Halo Infinite on Consoles: Xbox Series X/S vs Xbox One S/X - Can Xbox One Run It?

  • Every Xbox console tested with 343 Industries' long-awaited Halo sequel. Open world gameplay defines Infinite, on an engine that scales impressively to all consoles old and new. Xbox One gets the first billing in this analysis as we test original 2013 hardware - where a dynamic 1080p and 30fps cap are respectably held, if let down by uneven frame-pacing. How does Xbox One X, Series S and X augment this experience? Are frame-rates successfully locked at 60fps on more powerful consoles? And what of loading times? Tom runs through every version, every mode, to get you the answers in this breakdown.

Good stuff, the scalability of the game is definitely impressive although it is a little bit surprising to me how hard it is for the game to hold a 120fps framerate on both the Series X and PC. CPU usage doesn't seem to be that high on PC, yet from benchmarks I've seen the performance difference between a 3060ti, 3070, and 3080 is pretty small which almost implies it IS CPU bound.
Perhaps the game was just never designed with >60fps in mind, which I suppose would make sense since it started out as a Xbox One only game. Hope that in future updates the 120fps mode on Xbox Series X stabilizes more and the PC version is able to hit that framerate with relative ease as well.
I do find it a little bit baffling how a game that runs generally at 30fps 1080p on the Xbox One can't hit an average above 100fps on the lowest settings at 1080p on my PC (GTX 1080 and i7 8700k)

So I'm a little disappointed at the Series S performance. For one Microsoft marketed the series s as a 60 fps at 1440p. 4 tflops rdna2 full feature set vs 6 tflops old gcn xbox one x. But it seems the One X is still the more powerful machine in terms of resolution and holds its own in performance vs the Series S. I know that the textures are better on Series S but that resolution difference is "stagerring". You would think with all the full rdna 2 feature set that Microsoft championed plus the faster cpu and rdna2 cu's which are bigger than gcn cu's plus the higher gpu clocks that it would at the minimum equal xbox one x with better performance. There must be a cost saving bottleneck to the series s. The very low bandwidth/ ram? I have a series s and it's kind of a bummer.

I think it's the RAM amount. One X is 2GB more than Series S and that's significant for resolution. Not to mention the bandwidth of the RAM is much greater on One X. This is the reason I never let go of my One X when I got the Series S so I can play games that are CPU bottleneck on the Series S and GPU and RAM restrained games on the One X. I would like a Series X but couldn't get one so settled for Series S earlier in the year. It's fine for the most part.

This is rare example of the One X completely beating the Series S. While the Series S has similar gpu capability and far better cpu capability, this game seems to want bandwidth and framebuffer size. I guess that higher res is tough on the Series S regardless of frame rate. Curious to know what power consumption is on the different modes. 40 fps could have been a better option as well.
Overall, I do not miss my Series S compared to One X. I much prefer the more stable frame rates, faster load times, and far lower power use.

    Good job considering cross-gen compromises.
*The absolute baseline complexity/AI/physics/world simulation MUST function the same on prior generation Xbox One devices*
In other words, that baseline must adhere to the sketchy limitations of the old, fragile Jaguar CPU.
The same will be said for a big upcoming Sony first-party exclusive like Horizon Forbidden West. Looks great like Halo Infinite, but ultimately it's shackled to a baseline complexity limit that must function on the PS4/Pro.
The next Halo game and the next Horizon game after these final cross-gen installments will be set free from the constraints of the Jaguar CPU, shift to a Series and PS5 min spec, and they'll enjoy a significant increase to baseline complexity/world sim/AI.
These developers can't wait to leave those previous generation limitations behind and move up to a stronger baseline spec/SKU.

It's not an achievement that X1 looks similar and runs well when the base hardware specs you're building off of is X1. All they did was add what they could on top of the X1 base to improve the looks for XSX. Again, Sony/GG is doing the same thing for Horizon 2.
