Yes, yes it is. I don't know the person experiencing it for the first time, but when I played the game in the 2000's it meant alot. The campaign was amazing, the co-op excellent, and multiplayer was so competitive. Such an iconic game and series. Don't even get me started on Horde mode Edit: you can play most Gears game on 60 fps on Xbox by going into game details
When Gears 1 came out I was working 3rd shift and I was 19. All I did was play that game until I had to sleep for work. I was constantly in the top 100 for the war zone mode. I would anger people so badly because I would frag tag people and alway seem to get away. People hated it and it just made me do it more. I loved that game and the multi-player modes too.
I have a special place in my heart for Gears. We finally got good enough internet to play online - came home from school, created my Xbox Live profile and joined my friends online for Gears 2. My first ever online game. A splendid time was had, particularly with horde and campaign co-op. Staying up until dawn trying to finish it on the hardest difficulty in one sitting. Amazing times.
GOW trilogy is pure simple gaming joy. Not everything needs to be a 50 hour RPG. I love those short 10 hour epic action packed campaigns. And the characters and story were sneaky good as well. It just rules.
Gears was the main reason I bought a 360 and has been the only reason I bought the xbox one and the series x. The story is good, horde us fantastic and the multi-player was always a blast and I still play gears 5 periodically. Awesome series
Gears of war 3 is the only game that I ever picked up at a midnight release. I played it all night with my best friend and brother into the early morning hours and even called off of work the following day to continue playing. We all did. My best friend, brother and I played out the story and the Dom moment still sticks with me. We were all quiet and took a little break after that moment. It is the only video game to ever make me tear up, that moment hit hard. My best friend passed away on Feb 29,2020. I put my copy of gears 3 in his casket and have not played that game since. RIP Llama, I miss you brother.
The GOW2 theme music gives me huge nostalgia. Reminds me of being a kid living at my mums house. I remember one particular day I was poorly and had a sick day off school, spent the whole day in bed playing GOW2 campaign and can still remember my mum bringing me tomato soup with warm buttered crusty bread up to my room that day. Very happy memories indeed.
Gears jugment isn’t as bad as ppl say PSA. Great ideas for innovating the franchise just not the best execution. Story was decent . And “declassifying” missions for added challenge was really cool also
Agree. I just hated they got rid of classic Gears controls for a more Cod-style oriented movement set, but beside that, it had great ideas such as declassified missions and the enemy dynamic respawn system. Also, it was the graphic peak of the time.
Gears of war was such a special franchise to me growing up. attempting to explain how amazing the xbox 360 and this trilogy was will never do it justice. You just had to be there.
Yes, yes they were. I replayed each of the original trilogy three times over the last four years with my girlfriend. They were just as good now as they were when I originally played them on the 360. The games were technically amazing, the visuals were incredible and it was the only real series which nailed 3rd person shooting at the time. It was soo good that Bioware just straight up copied it for Mass Effect 2 and 3. Gnasher battles online were just awesome.
I personally think that you should do retrospectives on games that aren't releasing new sequels, too. There some really cool games that need some spotlight, too. Dark cloud, the OG god of wars, the full metal alchemist games, the budokai games, tenkaichi games, etc.
Ima Gears of War vet been in love with the franchise since day one and I've gotten my friend who has never played a Gears of War game ever to play through it and we're doing it CO OP and my God. The Nostalgia I get whilst he is experiencing it for the first time, is just a weird feeling and his "grenade everything" mentality taught me something new I never even considered to do ever in Gears of War 1, during the encounter with the Beserker to toss grenades at the doors. I spent years, bloody years using the Beserker to break the doors down and my homie comes along and blows up a door with grenades accidently. I was flabbergasted and was constantly tripping over my words by that revelation almost two decades later, wish I had known that back in '06.... Would have helped a lot back then on Insane difficulty... I was ashamed of myself for not finding that out sooner LMAO!
I recently, like a week ago, came back to these games. It had been years since I played. I honestly forgot about Gears totally….but I saw the trailer, and everything came back…all the memories of horde mode with the homies, slugging through the campaigns, the first time I chainsawed a locust(dad loved that shit). Gears 1-3 are still fan-fuckin-tastic!
Gears was freaking awesome. That first game with the Xbox 360 kept me and my best friend occupied for a LONG time. We used to blaze up and beat the campaign on co-op mode over and over again.
7:00 Many games from that era get criticized for being brown and grey and looking the same but I don't think Gears deserves that criticism, the lack of colors in Gears of War perfectly fit the setting and tone of the game. I actually think modern games might have the opposite problem now, it feels like almost every game is very colorful and vibrant now and they all look the same.
You didn’t mention how resident evil 4 and killswitch were huge influences on gears of wars shooting and cover mechanics. Re4 defined the 3rd person over the shoulder mechanic that helped shape gears into a great shooter.
Gears of War is my fathers most favourite game series. He has played it in coop with my sister, my brother, me and my partner. He playes the games nearly every year again. Everytime i see content of gears of war, i think of my father. ❤
I’m still hoping that Microsoft makes an MCC-style compilation of the old Gears of War games for PC. So far I’ve only played the original (which has either an old GfWL-shackled port, or the horribly-optimized Ultimate Edition) and Gears 4 (main story was kinda cringe but that game had a stupidly-good PC port, even by today’s standards). I know I could also emulate them on Xenia, but Xenia’s still pretty early in development, plus I’m usually more motivated to play through a native port than just emulating something
Everyone owes it to themselves to play these masterpieces and experience an amazing story and gameplay! So many cool enemies, weapons, and memorable moments that defined a generation and continue to do so today!

Bro, honestly I even loved the game for its atmosphere and aesthetic. That destroyed post apocalyptic neo-European baroque architecture that has been pulverized by war. Never seen a shooter put so much attention to detail and beauty in its setting since.
I still remember playing gears of war for the first time. That was the first game from that generation that looked next gen. I thought graphics wouldn’t get any better after that lol.
Another thing that isn't mentioned nearly as often as it should, is that GoW was one of the first games to actually have great diversity of races with an absolute lack of bad stereotypes. Here in Mexico (and the rest of Latin America) it was an absolute hit from the start because we could identify with the whole cast, plus we actually got an absolutely fantastic dub, too.
Im a PC gamer, only ever play Gears 1, 4 and 5. After Xenia Manager become popular, I tried Gears 2 last night ,what an awesome Game, its set up, atmosphere, presentation, ambition and its techological push is what we mostly missing from AAA of today. Yes the texture are murky compared todays standard, yes the presentation a bit janky due to tech limitation, but I can feel what It tried to achieve and like it or not Im immersed in it.
I remember being at a GameStop demo kiosk and trying the gears of war 1 demo and thinking this is the most beautiful game I've ever seen and graphics cannot get better than this 😭
I played the first Gears of War in co op with a random guy from New Jersey (I’m from Belgium). We played for hours and finished the game together. The guy told me he had an illness and couldn’t go to school anymore. It sounded serious. Wonder how that dude’s doing..
I kinda wanted 6 to finish out the "old man Marcus" trilogy. I hope they go back to it after "Origins/Zero" E-Day. Maybe the can take everything that works about that and move forward.
So true about co-op, especially couch co-op, not being prevalent in today’s games. Got so many great memories of my brother and I playing through campaigns co-op together where now they expect each kid to have their own console and games… so sad
Love the video bro! Replaying all the Gears from my teenage years and I’m loving it! How do you hook up the Xbox to a old TV like that? It looks awesome!
Gears is one of the best series in gaming. And the Xbox360 (and PS3) generation was the best generation. I don't think any other generation has had so many games, not to mention complete series, that went on to be legendary, beloved pieces of gaming history. The 360 generation is to gaming what the 80s is to general pop culture. It's that era that will live on forever in our hearts and culture will never fully move on from because it just has that much hold on all of us.
It's sad when games become unpopular After a certain period of time but when a new game comes out they become popular again like gears of war of course
So everyone say HOD is a giant space laser!! Cool!! But one up it by realizing the locust are “bugs” (it’s kinda in their name)…so imagine the HOD is a giant magnifying glass and youre concentrating the sun and literally “zapping” ants
I'd argue that the original Max Payne (2001) and especially Max Payne 2 (2003) had very fun 3rd person gunplay already few years before Gears. The sequel still holds up surprisingly well even to this day (altho the first game is definitely up there as well, especially with it's story)!
The answer is yes. The original trilogy, had a phenomenal development team that brought full games with great campaigns, awesome multiplayer and innovative third modes (horde). In my opinion Gears 1, 2 and 3 are up there with the likes of Mass Effect and I know the game is linear shooter but it was so well written. And Gears 3 Multiplayer? OMG - fucking awesome. Judgement and the new trilogy (even though it's in progress) dont quite hit that same itch that the original did. These games each have their own issues also but overall a step back. With that said. Super excited for E-Day.
I played all the 360 games back in the day. Im currently playing 4 then 5 since I kinda of never got around to playing them when they released. Dabbling with Gears Tatics as well and it's quite good.
I think Gears could do some cool stuff if they embraced the tragic nature of the Locust to develop the faction. But they just keep resetting to "Grrr kill humans" and nothing else.
I was in my mid teens when I first played Gears of War. Those were better times for gaming, so many epic trilogies on a single console generation! Bioshock, Uncharted, Mass Effect, God of War.
The only thing I disliked about UE was it didn’t feel as creepy when you finally meet the lambent wretches. Like if you play the og gears 1, there’s way more lighting strikes, darker in more spots and just the overall lighting makes it feel to bright almost.
Halo 3 and Gears of war 2 still remain my top 2 favorite games of all time. the original gears trilogy was awesome but I can see why people have mixed feelings about 4 and 5.

Ah yes A-Train my favorite gears character! Love the way our brains work when we watch and play things with similar names.
The golden era of Xbox, When you could play Halo 3 and Gears. Great memories
Greatest multiplayer experience for me personally. So good. One of the best co op series of games to play as well. Every game was great.
the first two games were, they really are masterpieces most fun of any campaign in a video game I have ever played imo.
I play through this trilogy every summer. Gears and Mass Effect trilogy are my all time favorites
I remember being at a GameStop demo kiosk and trying the gears of war 1 demo and thinking this is the most beautiful game I've ever seen and graphics cannot get better than this 😭
never imagined halo reach score would vibe so perfectly with gears
I love the series. But GoW2 is the best one. I loved the atmosphere, set pieces, boss fights, the ending, and the multiplayer modes.
the amount of hype that filled my body seeing doms hand come down in that trailer will never be matched. Gears of War 2 is Gears of War.
I played the first Gears of War in co op with a random guy from New Jersey (I’m from Belgium). We played for hours and finished the game together. The guy told me he had an illness and couldn’t go to school anymore. It sounded serious. Wonder how that dude’s doing..
right after a new gears game was announced. Crazy timing lol
Aint no way he said A-Train multiple times and never noticed in editing
Hey Retro Rebond could you do a retrospective on Army of TWO? I don't think you have done that series but I would love it if you did
I kinda wanted 6 to finish out the "old man Marcus" trilogy. I hope they go back to it after "Origins/Zero" E-Day. Maybe the can take everything that works about that and move forward.
Honestly I can’t be the only one that had Ben carmine as my favorite character I wish he wouldn’t have died he was badass
Kids these days don’t understand how good we had it in the early 2000s ❤
i fr thank god sometimes that i could grow up with this series
They released 4 Gears games in one console generation. Now we are lucky to get one game from a series per generation.
Haha you said A-train at 21:03 instead of Cole Train
A-Train? =(
Its the COLE TRAIN BABY
We need a full hd trilogy collection...
I'm soooo happy they're doing a prequel.
I think Gears could do some cool stuff if they embraced the tragic nature of the Locust to develop the faction. But they just keep resetting to "Grrr kill humans" and nothing else.
Calling Cole A-Train is absolutely insane..
Gears of War 1 I was 24 when it came out, now I'm a middle aged man :-P
Halo 3 and Gears of war 2 still remain my top 2 favorite games of all time. the original gears trilogy was awesome but I can see why people have mixed feelings about 4 and 5.
It's crazy to think that the best-looking game was also the most innovative and best playing.
Is it that good??? IS IT ‘THAT’GOOD! FUCK YEAH it is!
Gears 2 really had my favorite story but the og trilogy is some of the best couch co-op you can get
Short answer is - YES, it is really THAT good
