Yeah, xbox seems a lot better about having prior gen games take advantage of the new generation hardware with first party games. But I think it still needs a developer to be fully committed to past gen games, that quite honestly a lot of developers have abandoned support on. So a lot of prior gen games are going to be locked at 30 or 60fps.

@@maxbrown9391 From what I understand the problem is the current gen versions in general. They probably pushed too hard to make it look slik on high end PC's and nextgen and judging on the gameplay footage did a great job at it. But... now have trouble optimizing it for the Xbox one and PS4. But also speculation of course : )
This is seriously impressive for a "patch". Exceeding PC settings and hitting 60fps at close to 4K. Even a high end PC struggles to do this, so it's kind of crazy for a $500 console to pull this off Imagine what they'll be able to do when game engines are developed natively for the hardware, especially once AI/ML upscaling is being utilised. I hope 1080p/120 and 1440p/60 with AI upscaling to 4K becomes the standard this generation. Native 4K is a huge waste.
Have you realised that gears 5 is the worst optimised game for pc? It's not that special if the xsx can beat a high pc based on this game's performance.
This looks great. As a PlayStation fan I would love for Microsoft to provide more games like that. But at the same time Xbox fans better shut up about dynamic 4K vs. native 4K when even a cross gen game has to go down to around 1440p to achieve that quality.
On both PS5 and XsX sides there are still loada of things to get done to use the potential of these HWs. Patching a game won't make as much use of the tech inside those boxes as games built from ground up. After I saw RDR2 running at Full Native 4k on the 1X, I highly doubt those machines won't be able to push graphics far beyond what we are currently seeing. We just need to have the proper expectations.
@@rjanuari1978 I don’t know where this constantly comes from. RDR2 is a pretty Game but at console settings native 4K wasn’t that difficult at 30fps. Why should we be wasting resources on meaningless resolution increases if we can set dynamic res to between 1440p and 1800p while still getting high graphics and 60fps.
@@marctech1996 I am not talking about resolution. I am talking about graphics. A good 1440p upscale with ML will look as good as 4k and will save loads of resources. I agree with you on that. My point is that RDR2 looks amazing on last gen machines. PS5 and XsX will produce awesome looking games for sure.
Ultra settings at 60fps with a dynamic resolution. This is what devs should be required to push as a minimum. 4k is a waste. Dynamic resolution at 60 with ultra settings will always better than 4k with reduced settings.
"Ultra settings" doesn't mean anything. It's an arbitrary setting from the developers that could look really good, or really bad. And it's worth noting that it's running ultra settings on a game that was primarily designed for low-spec hardware from 2013. Once we start seeing games built from the ground up for these new consoles, and PC hardware starts to move far beyond what they're capable of, we're gonna start seeing the same kinds of nips and tucks to the graphical featureset as we saw last gen.

Can we get clarification please? I have asked the same of Vincent Teoh and got this reply stating that Digital Foundry may not have noticed due to... '1) Panel variance; 2) Near-black gamma issues are significantly less visible in the presence of ambient light; 3) Individual sensitivity to such issues' Now that DF are aware of the issue, are they able to confirm how bad this looks please? Also I'd recommend setting your TV and Xbox to use freesync as it's way less buggy than standard VRR. Shame PS5 only supports standard VRR.
Exactly. It's the brilliant artistic direction when it comes to environments, character models, etc. that really showcases the capabilities of the engine. I'd say Gears 5 is Xbox's best looking game.
VRR is a great addition for next gen but I hope that developers don't rely on it too much to cover up missed frame rate targets as not everyone is going to have TVs/Monitors that support it.

Gears 5 already looked really great on the One X, and while it does look better on Series X, it doesn't look that dramatically different to me. I mean, if you zoom way in, sure, there's more detail there. But if you're just playing the game, I probably wouldn't be able to tell which version I was playing most of the time.
They didn’t redo the game of course it will look nearly identical they increased detail shadow framerate so it is more subtle. If you want a different game it will be gears 6 using all the new technologies
It will on a large 4k tv , the texture quality and lighting are streets ahead and it did drop to under 50 fps at times too on XBox one X. Still for what they had to work with it was great to have a game of this quality plus once they fix the couple of glitches , cutscenes at 60 fps is glorious compared to 30 too.
It isn't running at high texture they are using forced anisotropic filtering this thing has 1-2 fps penality and improves texture as u saw ,these consoles ain't that powerful all power it had went into providing 1720p visual instead and that reflection u see isn't ray traced either many pc games use this form of reflection which looks like ray tracing but it ain't

The Unreal Engine demo that came out a while back was "in-engine" as well. we won't see games coming close to looking like this until they stop making these games cross-gen. Me waiting for December when Digital Foundry reviews Tech of Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully that day will come soon.
IF cdpr decides to not delay furthermore
I predict another delay massive tumours they having problems with Xbox versions
@@maxbrown9391 From what I understand the problem is the current gen versions in general. They probably pushed too hard to make it look slik on high end PC's and nextgen and judging on the gameplay footage did a great job at it. But... now have trouble optimizing it for the Xbox one and PS4. But also speculation of course : )
@@florisbackx1744 Don´t pay attention he is a PS5 fanboy.

This is seriously impressive for a "patch". Exceeding PC settings and hitting 60fps at close to 4K. Even a high end PC struggles to do this, so it's kind of crazy for a $500 console to pull this off
Imagine what they'll be able to do when game engines are developed natively for the hardware, especially once AI/ML upscaling is being utilised. I hope 1080p/120 and 1440p/60 with AI upscaling to 4K becomes the standard this generation. Native 4K is a huge waste.
Can’t wait, the potential is there.

Marketing BS to sell the Xbox, and high end PCS dont struggle lol

No, it just means I(subjective, or opinion if you don’t know what subjective means) like forza more
I dont have time to read all posts but think of this, the settings is on Ultra and with some other added improvements. A PC with RTX 2070 running at Ultra 1440P runs this at a framerate as low as around 45fps without the improved graphics options. So its pretty impressive i would say staying close to 60fps with a resolution of 1080P-2160P on a 500$ hardware.
Vast majority of games will run better on PC w/ RTX 2070 without a doubt.
@@erickelly4107 We're talking Gears5 now havent seen much else on Series X. Can compare legion, Valhalla, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk etc later
Honestly, with all the talk about 12TF I was kind of expecting locked 4K60, not dynamic res with the occasional torn frame. It's just hard to get excited over these new consoles.
@@GOilers97 So basically Series X is not powerful enough to run a last gen game at 4K60 despite all the "most powerful console in the world ever" and "12 TF" claims? That is embarrassing. Not to mention the resolution fluctuates from 2160p to all the way down to just 1080p. So much for all those power claims.
Hard to get excited about Series x considering their MAIN selling point was running these older games native 4K60
@@asimmehmood8868 the series X is exactly the same gpu as the rx6800... A graphics card that by itself is over $500... I just don't think people who post shit like this know what they are talking about. I own an rtx2060super and i won't even bother with 4k because it's an absolute resource hog.
@@asimmehmood8868 it is a very powerful machine. Native 4k60 is very hard to achieve (especially on max settings), even considering newest pc hardware - you'll not even get it in all games with a 3080 or 3090. And those are both considerably more powerful than 2000series GPUs.
The problem is that the marketing is too enthusiastic, and the consumers underestimate the difficulty of native 4k60.
@@jakerain2820 To be honest, I dont care about 4K60fps but after MS boasting about the most powerful console and native 4K for 2 years, they need to back their words up with facts. If a last-gen game cant run at locked 4K60 on a Series X then you shouldnt have been boasting about power and native 4K to begin with.
Great work John. The improvements are superb and go further than just prettifying the game, the feel of the game is so important and finally the pc gameplay improvements are finally available on console.
I'm about to replay the campaign for the 4th time once series x comes out. So excited!!
Can't wait until they review the Xbox Series S.
Yea,since im gonna buy that
Are you getting the PS5 as well this generation.
@@aryannajib5691 no, stop asking
@@aryannajib5691 I don't think many will go with more than one console.
@@nischala7170 Me neither, especially in this era where the vast majority of games are multiplats anyway. Having a PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and a computer seems excessive. I'm getting a PS5, but I love a lot of Microsoft's games too. That said, I'd much rather borrow a friend's Xbox (sharing is caring) or wait until my next PC/laptop upgrade for a min spec computer to play those games not on PS5.
You guys should be doing a comparison with the PC ports too. Just so we fully understand if more effort is being placed on Xbox.
this channel deserves all the subs🤘good work and stay safe
I love the original gears trilogy, but man for me, I feel like the coalition just does it better. And I cannot wait to run through that campaign again updated. And of course play as Batista power bomb you.
Even the multiplayer is very good
@AnEn that’s good to know. I wanted to download gears 3 for nostalgia cause that multiplayer I also too had a great time on. I’ll try it out. Thanks for letting me know
What’s the resolution in multiplayer 120 FPS mode though?
1080
1080p bro
1080p lol
Really? Only 1080p? Well that’s kinda disappointing
@@yancgc5098 I heard it's also dynamic and it could go up to 2160p. But the quality is low or medium
Gears 5 looks nice and all. I can see the improvements that they have made to the game but it's still basically the PC build of an Xbox One game. I really haven't seen a single thing from either Sony or Microsoft that I would consider to be "next-gen". At best, we've just seen stuff that compares to what the PC builds of games are already doing. The stuff you guys have touched on with the PS5 controller does sound interesting, but when it comes to next-gen graphics and gameplay I haven't seen anything from Sony or Microsoft that has made me go "woah".
@Cryer24597 I have. A trailer rendered in-engine doesn't directly translate to a game looking or running like that. The Unreal Engine demo that came out a while back was "in-engine" as well. we won't see games coming close to looking like this until they stop making these games cross-gen. They have yet to leverage, much less master any of the features that make next-gen, "next-gen".
One week till I get mine 🤪. Great video DF, you got me hyped.
They forgot to mention there's Story DLC coming for it. Super exciting.
Play it again
they did mention it.
Yeah should be considered as a next gen game, just like Spiderman on the ps5.
@@ryannelson4317 Good point
I used to love gears then gears 4 made me fall out of love with it im sat here at 4 am cant sleep downloading gear5 for series x so hopefully i enjoy it
Did you enjoyed it?
Great video as always guys! Small suggestion, but could you put the newer box on the right side and the older on the left. I think that makes more sense like a before and after.
Amazing. Looks like I'll finally play through the game on my Series X.
Once any left-over hiccups are fixed, I for one would love to see The Coallition go back to previous Gears titles & add some of these visual improvements to the older games.
Another solid breakdown. Can’t wait to get my series X.
I'm playing gears ultimate for gears 1 - 3 so I can play gears 4 and 5 on series X. This looks really good 👍
So am I (except I have never played them before).
A quick question, does the actual gameplay 'evolve' after the 1st game? I know it is pretty Old School... Just curious, since even factoring that in, it can be frustrating / shows its age.
I played it one year ago on max settigns 1440p at 55 fps average on my monster pc RYZEN 7 1700 16 GB DDR4 3200MHZCL15 GTX 970 G1 GAMING DELLP2416D 24'' 2560X1440 60 HZ IPS. Graphics look almost like real. What will difference be if i get a better graphics to allow it to run at 120 fps?
@@TheMonkeyBloke bro I'm in the same boat lol, I never got into gears during 360 and one days 😅
@@ykojbon484 Oh ok 😂 That makes two of us then! I still want to know though.
Just bought this game at my local Walmart for $5.60CAD back at the end of August.
Great video! The visual improvements make me curious about the Forza Horizon 4 optimized version, but I'd also like to know if AC Odyssey got any improvements on Series X, because I'm planning to play it on the Series X.
@shantanu rajput That's not. Series X GPU is a way ahead of 2060 by any means (it's almost two times better, actually). Check the specs.
@shantanu rajput it's nothing about being fanboy. I hate this behaviour. It's just about you being wrong. PC gaming always would be the best way to play, but I just don't like playing this way, you know. Console gaming has its own flaws like paid multiplayer and another stuff. But hardware itself is cheaper, because console really seems cheaper than a comparable videocard. Sure, it's better to have a high end PC, but not everybody can afford this
@shantanu rajput in fact, you have only 6.5 teraflops performance on rtx 2060 against 12 teraflops on Series X. But who need specs, right? It's better to accuse people being fanboys and daydreaming
@shantanu rajput fanboys you fanboys you fanboys. I have heard you. Nothing to talk about
@shantanu rajput Man you're stupid af. You literally don't know anything about the console specs lmao
genuinely the most useful channel
Father who started the console was most bias useless channel.
Visual updates as in graphic sliders that are in PC games have been adjusted for the new consoles. WOOOOO. Who still expects 4k native with 60 fps?
When my Series X arrives i will start with gears 1 for the first time :)
im pumped for gears 4 and 5 ^^ great looking games
From what i saw Gears Ultimate edition is now 4k 60 as well on Series X? . That never received an update for Xbox one X but i am sure i read it has been enhanced now by Xbox division.
@@DEVILTAZ35 GoW is amazing
Very excited to play this again on Series X. Just did a solo run of 50 waves on horde mode. Wanted to test keyboard and mouse. Hopefully latency is also decreased there.
This looks honestly great. The quality was already extremely good on X and now it looks even better on SX. The 1080p 120Hz is amazing news. Loading times are also quite impressive.
From a Playstation gamer, I hope to see more games with these kind of options for high framerate and also updated assets. And well, loading times being a thing of the past, thank God for that.
4k at 120 now
If this was a Sony game , then many of the comments would have been likely saying how it’s not native 4K and would have not talked about the game looking good regardless of that
