It's fun to reminisce, but not even really a question. Gears 1 was one of the great innovators of cover based third person shooters and gears 2 and 3 are among my all time favorites. I even enjoyed judgement, even though some people gave it a lot of crap.
Same, glad they at least ditched those garbage sequels for the time being. I personally don't care about what happens next. Always made more sense to make prequels. So many untold stories.
People seem to have forgotten how revolutionary Gears or War was. The graphics were the best of its time. The 3rd person control set a new standard. The multiplayer was amazing. And oh my god… that first Berserker was absolute nightmare fuel. Every gamer was rightfully talking about this amazing game.

That 512MB meant the Xbox 360 could support party chat, whereas the PS3 at 256MB couldn't. If it wasn't for Epic Games and GOW1 we wouldn't have had that feature. Gears was also one of the first to introduce Horde mode. These days it is an iconic feature for some many games.
True point, however, party chat didn't exist until the NXE update in 2008. There was however a private chat you could use, but I believe it only worked for 1 on 1 conversations. Gamestation, Lincoln UK. September 2011. I bought Gears 3 on my first and only ever midnight launch for a game. I bought the game and the red controller. What a night!
i was a senior in high school when Gears 1 came out. I remember my friends and i talking about it. We were all blown away by how insane the graphics were. It's definitly aged but its cool to go back and think man, these were cutting edge back then. Still not a bad looking game though even these days.
When Gears 1 came out I was working 3rd shift and I was 19. All I did was play that game until I had to sleep for work. I was constantly in the top 100 for the war zone mode. I would anger people so badly because I would frag tag people and alway seem to get away. People hated it and it just made me do it more. I loved that game and the multi-player modes too.
Gears of war 3 is the only game that I ever picked up at a midnight release. I played it all night with my best friend and brother into the early morning hours and even called off of work the following day to continue playing. We all did. My best friend, brother and I played out the story and the Dom moment still sticks with me. We were all quiet and took a little break after that moment. It is the only video game to ever make me tear up, that moment hit hard. My best friend passed away on Feb 29,2020. I put my copy of gears 3 in his casket and have not played that game since. RIP Llama, I miss you brother.
I have a special place in my heart for Gears. We finally got good enough internet to play online - came home from school, created my Xbox Live profile and joined my friends online for Gears 2. My first ever online game. A splendid time was had, particularly with horde and campaign co-op. Staying up until dawn trying to finish it on the hardest difficulty in one sitting. Amazing times.

Gears jugment isn’t as bad as ppl say PSA. Great ideas for innovating the franchise just not the best execution. Story was decent . And “declassifying” missions for added challenge was really cool also
Agree. I just hated they got rid of classic Gears controls for a more Cod-style oriented movement set, but beside that, it had great ideas such as declassified missions and the enemy dynamic respawn system. Also, it was the graphic peak of the time.
Gears of War is my fathers most favourite game series. He has played it in coop with my sister, my brother, me and my partner. He playes the games nearly every year again. Everytime i see content of gears of war, i think of my father. ❤
Other awesome 360 trilogies in addition to Gears, the Mass Effect trilogy, the AC Ezio trilogy, and the BioShock trilogy, 2000 to 2015 was the best era for creative & quality gaming in general.
I recently, like a week ago, came back to these games. It had been years since I played. I honestly forgot about Gears totally….but I saw the trailer, and everything came back…all the memories of horde mode with the homies, slugging through the campaigns, the first time I chainsawed a locust(dad loved that shit). Gears 1-3 are still fan-fuckin-tastic!
7:00 Many games from that era get criticized for being brown and grey and looking the same but I don't think Gears deserves that criticism, the lack of colors in Gears of War perfectly fit the setting and tone of the game. I actually think modern games might have the opposite problem now, it feels like almost every game is very colorful and vibrant now and they all look the same.
I definitely agree about the greatness of the 360 era and the Gears franchise! And coincidentally I recently replayed through All of the Gears campaigns for the first time in several years, And surprisingly Judgment has aged very well, and the campaign seemed much better than I remembered, and Gears 5 definitely has the worst campaign COMPARATIVELY.
Gears gave me some great memories, less so the games though I enjoyed them a lot & more playing it with friends or going to midnight launch events. I specifically remember Gears 2 launch as I brought a monitor & my 360 to play 1v1 multiplayer in split-screen with everyone while we waited in a tournament style. I also did a 24 hour stream of Gears 3 horde mode for charity with 3 friends & had a Burmak teleport behind us at one point because it glitched after getting stuck.
Gears was the main reason I bought a 360 and has been the only reason I bought the xbox one and the series x. The story is good, horde us fantastic and the multi-player was always a blast and I still play gears 5 periodically. Awesome series
Yes, yes they were. I replayed each of the original trilogy three times over the last four years with my girlfriend. They were just as good now as they were when I originally played them on the 360. The games were technically amazing, the visuals were incredible and it was the only real series which nailed 3rd person shooting at the time. It was soo good that Bioware just straight up copied it for Mass Effect 2 and 3. Gnasher battles online were just awesome.
Gears is one of the best series in gaming. And the Xbox360 (and PS3) generation was the best generation. I don't think any other generation has had so many games, not to mention complete series, that went on to be legendary, beloved pieces of gaming history. The 360 generation is to gaming what the 80s is to general pop culture. It's that era that will live on forever in our hearts and culture will never fully move on from because it just has that much hold on all of us.
Ima Gears of War vet been in love with the franchise since day one and I've gotten my friend who has never played a Gears of War game ever to play through it and we're doing it CO OP and my God. The Nostalgia I get whilst he is experiencing it for the first time, is just a weird feeling and his "grenade everything" mentality taught me something new I never even considered to do ever in Gears of War 1, during the encounter with the Beserker to toss grenades at the doors. I spent years, bloody years using the Beserker to break the doors down and my homie comes along and blows up a door with grenades accidently. I was flabbergasted and was constantly tripping over my words by that revelation almost two decades later, wish I had known that back in '06.... Would have helped a lot back then on Insane difficulty... I was ashamed of myself for not finding that out sooner LMAO!
Gears of war was such a special franchise to me growing up. attempting to explain how amazing the xbox 360 and this trilogy was will never do it justice. You just had to be there.
I personally think that you should do retrospectives on games that aren't releasing new sequels, too. There some really cool games that need some spotlight, too. Dark cloud, the OG god of wars, the full metal alchemist games, the budokai games, tenkaichi games, etc.
Saying up all night with my brother and cousin playing hord mode. Starting at 8pm and getting off at 5am. That time created a lot of good memories together
Gears was freaking awesome. That first game with the Xbox 360 kept me and my best friend occupied for a LONG time. We used to blaze up and beat the campaign on co-op mode over and over again.
You didn’t mention how resident evil 4 and killswitch were huge influences on gears of wars shooting and cover mechanics. Re4 defined the 3rd person over the shoulder mechanic that helped shape gears into a great shooter.
Superb video. Gears 1 is my personal favourite - it just pulls you along at breakneck pace through it's campaign, and you never know what is around the corner.
Although most people preferred Halo I wanted to be edgy and go with the game that had a gun with a chainsaw attached to it, and that choice single handily kept me on Xbox most of my life. And with E-Day in the works I’m thinking about getting a Xbox again just to see one of my favorite gaming duos again.
Gears 1 has a special place in my heart, when it came out my uncle was deployed in Iraq and for some reason they couldn’t call home, but they could play gears multiplayer when they were at base, some of my favorite memories was being one of those cracked kids absolutely demolishing some army infantry guys and them getting so mad but absolutely loving it, later I found out they had bets going on who could kill me with like mres and shit 😂
Glad Gears is getting the proper love & respect it deserves again. Even the worst Gears game is at least "very good." I know people didn't like moving to Kait, but I still had a lot of fun with Gears 5. It's been said many times, but just look how well Gears 5 holds up today. The Coalition "magic" is real.
Great video, the original Gears Of War trilogy will always hold a special place. Still have my original CIB games bought back in the day and will never get rid of them. Gears of War 6 looks great and I hope it plays like these first 3 classics.
It's crazy I played Gears 1 & 2 first time in my life two years ago and they still blew me away. Gears 2 had so many incredible set pieces and vehicle based levels. The mine carts in Gears 1 + level moving light source to light source also stood out I think about them more than most modern games and can't wait to finish Gears 3 soon.
Gears of war was the only reason why I bought a Xbox one x , to play the series. Along with Ryse Son Of Rome. I held back from a Xbox system for years and years , than finally bought a system and the entire Gears series. I have nothing against Xbox , it’s just the exclusive titles from Sony kept my interest more and still does. I know Xbox can make serious bank on exclusive titles, just strange Sony pop them out like nothing and Xbox takes forever and ever for theirs.
Another thing that isn't mentioned nearly as often as it should, is that GoW was one of the first games to actually have great diversity of races with an absolute lack of bad stereotypes. Here in Mexico (and the rest of Latin America) it was an absolute hit from the start because we could identify with the whole cast, plus we actually got an absolutely fantastic dub, too.
Gears of War isn't good, it's bloody brilliant. While I'll defend Gears 4 and 5 to the death, we owe it to the 360 era for introducing this series, and yes, that includes Judgement. Gears of War revolutionised third person shooters with its emphasis on strategy and the use of the cover system. The series would also inspire similar gameplay in other games, like Uncharted, Mass Effect, and Dark Void. With E-Day on the way, the series doesn't seem to be slowing down, though I still hope for Gears 6
I really miss the old school manuals with games, I used to spend so much time just going through them, it added so much more to the disc versions of them
So true about co-op, especially couch co-op, not being prevalent in today’s games. Got so many great memories of my brother and I playing through campaigns co-op together where now they expect each kid to have their own console and games… so sad
I still remember playing gears of war for the first time. That was the first game from that generation that looked next gen. I thought graphics wouldn’t get any better after that lol.
The answer is yes. The original trilogy, had a phenomenal development team that brought full games with great campaigns, awesome multiplayer and innovative third modes (horde). In my opinion Gears 1, 2 and 3 are up there with the likes of Mass Effect and I know the game is linear shooter but it was so well written. And Gears 3 Multiplayer? OMG - fucking awesome. Judgement and the new trilogy (even though it's in progress) dont quite hit that same itch that the original did. These games each have their own issues also but overall a step back. With that said. Super excited for E-Day.
my favorite game ever is GOW3, i remember getting it at Midnight release (remember those?) and was blown away by it, it was a real addiction playing Horde and leveling up in the Ranks. "Trenches" was an incredible map when that loud horn would blast and the sandstorm came!🥺 i agree the 360 and ps3 era was the best time
This trilogy was my entry to online multiplayer and what a time we had man the 360 was such a good console, what happened, we havent hit that peak since!
the first 3 games is a cohesive story with compelling and well developped characters and the universe is awesome. IMO the first 3 games are among the best trilogy in gaming.
I’m still hoping that Microsoft makes an MCC-style compilation of the old Gears of War games for PC. So far I’ve only played the original (which has either an old GfWL-shackled port, or the horribly-optimized Ultimate Edition) and Gears 4 (main story was kinda cringe but that game had a stupidly-good PC port, even by today’s standards). I know I could also emulate them on Xenia, but Xenia’s still pretty early in development, plus I’m usually more motivated to play through a native port than just emulating something

The Ezio assassins creed trilogy is another one that we got in the life cycle of the Xbox 360
Ubisoft managed 8 Assassin's Creed during 7th gen consoles, 6 of which were AAA games.
20:28 if you get it, you get it🤣
20:33 did my guy just call The magnanimous Augustus Cole A-Train?
The timing of this video was impeccable given that Gears of War: E-Day was announced yesterday.
*Chefs kiss*
That menu music @ 0:29 still gets me
Ima Gears of War vet been in love with the franchise since day one and I've gotten my friend who has never played a Gears of War game ever to play through it and we're doing it CO OP and my God.
You just had to be there.
so true
You did not call Cole Train, A-Train 🤣🤣🤣
I personally think that you should do retrospectives on games that aren't releasing new sequels, too.
There some really cool games that need some spotlight, too. Dark cloud, the OG god of wars, the full metal alchemist games, the budokai games, tenkaichi games, etc.
Man dark cloud was fun nvr got to finish it or play the 2nd one need to do it one day
God of War and tenkaichi are getting sequels though?
@atomickaiser1934 the OG trilogy from the ps2 era is what I mean.
Saying up all night with my brother and cousin playing hord mode. Starting at 8pm and getting off at 5am. That time created a lot of good memories together
I definitely want to start playing this
its my fav game series
Those online chainsaw massacres , the sound of the headshots, those was the days , gears blew my teenage mind 🤩
I hope once E Day is out and if successful enough a trilogy remaster is released.
As a new fan of the Gears of War franchise yeah it is great.
Gears 3 multiplayer was heaven
And with E-Day in the works I’m thinking about getting a Xbox again just to see one of my favorite gaming duos again.
i was a child playing gears 3 on the xbox 360, i am now 19, i still play them to this day.
Even the worst Gears game is at least "very good."
I know people didn't like moving to Kait, but I still had a lot of fun with Gears 5. It's been said many times, but just look how well Gears 5 holds up today. The Coalition "magic" is real.
I met my best friend through Halo Reach but it was Gears that bonded us as Brothers 🤜🤛
good comment!
The mine carts in Gears 1 + level moving light source to light source also stood out
I think about them more than most modern games and can't wait to finish Gears 3 soon.
I know Xbox can make serious bank on exclusive titles, just strange Sony pop them out like nothing and Xbox takes forever and ever for theirs.
the ODST music in the background while looking at the physical Gears boxes.. nostalgia hitting me like a brick right now
Another thing that isn't mentioned nearly as often as it should, is that GoW was one of the first games to actually have great diversity of races with an absolute lack of bad stereotypes.
I really miss the old school manuals with games, I used to spend so much time just going through them, it added so much more to the disc versions of them
GOW2 has the best campaign in the series and GOW3’s multiplayer is still one of the best online experiences I’ve ever had.
Gears 5 is amazing too. Ive beat the game 4 times. Ive beat 1-3 probably 6 or 7 times. Will be playing them again before E day comes out.
i agree
Ha, nice try
A lot of people don't like 5 but I thought 5 played smoother than any of the prior games movement wise.
how did i go this long w/o knowing matty had another channel?
subbed
I'm grateful to you for make this videos you always been honest person you tell the truth all of the time 👏 🙌
The tone of Gears of War: E-Day feels like a return to form and I couldn't be more excited.
Hey Retro Rebond could you do a retrospective on Army of TWO? I don't think you have done that series but I would love it if you did
Gears of War 2 had the best video game speech in history.
I once put those Gears 3 stickers on my school planner.
I made a Gears of War video too and posted the same day you did, thats crazy timing lol! Great job, love your content.
7:53 bro you killed dom hahah
the first 3 games is a cohesive story with compelling and well developped characters and the universe is awesome. IMO the first 3 games are among the best trilogy in gaming.
Cliff Blizenski called Gears visuals and environments "destroyed beauty" . Absolutely fitting description imho.
A-Train? =(
Its the COLE TRAIN BABY
Why is their still not a Phoenix Collection on pc ? :(
imma have to redownload my gears games and play them through before E-DAY comes out…love the video btw
