I'm going to post this before watching. I just bought 400 rounds of 165 grain .40 HST. It better do well in your jelly tests. I really hope it does. It's my favorite weight in short barreled .40s. Fingers crossed. On to the video. Thank goodness. It's not smelly, it crushed the jelly. 165 for the win.
The 165 HST is my favorite HD/SD 40s&w round it's what I carry in my CCW G22. Through a full size pistol & in the right hands that bullet weight 40s&w is a force to be reckoned with. It's fast like lightning & hits hard like thunder.
@@PassivePortfolios - We been hearing and reading that 10mm is gaining popularity since it debuted. The problem is that never has and never will manifest. It's a niche caliber and will remain so. One of those niches being bench racers 😆.
That's some good stuff. Your testing vids are the "go to" source anytime I'm looking to buy defense ammo. After watching multiple tests of various .40S&W ammo, it becomes pretty clear the "experts" out there who claim the .40 is obsolete are ill informed.

My old department used to tote .40s and our issue ammo was the 165gr HST. I still have a bunch of it (retirement gift, LOL) and that's what I run in my .40s big and small. From a SIG 226 to a Kahr PM40 (out that tiny Kahr I got 16" of penetration and full, beautiful expansion through light clothing - 2 layers of cotton t-shirt - at a ballistics seminar our local FBI put on. Dude with a Glock 22 with a custom 6" barrel got exactly the same (he might have been using 180gr HST, I don't remember). I have come to really like the .40 S&W as a great round for self-defense.
Tools usually uses a G23 or along with the G27 for these tests. I’m sure you can watch some of his previous.40 videos. I will say again and again Tools jelly time is the reason I have a G27 and use it as my EDC. These results are just devastating!!
Thanks for the 40 S&W test. The Federal 165 HST is the best round for the caliber. It always expands and the energy is great from a G27. Winchester Defender 165 is a close second. The 180's just don't have enough velocity out of a shorter barrel to reliably expand. A 9mm just doesn't compare. Besides Ft/lbs of energy most don't look at momentum when evaluating stopping power but we should.

HST always a solid choice. Same with Gold Dot or Hornady. But I quit messing with those and head straight to Underwood Xtreme Defender. Velocity, barrier blind, tons of energy. Get out the way bad hombres. 😂
Yes please redo the 180 gr test. From what I remember you didn't put the clothing, also it was tested against 9mm. I'd like to see you use both barrel lengths you got
Awesome test Tools! This is why I keep carrying my G27. I use 165 gr HST's as well. I think you got a hair more expansion then I got in my gelatin. I believe I got .71. I've only had one encounter with their customer service and wasn't very impressed. Back to what I was gonna say. The G27 and P365 are what I'm carrying 95% of the time. Both are loaded with HST's.
Thanks for a much needed test. I find it unbelievable that LE and ordinary shooters think the 9mm is a better choice when compared to bullets like these they fall short. With a little weight lifting and hand gripping exercises anyone can manage the 40S&W's recoil.
Good stuff. Honestly, HST rarely makes me wonder. 155 Speer Gold Dot is my preferred as it's designed for 1250fps from a 4.5" However, they don't make it anymore. At the 1250fps, it matches 357 Magnum 158gr loads from a 4" for energy. Nice review as always.

You just can't ask for much better than that in my opinion. I have one .40 that I do carry at times but it's been my woods and river sidearm. General utility for whatever nature throws at me. That there might just be my new go to round. Better penetration than what I expected. Thanks for the great content.
Either HST or Gold Dot in 165 are my 1st choice. Either HST or GD in 180 are my 2nd. Actually 357 Sig or 9mm is my first choice but that's another thing. Also in HST or GD.
Would love to see Federal do the 155 HST the 165 the 180 and the 200 for 10mm I know the 200 is way under velocity for 10 mm but maybe they could really spice up that 155 that 165 and the 180 I mean it's a 40 caliber bullet why can't they load it in 10 mm I'm really spice it up

Yes Sir! Great results. I have been carrying 165s over 180s for a good # of years. I have Gold Dots in now. I picked up the HST 165 recently when I rotate. This is very encouraging. My daughter is carrying 155 Gold Dots in her 3.6" M&P40. I carry a 4.25 M&P40. I will check & see if you have a vid with your G22. Huge thanks. Good show.
I’ve got a 4” 40sw and it doesn’t matter the weight with hst I’ve tested 165 180 and probably something else and at further distances those hsts just do what they are supposed to even if they don’t load them as hot as I would like the projectile just always performs like it’s supposed to Another great video I’m subscribed to many channels but your channel is one of few that I click on no matter what because it’s great information that you are putting out
I tried this 45acp 230gr jhp with a compact 2" barrel and got full expansion and penetration at 20' in gel. No cloth though. Was armscore, fairly cheap stuff.
Great test. I wonder how the test would go with a underwood Xtreme penetrators 140grain . With that monolithic projectile. I think would be very interesting. Thanks for another great video
And that ladies and germs is why I reverted to my trusty old ,40SW for daily carry and home defense and retired the only pistol I still own in 9 Minimal to the safe.
While the Underwood 155 grain 40SW is plenty powerful at 1300fps 582lbs the Underwood SIG 357 115 grain are 1550fps 614lbs so l guess close 30lbs difference the SIG 357 shines over 50 yards
I have a SIG P320 4.7 fullsize in 40SW with a SIG 357 barrel combo so I'm all about 40SW ammo that performs close to SIG 357 especially if it costs less than the expensive SIG 357 ammo does
Excellent text. HST rocks!!!!! I think it was a mistake to give up on the .40's like a lot of places did. One day, I might get one. I'm not a Glock or striker fan, so i will have to shop around when i am ready. I got HST +P in 230 in .45ACP and 124 9mm.
Love your vids , but why not just use a 4 inch for the test to see how it matches the box claims? 165 hst in 4 inch is my carry so maybe in just being selfish with the request haha
Wow. Your tests using the G27 the last few months are impressive. That would make an impressive EDC with either these HSTs or the Hornady Critical Defense. Great test, Tools! Thanks much and have another great week.
Thanks for your test. Whatever critter gets hit with either, ain't gonna know the difference. The 165 for sure out edges out over the 155 in the jelly though.
Thanks for giving us some 40 cal love big hoss. In HST, we trust. Can't go wrong with Federal hst or speer gold dot. Matter of fact that might be a great test.
Another great test. Hope to see a new updated test with the 180 grain HST soon! That’s the one I stockpiled lol. But have some 165 as well. I plan to finish setting up another edc in the next week. Another option in between the size/power of the G20 range and the little micro P365 Spectre Comp options. After getting a few hundred rounds through that Gen 4 G23C I picked up a while back, I’ll do the sights (Night Fision yellow up front with Glock metal 6.1mm night sight in back), extended factory slide stop/release, maybe an OW flat tac trigger kit (the one that uses the Glock factory trigger bar and minus connector with NP3 coating and I’d already had a spare tlr7 laying around that went on right away. No optic for this one. It shoots flat as any 9mm I have with all the various ammo so far, but with more thump on the target, as 40 tends to offer. It’s as accurate as I am and zero malfunctions so far as expected. Tested all sorts of target ammo, HST 180 and 165, Hornady Critical Duty and Defense, a few others, but not tried the Underwood Xtreme Defenders or Penetrators yet. Need to order another 9mm conversion barrel for this one and a 357sig. I think I’ll do another threaded one from KKM. They are not cut for the comp in the slide anymore but it doesn’t matter. Best that it’s not for the threaded barrel and a can anyway! It should make another great edc as well as spare SHTF bag gun package. 40 is definitely not dead, fills a size/power place right between 9mm and proper 10mm at 450-550 ft lbs and good capacity. No reason to let it fade away.
I am running the HST 135gr 40 S&W in my G23. I don't have a jelly contraption to test it on but I bet it performs similarly to your tests with maybe a little less penetration. I think 40 will stick around for a while. So many pistols in the civilian market will need feeding.
Remington HTP 180 grain is my winter carry round. I got around 15" plus 4 layers of old T-shirts & ripped up hoodie penetration in gel with my Glock22 with that round.
Thanks Tool Guy. Looks like I made the right choice. I've been loading up on the 165gr to se after I run out of the misc. 180gr I have now. Great test for me to see.
I was hoping you'd do this one first. I'm sitting on several boxes of the 165 HSTs from LEO myself, they shoot very nicely from my FNS 40. I've been carrying it with those for the past year now, and after seeing these results I'm happy I changed. Used to run the Hornady Critical Defense, but these things are just rippers!
Found and rewatched (again) the old test from a year ago. It was the 10 vs 40 HST video and did use the clothing barrier, and used the 180gr 40, but used only the G22 that time. Would be nice to see the results from the G23 since I don’t think you have a G23C handy. They should be similar. Maybe make it a comparison between the 165 vs 180gr HST using either the G22 and G27, or even add in the G23 and really make a mess out of the gel block lol. It’s a shame that +P isn’t used for 40 and 10. If we had the option of HST 180gr 40 in +P speed, and HST 200gr also in a +P speed (or really simply at least 150 fps faster)… that just might be the best of both and beat all their competition for ideal carry ammo in those two calibers. I understand why people get frustrated and just make their own loads. Maybe someone will pop some HST 10mm out of their cases and get it to the proper 1250 fps for you to test??? If so I’m betting absolutely perfect performance at that speed. And then Federal can pay you both for doing their job for them in R&D and offer the ammo the way it should be made! 💰🤔💭 lol
Great test, Brian! While I'm a fan of the 10mm, the 40, as much as I rag on it, is not bad at all with the right ammo! I'd say the 165 is a clear winner and is the weight I use for my back up ammo for the 10mm. I'll stick with my Lehigh, I'm not likely to ever give up on them. The back up ammo is the 165 Speer Gold Dot, a bullet that's as good, and maybe just a tad better, than the HST. Maybe. They both seem to be near perfect bullets. I've never seen a jacket/core seperation with the HST (unlike the XTP) so it's up there at near the top if the heap! I'd test them in my medium (water) if I could ever find some to buy! What I'd really like to see is the bullets for sale as loading components but I don't think they have ever offered them for sale. Oh well! Cheers, jc
I believe that is probably RMR bullets. I bought 500 pulled Winchester bullets, got a bunch of 165 & 180's and a couple of odd ball as well. The 165's don't seem to be able to hold up to real 10mm velocities, and I haven't tested the 180's yet. The 165's is what I was really interested in since the 165 Speer Gold Dots werent, and hadn't be available for a couple of years. I finally scored 400 of the Gold Dots from Midway but as far as I know they've dried up again! Oh well, I got mine and they're already loaded up! Cheers, jc

You just can't ask for much better than that in my opinion. I have one .40 that I do carry at times but it's been my woods and river sidearm. General utility for whatever nature throws at me. That there might just be my new go to round. Better penetration than what I expected. Thanks for the great content.
Perfect.😎👊
Either HST or Gold Dot in 165 are my 1st choice. Either HST or GD in 180 are my 2nd. Actually 357 Sig or 9mm is my first choice but that's another thing. Also in HST or GD.
Love that you give the .40 clout yes I carry 9 all the time but my night stand gun is a full size m&p chambered in forty
Would love to see Federal do the 155 HST the 165 the 180 and the 200 for 10mm I know the 200 is way under velocity for 10 mm but maybe they could really spice up that 155 that 165 and the 180 I mean it's a 40 caliber bullet why can't they load it in 10 mm I'm really spice it up
Cuz I could really focus on that personal defense self-defense 10mm with that 155 165 even the 180 hsts
Makes me wanna go back to carrying my 27, I do love it, and shoot it well. But like everybody else I went the hi-cap micro 9 route. I also have a duty size XDM .40, I love it too! Just too big to ccw, makes a great walkin around the woods gun though.
For many years the 125 grain 357 mag hollow point was the
#1 round for one shot stops. The 165 grain .40 S&W took
That title.
😂😂😂 no it didn't!!! Good try though!! Can you cite a reliable source of that information?
It all depends on the grain and powder.. But 357 will probably edge out .40 when it comes to the hottest loads
Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow
Wrote a study that covered
Twenty years of police shootings. It's pretty dated
Now but it is an interesting
Piece of research. Not sure
Any 10 gun guys will agree
On this one. The 125 grain
357 Magnum loading is always
In the top loads mentioned.

Good show.
Thank you sir.😎👊
I’ve got a 4” 40sw and it doesn’t matter the weight with hst I’ve tested 165 180 and probably something else and at further distances those hsts just do what they are supposed to even if they don’t load them as hot as I would like the projectile just always performs like it’s supposed to
Another great video I’m subscribed to many channels but your channel is one of few that I click on no matter what because it’s great information that you are putting out
Appreciate that, brother!😎👊
I tried this 45acp 230gr jhp with a compact 2" barrel and got full expansion and penetration at 20' in gel. No cloth though. Was armscore, fairly cheap stuff.
Federal HST in 40 S&W is my all-time favorite self-defense cartridge, although I carry the 180 grain, but these are looking really good as well 👍
The 180 has better follow ups less recoil.
@@hypervigilance1465 I've gotten enough practice with my 40 that my follow-up time and accuracy is pretty decent these days imo.
Great test. I wonder how the test would go with a underwood Xtreme penetrators 140grain . With that monolithic projectile. I think would be very interesting. Thanks for another great video
Thank you sir.😎👊
And that ladies and germs is why I reverted to my trusty old ,40SW for daily carry and home defense and retired the only pistol I still own in 9 Minimal to the safe.
9mm Ammo is cheap AF today
@@UncleFjester And there are several very good reasons for that low cost.
, yes, because 9mm is the most popular and most carried handgun caliber in the world, which is why it's manufactured in higher quantities.
Those two HST bullets expanded picture perfect. Thanks for the video.
😎👊
Dude you definitely influence what I buy
I appreciate your testing
Bad guys better stay away
Thank you sir
Nice. I carry a G23 Gen 4 with the 180 HST load. Your tests of the HST's are always great which is why I chose it.
😎👊
I have two carry pistols in .40 I love it. I have a bunch of the 180 HST, I'll have to find your old vid on that.
G27 is my EDC. I use Underwood 155 gr loads. They have near 357 Sig power without the LOUD bang of my G33.
While the Underwood 155 grain 40SW is plenty powerful at 1300fps 582lbs the Underwood SIG 357 115 grain are 1550fps 614lbs so l guess close 30lbs difference the SIG 357 shines over 50 yards
I have a SIG P320 4.7 fullsize in 40SW with a SIG 357 barrel combo so I'm all about 40SW ammo that performs close to SIG 357 especially if it costs less than the expensive SIG 357 ammo does
😎👊
Love G27. I enjoy the poor mans HST. 165 grain federal punch rounds.
I have never seen HST fail a test. I would like to find some HST in .38 Spl and see it tested out of a 2" snub.
What a beautiful flower!❤ Love the 40s and love your videos ! Thank you sir
😎👊
Excellent text. HST rocks!!!!! I think it was a mistake to give up on the .40's like a lot of places did. One day, I might get one. I'm not a Glock or striker fan, so i will have to shop around when i am ready. I got HST +P in 230 in .45ACP and 124 9mm.
Definitely buying some soon. Your channel is awesome man
My federal 165 grain FMJ shoot 1110 from my m& p 40 compact.
My favorite kind of flower 🌺 lol. Gold Dots are pretty as well 🌺. I had zero doubt these would work perfectly.
They hit a homerun with HST.
Thank you sir. You too!😎👊
Thanks for your test. Whatever critter gets hit with either, ain't gonna know the difference. The 165 for sure out edges out over the 155 in the jelly though.
That 165 grain is a beast! Can you give us a video tutorial as to how you re-melt your gel? Great looking re-melt!
Humidity been killing me😅. Thx for sharing 🎉🎉
👍😊🎯 shot my first 10mm today, I like it the recoil wasn’t bad but I was shooting my super Blackhawk so it wasn’t bad. 😊
Nice! Now you need some Buffalo Bore!💥🐃💥
Thanks for giving us some 40 cal love big hoss. In HST, we trust. Can't go wrong with Federal hst or speer gold dot. Matter of fact that might be a great test.
😎👊
Back in the day the 155 grain was popular amongst law enforcement. I personally think both of those are awesome.
That’s 165 my EDC in my Glock 23 and 27. It’s GlockyJelly time
I am running the HST 135gr 40 S&W in my G23. I don't have a jelly contraption to test it on but I bet it performs similarly to your tests with maybe a little less penetration. I think 40 will stick around for a while. So many pistols in the civilian market will need feeding.
Alternate the 180gr and the 165gr in my mags. Great test Brian!
Remington HTP 180 grain is my winter carry round. I got around 15" plus 4 layers of old T-shirts & ripped up hoodie penetration in gel with my Glock22 with that round.
Thank you sir.😎👊
I carry speer gold dot, hst, and hornady critical duty. Those are my favorite
Very impressive results Tools, if I had a S&W 40cal. I'd be getting the 165gr.🇺🇸👊
😎👊
HST and 40 smith great combination. Thanks for the video .
Very impressive! Have 9mm HST, definitely need to pick some up for my G27. Thanks for another jelly test Tools!
I use the Federals in 155fmj for Target practice and Nosler 150 GR JHP for defense carry.1110 MV.
Thanks Tool Guy. Looks like I made the right choice. I've been loading up on the 165gr to se after I run out of the misc. 180gr I have now. Great test for me to see.
Yessir. Fantastic performance.😎👍
You do a great job re-melting the jelly. I dunno if u buy a lot of the blocks.
Perfect performance.😎👊
Oh well!
Cheers,
jc
It is a shame you can't buy the bullets. I know there used to be some places that sold pulled HST's but no idea if they do anymore.
I finally scored 400 of the Gold Dots from Midway but as far as
I know they've dried up again! Oh well, I got mine and they're already loaded up!
Cheers,
jc
