a while in my LCP, but noticed a lot of set back and the cases corroded like crazy. Thanks Tools.
Pleasantly surprised on both. Not my choice. But I picked up a box of various ammo in a show a couple years ago and there was a box of 9 of these. Not terrible results. Thank you.
Simunition used to make a brand of frangible ammo called Greenshield. Those projectiles were made of compressed copper and some type of bonding material, probably some type of polymer, I still have some in 9mil and 556. These remind me of these We used them for CQB and did alot of testing on them, they would punch right through walls, they were supposed to disintegrate on impact with a hard surface which they did not.
I have these and Liberty civil defense alternated in my LCP Max. one for penetration and the other for fragmentation. they both cycle well and keeps my MAX nice and light. I know people say alternating rounds could be used against me if I go to court but if I have to use my gun for self defense then I am trying to save my life and worry about the rest later.
Tools&Targets here’s my follow up statement. I asked you about the Ballistics Dummy Labs zombie torso on whether it’s worth it or not and you said it’s not. Well I also forgot to mention it that I’ve never tested ammunition on ballistics gel. So I figured I’d test something like one of those with my saved up money for entertainment mostly to see what the bullets do to an armored target vs without. I don’t really want to buy a regular block of gel because I’m not really interested in doing that since it’s labor intensive and because I have you to watch free of charge.
I personally wouldn't do it unless it was for an established channel. That is a whole lot of money to spend on something just for fun shooting. I would probably try to set the armor up with something like a watermelon on the inside.
@@Steve-ev6vxI’m still debating whether I really should or not. It’s basically the equivalent of lining up $3,200 in $100 bills in a row and shooting it.
I guess like you said, good choice for 380 it seems to not recoil very much, which is always welcome in a tiny gun.I’ve tried the NOVX 65 gr 9mm,but had no gell or anything too see how they actually work other than they feed, shot fine with less recoil..
Great testing again brother ! I’d stick to an HST or Gold dot in 380 (or FMJ ! ). Or better yet a S&W 340 PD with 135 Gold dot +P 38 or short barrel .357 of the same load if you can find it !
Hey Tools hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I got me one of them 380 from Walther and love it. But the capacity was 9, so when I saw a Ruger security I jumped on it like a raging bull. I love the 15 rounds and the price was nice. Just found my 300 block out Pistol for Christmas for $379. Will behave and wait until Christmas to shoot it lol. Keep doing what you do, I know I appreciate it.
I'm 100% against "composite" type bullets. I know these might be different than some "frangible" rounds I bought during COVID, but similar enough to scare me with thoughts of cracked bullets and squibs
If it chips and deforms that badly over a piece of a petal from another bullet, kinda makes you wonder what's going to happen when it hits hard bone such as the ribs or sternum.
Norma NXD has what they call a "copper matrix" projectile that is 52 grains in 380, they look a lot like these. I have not done any testing except making sure my Bodyguard 2.0 ran it. 🤷♂
Crumbly bullets are maybe not a good idea they could jam up an action real good if they come apart in the gun. Im biased however. I like heavy lead. Thanks for the show. Interesting demo.
Glad you keep testing different ammo. You're right about this type of ammo tumbling which is nondeterministic in performance. It's good when it does and failure when it doesn't . I'll pass on this ammo.
Thanks for the video I do like the solid copper fluted specially the extreme defender in 380 but I’m not too sure about this one. Maybe if it’s all I had left sure of course.
I run the Underwood Xtreme Defender +P+ in most of my smaller CCW guns...I like the barrier blind performance. I think the Lehigh bullets perform better than the ARX, but that is only based on testing I have watched. I don't have the means to do my own testing.
I carry the +p Underwood Xtreme Defenders in my 380's and my 9's... mostly based on your testing. Hey, you should try some frangable ammo versus the jelly in different calibers... See if it is a viable option for self-defense. I know from personal experience that in 40 S&W it's bad medicine for large feral canines in the barn lot.
I know you have done a test of the corbon dpx rounds in 9mm and .40 S&W. If you could, please test the dpx round in .357sig. I got a good deal on some recently, i edc .357sig and im curious on the performance of this ammo. Thanks for all your hard work, have a wonderful day my friend.
I know you tested most sig sauer v crowns but I was wondering if you could test the 147gr 9mm sig sauer v-crown hollow points. I’m very curious of their performance. Thank you and keep up the amazing content!
Tools - thanks for the test! Pretty impressive that the bullets being composite hold up so well. No idea if they're cheaper to produce that cast lead, but would be interested to see some wadcutters made of this stuff.
Interesting. Still not convinced to give up an HST or Critical Duty for these types. Interesting. Thank you for the cool test. Wonder if they chip if they hit bone. More curious if chipped from a bone strike, how much more tumbling would occur. Just a thought.
I'm going to get me a BG 2.0 just because they are a cool looking little gun. Sure, I'll shoot it for fun, but it won't be a full-on carry gun... Unless, of course, I happen to find a positive locking necklace or keychain holster that covers the trigger guard. 😊
Not sure if it's something you would test or not. But been wanting to see someone test a product called Gun Juice. It's a blue liquid you put into the barrel and the company claims it will increase barrel velocity by 8%-18%. Making your gun more accurate and bullet speed faster. Just would be interesting to see a shot comparison with a chronograph. To find out if it's just a gimmick product.
The 380 ACP may be a good choice for someone living in an apartment or a condo. The liability is extremely high in case of a misplaced shot. Your neighbors are only a wall away. These bullets may shatter when penetrating a wall. I wouldn't want to count on it, but it's safer than a solid fmj.
I used to use that cartridge for in home defense. I thought they were less likely to go through multiple walls and hit an innocent person. I’ve replaced them with civil defense since they don’t pass very far beyond their first contact point.
I was rootin' for the underdog, but alas, 9mm wins again... 🤦♂️🤔😆 A little disappointed that the second box of 9mm ran 100ish fps less than the first. Makes you wonder about what kind of consistency you'll get from box to box or lot to lot. Interesting test! 💥👍💥
Do you think just regular FMJ would be better? I’m not sure about these fluted solid rounds,I’ve bought some the work fine in my pistols, and have much softer recoil. Just not sure there any better in gell/bad guys vs FMJ?
I mean they seem to do the job, but at 56 and 65 grain, are they that much more effective than the standard weights that are probably cheaper and most likely easier to find......unless youre shopping for them online............🤔
I don't have those but I did pickup a "duster" round from Remington - a 155gr frangible in 45acp. Real curious how it may perform. I thought the round that hit the petal would fragment more. Never know 😱. Appreciate the info. 👍🙏🇺🇲
@ToolsandTargets Copper petals aren't half as bad to filter out as copper/plastic dust. The Remington RHT45acp round looks more copper than plastic but "if" it hits over 1200fps will it matter what mix it is? 😂💥👍
Just too light for caliber for my taste. Even though they did pretty well. Hitting that little piece of jacket chipped a chunk off makes me wonder if it would just explode hitting a rib or something? Great test as always good sir 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
I carry both .380 and 9mm. I use Inceptor ARX in both. You just tested my EDC. Thank you!

You've had the radar chrono for a while now...now you gotta get a Kronos high speed camera!
I used to use that cartridge for in home defense. I thought they were less likely to go through multiple walls and hit an innocent person. I’ve replaced them with civil defense since they don’t pass very far beyond their first contact point.
I was rootin' for the underdog, but alas, 9mm wins again... 🤦♂️🤔😆
A little disappointed that the second box of 9mm ran 100ish fps less than the first.
I run the NovX rounds that use the ARX bullet....
Been looking to see what your results was on the p322 sig. Did you get the barrel straightened out
380 will not compete with a 9 but they're getting better.
I saw some similar bullets in .50 I started to get for the beowulf. I think they were just polymer though
🤔
If they were on sale half off I might some up for target only my HST and extreme penetrater in my spare mag aren't going anywhere
I mean they seem to do the job, but at 56 and 65 grain, are they that much more effective than the standard weights that are probably cheaper and most likely easier to find......unless youre shopping for them online............🤔
Interesting. I'm thinking the plastic is the bonding agent kind of like glue is in particle board?
Would make sense.
I wonder if the Ruger loads of the ARX would do better. At least for the 380.
I don't have those but I did pickup a "duster" round from Remington - a 155gr frangible in 45acp. Real curious how it may perform. I thought the round that hit the petal would fragment more. Never know 😱. Appreciate the info. 👍🙏🇺🇲
I was glad it didn't make more mess for me to clean up in the gel.😂
@ToolsandTargets Copper petals aren't half as bad to filter out as copper/plastic dust. The Remington RHT45acp round looks more copper than plastic but "if" it hits over 1200fps will it matter what mix it is? 😂💥👍
These are great for home defense or self defense I'm sure these are made to not over penetrate or break up if they hit something other than flesh.
😎👊
A bad guy stopper? Well, I did have a rampaging rat the other day...
💥🐭💥
Is there any chance the plastic resin could melt and deposit inside the barrel?
Ive got a few rounds to send your way for testing. Only had 1 box and cant find more, so might as well put some into jelly for a video.
I imagine it’d fragment violently if it hit bone ?
It did seem to chip apart pretty easy by grazing that copper petal.
Just too light for caliber for my taste. Even though they did pretty well. Hitting that little piece of jacket chipped a chunk off makes me wonder if it would just explode hitting a rib or something? Great test as always good sir 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Yeah, that tiny little piece of copper sure broke off a good sized chunk.
Would be interested to see these with a harder layer added to the heavy clothing. 1/4 inch plywood maybe?
😎👊
ARX or Underwood? I currently have both because I couldn’t make up my mind and want to see which gives me less feed issues
I'd probably say Underwood.
Another good ammo test
