  • Cycle World compares Harley-Davidson's 131-cubic-inch crate engine to the 114-cubic-inch engine.
To be able to ride into a Harley-Davidson dealership and ride out the same day with a 50-percent increase in horsepower is the goal with the new Screamin' Eagle 131 crate engine. Yes, if your dealer is up to it, you can turn your stock touring bike into a hot-rod bagger with a day in the shop. But there’s much more to this new engine than just increased peak torque and horsepower. How and where does that new power hit, and what about heat and fuel management? We picked up a stock Street Glide Special, rode it as-is for a couple of weeks, then swapped out the 114 engine for the 131 to find out.
The crate 131 engine is changed in many more ways from stock than just increased displacement versus the 114. The Screamin' Eagle 131 gets the typical Stage IV upgrades from H-D, plus a few bigger alterations. This includes 1mm larger intake and exhaust valves (when compared to Screamin' Eagle Milwaukee-Eight Stage IV kits), a higher lift cam with longer duration and higher lift for both intake and exhaust lobes, increased compression ratio with forged pistons, steel-sleeve cylinders, a larger 64mm throttle body with its corresponding intake manifold, and high-capacity 5.5-gram-per-second fuel injectors. So while the bump in power does come largely from the increased displacement, the wide, flat torque curve and how usable that power is comes as a result of a complete engine tune to take the greatest advantage of its extra cubic inches. This is a street-compliant engine swap, and the installed exhaust system is 49-state EPA compliant, as well.
We gave the dyno sheets to Technical Editor Kevin Cameron for his take on stock vs. hop-up tuning: "The 114 engine has been given a classic H-D ‘shed roof’ torque curve-the peak of 112 pound-feet is on the left-hand side of the page at 2,500 rpm, after which it slopes downward to 70 pound-feet at 5,500. Often what this downslope means is that the smaller-diameter intake ports needed to peak the torque down at 2,500 aren’t really enough to supply the airflow the engine would like at higher revs. English engine pioneer Harry Ricardo called this ‘wire-drawing.’
“The big engine is not only larger in displacement, but has been re-cammed to give a broad ‘haystack’ torque curve, with its peak of 120 pound-feet 1,700 revs higher, up at 4,200,” Cameron continues. “This engine has more breathing capacity at higher revs than the smaller one, a result of both larger ports and the more aggressive cam.”
And that “haystack” torque curve translates to a very wide range of readily available power, peaking at 130.67 pound-feet and putting out more than 120 pound-feet of torque from 2,800 to 5,200 revs. Horsepower production is also pleasingly linear, climbing steadily from idle until it plateaus right before redline, peaking at 121.62 hp at 5,620 rpm-a massive increase from the stock 114′s 81 hp at 4,780 rpm.
In our instrumented performance testing, the 131 ran 0-100 mph 4.4 seconds faster than the 114 at 9.35 seconds, and finished the quarter-mile more than a full second faster at 12.58 seconds.
It feels healthy on the low end, although 0-30 mph times are almost identical to the stock bike. Road Test Editor Michael Gilbert noted that his quickest times on the 114 were with traction control disabled, since he could control the lower power and torque output given available traction. To get the best times with the 131, traction control was necessary to moderate wheelspin on launch due to the remarkable increase in torque and horsepower. Also, power production is shifted toward the midrange, so, in a sense, the greatest gains make themselves felt over the 40 mph mark.
On the highway, the Street Glide runs an indicated 80 mph at just under 3,000 rpm. What this means on the 114 is that, since its torque declines from its 2,520-rpm peak, it is already on the downslope at highway speed. On the 131, torque continues to climb all the way to 4,260 rpm, resulting in much stronger top-gear roll-on performance.
“These acceleration improvements from roughly 40 to 100 mph are addicting, and enough to slide your butt back in the saddle as you tuck behind the fairing,” Gilbert says. “The 131 develops a personality here not found in the Street Glide, with an attitude of ‘I’m not going to kill you, but you better hang on tight.’ This is also reflected in the top-gear roll-on numbers.”
Gilbert is totally right: This power is addicting, and so is the sound that goes with it.

I had this same thought. There is just no value proposition with Harley. They are too damned expensive for what you get. Yes, fit and finish are very good but at some point you have to ride the thing and that is where everything falls apart. They could have been miles ahead of the game if they had just kept their water-cooled Revolution engine in play and developed it more for the touring line. Better yet, they should have brought Project Nova to reality. Just more poor decision making on Harley's part. Sad...

I love my 114. She makes well over 130 tq, and right about 120hp. If i wanted a fast bike, I would have kept my R1.
My bike is set up for my fat ass, an occasional sweet , unsuspecting young female passenger, my traveling gear, and some nice mucus, to all meet on the highway, to merge, or pass slower traffic with ease. That's what 130 tq from a low ram does for you. Yes it's cool to have a "fast Harley " what ever the heck that is, bht let's face it. 900 pounds, 120 hp is never going to be in any danger of being called fast.

Until I got on my dads equally built 110 and it blew me away so much. Maybe 20-30hp and ftlb difference. But talk about usable torque. It's all in that 2-4000rpm range. Nice 131, imagine it will be their next base big twin in a few years. Wish HD would also focus on “the simple things” like fixing the damn pop out ignition switch problem on my 2018 Road Glide Special (when I traded in my 2008 Road Glide), instead of having my dealership tell me when I discovered the issue for myself the first time after taking delivery “Well most customers just decide not to use the column lock to avoid the problem.” Other surprise was how easy the ignition key rusts. The dealership washed the bike and placed the key in one of the dash stow boxes which had retained water from the wash, it rusted badly in a few short hours. I never remember any of these issues on my previous bikes (going back to the early 90’s) the simple things worked and lasted as designed. They also had to replace a defective voltage regulator a week after I took receipt of the new bike. Corporate HD has really lost its way, far too focused on selling big ticket add-ons to their customers vice ensuring their stock bikes are bullet proof when manufactured.

All this Harley hate! First... I've owned a lot of different bikes from Harleys to hyper nakeds. I love ANYTHING on two wheels with an engine. Even scooters lol. What keeps me coming back to Harleys is the fit and finish, the aftermarket, and the dealer network (try finding a Ducati dealer nearby when you need one on a Sunday afternoon in some random place on a road trip). People love comparing them to Ducatis, BMW GS, R1s, etc... But that's like comparing a Chevelle to a Porsche or a built Jeep. VERY different vehicles but both very cool. I like my Harley because it's comfortable, has that no downshifting required kinda torque, and I can pick from 1000 different seats and 1000 different windshields to get EXACTLY what I want. I wave at anyone on two wheels every chance I get... Even guys on scooters. If you want to tuck and go fast, drag knees, and wail around at 12k RPM, Harleys are not the bike for you... But that doesn't mean it's not the right bike for someone else. Some of us appreciate ALL bikes. It's a better way of life to just enjoy all of them for what they are! Harley haters are no better than the Harley guys that hate sport bikes... Same gang mentality, just a different color.

3:57 Others have pointed out that there's something off with the numbers: For the 131 it takes 9.35 secs to get to 100mph. THEN according to the 1/4 mile info it takes another 3.23 secs to get to 106.72mph. Either the 1/4 mile time of the 131 should be quicker or the trap speed higher. IF the performance numbers are correct then the 131 is seriously running out of steam (with 121 hp shouldn't be), has an electronically or gearing limited top speed, or the rider forgot to shift another gear higher. As I understand it, You have to start with the base of a 114 to get the 131 because the flywheels are different (according to one video I watched). A 107 can be built out to a 128. But there are 114 mods with a cam, tuning and exhaust that match the 131 stock numbers. I saw a guy on you tube install an s&s 124 kit on his softail m8 wit numbers in the 140s for tq and hp. He said his new gas mileage was about 26 miles per gallon-no thank you.

As mentioned many times below, be happy to ride what you ride. I had a yamaha fz6 before my harley and i enjoyed it. But i love my 2018 harley softail deluxe too. These days comfort, durability and versatility are the priorities, not so much speed. I can load it with bags and a windshield for a long trip or i can strip it down and cruise. What I like most about a harley is that it is a platform that I can modify as my needs and interests change. Upfront costs are a b!+@#, no lie there. it’s made of steel, built like a tank, and will be around for as long as i am. Now if somebody wants to give me a good deal on a 2021 ducatti xdiavel then I’d be happy to expand my moto-portfolio!

Nick Sokolis, then buy a car. Going way back to the early Harleys, the Ford Model T was cheaper than the motorcycles of the day. If there weren't a market for this, they wouldn't do it. This 131 is not for me. But enough people want it. I have a stock 114 RGS. No exhaust, or any other engine mods. My wife and I travel to the Smokey Mountains, two up quite often. At 65 plus mph on the highway, I can quickly pass cars and trucks without downshifting. Couldn't do that with my Twincam. I have had every overhead valve engine that Harley has made. (Except a Knucklehead. I'll never be able to afford one or the parts to build one.) These new 107's and 114's have plenty of power stock, for touring. For racing, well that's a different story.

And I'm willing to bet that you weren't around then. I could be wrong, but I think it's a pretty good guess. Yes I am an H-D fan. But I appreciate other bikes as well. Just like I prefer trucks over cars. I also have a preference in brand when it comes to trucks as well. (because of experience) And overall, nobody cares what someone else rides or drives.
